Series: First Meeting The Week Ahead The University of Connecticut volleyball team will play in Gampel Pavilion for the first time during 2011 this weekend, as they host the UConn Toyota Classic. The Huskies will host Holy Cross, Howard and Binghamton for the two-day event (Friday, September 2 & Saturday, September 3). UConn opens the weekend with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Holy Cross on Friday, and will then face Howard (12:30 p.m.) and Binghamton (7:30 p.m.) on Saturday. Last Time Out The Huskies opened the 2011 season this past weekend with three matches at the TCU Tournament. UConn opened the weekend with a 3-0 victory over Grambling State, before falling to Texas Tech and the host Horned Frogs. Kirk Earns All-Tournament Honors Senior Jordan Kirk represented the Huskies on the TCU All-Tournament team this past weekend after collecting 36 kills (.258 hitting percentage), 22 digs and three blocks. Kirk had a weekend and team-high 15 kills against Grambling State and Texas Tech, while she also posted a team-best.519 hitting percentage against Grambling State. On The Road To 1,000 After posting 36 combined kills this weekend, Jordan Kirk needs just 158 kills during her final season to reach the 1,000 kill milestone. Over the past three seasons she has posted 230 or more kills each year, including a career-high of 298 as a sophomore. Kirk would be the 12th Husky to reach the 1,000 kill mark and the fourth under head coach Holly Strauss-O Brien. Maugle Makes The Most Of Husky Debut Freshman Devon Maugle had a stellar first weekend in a Husky uniform, as she posted 22 kills (.283 hitting percentage), 22 digs and four blocks during the TCU Tournament. Maugle had a team-high 11 digs against the Horned Frogs, while she was second on the team with a career-high 13 kills against Texas Tech. Wonderful Wattles Sophomore Jackie Wattles had an excellent homecoming last weekend, as she tallied career-highs in kills, hitting percentage and blocks in her home state of Texas. She posted a career-high 11 kills against Grambling State while also recording a personal best.348 hitting percentage. Against Texas Tech, Wattles had a team-high four blocks (1 Solo, 3 Block Assists) en route to a career-high in the category. BIG EAST Standings After the first weekend of action, Jordan Kirk ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in kills, averaging 4.00 per set. After posting 15 kills on 27 attempts against Grambling State, Kirk also ranks third with an individual match-high attack percentage of.519. Angela Roidt also ranks in the top-10 among BIG EAST setters, ranking ninth with 9.67 assists per set. New Faces For 2011 The Huskies welcome six freshmen to the roster for the 2011 season, as two outside hitters, three defensive specialists and one setter join the Husky lineup. The outside hitters include Karson Ratliff (6 0 -Wake Forest, N.C.) and Devon Maugle (6 1 -Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), the defensive specialists include Amy Christensen (5 7 -Ashburn, Va.), Brianna Datti (5 3 -Durham, N.H.) and Sage Esposito (5 4 -Milford, Conn.), while Katie Robinson (5 10 -Los Altos, Calif.) is the setter. New Coaches For 2011 The Huskies also welcome two new faces to the bench this season, as Brad Keller and Ellen Herman join the Husky coaching staff as assistant coaches. Keller comes to UConn after spending the past five years serving in the same role for the men s volleyball teams at UC Irvine and USC, while Herman joins the Huskies after a four-year playing career at Ohio University and a one year stint with a professional team in Germany. Scouting The Crusaders Holy Cross enters the weekend with a 1-1 record after splitting its first weekend of action during The Crusaders participated in the Beanpot Classic, defeating Central Connecticut and falling to Fairleigh Dickinson. Following the tournament, senior Kathleen Colpoys and freshman Hannah Grace Stokes were named to the All- Tournament team. Friday s contest between UConn and Holy Cross will be the 14th between the two teams, with UConn holding a slight 7-6 advantage UConn Volleyball GAME NOTES

3 Scouting The Bison Howard enters the UConn Toyota Classic on an 0-4 slide, as they lost all four matches at the Panther Invitational last weekend. During the invite, the Bison faced Pittsburgh, Eastern Kentucky, St. Francis and Duquesne. Saturday s contest will be just the second between the two teams. Scouting The Bearcats Binghamton enters the weekend looking for its first win of 2011, as the Bearcats dropped all four matches at the Mizzou Tiger Invitational last weekend. So far this season, Kristin Hovie leads Binghamton with 33 kills, while Annelot Nieuwenhuis has added 22. Xiomara Ortiz leads the Bearcat defense, picking up 39 digs through the first weekend of action. This weekend s contest will be the first between UConn and Binghamton. Next Up The Huskies will host Sacred Heart in a midweek match-up on Tuesday, September 6, before taking to the road again for the UNH Tournament. During the UNH Tournament (Friday, September 9 & Saturday, September 10) the Huskies will face Fairfield, Indiana State and the host Wildcats.
