Series: Connecticut leads 7-0 Last Meeting: Connecticut, 3-2 (10/30/10) Holly Strauss-O Brien Head Coach Seventh Season Overall Record BIG EAST Record The Week Ahead The Huskies return home, where they are 6-3 this season, to take on Notre Dame and DePaul in an effort to make a late season push toward the BIG EAST Tournament. UConn faces the Fighting Irish on Saturday October 29 and the Blue Demons on Sunday October 30. Both games will take place at 2:00 pm at Gampel Pavilion. Last Time Out Connecticut dropped a pair of road contests at Villanova and Georgetown last weekend. The Huskies fell to the Wildcats 3-1 and Hoyas 3-2. Against Villanova, UConn tied the match 1-1 after a second set win before falling in four and won the second and third sets, each, against Georgetown before dropping each of the last two. Senior Jordan Kirk set a weekend-high with 15 kills against the Hoyas, while junior Mattison Quayle and freshman Devon Maugle each netted 14 in the 3-2 loss. All three tied for the team-lead against the Wildcats with 10 kills apiece. Junior Angela Roidt dished out 32 assists in the first game of the weekend, while freshman Katie Robinson came off the bench with 28 helpers in game two. For the weekend, Connecticut hit.130 collectively and its opponents attacked at.203. Gampel Pavilion ALL HOME MATCHES IN BOLD CAPS About the Huskies Connecticut enters the weekend with an overall record of after defeats at Villanova and Georgetown to drop to 1-7 in the BIG EAST. The Huskies as a team have attacked at a rate of.215 for the season, while holding opponents to a.204 hitting percentage. Senior Jordan Kirk averages 3.42 kills per set with 267 on the season. Junior Mattison Quayle has netted 251 kills on a.224 attack percentage for 3.10 per set. Junior libero Kelsey Maving has totaled 412 digs for a 5.09 average per set, while classmate and setter Angela Roidt averages 9.62 assists per set on 770 for the season. Quayle Garners BIG EAST and ECAC Honors Quayle was named the BIG EAST and ECAC Volleyball Player of the Week for the week ending October 16. Quayle led the UConn attack in a 2-0 week that included a nonconference win over Fordham and the team s first league win of the season, which came against St. John s. For the week, she totaled 41 kills, averaging 5.13 kills per set. Over a five-match stretch between October 2 and 15, Quayle recorded 83 kills and attacked at a.257 rate. She has also picked up 50 digs en route to three double-doubles over that stretch. Milestone Markers Kirk and Maving each reached career milestone in back-to-back games to open the month of October. First, Kirk became the 12th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills against Syracuse on Sunday, while Maving became the 10th Husky to surpass 1,000 career digs in a 3-0 win over Hartford. Kirk needed just four kills heading into the match and got it on her first attack of the second set en route to a match-high 13. She became the fourth player to reach the career milestone under head coach Holly Strauss-O Brien. Maving recorded the 1,000th dig of her career early in the third set against the Hawks. Kirk currently stands at 1,073 career kills, tied for eighth all-time, while Maving ranks ninth with 1,113 digs. Strauss-O Brien Earns 100th Career Win With a three-set victory over New Hampshire at the Holly Young Invitational September 10, the Huskies gave head coach Holly Strauss-O Brien her 100th career victory. Strauss-O Brien became the 10th active BIG EAST coach to reach the 100-win mark. Seeing Double Four Huskies have posted double-doubles so far this season. Quayle pulled ahead of Kirk for the team-lead with her fourth of the season coming against St. John s. Kirk posted her fourth of the season against Virginia (9/17), including a season-high 18 kills. Freshman Devon Maugle registered the first of her career with a 12 and 12 effort vs. the Cavaliers. Roidt became the fourth Husky to contribute to this list with a then seasonhigh in assists, 49, and digs, 12, at USF. Maving s Defensive Efforts Aside from reaching the 1,000-dig mark for her career, Maving also surpassed 400 for the season, averaging 5.09 digs per set. Against Fairfield (September 9), she recorded a season-high 30 digs and has now posted 30 or more digs three times throughout her career. Maving also accomplished the feat once as a freshman and once as a sophomore. She is the sixth BIG EAST student-athlete to post at least 30 digs in a match this season, while Villanova s Kim Maroon tallied a season-best of 36 against Delaware. UConn Toyota Classic Champs! With three, 3-0 sweeps, the Huskies claimed the 2011 UConn Toyota Classic Championship on September 2 and 3. the Huskies defeated Holy Cross, Howard and Binghamton en route to earning their fourth title at the two-day tournament. 3 New Faces For 2011 The Huskies welcome six freshmen to the roster for the 2011 season, as two outside hitters, three defensive specialists and one setter join the Husky lineup. The outside hitters include Karson Ratliff (6 0 -Wake Forest, N.C.) and Devon Maugle (6 1 -Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), the defensive specialists include Amy Christensen (5 7 -Ashburn, Va.), Brianna Datti (5 3 -Durham, N.H.) and Sage Esposito (5 4 -Milford, Conn.), while Katie Robinson (5 10 -Los Altos, Calif.) is the setter. New Coaches For 2011 The Huskies also welcome two new faces to the bench this season, as Brad Keller and Ellen Herman join the Husky coaching staff as assistant coaches. Keller comes to UConn after spending the past five years serving in the same role for the men s volleyball teams at UC Irvine and USC, while Herman joins the Huskies after a four-year playing career at Ohio University and a one year stint with a professional team in Germany. Scouting the Fighting Irish Notre Dame has won four straight BIG EAST matches, most recently a clean 3-0 sweep of the USF Bulls, last weekend. Overall the Fighting Irish are 12-8 and hold a 5-3 league record. Freshman middle blocker Jeni Houser leads the team in kills (212) and is second in attack percentage (.272). Sophomore outside hitter Andrea McHugh ranks second on the squad in kills (204) and digs (245). At setter, sophomore Maggie Brindock has collected 502 sets and at libero, senior Frenchy Silva has picked up 313 digs. Scouting the Blue Demons DePaul and Connecticut are tied in the league standings with identical 1-7 BIG EAST record. Overall, the Blue Demons own a 5-18 record. As a team, DePaul hits.152 and allows opponents to hit.259. Freshman outside hitter Amy Lanski leads the Blue Demon attack with 215 kills. Senior Samantha Geiger and freshman Katie Gamsky have each eclipsed 300 assists, with Geiger leading the team with 331.
