4 / G r e e t i n g s from the G o v e r n o r STATE OFRHODE ISLAND O PROVIDENCE PLANTATIONS EXECUTIVECHAMBER PROVIDENCE FRANK LICHT GOVERNOR November, 1971 Congratulations on the development of your new campus. Bryant College has provided educational opportunities for thousands of Rhode Island and out-of-state students, and has prepared them for vital roles in a variety of careers. Your new athletic facilities bring an added dimension to an attractive and effective campus. The development of these new and modern installations enables the students to participate in vigorous, healthy competitive athletics. Bryant College has long been noted for its exciting basketball teams, and your new gym will enhance the game for the players and spectators alike. As your new campus expands an already superior educational institution, I join with all Rhode Islanders in hailing the beginning of a new chapter in the proud history of Bryant College. Governor Frank Licht Sincerely, ^7^*-'"*/-*^ Frank Licht GOVERNOR Table of Contents C o v e r Bryant fans need no introduction to the man who designed the cover for this special edition of the Indian Basketball News. Frank Lanning has been a friend of Bryant for many years. When the question arose who would design the cover only one name was offered in serious consideration, that of Frank Lanning. Frank is an institution within the Rhode Island sports fraternity. For over two decades Rhode Island sports fans have enjoyed his work in the Providence Journal-Evening Bulletin. An indication of the esteem in which he is held was demonstrated this past November when over 1,000 of Frank's friends gathered for a special testimonial dinner in his honor. The entire Bryant family considers itself fortunate to have Frank Fanning among its friends. 6 / B R Y A N T "It's a thing of beauty." That's the way one Rhode Island sportwriter described Bryant's new Tupper campus on his first visit to the Smithfield facility. And a thing of beauty it is. Few eastern collegiate campuses can match the combination of architectural genius and environmental splendor that the new Bryant campus has to offer. From the moment a visitor enters the long, tree laden drive leading to the campus, he realizes this is something new in the field of educational facilities. More than 200 acres of the former Tupper Estate have been converted into one of the East Coast's most progressive educational facilities. The new multi-purpose unistructure is the hub of the campus. The Unistructure is designed to accommodate the changing and constantly updated educational programs within the college. The glass-domed building contains classrooms, a library, dining rooms, a snack bar, indoor swimming pool, student lounges, faculty and administrative offices and an auditorium. In addition to the Unistructure, there are thirteen new student residences, each housing eighty-eight students. These modern dormitories are designed in suite arrangements, consisting of a living room, bath. Of course to the athletically inclined the most exciting aspect of the campus is the new Bryant gymnasium and the surrounding athletic facilities. An indepth story on the new gym and the other new athletic facilities appears on pages Below: Main Entrance of Unistructure. Above: A View of New Dorms.

10 T H E B O S S M A M Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach Tom Folliard The Former PC Star has directed Bryant's Athletic Department during its greatest period of development Tom Folliard and a pair of fellow Washington, D.C. natives, Tom Burns, Heft) and Bruce Stewart. "I never dreamed we would have anything like this." Anyone who knows Bryant Athletic Director Tom Folliard wouldn't be surprised that this statement belongs to him. Tom is not one who spends a lot of time dreaming, at least he doesn't where the Bryant athletic program is concerned. Since his appointment as the Indians' first full-time AD in 1968, Tom hasn't had much time to dream about the future of the Indians' athletic program, he's been too busy getting things done. In the four years since his appointment the former Providence College basketball star has upgraded the standard of the Bryant athletic program to a par with most small college programs in the East. The first major step he took was to apply for membership in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The E.C.A.C. is the governing body for all eastern N.C.A.A. schools and membership is of utmost importance for any college that hopes to upgrade its athletic program. One year after it applied, Bryant was admitted to the E.C.A.C. and Tom was on his way to building one of the top small-college athletic programs in New England. The chief example of Tom's success story as an A.D. is his own basketball record. In three years since he took over as head coach, his basketball teams have compiled an impressive overall record while earning two N.A.I.A. regional playoff bids and a Naismith Conference co-championship. But basketball isn't the only sport which has experienced success under Folliard's direction. All seven of the Indians' varsity sports have initiated extensive development programs since Tom took command of the athletic department and the results are beginning to show with winning records and various regional championships. Tom Folliard probably never has dreamed of a Bryant team winning a national N.A.I.A. or an N.C.A.A. small-college championship; but he thinks about it a lot.

Since 1962 when varsity basketball was resumed at Bryant after an absence of almost two decades, the Indians basketball teams have been registering impressive records. It was in 1964 that the Indians' round ball program really began to flourish. That year, Tom Duffy, a former schoolboy coach in Pawtucket, was appointed head coach. Duffy didn't waste much time showing the Indians the way to success. In his first year at the helm, Duffy led the Indians to a 16-6 season and proved to be the first of what was to lead to four consecutive Naismith Conference championships. Duffy went on to compile a four-year record of 70 victories against only 20 defeats before he turned over the reigns to Tom Folliard in the spring of The highlight of Duffy's coaching career came in 1967 when he was named "Coach of the Year" by the Rhode Island Association of Words Unlimited. The star of the Indians during the "Duffy Days" was a young man named Tom Smile. The Pawtucket High graduate was the high scorer for four consecutive years between 1964 and 1967 as he went on to become the first member of the Bryant "1,000 Point" club. All totaled. Smile holds seven all-time Bryant scoring records including the all-time leading scorer mark with 2,489 career points. Since Tom joined the selected "1,000 point" club in 1966, three other Bryant stars have joined the Club. Former Rhode Island schoolboy stars, Don Gray and George Yates and sharpshooting Bob Chuprevich all moved into the select circle in With the caliber of ballplayers now performing for the Indians, it shouldn't be long before Smile, Yates, Gray and Chuprevich have some company in their clubhouse.

17 30 John Westman Tom Burns Bruce Stewart 22 Ray Depelteau B R Y A N I N CO-CAPTAIN JOHN WESTMAN Senior Center John has been an Indian regular for the past two seasons. In his sophomore year, he started the first nine games then was sidelined with an ankle injury. Last season he shared the middleman duties with Sonnie Garrick. This season with Garrick having completed his eligibility, John is expected to be the big man on the boards for the Indians. BRUCE STEWART Junior Forward Like Tom Burns, Bruce is another product of the talent laden Washington, D.C. area. The 6-3 junior was the Indians number two scorer in his first season of varsity competition last year. He also was one of the Indians' top rebounders and is expected to play a large role in the Indians' success plans this season. T D I A N S CO-CAPTAIN TOM BURNS Senior Guard Tom is the only letterman in the Indians' backcourt this season. The 6-1 Washington, D.C. native saw action in 24 of the Indians' 25 games last season and is expected to be the mainstay of the Indians' backcourt this season. He also may see some service as a forward during the season. RAY DEPELTEAU Junior Forward Ray shared the number two scoring honors with Bruce Stewart last year with a 13.4 average. His.518 field goal percentage was the highest on the Indians last season and his 7.9 rebounding average placed him third in that category. This season he and Stewart are expected to be the Indians top marksmen up front. Glenn Canton Rick Lense Brian Ahearn 12 Ned Bohan

18 Rick Shanley 44 Bob Moll Frank McCormack RICHARD LENSE Junior Rich is the big man squad this season. The Center on the Indians 6-7 junior for Great Neck, Long Island, saw action in the final 17 games of the season last year and proved that he can be a valuable asset to the Indians this season. He is expected to share the middleman position with cocaptain John Westman and freshman Bob Moll. GLENN CANTIN Sophomore Guard Glenn was the leading scorer on last year's freshman team. The 6-3 backcourt ace is an excellent shooter and is expected to be the top marksman on this year's varsity. The former high school Ail-American from Crosley High in Waterbury, Conn, averaged over 25 points per game for coach Bill Stein's frosh last season. BRIAN AHEARN Junior Guard Brian joins the Indians this season after two outstanding seasons at Rhode Island Junior College. The 5-10 guard was voted the Most Valuable Junior College player in Rhode Island last season. His addition to the squad gives the Indians one of the top small college backcourts in the East. NED BOHAN Freshman Guard Ned is an all-state selection from La Salle Academy in Providence, R.I. He is an excellent ball-handler and is expected to be the leading playmaker this season. He is expected to share backcourt duties with co-captain Tom B ns. Glen Cantin and Brian Ahearn this season. RICHARD SHANLEY Sophomore Forward Rich was the top rebounder on last year's freshmen team. At 5-11 he is exceptionally small for a forward but he makes up for his lack of size with an extremely aggressive playing style. He should see a lot of action in his first year of varsity competition this season. ROBERT MOLL Freshman Center Bob is the second biggest man on the Indians this season. The 6-6 frosh from Fairfield, Conn, will give the Indians added strength up front as he combines with co-captain John Westman and Rich Lense. FRANK McCORMACK Junior Center Frank is a junior college transfer from Becker Junior College in Worcester, Mass. An excellent ball-handler and shooter, he will be a welcomed asset to the Indians' backcourt this season. Coach Tom Folliard Asst. Coach Bill Stein J.V. Coach Joe Fowlkes

21 Entrance to new Bryant Gym A D R E A M C O M E S T R U E New 2,800-seat Gymnasium Feature of Athletic Complex It's only about 15 miles from the East Side of Providence to the Tupper campus in Smithfield. But to Bryant athletic enthusiasts they are worlds apart. After decades of being forced to deal with outdated facilities Bryant athletes now are graced with one of the most modern collegiate athletic complexes on the East Coast. The highlight of the new complex is the 1.3 million dollar gymnasium. The gymnasium, with its 2,700 seating capacity, will serve as the first permanent home of the Bryant basketball team. The spacious main floor contains three regulation basketball courts featuring a special inlaid "tartan" playing surface. The center court will act as the main court for all varsity contests with side courts used for intramural activities. The two-story structure also houses the athletic department offices, mens and womens exercise rooms, two sauna baths and a large conference room overlooking the main court. But the gymnasium is not the only exciting feature of the new athletic complex. Other features include six championship tennis courts, an all-weather outdoor track, varsity baseball and soccer fields and several large intramural playing fields. All in all it's a long way from the East Side, and its two tennis courts, undersized baseball field and the old Bryant Gym on Hope Street.

25 A L O O K A T T H E O P P O S I T I O N Rhode Island College's Rick Wilson RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE December 3rd at Bryant Rhode Island coach Bill Baird is one of the most successful small college coaches in the East. In six seasons at the helm of the Anchormen, he has compiled an outstanding record and has led the Anchormen to the N.A.I.A. regional tournament for three successive years. This season looks like another successful one for Baird. With small college Ail-American Rick Wilson leading the attack, the Anchormen possess one of the strongest offenses in New England. Wilson, who can / play just about any position on the floor averaged over 24 points per game last year in leading the Anchormen to a 21-4 and the finals of the N.A.I.A. tourney. Joining Wilson on this year's squad will be returning lettermen Karl Augenstein and Don Suggs and a host of promising newcomers led by freshmen Reuben Alford and Elbert Hines of the Bronx, N.Y. MIDDLEBURY Holiday Tournament, January 1st and 2nd. Middlebury will be making its first appearance in the Indians' Holiday Tournament this year. The Panthers are scheduled to meet defending champion Stonehill in the opening round on January 1st. Leading the Panthers attack will be sophomores Al Turner and Russ Chapel. Turner was the Panthers number two scorer last season with an 12.2 average while Chapel registered an 8.2 ppg. mark. However, coach Tom Lawson will be hard pressed to find replacements for last year's leading scorer Jim Keyes and top field goal shooter Jon Torrant. NASSON February 7th at Bryant February 19th at Nasson Jim Stephenson begins his first season at the Lions' helm with four of last year's starters returning. Pat Brosnahan, Rick Meehan, Pat Nicodemus and Norm Belanger were all members of last year's starting unit. Brosnahan is the top point getter among the group with a 22.0 avera ge and Meehan was the top playmaker with nine points and 11 assists per game. However, Stephenson will have to find a replacement for last year's captain Marty Scannell if he hopes to improve upon last season's record. UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE January 10th at Delaware The Indians and Fighting Blue Hens will be facing each other for the first time in history this season. Blue Hen coach Ed Carpenter will be looking to improve upon last year's record. Heading this year's squad are a pair of returning lettermen, Lee Swayze and Ken Helfand and a host of promising sophomores up from last year's freshmen team. The leading newcomers appear to be Bob Mack, the leading scorer on last year's frosh team and Jim Shedzeliewski, a transfer from N.Y.U., who averaged 21 points per game last season. SOUTHEASTERN MASS. UNIVERSITY February 4th at North Dartmouth, Mass. This should be one of the best year's in SMU history. Coach John Pacheco has eight returning lettermen and five outstanding newcomers available for action. Heading the list of returning veterans is the sophomore duo of Bill Edwards and Paul Chevalier. Edwards and Chevalier were the Corsairs leading scorers last season with 16 and 13 ppg. averages respectively. Joining Edwards and Chevalier will be several outstanding newcomers including freshmen Leon Amando and transfer Kevin Phelan, who becomes eligible in February. COLBY Holiday Tournament, January 1st and 2nd The White Mules will be Bryant' - in the opening in the opening round of the Indians' Holiday Tourney. The Mules have recorded two straight tourney triumphs over the Indians in the past two years. However this year they will be without the services of their all-time scoring leader, Doug Reinhardt. Leading the Mules Attack this season will be co-captains Matt Zweig and Gary Veilleux. Zweig was the Mules number two scorer last year with an 11.8 average. Sophomores Tom Sullivan and Bill Clay are expected to give the Mules added offensive strength this season. BABSON December 11th at Bryant February 25th at Babson Junior Tim Vincent heads the list of six returning lettermen reporting to coach Bill Olsen this season. Vincent was the Beavers leading scorer last season with a 21.4 average. Vincent is expected to be the mains-

26 tay of the Beavers offensive unit which also features junior Jack Teitsma and sophomore Pete Hansen. Joining this trio will be returning lettermen Gary Kurtz and sophomore Rod Anderson. GORDON January 25th at Gordon February 16th at Bryant Hal Murdoch is beginning his 19th season at the helm of the Fighting Scots. Murdoch will have seven returning lettermen at his disposal this season. Heading the list will be 6-6 junior Wayne Young and 6-5 Bill Alexson. Young was the Scots leading scorer last year with a 20.0 scoring average while Alexson averaged 17 points per game. One of Murdoch's toughest assignments will be finding a replacement for last year's captain Lowell Bakke. NICHOLS February 9th at Nichols The Bisons have five lettermen returning last year's team. Senior Bob Payton is expected to be the Bisons' top marksman again this season. The 6-3 forward averaged 25 points and 11 rebounds per game last year in leading the Bisons to an 11-9 record. In addition to Payton the Bisons have two other returning lettermen who averaged in double figures. Sophomore center Ray Clarke could be the key to the Bisons success hopes this season. The 6-6 middleman averaged 14 points and nine rebounds last season in his first year of varsity competition. Other returning lettermen and last year's scoring averages are Gary McNulty, 15.5., Greg Pogue, 5.5 and Marty Love, 6.4. UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN December 14th at New Haven Coach Don Burns has a quartet of high scoring seniors at his disposal this year. Leading this foursome is Larry Faust, a 6-5 forward. Faust was the Chargers leading scorer last season with a 21.1 average. Joining Faust will be seniors Larry Fortune, Pete Perhack and Greg Jones. A pair of outstanding sophomores Skip Gilman and Vic Kirilichin are expected to give Burns added depth. STONEHILL Holiday Tournament January 1st and 2nd Coach Jim Dougher has four starters returning from last year's championship Holiday Tourney team. Last year Dougher led the Chieftains to the best season in Stonehill history with a 21-4 mark and a berth in the small college NCAA Tournament. Leading the Chieftains attack again this season will be the Holiday Tournament MVP, Mile Allocco. The 6-5 junior from New Providence, New Jersey averaged 26.7 ppg. last season as he became the sixth player in Stonehill history to score over a 1,000 points. Allocco's supporting cast this season will include center Frank Labonia, backcourt men Henry Jackson and Bob Moore and senior Paul Whitley, up front with Allocco. The Chieftains meet Middlebury in the opening round of the Holiday Tourney on January 1st. ST. FRANCIS December 3rd at Bryant February 18th at St. Francis The Red Knights from Biddeford, Maine lost five men from last year's Naismith Conference championship team but still are considered the team to beat in the Conference again this year. The main reason is sophomore forward Tony Williams. Williams, averaged over 200 points and 25 rebounds a game last season in leading the Knights to their first Conference title. Joining Williams in the starting lineup this season will be the only other returning letterman, senior Brian McBride and a pair of junior college transfers, Rich Wilson and Steve Donahue. QUINNIPIAC December 6th at Bryant January 31st at Quinnipiac Coach Burt Kahn will be trying to sweep his third straight series against the Indians this season. Kahn has another powerful quintet this season, led by captain George McDowell. McDowell was the Braves top rebounder and one of the leading scorers last season.
