8 Trail Raceway Hebron, OH Lakota East senior Dustin Horter put an exclamation point on his high school cross country career this past Saturday at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, OH. Horter etched his name into the OHSAA Cross Country record books by becoming the fifth male athlete to win back-to-back Division 1 State titles (modern day records). Dustin joins an elite group of individuals who have accomplished this tremendous feat; JJ White (91,92, Dublin), Allen Bader (00,01 LasSalle), Jeff See (03,04, Middletown), Zack Wills (08,09,10 Mason) and now Horter (16,17). With all eyes on him, expectations and intentions to win, and the weight of the world on his shoulders, Dustin had to battle Middletown junior Conant Smith down to the very last strides of the 5k (3.1 mile) race to defend his crown. From the starting gun, it was a 3-man race between Horter, Smith, and Matt Scrape (Pickerington Central). At the halfway point of the race, Horter and Smith broke away and battled side-by-side for 1.5 miles. Once the two athletes entered the grandstands with 200 meters to go, Dustin fended off two passing attempts by Smith. On Smith s third attempt, Dustin surged ahead to win by 0.4 seconds. Dustin s time was 15:03.4 to Smith s 15:03.8. To cap it all off, it was also Dustin s birthday and most of the crowd joined in on the chorus of Happy Birthday in a magical moment while he sat atop the podium one more time. " For the past four straight seasons at East, Dustin has been a perfect blend of talent, work ethic, and sportsmanship," said ecastatic head coach Adam Thomas. "No one deserves this honor more than him. It has been an honor and a privilege having him as a member of the LEXC Family." CONGRATULATIONS DUSTIN! HAWK PROUD OF YOU!
