4 Preview After two straight Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championships and back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances, expectations are high for the Colby-Sawyer Women s Basketball Team. The Chargers begin 2006 as the preseason favorite in the CCC, picked first in the CCC North Division preseason poll. Last year s team posted the program s fourth straight 20-plus win season, and, under the direction of 13th year Head Coach George Martin, the Chargers look to continue their success. The Chargers return two starters from last year s squad; senior guard and co-captain Amy Beaton (Haverhill, Mass.) along with junior Noelle Surette (Buxton, Maine), who both look to provide a young Chargers squad with a dash of experience. Amy has done a great job in preseason, said Head Coach George Martin. She has picked up her leadership and has done a real good job of getting the ball where it needs to go when it needs to get there. (Reading, Mass.), Emma Pasquale (Eliot, Maine), Kayt Racz (Worthington, Mass.), Kristen Romanko (Mansfield, Mass.) and Stevi Valle (Wales, Mass.) I expect a lot from the sophomore class, Coach Martin stated. This will be the class we will rely on the most for points and minutes. Kali Coleman had a lot of good minutes last year and will be able to step in and be a real offensive threat. Defensively she gets into passing lanes and disrupts other offenses. Noelle s role is probably going to change this year. She needs to be more of a scorer for us. She is going to be on the perimeter a little more and will have to show more of an all-around game. The two other upperclassmen on the roster, senior co-captain Shawn Kithcart (Middletown, N.Y.) and junior Maritza Salema (Stratham, N.H.) also look to add their leadership as upperclassmen to a team dominated by sophomores and freshmen. Katherine Guanci is new to Sophomore Emma Pasquale the program this year. She is a hard worker and is doing some good things. We are going to take some time and develop her into more of an outside player. Ellen Naughton started the first seven games for us last year and will be back helping run the point again this year. She is going to get a lot of minutes this year. Shawn has done a great job with leadership, said Martin. She and Amy, as captains, have really stepped up and taken over. She has been playing well, doing some really nice things this preseason offensively. Sophomore Kali Coleman Maritza has been out for the preseason with a back issue. Prior to her injury she was competing for a spot in the rotation and we hope to have her back soon. A sophomore class of seven players from all over New England makes up the majority of the Chargers roster this season: Kali Coleman (Portsmouth, N.H.), Katherine Guanci (Arlington, Mass.), Ellen Naughton Emma Pasquale had a great year for us last year. There were times when she was our best post player. In the preseason she showed us that it s coming back this year. She played well in the scrimmages and will be a threat offensively. Kayt Racz has worked on her game a lot over the summer and has come back a lot stronger. She will be in our rotation as well. She has been shooting the ball extremely well, and her three point range can extend defenses. Kristen Romanko is a little behind because of volleyball, but we expect that. She is a big, athletic body and she can run the floor extremely well. Stevi Valle has been playing more aggressively this preseason and really adds depth to our guard position. She gives us some flexibility in the backcourt. An exciting freshman class also joins Coach Martin s roster this season, looking to provide even more talent to an already talented Chargers team. Kate Callahan (Bridgton, Maine), Terri Duffy (Marshfield, Mass.), Michelle Havey (Franklin, N.H.) and Amy Hebert (Keene, N.H.) will all be looking to contribute in any way 3

5 possible. Kate Callahan had a tonsillectomy right before preseason and has been on the shelf so far. We hope to have her back by the start of the season. Terri Duffy is a presence in the post and can be an offensive threat. She also rebounds extremely well. She just needs time to figure out the college game. Michelle Havey adds some quickness to the team. She can really get out and cause problems for the other team s offense. She will fit in nicely Amy Hebert could be the smartest player, as far as basketball smarts go, I have ever had here. She knows how to play and she is always in the right spot. She gets the ball where it needs to go. The Chargers schedule doesn t make life any easer for Coach Martin and his young team. Bowdoin, ranked No. 2 in the nation in D3Hoops.com s preseason poll, and Springfield College are just two of the difficult non-conference opponents the Chargers will see before Christmas break. The Chargers also face a tough conference schedule, with teams like Salve Regina, Endicott, Gordon and Nichols all gunning for the two-time defending CCC Champion Chargers. The conference is getting tougher and tougher, said Coach Martin. The competition has elevated over the last few years. The conference is getting better and better all the time. Even after the preseason hype of being picked first in the CCC North and the success of the recent past, Coach Martin and the Chargers are not letting this distract them from taking care of business on the court. It s nice to be picked first, but now we have to back it up, said Coach Martin of his team s preseason accolades. I think it is more out of respect for what we ve done. We will play the games and see what happens. Commonwealth Coast Conference Women s Basketball Pre-Season Coaches Poll NEWPORT, R.I. In a poll of the 13 women s basketball head coaches in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), Colby-Sawyer College and Salve Regina University were favored to win their respective divisions for the season. The Chargers eliminated the Seahawks in a conference semifinal last February. Last season, Colby-Sawyer defeated Endicott College, 46-43, in the conference championship game for its second straight title. Ten of the 13 coaches completed this year s additional poll request to pick the 2007 Championship Game participants and title winner, with Colby-Sawyer (seven picked to be in title game, three picked to win championship) and Salve Regina (five picked to be in title game, three picked to win championship) as the predominant choices. 6 Head Coach George Martin 13th Season After 12 seasons at the helm of the Colby-Sawyer Women s Basketball Team, Head Coach George Martin has built the program into one of the premier programs in the New England region. His aggressive defenses and well-balanced offensive attacks have garnered success at both the conference, regional and national level. A young and talented team led the Chargers to their fifth Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship since 1997, and the team s fifth NCAA tournament appearance during that same span. Last season the Chargers averaged 67 points per game, and held a 13.3 point scoring advantage over their opponents. The Chargers also out-shot their opponents, averaging a 41.3 percent shooting percentage while holding their opponents to just over 31 percent. Under Coach Martin s guidance, the Chargers have competed in post-season play nine of the last 10 season, with five appearances in the NCAA Tournament and four berths in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament. The Chargers have also recorded 20 or more wins eight of the last 10 years and posted double-digit wins in conference play for 11 consecutive seasons. In 1999, his team set the program s singleseason victory total (25-4), including a 14-0 showing in the conference, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Since joining the CCC in 1995, Coach Martin s second year, the Chargers have posted a stellar 24-6 record in the conference tournament. Kristen Sorensen Season Recap The season started on a sour note, a 10 point loss to Western New England College, but the Chargers rebounded, winning six of their next seven games. At the winter break, the Chargers sat atop the CCC s North Division with a 6-2 overall record and a 2-0 mark in conference action. After two losses to begin the new year, Coach Martin s Chargers rattled off 14 straight wins to close out the regular season, outscoring their opponents by an average margin of 20 points. Led by senior Kristen Sorensen, who, during the streak, averaged 13.1 points per game, and newcomer Emma Pasquale, the Chargers stormed into the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed, hungry to repeat as champions. After dispatching Roger Williams (64-47) and Salve Regina (57-56), the Chargers took on Endicott for the league title. Kristen Sorensen scored on a jumper with 1:17 left and was fouled. She hit the ensuing free throw and put Colby-Sawyer up, Endicott cut the lead to one, 44-43, but the Chargers hit their free throws down the stretch, building a lead with three ticks remaining on the clock. Endicott made one last push up the floor, but the Gulls attempt to tie was stuffed by Sorensen, who blocked a last-second shot by Jodi Brown, as the Chargers secured the victory. In the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament, the Chargers drew Bowdoin College. Bowdoin used a series of small runs to break open the game in the second half, first stretching the lead to seven, 46-39, with 13:05 to play, and then kicking the lead up to 12, 53-41, with 10:23 left. The Polar Bears put the game out of reach with a 10-0 run, breaking to a margin with 3:00 left in the contest.
