1 MSANews Volume 13, No. 1 May 2009 Straight from the President Greetings Shooters! Well, Spring is finally here and I hope you have been able to get out there on the fields and shoot some targets. Anyone who knows me, knows that I am pro-michigan Skeet. I believe in shooting the majority of my targets in our state. This helps to keep our sport alive and our clubs paying their bills. I hope that you are able to shoot as many events this year as possible, here in Michigan, and I hope to see you at some of them. Note that on the schedule are some 50 bird/4 event shoots that only require one day participation. Give some of these a try if the economy has tightened your pocketbook, as it has done mine. The MSA Board of Directors met in April. At that meeting, we decided that we need to cut some costs from our budget and one of those items is our newsletter. It cost us over $5,000 last year to produce the three issues. Beginning in January, 2010, we will no longer print our newsletter but will place it on our website. You will need to provide us with your address and you will receive notification that the newsletter is ready. Then you can go to the George Gilliam website and read the newsletter or print off a copy of it (if you prefer paper). For those of our members that do not have an address ask a friend to print you a copy when they are on the website. The website also contains numerous amounts of What s Inside? Information you should know page 3 Genesee Sportsman s Club: Springtime Open page 5 All State Team page 10 Lou Raden Memorial High Target Award page SHOOT SCHEDULE pages information about our organization (see page 4). Sometime this year please mail your address to Trish Bruck at miskeet@comcast.net with the subject line emsa news. The Board works hard to keep within a budget and still have funds to put on a great State Shoot and pay our bills. We are open to hearing from any of our registered shooters if they have ideas or suggestions for making our organization even better. Feel free to call me at any time, as well as any of the board members, if you have questions. Please make sure you read the Information you may want to know page to keep up on the latest news. 2 May 2009 MSANews Information You May Want To Know!! 3 PLEASE NOTE THE RECENT CHANGES LISTED BELOW: 1) The MSA Board approved a reduction in the minimum target requirements, to align with the revised NSSA standards that make you eligible for the All State Teams and NSSA Teams for 2008/9. These may change in the future back to the original amounts, but until further notice the amounts required are: 12Gauge, 1,000 targets; 20 Gauge, 28 Gauge and.410 are 800 targets; Doubles, 500. PLEASE NOTE: WHEN FILING YOUR SHOOT REPORTS, PLEASE REMEMBER TO FILL OUT FIRST 100 S REPORT FOR THE NSSA AND KATHY WARNER (MSA). OTHERWISE OUR SHOOTERS DO NOT GET LISTED IN THE NA- TIONAL PUBLICATION. ALSO, PLEASE SEND FIRST 100 S NAMES, DATE AND EVENT TO JANE CARPENTER TO ASSURE THE SHOOTER GETS A MSA CERTIFICATE. 2) The MSA Board approved an additional explanation to the requirements to make a State Team for the years going forward. The new addition reads: Additional requirement for all teams: If only the minimum number of required targets is shot, then all but 200 targets in each gauge/event must be regular targets (i.e., not targets only ). For each 50 or 100 targets above the required regular targets, targets only are allowed. However, no targets only shot after the Michigan State Skeet Championships will be used for determining an individual s eligibility unless they are needed to make the minimum target requirements. The next annual Referee Clinic, Shoot Scheduling and Board meeting will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at Saginaw Gun Club at 10:00 a.m. The Referee Clinic will be first, followed by the Shoot Scheduling and the Board meeting. 4 May 2009 MSANews 5 Genesee Sportsman s Club Springtime Open On March 15, 2008, Genesee Sportsman s Club hosted a very different skeet shoot. Four guns and 50 targets for the days total of 200 targets. This is a new type of shoot that seems to be working for those shooters who cannot be at a two-day shoot. A HOA and shoot-off takes place at the end of the day and the shooter doesn t need to return on Sunday if he/she is unable to be there. This also keeps the time on the field to a minimum in the cold weather. Fifteen (15) hearty souls came out to for this early March shoot and George Gilliam ordered wonderful weather for the occasion. It was in the high 50 s, sunny and an occasional slight breeze (the best ever weather for this March shoot). 12 Gauge Event Champ George Gilliam, Jr. AA1 A1 A2 B1 B2 B3 C1 C2 C3 E1 E2 E3 Brent Edwards Daniel Adam Denny Tanis Gene Swanson Bill Higley Jeff Rimer Robert Edwards John Klida Robert Refice Michael Bregand Richard Rine Folke Boman 20 Gauge Event Champ George Gilliam, Jr. AA1 AA2 A1 A2 A3 B1 B2 B3 C1 D1 D2 28 Gauge Denny Tanis Brent Edwards Daniel Adam Bill Higley Robert Refice Jeff Rimer Robert Edwards John Massman Michael Bregand Richard Rine Folke Boman Event Champ Brent Edwards AA1 AA2 A1 A2 B1 C1 D1 Denny Tanis George Gilliam, Jr. Jeff Rimer Bill Higley Daniel Adam Jeffrey Rimer Richard Rine George Gilliam takes 12, 20, 410 and HOA. 7 8 MSANews May Class All American Teams Congratulations to our 11 Winners in Michigan!!! Class All-American Teams replaces the Class All Zone Teams Teams beginning with the shooting year Selection is based on the shooter s beginning regular HOA classification (AAA-E). Classification for new shooters will be based on the first five events of the current year. Targets must be shot at registered shoots or in registered leagues to count for this recognition. Points are the same regardless of the number of competitors in a shoot eliminating geographical differences awarded at registered shoots. They are: 100 points Class 1st in a 100 target event; 75 points Class 2nd in a 100 target event; and 50 points for Class 3rd in a 100 target event. Points will go up and down proportionately based on targets shot. For example a 50 target event would provide 50 points for class first; 37 points for Class 2nd; and 25 points for Class 3rd. Event champion, runner-up and third will get 100 points in their class. To be considered, a shooter had to shoot NSSA minimums of 800; 800; 800; 800; and 300 doubles. Shooters can track their standings throughout the year on the NSSA website. All shooters in AAA-E are eligible if they are classified in the 4 guns and have shot the Class All- American minimum targets including the 300 doubles targets. If you are selected to an Open All-American Team you are not eligible for consideration. Selection for an All-American Concurrent Team is not a factor. Open All-Americans will be selected first then Class All-Americans to insure there is no duplication. League class place will count and be included at the end of the year. Monthly targets will not be considered. No additional administrative burdens as the computer automatically assigns points based on reported class places. No need to travel away from local area. Shoot at your surrounding clubs and have an equal chance for consideration. Watch your points accumulate at mynssa.com. The following teams will be selected in Classes AAA-E for a total of 245 shooters each year. First and Second Teams (10 shooters per team) will receive patch, pin and certificate. Honorable Mention Team (15 shooter) will received pin and certificate. As you can see below thirteen (13) of our Michigan Shooters have been selected. They are listed below with their points. Congratulations to our great Michigan shooters! AAA Class Team Al Magyar, Second Team - 3,975 George Gilliam, Second Team 3,762 Brent Edwards, Honorable Mention 3,725 AA Class Team Dave Schultz, Second Team 3,737 Tom Pavlack, Second Team 3,737 B Class Team Terry Eicholtz, First Team 5,424 Rich Curlett, Second Team 3,925 Tom Keiper, Second Team 3,710 Norm Rushing, Second Team 3,375 Frank Pantalena, Honorable Mention 2,875 D Class Team Jeffrey Rimer, Second Team 2,600 Richard Rine, Honorable Mention -2,287 Sharon Day, Honorable Mention 2,100

8 May 2009 MSANews 9 Michigan Skeet Association State Teams Selection to all teams is based upon high average; All-State Team and Concurrent selection is based upon 4-gun HOA average. For each 50 or 100 targets above the required regular targets, targets only are allowed. However, no targets only shot after the Michigan State Skeet Championships will be used for determining an individual s eligibility unless they are needed to make the minimum target requirements.

9 10 Michigan s Ten Best! All State Team After a very successful new format, starting in 1997, that calls for no individual to appear on more than one team, the Michigan Board of Directors voted on continuation of this system to elect Michigan Teams. The 10 All-Staters will be on that team only. Then in order, according to gun averages, the five highest shooters in each of the four gauges and doubles, followed by the Concurrent H.O.A. winners. To qualify for the All-State Team, members had to shoot the National Standards of 1, gauge, and 1,000 each of 20, 28,.410 and 500 doubles. They will be listed on the plaque in our Hall of Fame at the Detroit Gun Club, will receive belt buckles and certificates and will receive the right to wear our *Josten made All-State ring. The team in order of averages is listed below: (Please note: Due to the economy the standards were reduced both Nationally and in Michigan until further notice. 12 Gauge: 1,000; 20, 28 &.410: 800; and Doubles: 500).
