4 The Commonwealth Coast Conference Champions Men s Basketball Season Preview The Colby-Sawyer men s basketball team, who finished fourth in the TCCC standings last season and reached the TCCC semifinals for the second straight time, received two of the 14 first-place votes in this year s preseason poll. The Chargers enter the season with an extremely young squad that features just one senior. The team lost its top three scorers from a year ago, including two new members of the one thousand point club, Dave Rosso 10 and Jon Chaloux 10. The team also lost a lot of height from last year and its top two rebounders. However, the squad does see the return of the fourth and fifth scorers in shooting guard Will Bardaglio and point guard Corey Willis. Bardaglio is lethal from the outside and knocked down 40% of his treys last season en route to 79 makes. Willis is the floor general looking to improve on his team best 158 assists from a season ago. Colby-Sawyer welcomes seven newcomers to the roster with a mix of post players and guards. THE FRONTCOURT The Chargers return junior captain James Tobin (Brookline, N.H.) who appeared in all 27 of the team s games last season. He averaged 5.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, while shooting an efficient 51.4% from the floor. James will be one of the starting forwards this season. Sophomore Corey Willis Also returning is lone senior Brandon Carbone (Portland, Maine). Hindered by injury last season, he failed to see court time but is healthy coming into this season. Brandon will be a solid post player off the bench for the Chargers. Junior Ian Davis (Rochester, N.H.) returns for his third season with the Chargers. He appeared in six games last season. The newcomers to this year s team include freshmen Damian Melnicove (Dresden, Maine), Robbie Burke (Cheshire, Mass.) and John Roberts (Casco, Maine). Burke provides a well balanced attack offensively in the paint and should be near the top of the team in rebounds. Roberts, the tallest member of the team, should provide a last line of defense and alter the opponent s shots as they drive. Melnicove should see minutes off the bench. THE BACKCOURT The Colby-Sawyer backcourt returns junior captain Will Bardaglio (Wayne, Maine), junior guard Zach McBey (Franklin, N.H.), junior Dan Pendergast (Canton, Mass.), and sophomore Corey Willis (Easton, Mass.). Bardaglio, who averaged 11.1 points per game last season, will start at shooting guard this season. He will continue to be a deep threat for the Chargers after knocking down 79 three pointers for the second straight season. He connected on a team best 40% of his three-point attempts last year and moved into 7th on the all-time career three pointers made list. McBey will provide coach Foti a viable option of the bench at the shooting guard position. He played in all 27 contests last year and was reliable from the free throw line. Willis is the Chargers floor general handling the ball and setting his teammates up for good shooting opportunities. He totaled 158 assists in his first year and added 7.1 points per game. He should move into the top ten in career assists this season. Pendergast also returns for his third season with the team. Joining the team this year are freshmen Cody Addison (Essex, Mass.), Stephen Thorpe (Chicago, Ill.), Eddie Tirabassi (Portland, Maine), and Rashaad Wharton (Cambridge, Mass.). Thorpe is a true ball-handler and will spell Willis when he needs a breather. 2

5 ~ 2001, 2002, Men s Basketball Season Preview OVERVIEW Even with the loss of an extremely talented senior core last season, this year s team returns two starters, which were two of the top five scorers from a year ago. With the addition of a few immediate impact freshmen, this year should be an exiting one for 19th year coach Bill Foti. The team will have a tough beginning to the season with six straight games away from the David L. Coffin Field House. The Chargers will begin action against Plymouth State at the annual Jacob s Bridge through Autism Classic at NHTI. The team then travels to compete in the All Metals Industries Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Rivier. Colby-Sawyer finishes the road trip with a pair of games at the Hockenbury Tournament hosted by Norwich. Colby-Sawyer plays two more non-conference games at the start of the January before they enter TCCC play. They begin with Regis at home and end with Western New England in Springfield, Mass. Senior Brandon Carbone The Chargers will have their first and only home contest of the first semester against Bowdoin before playing in the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament at Worcester State to wrap up the 2010 portion of the schedule. Coach Foti ranks among the all-time coaching leaders in the nation, and has guided the program to double-digit win totals in each of his 18 seasons, including eight 20 plus win seasons. The Chargers were picked to finish fourth in TCCC play for the season. Gondek 95, and Andrew St. Clair 06), two Academic All-Americans (Brendan Carney 02, St. Clair 05 and 06) four NABC All-Northeast District players (Gondek, Jim McGilvery, Matt George and St. Clair) and six ECAC All-Stars (Gondek, McGilvery, George, St. Clair, Brian Wilder and Grant Kelly). In addition, McGilvery, George and St. Clair have gone on to play professionally in England. Matt George was inducted into the Colby-Sawyer Athletics Hall of Fame in Last season the Chargers finished overall, 7-6 in TCCC play and qualified for the conference tournament for the 15th straight season, earning the No. 4 seed. Prior to his arrival in New London, Coach Foti spent six years as an assistant coach at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, where he earned his masters degree in business administration. 10 Season Review The Commonwealth Coast Conference Champions The Colby-Sawyer men s basketball team made its 15th consecutive trip to the The Commonwealth Coast Conference postseason after posting a 7-6 conference record. The team recorded at least 15 wins for the 16th time under 18-year Head Coach Bill Foti s. The Chargers, who were voted to finish second by the conference head coaches, began the season with a tough loss to Keene State. Colby-Sawyer rebounded nicely by winning their next three contests including a pair of victories to win the Rivier Tip-Off tournament. After dropping a home contest to Castleton State by four points, the Chargers rattled off two more wins before the Holiday break. The team then played in a pair of tournaments in Staten Island, NY and Williamstown, Mass. The Chargers lost an overtime heartbreaker to Randolph, and then fell to the host of the tournament, the College of Staten Island, After the turn of the new year, Colby-Sawyer began the Williams College tournament with an victory over Worcester State. Williams, who was ranked 10th in the nation, defeated the Chargers in the championship game. The next contest came at Curry, who defeated the Chargers in overtime. All was not lost as Jon Chaloux became the 13th member of the Colby-Sawyer 1000 point club with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the game. The Chargers held their home court versus Nichols, and Eastern Nazarene, to move to 11-7 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The team then dropped its next three contests to Roger Williams, Endciott, and Salve Regina. Next on the schedule was the undefeated Fighting Scots of Gordon, who entered the game 9-0 in the TCCC. Freshman Jason Chevrefils (Manchester, N.H) controlled the paint and scored a game-high 19 points on 9-14 shooting to lift the Chargers to a victory. In the Chargers next contest, freshman Corey Willis (Easton, Mass.) drilled a last second three-pointer to lead Colby-Sawyer to a win over the University of New England, the defending TCCC champions. Colby-Sawyer fell to Wentworth, but won their regular season finale over Western New England to finish with a 7-6 conference mark. Colby-Sawyer had one more non-conference test before the beginning of the conference schedule. That game came at 7th ranked Middlebury. The Chargers were tied at the half and felt they had a chance to take down a perennial powerhouse. Hot shooting from beyond the arc and a wide margin in made free throws gave the Chargers the advantage, resulting in one of the biggest wins in school history. Senior Jon Chaloux (Barre, Vt.) scored a game-high 25 points in the victory. Sophomore James Tobin (Brookline, N.H.) had a breakout game with 17 points and 13 rebounds off the bench. The Chargers came back to earth in their first TCCC contest as they fell at Regis Colby-Sawyer quickly responded with a pair of conference wins against New England College and Anna Maria. Senior Dave Rosso (Wilmington, Vt.) had a game he would not soon forget in lifting the Chargers to a win over the AMCATS. He scored his 1000th career point with eight minutes to play, becoming the 12th Charger to reach the plateau, and then hit the game-winning three pointer with nine seconds left. 8 With five teams with a 7-6 record in the conference, the Chargers earned the top seed (4th) of those teams thanks to a 3-1 record. Colby- Sawyer opened the TCCC Tournament with an win over No. 5 seed Nichols, Jon Chaloux and Jason Chevrefils poured in 21 points each. In the semifinals, the Chargers had to travel to Gordon, who ended the conference season with only the one loss to the Chargers. The Fighting Scots, who earned the top seed, avenged the regular season loss and ended Colby-Sawyer s season with a win. Dave Rosso 10 The Chargers were led by their three seniors Jon Chaloux, Dave Rosso, and Chris Cox (Graniteville, Vt.). Chaloux finished his career with 1168 points, ranking him 12th on the all-time list. He also ranks second in blocks with 109, 10th in rebounds with 503, and ninth in three-point field goals with 123. For his accomplishments he was recognized several times at the end of the season. Jon was named First Team All-TCCC, was NH Division III Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Year, and he was selected to play in the New England Senior All-Star game.

17 ~ 2001, 2002, 2003 The Commonwealth Coast Conference Established in 1984, The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) provides each student-athlete with a positive experience in their pursuit of excellence, through high academic standards, quality competition, and a meaningful student life. The conference sponsors intercollegiate competition among its members in a variety of sports and supports the NCAA Division III philosophy. Originally a conference solely for men s basketball, the league included seven teams: Anna Maria, Coast Guard Academy, Curry, Emerson, Hellenic, Salve Regina and Wentworth. Roger Williams joined the conference in the spring of 1985 and Hellenic withdrew that fall, as the league remained at seven members. Also added in 1985 was a men s cross country championship. Women s basketball and men s soccer were added in 1986, as Gordon College also joined the conference fold, becoming the conference s eighth member. In 1989, Regis College began play in the conference and a softball championship was added. New England College took Emerson s place in the conference that fall. Over the next 10 years, four more schools entered the conference, including: Eastern Nazarene (1992), Colby-Sawyer and Nichols (1994), and the University of New England (1999), putting the conference membership at 13. TCCC has continued to grow in the number of championships offered. The conference will sponsor 14 championships in nine different sports in the season, and also offers competition in three invitational sports (golf, swimming & diving and track & field). In the fall of 2007, the conference added its 14th member, Western New England College and Gregg Kaye also became the conference s first full-time commissioner.
