The Gustavus men s hockey team is led by seniors Tim Donohue (Bloomington, Minn.), Jake Bushey (Duluth, Minn.) and junior Evan Erickson (Woodbury, Minn.). Donhue wears the C on his Gustie sweater, while Bushey and Erickson wear the A. In the 76-year history of Gustavus men s hockey, Donohue is the 90th student-athlete to earn the right of wearing a C on his Gustavus sweater. LAND OF 10,000 LAKES This season s roster includes 29 student-athletes, 22 of which hail from Minnesota. The three players not from in-state include Mason Etter (Fy., Grafton, Wis.), Caleb Anderson (Fy., Sioux Falls, S.D.), Reid Brown (So, Superior, Colo.), JT Walters (Sr., Escondido, Calif), Van Sullivan (Jr., Brentwood, Tenn.), Russell Barone (So., Mohena, Ill.), and Axel Hallin (So., Hovas, Sweden.). LAST TIME OUT The Gusties split two non-conference games last weekend at Don Roberts Ice Rink, defeating the University of Wisconsin-Superior 3-1 prior to a 5-3 loss against the University of Wisconsin-Stout. On Friday, Gustvaus scored an even strength, power play, and shorthanded goal while Robbie Goor (Fy., Anoka, Minn.) earned his first collegiate win in net, making 26 saves in a 3-1 win over UW-Superior. The Black and Gold faltered in the third period against UW-Stout, giving up two in the third in the 5-3 loss. Caleb Anderson tallied his second consecutive shorthanded goal after scoring his first collegiate tally against UW-Superior. FIRST-YEARS FEATURED The Gustavus freshman class continued to make a difference in non-conference games against UW-Superior and UW-Stout. Anderson picked up his first two collegiate goals, both shorthanded, Goor notched his first collegiate win in goal, while Patrick Gazich (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Mason Etter tallied their first collegiate points with assists on Saturday. GUSTAVUS NOTABLES - Caleb Anderson leads the team in scoring with five points off two goals and three assists and is tied for the scoring lead among freshman in the conference. - Anderson is tied for the lead in Division III with two shorthanded goals. The Gusties scored one shorthanded goal all of last season. - In two games played, Robbie Goor ranks atop of the MIAC with a 0.94 goals against average and a.956 save percentage different Gusties have found their way into the goal-scoring column through the first six games this season.

The Gusties closed out the season against Hamline, winning 3-1 in St. Paul prior to a 4-4 draw and shootout win during senior night at Don Roberts Ice Rink. Isaak Tjaden picked up his first collegiate victory in net after making a career-high 37 saves as the Gusties defeated Hamline 3-1 Friday, Feb. 17. Mike Fabie gave the Gusties an early 1-0 lead at the 9:31 mark in the first period with his first goal of the season in just his second game played. With 2:10 remaining in the opening frame, Russell Barone found the back of the net for the third time this season, assisted by Joe Lindberg and Kegan Couture, and the Gusties led 2-0 at the first intermission. Hamline ended the shutout at the 2:10 mark of the second period on a goal by Cody Bentzel and the score remained 2-1 after the first 40 minutes of play. The Pipers fired 21 shots on goal in the second frame, but Tjaden was up to the challenge with 20 saves. Tim Donohue added an insurance goal on a power play 5:15 into the third period, his fifth of the season, assisted by Nick Sheak, and the Gusties skated away with the two-goal victory. Regulation wasn t enough time to finish the season at Don Roberts Ice Rink and neither was overtime as the Gusties concluded its season with a thrilling eight-round shootout victory over Hamline Saturday, Feb. 18 on Senior Night. Hamline erased a two-goal deficit in the third period to tie the game 4-4, and neither team scored in the overtime, but the Gusties would have the last laugh as Erik Johnson ended his career by denying six shots in the shootout, skating off the ice a winner for the final time. It didn t take long for the Gusties to light the lamp as Jake McCann scored his second goal of the season 3:03 into the game. With just under four minutes remaining in the period, Hamline tied the score and the teams went into the first intermission tied 1-1. The Pipers took advantage of a power play with a goal at the 7:55 mark in the second period, but the Gusties responded with a power play of their own at the 11:27 mark. Colin Hernon benefited from a patient pass by Joe Lindberg to tie the game 2-2. Less than a minute later, Colton Schmidt found the back of the net to put the Gusties up 3-2. And with 3:59 left in the frame, Hernon scored his second goal of the game and seventh of the season, and the Gusties carried a 4-2 lead into the third period. Hamline was able to make it a one-goal game with a score 1:59 into the third and tied the score with three minutes remaining in regulation. After a scoreless overtime period, the two teams were destined for a shootout. Hamline struck first, but the Gusties made their next two off the sticks of Jake Bushey and McCann. Forced to their final opportunity, the Pipers responded with a make, which was followed by four rounds of misses by each team. Schmidt then put a puck past John Sellie-Hanson and the ensuing try by Hamline was denied by Johnson, giving the Gusties the shootout victory.

In his 17-year tenure behind the Gustavus bench, Petersen has compiled a overall record. His 217 wins at Gustavus rank second behind legendary coach Don Roberts. He has been named MIAC Coach of the Year twice, once in after helping the Gusties make the jump from ninth place the year before to a second place finish in the conference, and again in after leading the Gusties to their first MIAC title since While at Gustavus, Petersen has worked with 18 All-Conference players, three MIAC Player of the Year recipients, eight AHCA All-Americans and one National Player of the Year (David Martinson, 2010). Petersen, a Roseville, Minnesota native, started his coaching career with the St. Paul Vulcans of the United States Hockey League (USHL) from He was named assistant coach at St. Cloud State University of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) in the spring of During his six years at St. Cloud State, he coordinated the recruiting process for head coach Craig Dahl, while also being closely involved with practice planning, player development and bench coaching. In the classroom, Petersen received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Denver in 1992 and his Master of Science degree in athletic administration in 2000 from St. Cloud State. He was a four-year letter winner in hockey while at Denver and was named to the WCHA All-Academic team for three years. Petersen served as the team s assistant captain during his junior and senior seasons. Petersen had the opportunity to represent USA Hockey on several difference occasions during his playing career including the U.S. Olympic Festival in Oklahoma City in 1990 and the World University Games in Sapporo, Japan in He was drafted by the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League (NHL), but did not play professional hockey. Along with his coaching duties at Gustavus, Petersen s responsibilities include managing Lund Arena, the College s multi-purpose facility that houses the ice sheet from October through March for team practices and games. The facility is then used for physical education classes, concerts and conventions the rest of the year. Brett lives in St. Peter with his wife, Linda, and their daughters, Katherine and Natalie.
