Freshman center Imani McGee- Stafford finished with two new career highs in Texas loss to Texas Tech Wednesday night in Austin: eight field goals and three assists. Aaryn Ellenberg scored 18 points for Oklahoma, which led by double digits for most of the second half. Last Time Out: vs. Texas Tech [Jan. 16, 2013] Texas fell to the Texas Tech Lady Raiders, 66-59, in Big 12 action on Wednesday night at the Frank Erwin Center. Freshman center Imani McGee-Stafford tied her career high with 20 points, 14 of which came in the second half. She also grabbed 11 rebounds for her sixth doubledouble of the season, a figure that ranks third in the Big 12. Sophomore forward Nneka Enemkpali added 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and 8-of-11 from the charity stripe. UT strung together several scoring runs but were unable to have the same success on defense. Texas used a 7-0 second-half run to cut the lead to four at with nine minutes remaining, but Texas Tech bounced back with a quick three-pointer from Casey Morris and a steal and layup from senior guard Monique Smalls. Morris and senior guard Chynna Brown and each scored 20 points for the game to lead the Lady Raiders. Wins vs. Losses Texas is holding opponents to 48.9 ppg on 28.6 percent shooting from the field (120-of-420) in its seven victories this season. 3 Davenport Heating Up in Conference Action Just one game after notching a then career-high 12 points against Oklahoma (Jan. 5), freshman guard Empress Davenport scored a career-high and teambest 14 points at West Virginia (Jan. 9). Davenport s playing time has increased to 34.8 mpg in league games compared to 26.7 mpg during the non-conference season. Roberts Dialed In Junior guard Ashley Roberts is shooting 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from long distance since beginning Big 12 Conference play. Roberts three buckets from beyond the arc at West Virginia (Jan. 9) marked the fifth time in a nine-game stretch where all of her made field goals came from 3-point range. Mazionyte Returns to the Court Junior transfer GiGi Mazionyte returned to the court in Wednesday s contest at West Virginia after missing the first 13 games due to a left ankle injury suffered in practice on Nov. 7, 2012, just two days before Texas opened the season. Strength of Schedule Texas has faced five opponents ranked in the AP Top 25 during its 15 games this season and owns a 1-4 (.200) record against those foes. During its nonconference schedule, UT faced ranked opponents from the Big East (St. John s), Pac-12 (UCLA) and Southeastern Conference (Tennessee). Sophomore Nneka Enemkpali has been the team s high scorer in six games, while junior Chassidy Fussell has earned the distinction five times. Freshman Imani McGee-Stafford has led the Horns in scoring on four occasions. Senior Cokie Reed, junior Ashley Roberts and freshmen Empress Davenport and Brady Sanders round out UT s leading scorers. Cleaning the Offensive Glass Texas posted a season-high 27 offensive rebounds -- two more than the Oklahoma s total and UT outrebounded its Red River rival by 23 (48-25) in a loss (Jan. 5). Draining the Treys Junior guard Ashley Roberts nailed a career-high four baskets from beyond the arc in Texas Big 12 opener at Iowa State (Jan. 2) to tie junior guard Chassidy Fussell s individual season-high mark for a Longhorn set against Jackson State and Central Connecticut State. Hattis Joins Women s Basketball Squad Freshman middle blocker Sara Hattis, a member of the 2012 NCAA Champion Texas Volleyball team, has joined the Women s Basketball squad for the remainder of the season (beginning Dec. 29). Hattis came to the Forty Acres as a highly touted two-sport athlete at Cleveland HS in Rio Rancho, N. M. The 6-4 forward was ranked among the top 100 hoops products nationally before deciding to play volleyball at UT. One-Two Scoring Punch Junior guard Chassidy Fussell and sophomore forward Nneka Enemkpali lead Texas with 15.5 and 14.4 ppg, respectively. Through all games as of Jan. 16, Fussell is the sixth-leading scorer in the Big 12 and Enemkpali ranks ninth. UT, Oklahoma State and Kansas are the only three schools with two or more players ranking among the top-10 scorers in the league. Lineup Shuffle Texas head coach Karen Aston has tested eight different starting lineups through 16 games. Sophomore forward Nneka Enemkpali has started each game, while junior guard Chassidy Fussell has started 13 contests after missing two in early December due to injury. Four freshmen have cracked the starting lineup at various times including Empress Davenport (14), Imani McGee-Stafford (10), Celina Rodrigo (10) and Brady Sanders (1). Block Party Texas 5.6 bpg ranks second among all Big 12 Conference teams and is also 14th-best nationally (through all games Jan. 17). Freshman center Imani McGee-Stafford leads all league freshmen with an average of 2.4 bpg, a mark that ranks 21st among all NCAA Division I players and third in the conference. Seeing Double Sophomore forward Nneka Enemkpali leads the Big 12 Conference with eight double-doubles this season. Freshman center Imani McGee-Stafford is on Enemkpali s heels with six, which is the third-best mark in the league. Enemkpali is One of a Kind Through games as of Jan. 16, sophomore Nneka Enemkpali is the only player in the Big 12 Conference averaging a double-double. She is second in the league with 10.0 rpg and is the ninth-leading scorer with 14.4 ppg. TCU s Latricia Lovings is the only other player averaging double-figure rebounding. Fussell s Big Game After missing two games with a head injury, junior guard Chassidy Fussell bounced back to score a career-high 31 points against Tennessee (Dec. 16), shooting a perfect from the free throw line and willing her team back from a 19-point halftime deficit. Balanced Scoring Attack Behind Chassidy Fussell s team-high 15.5 ppg, two additional starters for the Longhorns are contributing double-figures. Sophomore forward Nneka Enemkpali is averaging 14.4 ppg and freshman center Imani McGee- Stafford is adding 10.8 ppg.

4 Owning the Boards The Longhorns have outrebounded all but five opponents and are averaging a league-best 46.6 rpg. Texas rebounding margin is the sixth-best among all NCAA Division I teams (thru games Jan. 17) and second in the Big 12 Conference. Sophomore forward Nneka Enemkpali ranks first among all players in the league and 44th nationally with 10.0 rpg. Enemkpali: Then vs. Now Sophomore forward Nneka Enemkpali has significantly increased her numbers in all statistical categories since her freshman season. It marked the second time in a three-game span that she reached double-figures in scoring and all 10 of her points came in the second half. Enemkpali and McGee-Stafford Sweep Big 12 Honors Nneka Enemkpali picked up Big 12 Conference Player of the Week honors for the second time in three weeks while Imani McGee-Stafford received her first freshman award (Nov. 26), marking the first time since the week of Jan. 5, 2004 (Jamie Carey and Tiffany Jackson) that the Longhorns swept the league s weekly honors. She also recorded nine blocks against CCSU, the most for a Longhorn since Ashley Gayle swatted 10 shots against Cincinnati on Dec. 28, McGee-Stafford connected on.632 (12-of-19) of her field goal attempts in Texas pair of home wins and was named Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Week (for games Nov ). Controlling the Boards UT outrebounded Hofstra 62-31, including a advantage in the first half (Nov. 10). It was the sixth time in school history that Texas recorded 62 rebounds in a single game, tying for UT s fifth-best single-game mark. The Longhorns have pulled down 50+ rebounds on five occasions this season. Enemkpali Sweeps POW Honors Sophomore forward Nneka Enemkpali earned Madness National Women s Basketball Player of the Week and Big 12 Player of the Week honors (for games Nov. 9-11) after a dominating offensive and defensive display that included back-to-back double-doubles at the WBI Tip Off Classic to begin the season. Enemkpali Dominates in Daytona Beach Sophomore forward Nneka Enemkpali recorded her first career doubledouble with 25 points and 12 rebounds in Texas win over No. 14/13 St. John s in the WBI Tip Off Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla. The following day, the sophomore forward posted another double-double with a gameand career-high 26 points and 10 rebounds in a victory over Hofstra. Enemkpali was named the tournament MVP after connecting on 18-of-25 field goals (.720) and 14-of-20 (.700) free throws. 5 Fussell Earns Preseason Big 12 Honors Junior guard Chassidy Fussell was named Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention in a vote of the league head coaches. Fussell, who earned preseason first team conference honors as a sophomore, was the Longhorns leader in points (520, 16.3 per game), 3-point percentage (.378), free-throw percentage (.905) and minutes (1,080, 33.8 per game). She recorded two 30-plus point scoring efforts and eclipsed the 20-point mark 12 times on her way to becoming the 38th player in Texas history to reach the 1,000 career-points mark. Wooden and Naismith Awards Notice Fussell In addition to Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention and a spot on the Wooden Award Preseason Top 30 List, junior guard Chassidy Fussell has been named one of 50 candidates on the Naismith Trophy early season watch list. Fussell Named to Wade Watch List Junior guard Chassidy Fussell was one of 25 players named to the preseason Wade Watch list. Considered The Heisman of Women s Basketball, the preseason list is compiled based on game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team and overall playing ability. Kamie Ethridge (1986), Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil (1989) and Edwina Brown (2000) are Texas three previous Wade Trophy recipients. Put Her on the Line Chassidy Fussell finished the season tied for second nationally in free throw percentage (.905, 86-of-95) among all NCAA Division I players. She connected on her final 24 free throw attempts of the year, a streak that dated back to Feb. 8, 2012, at Kansas. She connected on her first four attempts of the season to before ending her streak at 30 consecutive free throws. Offensive Output Junior guard Chassidy Fussell led Texas scoring effort last season with 16.3 ppg and notched 26 double-figure scoring efforts along the way. She was the second-leading scorer in the Big 12 Conference with 17.1 ppg in league play. During her collegiate career, Fussell has 64 doubledigit scoring games under her belt, including point games and three 30-point outings. All in McGee-Stafford s Family Freshman center Imani McGee-Stafford sports quite a family lineage when it comes to basketball. Her older brother, JaVale McGee (24), is a center for the NBA s Denver Nuggets. Her mother, Pamela McGee, and aunt Paula McGee, played basketball at USC, and her cousin Annette Smith-Knight was a member of Texas 1986 NCAA Championship team. Furthermore, McGee-Stafford s aunt Trisha Stafford-Odom played basketball at Cal and is currently an assistant coach at UNC. From the Diamond to the Hardwood Senior guard Nadia Taylor has joined the Texas Women s Basketball roster after a four-year standout career on the UT Softball team. Taylor completed her softball eligibility in May 2012 after playing in 234 career games with the Longhorns, including 231 starts. On the Texas Softball career lists, Taylor ranks third in RBI (132) and doubles (41) and fourth in on-base percentage (.427) and hits (219). She is tied for fifth in walks (87), ranked sixth in batting average (.337) and slugging percentage (.554) and tied for sixth in home runs (32). Family Ties Family ties are a common theme among the Texas roster. Junior guard Ashley Roberts and freshman guard Empress Davenport are first cousins and played together on the Duncanville High School girls basketball team for two seasons. Freshman center Imani McGee-Stafford is related to former Texas Women s Basketball standout Annette Smith-Knight. Smith- Knight s husband, Curtis Knight, is first cousins with McGee-Stafford s father, Kevin Stafford. Pair of JUCO Transfers Joining the Longhorns for the season are junior transfers Ashley Roberts from South Plains College and GiGi Mazionyte from Weatherford College. Duncanville native and two-time Western Junior College Athletic Association All-Conference First Team honoree Roberts is expected to add depth at the guard position for the Longhorns. Mazionyte (Palanga, Lithuania) averaged 15.3 points and 7.9 rebounds last season for Weatherford and was named to the Northern Texas Junior Athletic Conference All-First Team during both her freshman and sophomore campaigns. 6 Welcome Back to the Forty Acres First-year Texas head coach Karen Aston leads a blend of new and familiar faces on the Women s Basketball staff. A 2002 inductee into the UT Men s Athletics Hall of Fame, Travis Mays ( ) returns to the Forty Acres to serve as associate head coach. Mays ranks No. 2 among the Longhorns career scoring leaders, having recorded 2,279 during his four-year playing career. Women s Basketball alums Amie Smith Bradley ( ) and Stacy Stephens ( ) bring additional Texas ties to the special assistant positions. The former Amie Smith was a four-year starter at the post position and is a member of the Texas 1,000-point Club. All-American Stephens helped the Longhorns to a berth in the 2003 NCAA Final Four and was a finalist for the State Farm Wade Trophy and Naismith Awards during her junior and senior seasons. New Faces to the Forty Acres Prior to the season, head coach Karen Aston announced the debut of several new additions to the Longhorn Women s Basketball family to round out her coaching staff. Jalie Mitchell and George Washington will serve as assistant coaches to Aston. Angela Ortega, armed with 20 years of coaching experience, will be responsible for all aspects of basketball operations. Shaun McPherson brings nearly a decade of experience to the sport performance aspect of the Longhorns training and was named assistant strength and conditioning coach. Horns Picked Fifth in Big 12 Preseason Poll Texas was picked to finish fifth in the Big 12 Conference in a preseason vote of the league head coaches. What Returns for the Horns When broken down statistically, Texas returns 57.0 percent of its scoring and 53.0 percent of its rebounding from last season. Included in the breakdown are UT s leading scorer from last season (Chassidy Fussell) and it s second- and third-leading rebounders in Nneka Enemkpali and Fussell.
