A sea of pink was a delight to see at the end of the day at After a cool start to the day, sunscreen was the call of the day as it simply got hotter and hotter as the day progressed. By the time finals came around many of our players looked hot and bother as we are simply not used to competing on outside courts and dealing with the sun in our eyes but the girls dug deep as they always do and brought many successes our way. We should never be deterred playing against much stronger, taller players as we have proven time and time again that if we stick to our game plan, play fast, skilled netball, success will still come our way. Thank you to all the parents for your ongoing support. A special thank you to Jim Tasseron for always lending a hand with the gazebo. Enjoy the holidays everyone and your time away from netball. A word from our Physio Jocelyn First of all, congratulations to all of you girls at the Tournament in Diamond Creek. Even with the weather being ridiculously hot and the sun beating down, you girls ran hard and played hard and the results show this! Today I wanted to talk about heel pain. Do you have any heel pain that is slowing you down? A common complaint from young athletes is the occurrence of heel pain and usually occurs during the growth spurt associated with adolescence. In girls, this growth spurt can occur anywhere between 8-13 years old, and in boys years old. During this growth spurt the Achilles tendon can pull on the back of the foot and cause heel pain called Sever s disease. It may occur in one or both heels. Symptoms include heel pain when running, inability to rise onto the toes without increasing heel pain, limping, and it can be felt in one or both heels. On examination the heel may be sore to touch, there may be swelling around the insertion of the achilles tendon, the calves may be tight and there may be reduced ankle movement. Sever s disease may be managed through activity modification, a heel raise inserted into the shoe, stretching of any tight muscles to decrease tension and stress on the heel, and addressing any abnormal biomechanics. If you have any more questions about how to manage your heel pain, contact your physiotherapist or the team at Watsonia Physiotherapy.

NOW FROM THE COACHES & PLAYERS - Diamond Creek Tournament Reports UNDER 11 Pink Pauline Zealley Another great display of team work and the ongoing development of skills learnt was evident at this tournament. 3 games were won by large margins with one close game and a loss against Parkville. We had a bad start to that game failing to convert when opportunities presented. With a few changes at half time the girls came home strong but ran out of time in a hard fought out game losing by 2 goals. We need to experience more close games such as this to ensure that we are able to stick to our game plan under pressure and to ensure our passes reach their target when playing on a strong defensive team and to convert our opportunities to goals under pressure. Bree and Olivia continue to work well together in goals ably supported by our mid courters, Jenna, Avena and Holly who generate great speed through the centre court and goal third and with their defensive pressure create many turnovers and chase down the loose balls. Alice, Siena and Ava always work hard in defence and provide many opportunities with their strong one on one defence and two hand rebounds. Together we will continue to learn and develop and work as a team to be the best we can be. Thank you parents once again for your ongoing support and Margaret for keeping us organised. UNDER 11 Pink Olivia Biviano Our second tournament was at Diamond Creek. It was only the second tournament for many of us and not knowing what competition to expect, we didn't know if it would be the same competition than the last tournament. We weren't as nervous as our first tournament but I know that we were nervicited if that is even a word. We finished second on the ladder by the end of the day, our toughest competition was Parkville, we lost the game against them by 2 points. Parkville are definitely a strong side and a target for future games. First of all well done to all of the defenders for getting as much loose balls and intercepts which made the ball come to our end of the court. Second of all well done to the mid-courters for getting the ball and being fast and well done to the shooters for getting the goals in. I would like to thank Pauline for being our coach and giving us great feedback and she tells me how I can improve my game and shots. I would like to thank the mums and dads for driving us and cheering us on. And a very special thanks to Margaret, Jenna's mum for our being our Team Manager.

UNDER 11 White Amy Leahy Banyule white, what a day! Undefeated with only 5 goals scored against us. I am so proud of this team and how hard they worked at this tournament. It reached 35 degrees and the girls never gave up during any of the six games we played. The girls took on any instruction that was given to them and I was able to see it being implemented on the court. It was also evident that the girls had worked on things that I had spoken to them about at the last tournament and this was great to see. It has been great to see the ball flowing down the court with the team using their channels effectively. Our whole team put in a great defensive effort making it difficult for our opponents to get the ball down the court and score goals. During the first couple of games we were having more difficulty getting the ball out of defence. We spoke about defensive throw in's the team had practised at training and the girls were immediately able to implement this on the court effectively. Our goalers worked well together in the goal circle and able to adapt to work with different players. We need to continue to work on following our shots in and getting the rebounds. The midcourt played well throughout the day, executing good passes to the goalers. Great team effort girls. Thanks to our team manager Gab! UNDER 11 White Lara Hart On Sunday the 19th of March we played our second tournament at Diamond Creek. We all had to wake up early to get there on time but I think it was worth it. Even though it was freezing cold in the morning it turned out to be a sizzling hot day. But it didn t matter because the U/11 Banyule Whites got through all of our six games undefeated!! Go Banyule Whites! We played absolutely amazing and when I was playing GK I barely got the ball. These tournaments are so fun and I can t wait for the next one, but I can only hope there ll be at least one tournament throughout the year with indoor courts. A lot of thanks to Amy, our coach, for cheering us on and giving us helpful advice to improve our gameplay, and to all our parents for getting us to the Diamond Creek courts and for putting up with the heat for 6 hours while we played some incredible netball

UNDER 13/1 Sharon Ashworth Diamond Creek certainly put on a hot day for our second tournament to date. The Open 13 s team lined up with their full squad and performed admirably throughout the day considering the high temperature for playing outdoor netball. The girls displayed great netball in our morning games against Parkville, Casey and Doncaster and applied all the aspects of the game that we have been working on. We then had a bye over the lunch session and finished off the remainder of the games with all wins on the board, putting us on top of the ladder at the completion of all the rounds. This was a great effort considering how hot the afternoon was and the girls and coach were certainly feeling the effects of it. The girls fronted up to fourth on the ladder, Parkville, in the semi final and again had their game on and won quite comfortably, resulting in a grand final appearance against Frankston. The grand final was a much more closer contest than the game against them earlier in the day, and to the girls credit they remained vigilant and confident with the physical pressure applied to them and won the game by 3 goals. The girls were fantastic undefeated all day a sterling effort. The girls are working hard both at training and in at Parkville and their efforts are being rewarded with some really good netball. Thank you to our captain for the day Evelyn, assistant coach Ruby and team manager Laura, for your assistance.

UNDER 13 /2 Olivia Turner Dickason Talk about a sea of Pink on the 19th of March!!! The Diamond Creek tournament was such a success for Banyule. The Under 13/2s welcomed Evie into the team this week and boy did she have a ripper tournament, well done! We started the day with successful wins over Parkville, Doncaster, Casey and Dandenong. Throughout my years of coaching I have never gone through a tournament without having one shocking game and that game was against Frankston, and the result wasn't good. The next couple of games we had strong finish which is great to see going into finals! With a easy win over Parkville in the semi we came up against Frankston and the girls killed it. Winning by four points in the grand final, the tournament was a huge success! Congratulations to all the Banyule teams who defeated Frankston, Outstanding effort!! UNDER 13 /2 Leona Hristovska On the 19th of March we headed off to the Diamond Creek tournament with 7 games to play. We headed out to a good start by winning six games and losing one against Frankston by three goals. Which that made us on top of the ladder, that means we head into the semi-final against Parkville which was a good game but we came out with a win by 4 goals. Off we head into the grand final against Frankston which will be a tough game with a bit of nerves but we just had to shake it off and play our best. As a good way to finish the day we won the grand final by 4 goals and everyone was so happy. Well done girls can t wait for the next tournament. U13/2 Report on DC Force Tournament After weeks of training we finally had our first tournament at Yarra Ariels. The day started off well with us winning our first 3 games easily. We then had a tough game against Yarra 2 losing by 1. We returned to form with an easy win against Frankston followed by a close match against Valley, winning by 1. We finished on top of the ladder and went in to the semi s against Altona. We had a great first half but Altona was too strong and won by 1 goal. Congratulations to all the girls for having a great first tournament. We have never played together as a team before so it was a great effort to get to the semi s. Thanks to Liv for being a great coach and supporting us, Andrew for being team manager and to our families for coming to watch. Eden Graham

UNDER 13 /3 Jasmine Adams So second tournament already and hopefully more success. Losing Evie to the two s, (CONGRATULATIONS!) we welcomed in Alyssa who was a bull at a gate ready to go! Looking at the fixture we didn t play any of the same teams from the previous tournament so we didn t know what to expect. We started off really strong beating PV Comets 14-0; we went through the day allowing only 11 scored against us across the 6 round robin games. With the closest game being 5-4 against DC Force.. which nearly gave me a heart attack! Semi-final time we played Casey and beat them convincingly and saw us face Frankston in the Grand Final who we had beaten earlier in the day.. but I was still nervous! (the girls not so much) We were down at half-time but I but a lot of my vocal coaching from the sidelines (sorry girls) and we got up in the second half and won! That means my amazing team are 2 wins from 2 tournaments and went through this one undefeated. I am very proud of the girls who played hard all day in 30+ degree heat and the pelting sun; they never gave up.. I also wanted to apologise to Bailee who I played consistently in C and never complained; Your a champ! So proud to be called your coach guys and you re making my job look easy! CONGRATS to ALL 3 U13 teams who made and WON the Grand Finals.. lets continue the success! UNDER 13 /3 Rubi Hawkins Diamond Creek was a blast. On the 19/3/2017 Banyule Blue took the courts, we played 6 matches before finals, with a straight win across the board. We worked as a team, our defenders did an amazing job keeping the ball from the opposing side, our mid court and shooters were also on the money. By this stage we had reached a percentage of 2500 and we were all ecstatic! Into the finals we went. The first final we undertook was a tricky semi against Diamond Creek but we came out on top. It was a fight to keep the nerves down as went head to head with Frankston in the grand final, it was a really close match winning by one. (The heat had us knackered) thanks to Jaz for all the coaching, support, tips, fun -and the Powerade, you rock! GO BANYULE!!!!!

UNDER 15 PINK Libby Ellis Well a great tournament had by my girls. We welcomed Lindy Stephens and Victoria Nekelo to the group due to unavailabilities. The girls played with so much energy and enthusiasm regardless of how hot it was out there. They were a pleasure to coach. As a coach I was most pleased by the structure the girls are starting to stick by. They also adjusted to different types of defence such as a centre court press which I am pleased about. We lost one game through the rounds then went on to win both our finals comfortably. Well done girls a tough day running with 8 but a rewarding day in the end. The Diamond Creek Tournament was a great day for the 15 1 s. We lost one game by 1 point against Frankston, but in the end we won against them in the grand final, overall it was a great day and everyone placed well especially in the heat. A big thank you to Victoria and Lindy who came down from the under 17s to help out in Goals Stephanie Calabrese

Under 15 White - Amy Winchcoomb What a hot day for netball the DC Tournament was. We were placed in the same section as the 1s side which was always going to make it a hard day being up all the other clubs number 1 teams. The 15 2s took a little while to get going and went down in the first 3 games. We regrouped and after this the girls showed how good they all can be and didn't lose another game. The most pleasing thing of the day was seeing how much the girls wanted to play for each other and prove that they do have the ability to match the other clubs 1s teams. The support and backup for each other was exciting to see and proved that when we all play our part the results will come. We were very unlucky to miss out on the finals by a couple of percent however we showed that we definitely have the skill and ability to match any team.

Under 15 Blue Jo Davies Team 3 was blessed with super support on the day which made our 10 games possible! Water fillers, ice gatherers, shade seekers, coffee delivery, scorers.. Girls, we have great parents! Thank you parents, you deserve the medals along side your champions. The joy of having such talented and enthusiastic players to guide through a tournament was matched by my expectations of 110% effort on court and co-coaching with sideline support on their rotations off. We played as a champion team rather than a team of individuals, delivering ball to great leads, adjusting to conditions, opposition and the whistle. Our greatest challenge of the day was matching our speed with oppositional height. Nothing new, but had us a little undone in our 1 game loss for the day. To "speak to" and make the loss a focus for change in our game play heading into finals turned out to be a positive. Shoulders up, re offer, re offer, any lose ball belongs to us, make good decisions. We cheered on the u15 1s first half of their final, had 10 mins to revisit our own strategy and then took to the court for a VERY physical final. Nail biting as it was, we maintained our composure, patiently transitioned ball from defensive intercept, through fast moving centre court to strong holds and leads. It's worth repeating... Each player wore 2 positional bibs and the seamless team work remained. Full team of 9 contributors in u15 3. Very impressed. Very proud coach. On Sunday the 19 th of March the under 15/3 s played their second tournament for the year. It was held at Diamond Creek, the home courts of Diamond Creek Force. We knew it was going to be a scorching day, so we kept up our fluids up and made sure we smothered ourselves with sunscreen. We also had fun following the shade. As a team we played our positions exceptionally well and because of this we made the finals. The team managed to win all its games the only loss was to Frankston Opals. We were slightly fatigued, hot and bothered and the final score was 4-8. Apart from that one game, we worked really well as a team. Our defensive efforts put immense pressure on the opposition, the midcourt players were always there to back up passes, shut down the opposition and pick up loose balls. The team s ability to run in the heat was outstanding. It was a tough day for the shooters, as the sun was sometimes in our eyes, but we managed to adjust and convert most of our shots and our rotations worked well. As a result, the team s percentage was higher than the other teams in the division, so we finished on top of the ladder. The grand final against Doncaster was very physical and an extremely tight game but we managed to beat them by one goal (you can imagine the stressful faces from the parents on the side line). It was a great outcome winning the tournament as a new team. Thanks to Jo and the coaching staff at Banyule, we are constantly improving. It was impressive to see many Banyule teams receive medals at the end of the day. Thanks again to our coach Jo, Karen (team manager) and of course all of the 15/3 team members. A special mention goes to Sharon, who walked all the way to the local pub to purchase a bag of ice to cool the team down, very thoughtful Chloe Tsonis
