The Gustavus men s hockey team will be in unfamiliar territory this weekend as it takes on the College of St. Scholastica and UW-Superior in a pair of non-conference home challenges. Unfamiliar territory because the Gusties have played on Don Roberts Ice Rink just three times this season. They are returning to their home ice for the first time since early December. The Black and Gold are riding high after December and look to keep the momentum going into 2012 this weekend. Game Notes... In the first non-conference bout slated to take place this weekend in St. Peter, the Gusties will take on the College of St. Scholastica Friday at 7:05 p.m. St. Scholastica enters the weekend with an overall record of and a NCHA mark of On Saturday night, Gustavus will cap the weekend against UW-Superior at 7:05 p.m. The Yellow Jackets are coming off a sweep over Finlandia and are overall and in the NCHA. MEET THE GUSTAVUS COACHING STAFF... Head Coach Brett Petersen is in his 12th season as the head coach of the Gustavus men s hockey team. He has been named MIAC Coach of the Year twice in his tenure, once in after helping the Gusties make the jump from ninth place the year before to a second place finish in the conference, and again in after leading the Gusties to their first MIAC Title since Petersen, a Roseville, Minn. native, received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Denver in 1992 and his Master of Science degree in athletic administration in 2000 from St. Cloud State. Petersen is assisted by Jared Phillips and Aaron Hoiland. Jared Phillips, a 2003 graduate of Gustavus, is in his third season as the full-time assistant coach with the men s hockey program. Phillips, a Bemidji, Minnesota native was a two-year letterwinner for the Gustie hockey team as a goaltender from 2001 to He completed his master s degree in applied kinesiology with an emphasis in sports management at the University of Minnesota in the summer of Jared also serves as the Athletic Department s Compliance Coordinator. Aaron Hoiland joins the Gustavus men s hockey program for his sixth season as a volunteer assistant coach. Originally from Anoka, Hoiland is a 1992 graduate of Forest Lake High School. After graduating from St. Thomas, Hoiland earned his Master of Arts degree in English from Stephen F. Austin State University in MEET THE ST. SCHOLASTICA COACHING STAFF...St. Scholastica is coached by Mark Wick who is in his eighth season behind the bench for the Saints. Wick is a Hermantown, Minn. native and a 1985 graduate of St. Scholastica. He later went on to earn a Masters of Education degree from Bowling Green State University in Wick served coaching stints at Augsburg and UW-Superior before accepting the head job at his alma mater in Coach Wick has accumulated a record in seven seasons at the head of the Saint hockey program. St. Scholastica assistant coaches include Tyson Terry (SUNY- Geneseo `07), Brant Nicklin (UM-Duluth `00), and Mike Sertich (UM-Duluth `69). MEET THE UW-SUPERIOR COACHING STAFF...Dan Stauber is in his 12th season at the head of the UW-Superior men s hockey program. Stauber s coaching career began at UW-Eau Claire. From there, he spent three seasons at Waupaca High School and then three more at his alma mater, Duluth Denfeld High School. He joined the Yellow Jacket staff as an assistant coach in Stauber, a 1998 graduate of UW-Superior, carried a career record of into the season. Stauber is assisted by Rodney Graham (UW-Superior `97) and student assistant Evan Freidlieb. SCOUTING THE SAINTS... Saint Scholastica was last in action on Dec in a road series against St. Norbert. The Saints were able to come away with a split against the Green Knights, winning 3-2 on Friday night yet suffering a 6-3 loss on Saturday. Brett Corcoran led the way in the series with three points (2G, 1A), while Jere Dawes scored a goal on both nights. The Saints have been able to put the puck in the net from the start of the season, averaging 4.08 goals per game entering the weekend. On defense, St. Scholastica is allowing 3.17 goals per game. The Saints bread-and-butter has been their specials teams,

The Saint power play is currently ranked second in the nation. Junior forward Brett Corcoran leads the team in scoring with 20 points on 11 goals and nine assists. Five of his goals have come on the power play, ranking second in the nation. Senior forward Jeremy Dawes has 16 points (7G, 9A), while junior forward Tyler Miller leads the team with 12 assists and a plus/ minus of +4. Sophomore Colin Rundell has done the majority of goaltending this season, entering the weekend at with a goals against average of 3.18 and a save percentage of.899. SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS... The Yellow Jackets take the ice for the first time since sweeping Finlandia by scores of 4-3 and 3-1 on Dec. 9 and 10. UW-Superior will be in Minneapolis on Friday night to take on Augsburg before heading to St. Peter on Saturday. UW-Superior averages 3.46 goals per game and is hitting at a 16.7-percent rate on the power play. On defense, the Yellow Jackets are allowing 2.62 goals per game and have killed 73.5-percent of penalties. Doing the majority of scoring has been sophomore forward Pat Dalbec. Dalbec is the only player in double-figures with 10 goals and seven assists for 17 points. Five of his goals have come on the power play. Sophomore goaltender Drew Strandberg enters the weekend with a record of in 603:28 minutes in nets. Strandberg carries a goals against average 2.09 and a save percentage of.903 into this weekend. AROUND THE GLOBE...The Gustavus Adolphus men s hockey team features 23 players who previously played junior hockey on 15 different teams. Coach Brett Petersen s squad features players from seven states; Minnesota (18), California (2), Texas (1), New Hampshire (1), Nevada (1), Oklahoma (1), Massachusetts (1) and three countries outside the U.S. in Canada, Norway, and Sweden. DECEMBER TO REMEMBER...As they have made a habit of doing, the Gustavus men s hockey team finished the calendar year strong with a 2-1 victory over No. 4 UW-River Falls on Dec. 14. After going in November, Gustavus turned things around to go in December. In the past 10 seasons, the Gusties have compiled a record of 32-8 in December for a winning percentage of.800. BORDER BATTLE... The Gustie men s hockey team will face a school from neighboring Wisconsin for the sixth time this season on Saturday against UW-Superior. The Gusties are currently against non-conference Wisconsin natives. In the past five seasons, Gustavus is against schools based in the Badger State. MCLEAN RIDING HIGH...Gustavus rookie goaltender John McLean was named Gustavus Student-Athlete of the Month for his outstanding play in December. On the season, McLean ranks second in both save percentage (.932) which also ranks sixth in all of Division III and winning percentage (.667) in the MIAC. The freshman netminder enters this weekend at overall. ROAD WARRIORS... The Gustavus men s hockey team is at home for the first time since Dec. 2, 2011 this weekend. The Gusties have survived a grueling road schedule and are now away from St. Peter. Coach Petersen s squad has already logged more than 2,400 miles on the road, the equivalent of driving to New York City and back. KILL OR BE KILLED...The Gustavus penalty kill has been one of the hottest in the NCAA as of late. Dating back to the opening contest of the Augsburg series on Friday, Dec. 2, the Gustie penalty killers have shut down their opponents on their last 21 power play chances. Gustavus has killed 51-of-60 penalties for a penalty kill percentage of.850 this season. TOP LINE...The Ringo Line of Ross Ring-Jarvi (13 pts), Zach May (13 pts) and Andy Pearson (12 pts) has accounted for 36.5-percent of Gustavus total point production this season. Both May and Pearson enter this weekend in the midst of a three-game pointstreak. May has scored five points (2G, 3A) within that time and Pearson has scored four points (4A). Pearson is currently tied for the league-lead in freshman scoring alongside Saint John s John Haeg. ROLL OUT THE WELCOME MAT...Gustavus welcomes a pair of new sophomores to the roster in Cory Belisle, an Anoka, Minn. native is a transfer from Hamline, and Alex Gallen, a Hingham, Mass. native is a transfer from Mercyhurst. Belisle is a 5-10, 185-pound forward, while Gallen is a 5-10, 190-pound defenseman. GET AHEAD STAY AHEAD...So far this season, when the Gusties take a lead, they have held on to it.
