1 MSANews Volume 17, No. 1 January 2013 Straight from the President Fellow Shooters! First, I want to congratulate Scott, Debbie, Kathy, Rick and everyone else who helped do the great job they did at the State Championships in August. Also, I would like to thank the Michigan Skeet Association for inducting me into the Hall of Fame. It is a great honor and one that I will always appreciate. Many of you know that I have told the MSA Board of Directors, that due to health reasons, I would not be able to continue as your President or a member of the Board beyond this term. Back in the spring I was receiving treatments for my liver and they are working. I also have a problem with my heart and it is, at least, not getting any worse. I have been proud to serve as your President and on the MSA Board the last few years, and as my health allows, I plan to continue to shoot registered targets with many of you in the future. At the MSA Board meeting in November, Dave Schiebel was elected as your new President. I know that Dave will do a wonderful job for all of you. Brent Edwards was also elected as Vice- George Gilliam, Jr. Dave Schiebel What s Inside? President. Other newly elected members of the Board are: Jane Carpenter, Loraine Malloy, Trish Magyar, Bob O Brien and Rick Trawinski. With these leaders, and your entire Board of Directors, I know the MSA will remain one of the best Associations in this country. Thanks again for your support. 5 January 2013 MSANews 5 NEW NATIONAL RULING ON ALL-AMERICAN AND CONCURRENT TEAMS Provided by Brent Edwards NATIONAL ALL AMERICAN TEAM TARGET REQUIREMENTS FOR 2013 Please note a revision by the NSSA this year. To make a NATIONAL All-American Open or Concurrent team, there are NO MINIMUM target requirements. This is based purely on the Krieghoff All American Points race, found on the NSSA website. To be eligible for the Jay Schatz High Average Leader Awards, the National minimums of gauge targets, gauge targets, gauge targets, targets and 500 Doubles targets are still in effect. These averages are also posted on the NSSA website. MICHIGAN ALL-STATE, ALL-GAUGE, and CONCURRENT TARGET REQUIREMENTS FOR 2013 The MSA Board approved a reduction in the minimum target requirements to make an All-State and All- Gauge team. The new minimums are 800 targets in the 12 gauge, 800 targets in the 20 gauge, 800 targets in the 28 gauge, 800 targets in the 410 bore and 500 targets in Doubles. The MSA Board also changed the requirements to make a concurrent team. These changes begin November 1, These changes DO NOT affect the 2012 shooting year that ended October 31. The MSA may change these target requirements in the future.

6 6 MSANews January rd ANNUAL PAT HAYWOOD OPEN by Greg Mahalak The 23 rd Annual Pat Haywood Open was hosted by Wayne County Sportsman s Club the week end of June 1st, 2nd and 3rd, This shoot is held in memory of Pat Haywood, who was the second person in Skeet history to shoot a 400 x 400. Pat accomplished this on May 17 th and 18 th, 1969, at the Thunderbird Gun Club in Belleville, Michigan. Twenty-seven shooters braved the high winds all weekend to come out and have a great time, great food and help while handling my first registered shoot. Loraine is handing over the reins of holding the registered shoots for Wayne County to me. Little did I know how little I knew about this, although I learned a lot in a short time. Loraine helped me the entire way with Rick Trawinski and Bruce Christian confirming my thoughts on how hard it is to try to shoot and hold the shoot. The words of encouragement from everyone here helped me get through this. Thanks to Dave Pratt, Ted Maynard, Dominic Torres, Keith Toro and Pat Howe who handled everything outside. It s wonderful to be able to comment that we are seeing new, young shooters at many of the skeet events this year outside of the SCTP Program. It s great to know that a new generation of shooters are learning to enjoy the shooting sports. It will be better for the Fall Open. Bruce Christian takes HOA. The weekend began with a windy Doubles Event on Friday, sponsored this year by the Members of WCSC. No shoot offs were required to settle the winners in this event. Robert O Brien was Event Champion with a 95; and Bruce Christian finished as Event Runner-up with a very nice 94. Class winners were as follows: A1, Pat Wusthoff; B1, Dave Pratt; C1, Keith Toro. The first event of the day on Saturday was 12 Gauge. It was sponsored by EJ Kaneris Inc., one of our returning sponsors. Bruce Christian and Rick Trawinski went to the shoot off field for event champ and event runner-up with Bruce claiming the event champ and Rick the event runnerup. Class winners were, AA- Robert O Brien, A- Robert Petro, B-Jim Sykes, C-Jerry Barefoot, D- Tony Rohde and E- Diane Mason. The second gun on Saturday was the 20 gauge event, sponsored by the Farrow Group, another returning sponsor from last year. Bruce Christian was the Event Champion with Pat Wusthoff taking runner-up honors. Class winners were as follows: AA Gordon Novak, A Dave Pratt, B Hunter Staples, C- Keith Toro, D Tony Rohde. The 20 Gauge Event concluded our registered skeet program for the day, but was far from the last thing on the shooting agenda. Next up was the B-C-D- E Shoot off which was sponsored by Great Lakes Sporting Arms. We would like to thank Kurt Grates for sponsoring this event again this year. The format is doubles from and the participants are handicapped by the gauges they must shoot in the shoot off. This is always a fun event, and for some of the shooters their first chance to participate in a shoot off. Fifteen shooters reported to the field with Hunter Staples coming out on top and he was awarded a Great Lakes Sporting Arms Soft Sided Four Gauge Gun Case. Jerry Barefoot finished second and was awarded a Great Lakes Sporting Arms Shell Pouch. Great shooting everyone! Many of our shooters, put the Continued on page 7

7 January 2013 MSANews 7 23 rd ANNUAL PAT HAYWOOD OPEN Continued from page 6 guns in the cases at this point, and moved on to our cook your own steak dinner. Our meat supplier, JNS Meats continued its support of our shoot through the added money program. The last shooting event of the day, on Saturday, is the 60 Second Flush Event sponsored again this year by CA Sykes Tax Service. Many thanks to Cathy, this is her fourth year sponsoring this event. The team of Bruce Christian and Jeffery Rimer took top honors at this event. This is an amazingly fun shoot with birds coming from 3 different areas and everyone always has a great time at it. Sunday started with the 28 Gauge Event. Our 28 Gauge event sponsor was Mike Farrow, President of the Farrow Group, all of the members of WCSC would like to thank Mike for his generous support of our skeet program. We also appreciate the fact that he stepped up to sponsor two events at this year s shoot. At the end of the 28 event, three shooters with 97 s were called to the shoot off field. Pat Wusthoff, Robert O Brien and Dave Pratt with Pat taking event champ and Dave the runner-up slot. The class winners were, AA Robert O Brien, A Greg Mahalak, B Mike McDade, C Hunter Staples, D Sharon Barefoot who also took Lady Champion. The 410 Event was sponsored by another returning sponsor; A-1 Auto Salvage and Scrap. We really appreciate their continued support of our skeet program. Two shooters went to the shootoff field to settle this event. Pat Wusthoff and Bret Staples, with Bret coming up as event champ and Pat the runner-up. Class winners were as follows: AA Bruce Christian, A- Dave Pratt, B - Rick Trawinski, C Kurt Miller; and D - Keith Toro. Kudos to Sharon Barefoot for taking the Lady Champion. Pat and Judy Wusthoff s company, Restoration & Reclamation Services, was our HOA Event Sponsor again this year. Bruce Christian repeated as HOA Champion this year with a score of 380. We appreciate Bruce traveling from Indiana to shoot with us each year. HOA runnerup went to Pat Wusthoff. Class winners were as follows: AA Robert O Brien, A Dave Pratt, B Bret Staples, C Hunter Staples, E Sharon Barefoot. The Champ of Champs event was won by Mike McDade with a great 97 far outpacing everyone else with the event runner-up being Gordon Novak. The last event of the weekend was the Briley HOA Handicap Event. All of the HOA shooters were eligible for this event, which was handicapped by the shooters HOA Class. AA shooters shot 410 with no targets; A shooters shot 410 with one target; B shooters shot 28 ga with 2 targets; C shooters shot 20 ga with 3 targets and D shooters shot 12 ga with 4 targets. Fifteen shooters lined up for the shoot off and I think that even the first shooters out had a great time. Hunter Staples finished a very nice shoot, by capturing the Briley HOA Handicap Championship, and Bruce Christian finishing as event runner-up. Both shooters were awarded Briley Gift Certificates. We would like to thank our event sponsors, and our advertising sponsors as well. Please support these area businesses if you get the chance. We would also like to thank Sean Marshall for his help with the program book. Lastly, the skeet committee at WCSC would like to thank all the shooters who participated in this year s shoot. We hope that you can join us for one or more of our Steak Roast/Mini Shoots or our Fall Open in September. Please plan on attending our 24th Annual Pat Haywood Open, it could be the year that a shooter wins our $4, X 4 jack pot, and that shooter could be you! I would like to add that even though we all shot in tough windy conditions, it was a great time because of the camaraderie and friendship we all hold with each other, Till then, remember to always shoot 2 at low 8!

8 8 MSANews January CLARK BROWN OPEN by Rick Trawinski The Clark Brown open began on Friday, April 27th with the doubles event. The doubles was split into two flights, one Friday evening and one Saturday morning. The weather was near perfect on Friday, and a good percentage of shooters got their targets in, being that the Saturday forecast was not ideal. Gordon Novak, who seems to love shooting at DSC was EV CH with a fine 97. Runner-up was Rich The Legend with 95 and Ross Szarenski with 93 was 3rd. Class winners were: A-1 Pat Wusthoff, B-1 Steve Nelson, C-1 Gerald Novak and D-1 Dale Furst. As predicted, the weather for Saturday was all doom and gloom, our courageous group took to the field in the 12 gauge event. The temperatures were chilly but the rain held off and the scores heated up. After all the shots were fired and the scores added up Ross Szarenski was EV CH with a perfect score. Jeffery Rimer was RU with 99 and Gordon Novak was 3rd. Class winners were AA: Pat Wusthoff A: Rich Curlett B: Jeff Rimer C: Paul Stafford Jr. D: Mike Delgado and Robert Baldwin taking E-1. The classes went to: A- Pete Pantalena, B- John Hinternish, C- Judy Wusthoff (who took husband and wife bragging rights for this gun) and D- Paul Stafford III. DSC then hosted its inaugural Saturday Steak Fry. Everyone seemed to be happy and well fed and after a couple adult beverages it was time to call it a night. Sunday morning came around and the fowl weather was nowhere to be found. 37 shooters took to the field on Sunday for the 20 gauge event and the scores showed some good conditions. Event Champ with a perfect 100, went to Gordon Novak (no more lessons from LP for you), while Greg Mahalak was RU with 99. A cavalry charge of 98 s took to the field for EV 3rd with Hunter Staples (who broke his first 50 straight) taking the honors. Class winners were A- Pete Pantalena, B- Rick Trawinski, C- Mike Delgado and D- Aaron Walton. With the weather remaining fantastic out came the 410. Boy just saying it scares the bejeebers out of you, doesn t it? After all was said and done Pete Pantalena was EV CH with Gordon Novak and Rich Curlett shooting off 95 s for RU and 3rd respectively. The class champs were, A- Jim Nierzwick, B- Bret Staples, C- Bill Saylor and D- Hunter Staples. Now tallying HOA. Classes were A - Jeffrey Rimer, B - Rick Trawinski, C - Mike Delgado and D - Judy Wusthoff. Finally the last thing that had to be determined was the winner of the Cowboy way L.L.C. Watch Shoot. This is a handicapped event over all 5 events. The winner of the watch was Gordon Novak, Runner-up was Rick Trawinski and third was Rich Curlett. We want to take time to thank all our volunteers led by Frank Pantalena, who without their assistance we couldn t make our shoots better each year. We look forward to seeing everyone for the Ted Hanaford / Great Lakes Open in August. Until then may your head stay down, swing through the target and blast those little orange devils.

9 January 2013 MSANews 9 Gordon Novak Wins Joe Gun 500 by Terry R. Walsh Bay County Conservation and Gun Club hosted the second annual Joe Gun 500 with $2,000 in extra money the weekend of April 22. James Nierzwick was second and Terry Walsh third. Doubles were shot under ideal conditions Friday night, and Kelly Vilet won the championship outright. Nice job Gordon! Douglas Haines (AA1), James Nierzwick (A1), Murray Hollingstead (C1), and Garrett Curlett were class winners. Gordon Novak definitely liked the championship podium, as his strong 99 topped the 28-gauge event. James Nierzwick (A1), Terry Walsh (B1), Dale Furst (C1), and Garrett Curlett (D1), were the class winners. Gordon Novak takes HOA. Terry Walsh (A1), Len Smith (B1), Dale Furst (C1), Jerry Brandon (D1), and Jerry Ferrell (E1) rounded out the class winners. Only six shooters entered the Champ of Champs event. Gordon Novak walked away with the championship. What a fabulous weekend of shooting for that young man. A special thanks is extended to all our sponsors, especially major contributor Joe Gun Sporting Goods in Stanford, and to the hard working members of the Bay County Conservation and Gun Club. They really rolled out the red carpet for this one. The food alone is worth attending this shoot, several competitors said. Shooters also enjoyed the extra shotgun games held Saturday night, which lasted right up to nightfall.

14 14 MSANews January MICHIGAN SCHOLASTIC CLAY TARGET PROGRAM 2012 MI SCTP State Shoot Participants Submitted by Loraine Malloy The 2012 Michigan SCTP Program has concluded another successful season. We continue to see an increase in participation of younger shooters. We can therefore look forward to the continued success of the program as these athletes move from Rookie to Intermediate to Senior High Participants. The National Program continues to evolve as well. The 2012 season saw new leadership at the highest levels of the organization. Louise Terry, former President of the NSSA, is now the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The organization also has a new Treasurer, Denis Karnosky, and a new Executive Director, Don Hathaway. Don is from Toledo, Ohio; if you have shot at Toledo Trap and Skeet you might have met him there. Don was also on the grounds at Detroit Gun at the Motor State. We are excited by these additions to the National Staff and believe that they will bring added stability and continued improvements to the program. We would like to thank Western Wayne County Conservation Association for again allowing us to use of their Clubhouse for the February Coaches Meeting that started off our Michigan SCTP season. This meeting gives us a chance to meet the new coaches, and renew our friendships with the returning ones. It also gives us a chance to discuss rule changes and share coaching tips and practices. The National SCTP program had a lot of new sponsorship opportunities that were discussed at this meeting. We also distributed schedules for all of the 2012 Fun Shoots, and State Shoot for all of the disciplines involved in the Program. We threw three fun shoots again this year and would like to thank the Centerline Gun Club of Calhoun County, Genesee Sportsmen s Club and Detroit Sportsmen s Congress for hosting these shoots. The growing size of the program makes it necessary for these clubs to close their fields to their membership to allow us to have the facilities necessary to run our shoots. We thank these Clubs for their commitment to youth shooting, and for assembling the manpower necessary to host these events. The purpose of these fun shoots is to introduce the young shooters to each other, and to provide them with the experience of shooting in a competitive format. The coaches work with the shooters during these fun shoots to further instill gun safety and shooting fundamentals, as well as methods to keep the teams focused and moving. The program is a team focused program. Teams are comprised of 3 Continued on page 15

A group can be a gun club, school district, 4-H group, boy scout or girl scout troop; or any other group that supports a youth program. This format has allowed us to squad two teams together to shoot on the same field, thus allowing the shooters to meet each other and form lasting friendships. As was the case in 2011, our State Shoot was held at two venues this year. Our Rookie and Intermediate Divisions shot at Island Lakes Shooting Center. These two divisions are the younger shooters in the program. The Rookie Division is shooters up to and including the Fifth Grade. The Intermediate Division is made up of shooters in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. In total, 78 young shooters shot in the event hosted by Island Lakes Shooting Center. We want to thank Pat Lieske and the members at Island Lakes for their support of our program. The senior division, which is shooters in ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades shot at Detroit Gun Club. There were 97 shooters who competed in this division this year. We would like to thank Scott Benhke and his staff, as well as all of the members at Intermediate Advanced Team Winners: First Place - North Macomb Eagles Second Place - Genesee Sportsman s Club Third Place - Western Wayne County Conservation Association Varsity Team Winners: First Place - Kent County Conservation League Second Place - Grand Blanc Schools Shooting Team Third Place - Flat River Conservation Club Continued on page 16

16 16 MSANews January MICHIGAN SCHOLASTIC CLAY TARGET PROGRAM Continued from page 15 Detroit Gun Club for their support of the MI SCTP Program. At the conclusion of shooting all of the participants gathered at Detroit Gun Club for the Awards Ceremony. As in the past medals were supplied by the SSSF for the top three teams in each division. The Michigan SCTP Program awarded Savings Bonds to the top three teams. Team awards were also given to the top three finishing High School Teams in the Senior Division. It is very exciting that this program is being accepted in our High Schools. In some districts our shooters can earn varsity letters in shooting, while in other districts our program is recognized as a club sport. We hope to see our program continue to grow within the school districts in our State. We also recognize the Individual Overall High Gun with an SCTP High Overall Belt Buckle. This year we added awards for the high individual in each of the five divisions. These shooters received Lonesome Charlie Leather Shell Pouches embossed with the outline of the State of Michigan, the year, and the SCTP division won. These pouches were very well received, and I have seen them at several registered shoots, since they were awarded. Based upon the results of a shoot off, Nicholas Ostrander was awarded the 2012 Michigan State Shoot Individual Skeet High Gun SCTP Belt Buckle. Hunter Derenski received the Lonesome Charlie Shell Pouch for High Varsity Shooter. Through the generosity of three SCTP Sponsor s we had three shotguns that were awarded to three lucky participants at the conclusion of the days events. 22 22 MSANews January 2013 Howie Bailey Wins Budweiser 500 by Terry R. Walsh The Bay County Conservation and Gun Club (BCCGC) hosted the annual Budweiser 500 the weekend of June The weather gods, as if apologizing for last year s three days of steady rain and winds, served up three ideal days of skeet weather. And the shooters took full advantage of it. Doubles were shot Friday afternoon, and Howie Bailey claimed the championship with a 98. Don Nelson (A1), Bill Saylor (B1), Stan Gorgacz (C1) and Gary Schultheis (D1) were class winners. John Gilliam, Jr. won the Junior championship and Jessica Taylor the Lady championship. Andrea Schymanski s kitchen staff provided the rest of the fixings: boiled red skin potatoes, corn-on-the-cob, fresh fruit and salads. Bob O Brien (AA1), Roger Day (A1), Terry Walsh (B1), Jerry Walkowiak (C1), and Sharon Day (D1) were class winners. Garrett Curlett maintained his hold on the Junior championship, and Christina Baning was the Lady champion. Right on cue, the winds picked up for the Sunday afternoon 410 event. Hardly a breeze all weekend, and suddenly 18 mph winds had the birds flying all over the place unbelievable! Five 94 s entered the evening shoot-off, and Ross Szarenski quickly claimed the championship. Howie Bailey (AA1), Kelly Vliet (A1), Richard Trawinski (B1), Jerry Barefoot (C1), and Murray Hollingshead (D1) were the class winners. 24 24 Poco Loco FT. WAYNE, IN St. Joe Valley Conservation Club was, once again, a popular place to be The 3 rd annual Poco Loco was held June 23 rd and 24 th to near capacity, even with adding squads to accommodate another 20 shooters. The Poco Loco is unique in a variety of ways First, entries are capped at 80 shooters, even though more fields and flights could be added, but the sponsors wanted to make the Poco a unique experience. Second, we shoot 4, 100 target.410 events (hence the name, which loosely translates to little crazy ). Third, every shooter received Poco Loco hats, towels and T-shirts specially embroidered with Juan, our logo. And, last and most definitely not least, all shooting is stopped for a mid-day siesta; well, actually, for a fully catered lunch, leaving a lot of the shooters ready for a nap afterwards! In addition to the catered lunches both days, there is also a lavish dinner; local restaurateur Jim Casaburo, owner of Casa Grille and Casa Italiano Ristoranti, prepares and serves the lunches and dinners, and Dutch Heritage, an Amish bakery, provides all of the freshbaked desserts five different pies, brownies and a variety of cookies YUM! NO ONE leaves hungry! In addition to the regular shooting events, there is also a special event, The Biggest Los- MSANews January 2013 er, on Saturday after the shootoffs sponsored by Tom Pavlack. The two individuals in each class with the lowest score based on the first two events are provided the opportunity to compete for special prizes (and ca$h). Of course, in order to make it fair, the shooters are handicapped, but they all shoot the.410! There is a lot of audience participation (read to mean heckling ) and it seems that the AAA and AA shooters get the brunt of it. When all was said and done, C Class shooter Kent Pruitt was the Champion, with Tom Spencer (D Class) Runner-up and Tom Selley (AA), 3rd. The prizes were handcrafted by Tom Pavlack, and have become the envy of all. But enough of the ancillary events This year s shoot will be especially memorable, due in large part to the phenomenal shooting performance by Paul Giambrone who missed only ONE target the entire weekend, and that was in a shoot-off he broke both 100s in the 200 target 28 Gauge shoot on Friday, winning both shoot-offs for Champion; and followed up with FOUR, yes FOUR, perfect scores in the weekend s.410 competition! But Continued on page 25

25 January 2013 MSANews 25 Poco Loco Continued from page 24 he was not alone in the perfect scores category there were two 100s in three of the events and FIVE in the other WOW!! The weather did cooperate though it was breezy at times, at least there were no thunderstorms or howling winds. In Saturday s events, Giambrone bested Becky McCumber, with Mark Molenaar taking 3rd in a shoot-off of four 99s. Class honors went to Brent Edwards (AAA), Bruce Poyer (AA), Gordon Novak (A), Bill Higley (B), Greg Pike (C) and Tom Spencer. Event 2, once again, saw Giambrone Champion over Alex Hopkins. Again, four 99s shoot-off for 3rd with Amayesn Wayne Mayes claiming that honor. Class winners were Dave Starrett (AAA), Fred Tschantz (AA), Debbi Perry (A), Higley (B), Pike (C) and Spencer (D). Sunday was a little warmer and slightly breezier in the afternoon than Saturday, but that didn t deter five shooters from posting perfect scores in the morning Giambrone had to settle for 3rd, leaving McCumber and veteran Starrett (I m talking about experience, Dave, not age yet!) to duel it out for top honors, with McCumber the victor. W.C. Parks (AAA) and Bruce Poyer (AA) were at the top of their classes with their perfect scores. Other class winners were Vic Voltz (A), Tom Considine (B), Jenny Notstad (C) and Spencer (D). The final event saw two perfect scores Giambrone and squadmate Brent Edwards. Giambrone walked away the Champion, with Edwards Runner-up and McCumber winning her shoot-off of 99s to take 3rd. W.C. Parks (AAA), Dave Scott (AA), Trish Magyar (A), John McGinnis (B), Kent Pruitt (C) and Spencer (D) were at the top of their respective class. In the High Over All race, obviously with his 4X4 with the.410, Giambrone was Champion. McCumber, though, was hot on his heels with a solid 397, followed by Edwards with 395 some pretty good scores under normal circumstances, let alone with the.410!! Class winners were Mayes (AAA), Poyer (AA), Voltz (A), Considine (B), Pike (C) and Spencer (D). Of course, the shoot, with all of its goodies and HUGE cash payouts would not be possible without the sponsorship of the three Juans John Haugh, John Ramagli and John Waters especially John Haugh. The referees were the best of the best and, they too, got into the spirit of the theme donning sombreros and other south of the border attire. The members and volunteers from St. Joe Valley Conservation Club also deserve a most hearty Thank You for all of their tireless efforts. If you have never been to a shoot at St. Joe s, you are missing out it is a top-notch facility, and the hospitality of the members is unmatched. I encourage you to make plans now to attend one of their shoots next year perhaps, if you are feeling a little crazy, the Poco Loco might find it s way onto your shoot calendar!

Thank you also to John Our 410 Champs take a Spin! Waters for sponsoring the Motor State Madness. Scott Behnke and his Assistant Managers, Danny and Jake, did a fantastic job of throwing great targets; the backloaders were stealth-like keeping the machines full and pads swept; and the crew of outstanding referees gave the shooters the targets when they called for them. Chef Lori, her kitchen staff and waitresses, made sure that no one went hungry (or thirsty!); and the shoot staff of Ann and Debbie, greeted the shooters with cheery smiles, and made sure the scores were promptly posted and the shoot-off sheets ready to go after the last shot was fired. We like to boast that we have Too Much Fun as if such a thing were possible! But anyone who has ever attended the Motor State Open will tell you we do have fun. The car show, which continues to be a huge hit, is just one example, and had nothing to do with shooting. The Motor State isn t just about shooting; it s also about the friends we make and have made and look forward to seeing each year. We hope that those of you who haven t experienced the hospitality of the Detroit Gun Club will do so at the 2013 Morrissey Motor State or our shoot in September, the Kasle Family Charity Open. We can promise you one thing, you will have too much fun!

50 50 MSANews January 2013 George B. Gilliam, Jr. Mt. Morris, Michigan Induction August 2012 Chet Crites Service Award George Gilliam began his shooting career in 1996, when he went out to Williams Gun Sight with a single shot, bolt-action.410 to try out our sport. He immediately decided that that skeet was for him, and purchased a Browning over-and-under. He shot 10,000 practice targets that year, then made the leap to registered skeet in George has been involved in the non-shooting aspects of our sport from the very beginning. He joined Genesee Sportsman s Club in 1997, and the following year was asked to serve on its Board of Directors. He became the President of Genesee in 2001, and has held that position until 2009, and then again from 2011 to the present. He has served on the Michigan Skeet Association Board of Directors continuously since 2003, was Vice President from 2004 through 2007, and President from 2008 through When George started shooting at Genesee he saw they had no licensed referees. So, after attending the MSA Referee Clinic he started his own program at the club to develop new referees, training nearly 50 over the years. Jane presents George with Hall of Fame Plaque. In 2000, he took over running the club s NRA Women s and Children s program, providing free skeet lessons. In addition, he aggressively pursued introducing skeet to Junior shooters, starting Michigan s Scholastic Clay Target Program and was the impetus for free MSA memberships for Juniors. He also introduced a shooting program for the Girl Scouts in Genesee County, working with the Scout Leader to create a merit badge. The program started out as once or twice a year, and is now conducted five times a year. Nearly 800 Girls Scouts have earned their shooting merit badge, thanks to George s efforts, in the past nine years. George really loves his club, and was instrumental in efforts to update the clubhouse and fields, often covering expenses out of his own pocket. He also promoted registered skeet shoots, frequently offering special prizes for lady and junior shooters to encourage their participation. Continued on page 52

51 January 2013 MSANews 51 Frederick J. Richard Bridgeport, Michigan Inducted August 2012 Shooting Merit Fred went to Frankenmuth Gun Club in the fall of 1970 to, just look around. Skeet shooting looked like too much fun, and he couldn t resist going back. He was hooked and, little did he know, he would be spending his every last dollar shooting skeet! Though Fred shot in a number of leagues, he didn t start shooting registered skeet until 1978, the same year he broke his first 100 straight in the 12 Gauge event at the State Shoot, followed by another 100 straight in the shoot-off. He quickly became a force to contend with, garnering numerous championships. Fred won his first Michigan State Championship in 1979 in the 28 Gauge. In 1986, he was the Michigan State 28 Gauge, Doubles and High Over All Champion. Fred has been selected to four All-State Teams in 1982, 1984, 1985 and 1987, as well as numerous Gauge Teams. 53 January 2013 MSANews Kasle Family Charity Shoot WALLED LAKE, MI If I had to describe in a single word this year s Kasle Family Charity Open held at Detroit Gun Club September 14th-16th it would be WOW What an Outstanding Weekend! Great weather, great targets and great shooting! Kasle-Best Cup Prelim & Doubles Once again, Scott Behnke and his dedicated staff not only came up with a new theme, but always seem to top the previous year s performance... There were seven perfect scores in the Friday morning preliminary Kasle-Best Cup event; the shoot-in after the Doubles event was completed of seven 74 s determined who would fill the remaining three spots. In the afternoon, everyone took to the fields for the Doubles Event, with four shooters perfect and four stations to determine the Champion, Dave Scott, with Mark Vaillancourt, Runner-up; Jeff Moore, Third; and Charlie Peacock, AAA1. Seven 99s shotoff for places in AAA, and that shoot-off went seven BOXES! Other class winners were: Pat Darga (AA), Jared Davenport (A and Sub-Junior Champion), Denny Meinert (B), Frank Pantalena (C) and Dick Schroeder (D). Debbi Perry was Lady Champion and Zach Hoiles, Junior Champion. Just Measuring--Like in the Old Days! 12 & 28 Gauge Saturday dawned with clear blue skies and hardly a breath of wind, though it was a little cool for the morning flights. Eighteen shooters posted 100 s in the 12 Gauge Event. Among the perfect scores were two Sub-Juniors and a Junior shooter. Four shooters completed the first box in the shoot-off; Paul Giambrone missed on the last pair of the 2nd box for 3rd place. Kevin Guess Who this is? Monteleone and Sub Junior Jared Davenport continued into the 3rd box where experience trumped youth with Monteleone the victor over Davenport. Class First 100 s were Jeff Moore (AAA), Pat Wustoff (AA), Gordon Novak (A), Conni Place (B and Lady Champion), and Colton Swance, Junior Champion. Other top class honors went to Brian Loveyday Continued on page 54

54 54 MSANews January Kasle Family Charity Shoot Continued from page 53 (C) and Dick Schroedeer (D). Eleven went straight in the afternoon s 28 Gauge Event, and the number quickly dwindled in the shoot-off down to three. Giambrone left the door open the last time on four going, but neither Brian Rogers or Jon Senzer were able to capitalize on the opportunity, winning the Championship on the last pair. Rogers and Senzer continued on deep into the second station of box two with Rogers Runner-up and Senzer, Third. Class honors went to Fred Tschantz (AAA); Charlie Peacock (AA); Rookie Bill Saylor (A); Frank Pantalena (B); Gerald Novak (C); and David Seidel (D). Debbi Perry was Lady Champion; Zach Hoiles, Junior Champion, and Davenport, Sub Junior Champion. The end of the first day saw five individuals 200 straight, who a whole lot more down only one or two targets. Now that the routine matters were taken care of, we could get on with the show! Kasle-Best Cup The Kasle-Best Cup, which was previously the Walker Cup, debuted twelve years ago with the idea of putting some fun back into competitive shooting. Each year has had a different theme WWF; Rock Stars; West-Side Story (Sharks vs Jets); NFL (AFC vs NFC); Heroes and Villains; NASCAR; Professional Rodeo; HOA Champs. Pirates; the Olympics; Woodstock; Caddy Shack; and, Top Shot. Roger Kasle and Lauren Best are the sponsors of the 75-bird.410 Event 6 in which the top ten shooters compete for a beautiful Waterford Crystal trophy filled to the brim with cash. But, the shoot-off isn t conducted under the normal rules. This year s theme was Skeet Shot based on the movie Slap Shot about a down-on-their luck hockey team. This year s players were Sam Armstrong, Todd Bender, David Hebert, L.P. Giambrone, Kurt Grates, Kevin Monteleone, Mike Schmidt, John Shima, Marshall Steinbeck and Mark Vaillancourt. For those who don t know, the Kasle-Best Cup is not like any other shootoff you will ever witness It all starts with an impressive fireworks show and, this year, we had a special show put on by the Corps de Dance from the Dance Place in Waterford, Michigan. Then the shooters took the field with music blaring, the crowd heckling, and the commentators interrupting to question the shooters on what they are going to do on the next shot or what they did on the last! (We have club members who aren t even registered shooters that come out each year to watch this event; it s no wonder that DGC has a reputation for treating everyone to a great time!) The on-scene commentary was provided by the Hanson Broth- Continued on page 55

55 January 2013 MSANews Kasle Family Charity Shoot Continued from page 54 ers (Billy Ray Suggs, Al Magyar and John Fournier), who kept the audience and competitors laughing comparing old time skeet to modern skeet. Flash targets were used, to add to the excitement for the spectators. Given the crowd participation, it s no surprise the competitors, one by one, were quickly sent to the penalty box until it was down to Giambrone, Monteleone and Schmidt. Mike Schmidt, who looked pretty damn good as a blonde, scored the final goal to become this year s Kasle-Best Cup victor. He hoisted the coveted crystal bowl over his head as if it were Lord Stanley s Cup itself! 20 Gauge &.410 For Sunday s events, the weather was what fall in Michigan is all about a beautiful day; cool in the morning with sunny skies, warming in the afternoon with light wind gusts just enough to keep the shooters on their toes. There were s posted in the 20 Gauge Event; three managed to make it through the first box in the shoot-off, with Giambrone capturing the Championship on the fourth pair of the 2nd box, with Kurt Grates Runner-up and Jeff Moore, Third. Top class finishers were: Wayne The Players! Mayes (AAA); Bill Wainscott (AA); Don Walton (A); Hunter Staples (B), Dean Swance (C) and Diana Gilbert (D). Lady Champ was Loraine Malloy, Sub Junior Champ Davenport and Junior Champion Hoiles. With three events in the books, there were two shooters 300 straight Giambrone and Shima. Great conditions prevailed for the afternoon.410 Event, resulting in four perfect scores. And, yes, one of them resulted in yet another 400X400 by Giambrone! It took six pair in the shoot-off to decide all places with Grates the Champion over Giambrone, Runnerup; Howie Bailey, Third; and Vaillancourt, AAA1. Bruce Christian (AA); Jim Burch (A); Murrell Smith (B); Aaron Walton (C) and Stan Gorgacz (D) rounded out the class winners, with Davenport the Sub Junior Champion; Hoiles, Junior Champion and Kristie Haugh, Lady Champion. High Over All & High All Around The next best score for Runnerup was Grates with 398. Three 397s shot-off for the remaining spot on the podium, with youth prevailing this time around Not only did Davenport complete his sweep as Sub Junior Champion, he also claimed Event Third over Mayes (AAA1) and Moore (AAA2) in a shoot-off of 397s (also a personal best for Jared Great shooting!). Other class winners were Burch (AA); Novak (A); Jim Nierzwick (B); Bill Brown (C) and Dean Swance (D). Perry was Lady Champion and Hoiles Junior Champion. In the HAA event Giambrone won outright with a 499, followed by Grates (AAA); Moore (AA); Burch (A); Nierzwick (B) and Brown (C). Continued on page 56

Once again, a grand time was had by all at the best gun club in the country. Untold thanks go to all our sponsors for their generous support and donations; Scott Behnke and his assistant managers, Danny and Jake, for a great job of ensuring the targets flew true; the excellent referees for keeping their thumbs on the buttons and giving the targets to us when we called for them; Chef Lori, her kitchen staff (Janine and Greg) and waitresses (Angie, Jessica and Jenny), who made sure that no one went hungry (or thirsty!); and our shoot staff Ann, Debdoll and Kathy, who greeted the shooters with cheery smiles, did an outstanding job making sure the scores were promptly posted and the shoot-off sheets ready to go after the last shot was fired. Thank you one and all! Slap Shot Hero. One final word If you have never been to Detroit Gun Club, I urge you put us on your schedule for next year.
