If the MIAC Playoffs started this weekend, the Gusties would be on the outside looking in, sitting in a tie for sixth place ( with Saint John s) in the conference standings with eight points at in the MIAC and overall. The Cobbers are currently in a three-way tie for second place alongside St. Olaf and Bethel with 10 points. Concordia is in conference play and overall. The Gusties, who are coming off a bye week, will have the luxury of playing in the confines of Don Roberts Ice Rink after scrapping by with a split against Saint John s on Jan Although the Cobbers have been fortunate within league play, last weekend s sweep suffered at the hands of Saint John s somewhat humbled second place Concordia. In a race that is still anyone s game, both the Gusties and Coobbers look to regroup and bounce back heading into the final month of the regular season. Head Coach Brett Petersen is in his 12th season as the head coach of the Gustavus men s hockey team. Petersen entered the season with a record in his 11 seasons at Gustavus. He has been named MIAC Coach of the Year twice in his tenure, once in after helping the Gusties make the jump from ninth place the year before to a second place finish in the conference, and again in after leading the Gusties to their first MIAC Title since Petersen, a Roseville, Minn. native, received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Denver in 1992 and his Master of Science degree in athletic administration in 2000 from St. Cloud State. Petersen is assisted by Jared Phillips and Aaron Hoiland. Jared Phillips, a 2003 graduate of Gustavus, is in his third season as the full-time assistant coach with the men s hockey program. Phillips, a Bemidji, Minnesota native was a two-year letterwinner for the Gustie hockey team as a goaltender from 2001 to He completed his master s degree in applied kinesiology with an emphasis in sports management at the University of Minnesota in the summer of Jared also serves as the Athletic Department s Compliance Coordinator. Aaron Hoiland joins the Gustavus men s hockey program for his sixth season as a volunteer assistant coach. Originally from Anoka, Hoiland is a 1992 graduate of Forest Lake High School. After graduating from St. Thomas, Hoiland earned his Master of Arts degree in English from Stephen F. Austin State University in MEET THE CONCORDIA COACHING STAFF Hired in the spring of 2008, Chris Howe became the third men s hockey coach in the past 40 years of Concordia hockey. Before coming to Concordia, Howe spent the previous five seasons as the top assistant at Saint John s University. Before going to Saint John s, Howe served as a volunteer assistant coach for St. Cloud State University under head coach Craig Dahl. A native of St. Cloud, Minn., Howe received his bachelor s degree in social studies and secondary education from St. John s University in Coach Howe is assisted by Ross Richards and Nate Weossner. ABOUT CONCORDIA... The Concordia men s hockey team looks to bounce back from a sweep suffered at the hands of Saint John s last weekend in St. Cloud. The Cobbers were beaten by scores of 2-1 and 4-1, respectively, on Saturday and Sunday, Jan The Cobbers scored two goals on 47 shots over the weekend, as Kelly

Defenseman Erick Galt, forward Ben Payne, and forward Nick Thielen have shared the majority of the scoring responsibilities this season, combining for 32 points on the year. Galt (3G, 8A) and Payne (3G, 8A) lead the way with 11 points each, while Thielen has scored 10 points (3G, 7A). Forward Aaron Wheeler is the team s top goal-scorer with six goals and three assists for nine points. Splitting time in nets has been Kelly Andrew and Chris Neamonitis. Andrew is and carries a.929 save percentage with a 2.25 goals against average. Neamonitis has a goals against average 2.35 and a save percentage of.920 with a record of The two goalies have split series in Concordia s last two MIAC matchups. Despite Concordia being ranked second in the league, goals have not come easy for the Cobbers this season. Concordia ranks last in the MIAC in offense, scoring a total of 34 goals for an average of 1.79 per game. Defensively, the Cobbers rank fourth in the league, allowing 2.42 goals per game. AROUND THE GLOBE...The Gustavus Adolphus men s hockey team features 22 players who previously played junior hockey on 14 different teams. Coach Brett Petersen s squad features players from six states; Minnesota (19), California (2), Texas (1), New Hampshire (1), Nevada (1), Oklahoma (1), and three countries outside the U.S. in Canada, Norway, and Sweden. LAST TIME OUT... Although the Gusties managed to earn a split against Saint John s in their last time on the ice Jan , Coach Petersen may want to have a short term memory about how his squad played the majority of periods played throughout the weekend. The Gusties were able to score four unanswered goals in a come-from-behind 4-3 victory on Friday night to snap an eight-game losing streak at the National Hockey Center. On Saturday in St. Peter, Gustavus was not fortunate enough to be able to battle back from a three-goal deficit following another slow start, falling 4-3 to allow Saint John s the split. THE SERIES... This weekend s games will be the 106th and 107th meetings between Gustavus and Concordia in men s hockey. The Gusties hold the advantage in the all-time series with a mark of Gustavus fell to Concordia by the score of 3-2 earlier this season at the MIAC Showcase. After Gustavus took a 1-0 lead in the first period, Concordia scored three unanswered goals in the second and third periods to go up 3-1 and hold on late for a one-goal victory. The two squads split the regular season series last year in Moorhead. Concordia cruised to a 9-1 victory on Friday night, yet the Gusties bounced back with a 3-1 win on Saturday. As part of Gustavus Adolphus College s 150th anniversary celebration, the Gustavus men s hockey team will host its annual alumni game on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Following Saturday afternoon s game, all alumni, family, and friends of the Gustavus men s hockey program are welcome to take part in a Sesquicentennial Celebration of Gustavus hockey in the Heritage Room located in the Jackson Campus. Cost is $6.00 per person and includes h orderves, cash bar, and program. POLL POSITION...The Gustavus men s hockey team dropped out of the top-15 according to the most recent USCHO.com Division III Men s Poll this week. The Gusties were ranked as high as No. 15 on both the Jan. 9 and Jan. 16 polls. St. Thomas is the only ranked team in the MIAC, coming into this weekend ranked No. 9. GET AHEAD, STAY AHEAD... The Gustavus men s hockey team is an impressive when leading after the second period. When leading after the first period, the Gusties are On the other end of the spectrum, Gustavus is when trailing after one and when behind after two. SOLID O, SOLID D...The Gustavus men s hockey team boasts the second ranked offense and defense in the conference. The Gusties are scoring 3.12 goals per game and allowing 2.24 goals per game. Within conference play, Gustavus ranks second in scoring (3.38 gpg) and third in defense (2.38 gpg). BAD MEMORIES IN ST. PETER... Recent history is not on the side of the Cobbers as they roll into St. Peter this weekend. Concordia is winless in their last eight trips to the Minnesota River Valley, going within that time.
