4 A Message From Your Surrey Fire Fighters To all participants, The Surrey Fire fighters are pleased to host the 13th Annual Surrey Fire Fighters Sr. Girls Goodwill Basketball Classic. The tournament is organized and hosted by the Surrey Fire Fighters, along with support from staff and students of Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary as well as many businesses and charity groups. We would like to thank all teams for participating, and wish each team good sportsmanship, hard work and lots of fun. As part of our scholarship program for high school graduates, we aim to recognize those committed to education and outstanding volunteer service in the community. Several $750 scholarships will be awarded to worthy recipients at this year s tournament. We are pleased to be able to include this feature in the tournament, and congratulate all students that help to build a strong community through volunteerism. Special thanks go to Westland Insurance Group for assisting us with our youth and sport initiatives. Westland Insurance Group has jumped onboard and is supporting this tournament as our presenting sponsor! This year (2014) marks the 13th anniversary of the classic, which means over $65,000 in bursaries has been awarded to Goodwill recipients. Of course, this would not have been possible without the financial commitment from who have put their trust in the Surrey Fire Fighters Foundation to deliver these funds back into the community. 5 Tamanawis A Message From The Superintendent Of Schools Dear Athletes and Coaches It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 13th annual Surrey Fire Fighters Senior Girls Basketball Goodwill classic. In today s world, highlighting the concepts of goodwill and sportsmanship are more important than ever. I have every confidence that as participants in this year s tournament you will demonstrate a high calibre of play and engage in the joy of competition. Tournaments like this one are fun, challenging and memorable. I convey my best wishes to all of you and trust that, regardless of the outcome, you are able to derive satisfaction in knowing that you gave it your best effort. One of the special aspects of this tournament is that it promotes the added dimension of service to the community. Acts of goodwill provide illustrations of those very important values of giving of oneself in the service of others and giving to those in need. Pledge to make a difference to your community. It is a gift to the future that pays off in countless ways. 14 Kylie Arno Post 13 Anna Aujla Post 12 Harkirit Bahad Post 5 Namrita Bahad Guard 11 Gurneet Dhaliwal Guard 6 Gurpinder Dhesi Guard 15 Gabrielle Ghag Guard 9 Avneet Gill Post 10 Keerti Jhutti Guard 8 Meena Kandola Post 23 Jaiya Rai Guard 21 Priya Sandhu Post 22 Sahtaj Sangha Post 20 Komalpreet Sekhon Post 7 Jessica Singh Post On behalf of the Surrey School District I want to offer heartfelt thanks to our friends and community partners, the Surrey Fire Fighters who not only sponsor this tournament, but also dedicate time and energy to numerous charitable works throughout the community. Through these efforts in supporting health care, education, and those in need, our Fire Fighters set a standard for charitable service to the community for all citizens to aspire. I also greatly appreciate all tournament organizers and volunteers at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary, Enver Creek, Fleetwood park, Holy Cross and Princess Margaret for making this event possible. Your many hours of planning and preparation are greatlyappreciated. I thank the tournament sponsors and scholarship donors for contributing to the future education of our young people. Finally, it is important to honour all the coaches for giving so many hours of your time to our young athletes, so that they may enjoy learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom. In teaching them about teamwork, respect, perseverance, and responding to challenges, you have enriched their lives in many ways. Your efforts are greatly appreciated by your players and their parents. Good luck to all of you. Mike McKay Superintendent of Schools (retired)
