The Colby-Sawyer/Bowdoin contest will follow the other first-round game at Brunswick, Maine, featuring Salem State against Brandeis, with two first-round winners meeting in the second round on Saturday at 5 p.m. LAST TIME OUT: Colby-Sawyer won its second straight Commonwealth Coast Conference title and fifth in school history on Saturday, racking up a victory over Endicott in New London. Anne Coulter (Hudson, N.H./Bishop Guertin) recorded a career-high 16 rebounds for the Chargers in the win, also scoring six points. Stacey Hildreth (Winchester, N.H./Thayer) and Kristen Sorensen (Coventry, Conn./Coventry) tied for team-high scoring honors, recording 12 points apiece. Colby-Sawyer's defense, which has been a team trademark all season long, held the Gulls to 27.6 percent shooting from the field. ABOUT BOWDOIN: Bowdoin earned its sixth straight New England Small College Athletic Conference championship on Sunday, knocking off top-seeded Bates, 68-58, in Lewiston, Maine. Bowdoin enters the tournament at 24-2 on the year with its only losses coming to Bates and Southern Maine during the regular season. Eileen Flaherty leads three players in double figures in scoring, averaging 15.9 ppg, while Marissa Berne is averaging 11.5 points per contest and Jill Anelauskas is scoring 11.1 per game. Bowdoin is currently riding a 13-game winning streak into the NCAA Tournament. HEAD COACH GEORGE MARTIN: In his 12th season, George Martin has guided the Colby- Sawyer women's basketball team to four Commonwealth Coast Conference Championships and four appearances in the NCAA Tournament. The Chargers have a mark during his tenure and a record in conference play, earning Commonwealth Coast Conference

2 Coach of the Year honors three times. Martin has coached 10 players to first-team all-conference honors, and has had three players named the conference's Player of the Year (Beth Chartier ; Michelle Dailey ; Sara Hammond ). THE SERIES: Colby-Sawyer trails Bowdoin, 21-2, in the all-time series dating back to the season. Colby-Sawyer won its two games in 1999 and 2000, the second game coming in overtime in Brunswick, Maine. The Polar Bears have won seven straight against the Chargers including this season's victory on Dec. 8 in Brunswick. WE MEET FOR THE FIRST TIME, FOR THE LAST TIME: Bowdoin placed five players in double figures as the Polar Bears picked up an win over Colby-Sawyer on Dec. 8 in Brunswick, Maine, as Bowdoin improved to 6-1 on the year. The Polar Bears were one of just seven teams to out-rebound the Chargers, holding a advantage on the glass for the game. Eileen Flaherty scored 17 points to lead the Polar Bears, while Julia Loonin and Lauren Withey scored 11 points apiece. Marisa Berne and Jill Anelauskas had 10 points each, with Anelauskas pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds for Bowdoin. For the Chargers, Kristen Sorensen scored a team-high 11 points while Noelle Surette and Stacey Hildreth had nine points each. COLBY-SAWYER IN THE TOURNAMENT: This season will be Colby-Sawyer's fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, with all five coming in the last 10 years. The Chargers have posted a 1-4 record in their previous four tournament appearances. Colby-Sawyer made its first appearance in 1997, hosting The College of New Jersey, falling 80-71, in New London. The following season, the two schools met again, this time in Ewing, N.J., with the Lions again coming out on top, Colby-Sawyer made it three-straight appearances in 1999, picking up its first win in NCAA Tournament play, defeating Hunter College, 74-60, before falling at Rowan, In Colby-Sawyer's most recent tournament appearance last season, the Chargers traveled to Ithaca and fell, 64-46, to the Bombers. WE'RE GOING STREAKING: Colby-Sawyer's three-game run through the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament extended the Chargers' winning streak to 17 games. The Chargers have not lost since dropping a contest at Middlebury on Jan. 10. The current winning streak is the longest since at least the season. Colby-Sawyer's previous long during that stretch was a 13-game streak during the third of three-straight NCAA Tournament teams in HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE: Unfortunately for the Chargers, Friday's game against Bowdoin won't be played at the David L. Coffin Field House in New London. Colby-Sawyer has been dominant on their home floor this season, posting a 13-0 mark in home contests. The Chargers are 9-3 in road games and 0-1 in neutral court contests. Commonwealth Coast Conference Standings As of Feb. 28, 2005 CCC Overall North W L Pct. W L Pct. 3 MASTERS OF THE CCC UNIVERSE: With Colby-Sawyer's 3-0 mark in the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament this season, the Chargers have improved their record to 24-6 alltime in tournament play. Since joining the conference prior to the season, the Chargers have posted a mark in conference play, recording at least 10 wins each season. In the CCC Tournament, the Chargers have also shown to be nearly unbeatable at home, posting a 22-2 mark in 24 conference tournament games played in New London. DEEP BLUE CCC: Colby-Sawyer is one of three Commonwealth Coast Conference teams that will continue their seasons this week. Endicott and Nichols were both named to the field of eight teams for the Eastern College Athletic Conference's Division III New England Tournament and will open up play on Wednesday. Endicott earned that tournament's fifth seed and opens up at Bridgewater State, while Nichols, the ECAC's seventh seed, will play a future Commonwealth Coast Conference member, Western New England College, in the opening round on Wednesday night. WNEC will join the CCC at the start of the school year. BATTLE TESTED: Colby-Sawyer this season has played just the one contest against an NCAA opponent, with that contest happening to be against its first-round foe, Bowdoin. The Polar Bears, on the other hand, have played an imposing schedule, with nine games against eventual NCAA Tournament teams. While five of those nine contests came against NESCAC foes, the Polar Bears still posted a 7-2 mark in those contests. Additionally, just three of those games were played in Brunswick, though Bowdoin was a perfect 3-0 in those games. TO THE VICTORS GO THE SPOILS: The three Colby-Sawyer seniors were each honored by the Commonwealth Coast Conference coaches when the post-season awards were announced on Saturday prior to the conference championship game. Kristen Sorensen was named first-team All-CCC, while Anne Coulter earned honorable mention All-CCC accolades. Not to be outdone, Lisa Cole (Athol, Mass./Athol) was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year. WORKING NO OVERTIME: Colby-Sawyer has played an astounding 126 consecutive games that have been decided in regulation. The CCC semifinal and final were close enough to be settled on the last possession, but the Chargers held on defensively both times. In the semifinal against Salve Regina, the Chargers did not allow the Seahawks to get off a final shot, while in the championship contest, Endicott did get off a shot, only to have it blocked by Kristen Sorensen with one second left. Colby-Sawyer's last overtime game came on Jan. 22, 2002, a loss at Salve Regina. 20/20 VISION: At 23-4 overall, the Chargers have already recorded their ninth 20-win season in school history. This is also the fourth straight year that Colby-Sawyer has crossed the 20-win mark. However, this marks just the third season that Colby-Sawyer has won 20 or more games during the regular season. The last time came in , when the Chargers won 21 games during the regular season on their way to a 25-4 mark. In , the Chargers also posted a 20-win regular season. Much like this season, in both of those two years, the Chargers also went on to win the CCC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. CHAIRWOMAN OF THE BOARDS: Senior Anne Coulter grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds in the Commonwealth Coast Conference championship game against Endicott on Saturday. In spite of sitting out her junior season, still ranks 12th in Colby-Sawyer history with 500 rebounds. She trails 10th-place Lisa Rodgers by 16 rebounds. For the season, Coulter is averaging 6.8 rebounds per game, second on the team behind Stacey Hildreth's average of 8.3. WELCOME TO THE CLUB: Seniors Kristen Sorensen and Lisa Cole became Colby-Sawyer's seventh and eighth players in school history to record 1,000 points just a week apart. Sorensen reached the milestone on Feb. 7 at Curry, while Cole accomplished the feat on Feb. 14 at New England College. The pair currently rank fifth and seventh, respectively, in Colby-Sawyer's career scoring list, with Sorensen having 1,105 to her credit and Cole recording 1,048 points. DOING IT WITH DEFENSE: During the Chargers' current 17-game winning streak, Colby- Sawyer has held its opponents to just 30.4 percent shooting from the field. In those 17 games, only Gordon, the University of New England and Roger Williams have shot better than 35 percent from the floor, while Anna Maria, New England College and Eastern Nazarene were each held to under 25 percent shooting. On the season, Colby-Sawyer is 22-3 when holding its opponents below 40 percent shooting from the field, and has not allowed an opponent to shoot better than 50 percent all season. NATIONALLY RANKED: For the season, the Chargers are allowing opponents to shoot just 30.7, a mark that ranks Colby-Sawyer third in the nation. 4 behind John Jay College (30.2) and Norwich (30.4) in field goal percentage defense. In addition to the team mark, junior Stacey Hildreth is ranked 24th in the nation with her 2.4 blocks per game average. BEATON'S HELPING HAND: In the Feb. 14 win at Curry, junior guard Amy Beaton (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) tallied 12 assists to go along with her three points. Beaton's 12 assists were not only a career high, but they also tied a Colby-Sawyer record for assists in a game that had stood for exactly 11 years and one day. The previous mark of 12 was set by current Colby-Sawyer assistant coach Beth Tower on Feb. 6, 1995, at Rivier. BACK INTO THE MIX: Junior center Stacey Hildreth missed the regular season finale and the CCC Quarterfinal game against Roger Williams on Tuesday due to an injury suffered in practice on Feb. 17. Hildreth returned to action and to the starting lineup in the CCC Semifinals, scoring four points and pulling down six rebounds to go along with three blocked shots against the Seahawks. NO SOUP FOR YOU: Colby-Sawyer's strong post play has led to the Chargers holding a advantage in blocked shots this season. Despite missing two games, Stacey Hildreth still has nearly as many blocks as Charger opponents (59 to 62). Emma Pasquale is second on the team with 36 blocked shots, including a key block with less than five seconds remaining in the win over Salve Regina on Thursday. In all, six different players have recorded 10 or more blocked shots this season. HANDLE THAT BASKETBALL: Colby-Sawyer's pressure defense has led to causing high numbers of turnovers from their opponents. The Chargers are 16-1 when forcing 21 or more turnovers this season, and are 7-3 when forcing 20 or fewer. The Chargers forced a seasonhigh 34 turnovers in the Jan. 28 win against Roger Williams, with 20 of those coming in the first half alone. In the quarterfinal game against Roger Williams on Tuesday, the Chargers again recorded more than 30 turnovers, forcing 31 in the 17-point win. STOP, THIEF!: Senior Lisa Cole became Colby-Sawyer's career steals leader in the December 6 win over the University of New England. Cole entered the year needing just 21 steals to tie Lisa Rodgers' career total of 245, and currently has 309 career steals. Cole is averaging 2.8 steals per game for her career and also holds the Colby-Sawyer record for steals in a game, recording nine against Salve Regina on Jan. 26, BACK FOR MORE: The season was to have been the last hurrah for Lisa Cole and the rest of the incoming class of However, a knee injury suffered during the summer of 2004 sidelined the guard for the entire campaign. Cole applied for, and received, a medical hardship redshirt and returned this season to provide additional senior leadership to a team with eight first-year players with Kristen Sorensen and Anne Coulter. 5 women's basketball team's campaign. Coulter, who is also a member of the Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team, elected to take the season off to rest. Coulter's return this season has helped to give the Chargers one of the deepest frontcourts in New England, if not the nation. CLOSING OUT A CAREER: As they approach the end of their collegiate careers, Lisa Cole and Kristen Sorensen have made a lasting mark on the Colby-Sawyer record book. Along with Cole holding the record for steals with 309, the pair are also prominently positioned in several other categories. Sorensen is fifth in scoring with 1,105 points, while Cole is seventh in that category, recording 1,048 points. The pair are fifth and sixth, respectively, in field goals made with 446 and 413. Cole is also ranked fourth in three-pointers made (149) and 10th in assists with 222, while Sorensen is also ranked 10th in free throws made with 166. PUT ME IN COACH, I'M READY TO PLAY: Freshman Lauren Vassallo (Oxford, Conn./Seymour) came off the bench on Feb. 18 to drop in 20 points and eight rebounds against Anna Maria. The 20 points tie Vassallo with Stacey Hildreth for the team's single game scoring lead this season. Hildreth recorded 20 points on Jan. 12 against Gordon and on Nov. 29 against Plymouth State. Vassallo has found playing time difficult to come by this season in the deepest part of the team, averaging just 6.4 minutes in 19 games played. Still, when she has seen time, the freshman has contributed, ranking seventh on the team in scoring. GOING DOWNTOWN: Guards Amy Beaton and Kali Coleman (Portsmouth,N.H./Portsmouth) certainly haven't shied away from shooting the three-pointer this season, with both players having a fair amount of success from long range. Both players are shooting 28 percent from three-point range on the season. Of Beaton's 23 made field goals on the year, 17 of them have come from beyond the arc, while just 11 of Coleman's 27 field goals on the year have come from inside the three-point stripe. YOUTH MOVEMENT: If this season has been any indication, the Chargers shouldn't experience much of a dropoff with the departure of the three seniors following this season. While Kristen Sorensen, Anne Coulter and Lisa Cole rank in the top three on the team in scoring, the Chargers have plenty of depth behind them to fill in next season. Emma Pasquale (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) ranks fifth in scoring on the year, averaging 7.9 points per game, while sophomore Noelle Surette (Hollis, Maine/Waynflete) is scoring 6.9 ppg, adding to the already deep frontcourt. In all, the Chargers have eight first-year players and two sophomores, giving head coach George Martin a solid foundation for the next few seasons.
