RIVALRY RENEWED The Friars (6-4-1, 13 points) and River Hawks (5-3-1, 11 points) enter the weekend separated by two points in the League standings, with Providence in third place and UMass Lowell in fifth. Head coaches Nate Leaman (PC) and Norm Bazin (UML) both began coaching their respective teams prior to the season and will meet for the 11th time in that span on Friday night (UMass Lowell leads 6-4-0). The teams are meeting for the first time since the River Hawks knocked the Friars out of the 2013 Hockey East Championship with a 2-1 win in a semifinal game at the TD Garden (March 22, 2013). It was the second consecutive year the Friars and River Hawks met in Hockey East Championship play, with Providence posting a two-games to one quarterfinal series win over UMass Lowell in Providence and UMass Lowell also played a de facto title series to end the 2013 regular season, with the River Hawks claiming the Hockey East crown by defeating the Friars on the final night of the season (4-1 on March 9, 2013). TALKING POINTS The Friars are coming off weekend at Colorado College (Jan. 17-8) that concluded with a 7-2 win over the Tigers. Led by Noel Acciari s goal and two assists, seven different Friars scored in the win as Providence posted its highest goal total since a 10-4 home win over AIC (Oct. 19). The Friars are at home this season, including in home league games. Defensive battle: at 2.09 goals against per game, Providence s defense ranks sixth nationally, while UMass Lowell has the top-ranked defense (1.85). The Friars carry the eighth-best winning percentage in the country (.688). Providence s 33 third-period goals this season are the second-most in the country, trailing only Boston College s 39. Sophomore goalie Jon Gillies was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week following his record at Colorado College (Jan. 20). On the season, Gillies has a 2.00 goals against average (ranks 10th nationally), a.936 save percentage (third) and three shutouts (tied for third). Providence s six short-handed goals this season ranks tied for third in the NCAA. Junior forward Ross Mauermann leads the Friars with 29 points ( ). Mauermann is the first Friar to reach 29 points in a season since Jon Rheault notched 31 in

The 33 third period goals are the 2nd most in the NCAA. PC Men s Noel Acciari is tied for the national lead with three shorthanded goals this season. Two of his three SHG proved to be game winners. Last season, UMass Lowell posted a 2-1 Hockey East semifinal win over the Friars in the teams first ever semifinal meeting. In 2011, the Friars won a quarterfinal series versus the River Hawks at the Tsongas Center, two-games to one, to become the first ever No. 7 seed to advance to the Hockey East Championship semifinals. In the Jan. 17 meeting of last season, Jon Gillies made a career-high 48 saves (L, 2-1). The Friars and River Hawks played 10 times under head coaches Nate Leaman and Norm Bazin, who each began coaching their respective Hockey East teams prior to the season. UMass Lowell leads the series over that 10-game span. SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS UMass Lowell is (5-3-1 HEA) on the season and is also in its last two games. In a pair of home games last weekend, the River Hawks most recently tied Maine (1-1 on Jan. 17) and defeated Boston University (3-1 on Jan. 18). The River Hawks are over their last seven games since returning from break. Senior Joseph Pendenza leads the team in goals and points (9-8-17), while junior Zack Kamrass has a team-high 12 assists. In net, sophomore Connor Hellebuyck and senior Doug Carr have split time in net. Hellebuyck is with a 1.62 GAA and a.946 save percentage, while Carr is with a 1.88 GAA and a.930 save percentage. LAST MEETING BEFORE THIS SEASON: 2012 HOCKEY EAST SEMIFINAL Making their second consecutive appearance at the Hockey East Semifinals, the fourth-seeded Friars run in the Hockey East playoffs ended with a 2-1 loss to top-seeded UMass Lowell at the TD Garden in Boston, Mass. Providence held onto a 1-0 lead for the majority of the game after taking the lead at 8:59 of the first period when freshman Kevin Rooney scored his first goal as a Friar. UMass Lowell responded in the third period with A.J. White tying the game 34 seconds into the final period and Scott Wilson netting the game winner at 12:30 of the frame. LAST TIME OUT: FRIARS POST 7-2 WIN AT CC COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Friars used a five-goal second period to pull away from Colorado College en route to a 7-2 win at the World Arena (7,276) on Saturday night (Jan. 18). Noel Acciari led the offense with a goal and two assists as seven different Friars scored goals. Brandon Tanev also had a multi-point night with a goal and an assist and Shane Luke scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal. In net, Jon Gillies finished with 28 saves for the Friars, while Josh Thorimbert made 10 saves and Courtney Lockwood made seven stops for the Tigers. GILLIES NAME HEA DEFENSIVE POTW Sophomore goaltender Jon Gillies picked up his second Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season it was announced by the conference on Monday afternoon (Jan. 20). Gillies went in a pair of weekend road games at Colorado College (Jan ), helping the Friars to a 2-2 tie on Friday night and a 7-2 win over the Tigers on Saturday night. In game one, Gillies made 27 saves, including three in overtime to preserve the tie. In the two games, Gillies stopped 55 of the 59 shots he faced, posted a 1.93 goals against average and a.932 save percentage. It marked Gillies second Defensive Player of the Week honor this season, having also won the award on Oct. 14. A NEW SCHNEIDER ARENA CLOSE CALLS The Friars have played 24 games this season, with 14 of those decided by one goal or ending in a tie. Providence is in eight overtime games this season. Three of Providence s last five games have reached overtime (0-1-2 in those three OT games). Of the Friars five losses this season, only one has come by more than one goal (5-2 at Boston College on Jan. 10). THIRD PERIOD POWER SURGES The Friars have out-scored opponents in the third period this season, good for a +14 goal differential. Providence s 33 third-period goals are the second most in the nation, trailing only Boston College s 39. On Dec. 6, the Friars scored three third period goals to erase a 3-0 deficit and tie Northeastern 3-3. SPREADING THE WEALTH The Friars are largely a scoring by committee team with points coming throughout the lineup. In Providence s 7-2 win at Colorado College (Jan. 18), seven different players scored for the Friars. Nine Friars have notched at least 11-points. 20 players have scored a goal this season for Providence, while 24 have at least one point. SHORTHANDED OFFENSE Kevin Rooney and Noel Acciari scored shorthanded goals 39 seconds apart early in the third period to help lift PC to a 4-1 win at Army (Dec. 20). The Friars have scored six shorthanded goals this season, tied for the third-most in the On Friday, Sept. 27 Providence College unveiled a renovated Schneider Arena at a Grand Reopening Ceremony. A ribbon cutting ceremony and a blessing of the building took place. The project took just under eight months to complete. The renovation and 30,000 square-foot addition included a new atrium, ticket office, concession stands, coaches offices, shooting room, locker rooms, meeting rooms, athletic training room, press box, five luxury suites, dasher boards, glass, video board, video ribbon boards, scoreboards, a renovated Friends of Friar Room and a strength and conditioning facility.

Acciari is tied for the national lead with three short-handed tallies this season and two of his three shorthanded goals have proved to be game winners. Ross Mauermann and Steven Shamanski also have shorthanded goals this season. MIGHTY MAUERMANN A three-time Hockey East Player of the Week this season, junior Ross Mauermann leads the Friars in points with a team-high 14 goals and a team-high 15 assists for 29 points. He is the first Friar to reach 29 points in a season since when Jon Rheault notched 31. Mauermann has seven multi-point games this season. It took Mauermann 11 games to score 10 goals, the fastest a Friar has reached 10 goals since the season when Peter Fregoe scored 10 goals in Providence s first eight games. Mauermann has now notched at least 24 points in his first three seasons, the first Friar to do so since the and seasons (Peter Fregoe 03 and Jon DiSalvatore 03). Mauermann led the Friars in scoring in each of his first two seasons, becoming the 16th Friar to lead the team in scoring in back-to-back years. Ron Wilson 77 was the last Friar to lead the team in scoring in three consecutive seasons (Wilson led the Friars in scoring in all four of his seasons from to ). FRIAR IRON MEN Seniors Derek Army and Steven Shamanski and junior Ross Mauermann have all put together extensive consecutive games played streaks. Army has played in all 134 games of his Friar career. Dating back to his freshman season, Shamanski has played in 116 straight games. In Providence s 7-2 win at Colorado College (Jan. 19), Mauermann played in his 100th consecutive game - having played every game since arriving on campus. The Providence College record for consecutive games played is held by Tony Zancanaro 07, who played in all 146 games of his Friar career. HOBEY FAN BALLOT Ross Mauermann and Jon Gillies have been nominated for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Phase I Fan Balloting. Fan balloting is open and fans can vote once daily at UNI WATCH The Friars debuted throwback uniforms against Merrimack at Frozen Fenway (Jan. 4). The uniforms are replicas of those worn by the Providence College team. It is the 50th anniversary of that team, which won the ECAC title and made it to the Frozen Four - marking Providence s first conference title and appearance in the NCAAs. Defenseman Larry Kish 64 was named the program s first All-American that season. TEAM USA DUTY: GILLIES IN THE WJC Jon Gillies was the starting goaltender for the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team which competed in Malmo, Sweden (Dec Jan. 2). Gillies got the start for Team USA in its opening game against Czech Republic and made 23 saves in the 5-1 win (Dec. 26) and followed with 27 saves in the USA s 6-3 win over Slovakia (Dec. 28). Gillies made 21 stops in a 3-2 loss to Canada (Dec. 31). Gillies then made 20 saves as the U.S. fell 5-3 in the quarterfinals to Russia (Jan. 2). Gillies served as the primary backup for Team USA at the 2013 World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia and became the first Friar to take home a medal in the prestigious tournament as the U.S. won gold. Last season, Gillies became the 11th Friar to take part in the World Junior Championships and the first since Bobby Goepfert (2003). Shaun Kane 92 is the only other Friar to have taken part in two Junior World Championships (1989 & 1990). REWRITING THE RECORD BOOK On Nov. 16 at Vermont, sophomore Jon Gillies made 23 saves to post his school record-eighth shutout as a Friar, surpassing Tyler Sims 08 (7). Gillies recorded his eighth shutout in his 45th career start. Sims ( ) posted his seventh shutout in his 94th career game. Four of Gillies eight career shutouts have come on the road. With three shutouts this season, Gillies is tied for third in the nation. As a freshman, Gillies set the Providence College single season record with five shutouts. Gillies 2.05 career GAA currently ranks first in the Providence record book. Prior to this season, the last time the Friars reached the top-five in the national rankings was when they were ranked No. 5 in the USA Today/American Hockey magazine preseason poll on Oct. 1, With the Oct. 25 win over Miami, Providence defeated a top-10 team while also ranked inside the top-10 for the first time since posting a 5-3 win over Boston College on Feb. 9, Prior to this season, the Friars last reached the top-10 in the national polls in the first week of February, 2006, when they were ranked ninth in both national polls. UNDERCLASSMEN NUMBERS Last season, the Friar roster featured the thirdmost freshmen in the country. This season, Providence carries the second-most underclassmen (freshmen and sophomores) in the nation with 20 (list complied by College Hockey Inc.): Penn State Army Providence Northeastern & Quinnipiac THE MAYOR S CUP On Saturday, November 30, 2013 Providence defeated cross-town rival Brown University, 3-2, to claim the 28th Annual Mayor s Cup. Senior Derek Army s goal at 9:17 of the third period proved to be the game-winner. Sophomore Nick Saracino scored the first goal of the game 17 minutes into the first period. It was the second year in a row the Friars claimed the Mayor s Cup. Providence now holds a all-time mark in the Mayor s Cup. SHAMANSKI A SENIOR CLASS FINALIST Senior defenseman Steven Shamanski has been named one of 20 finalists for the 2014 men s hockey Senior Class Award (Nov. 7). To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence community, classroom, character and competition. From the list of 20 candidates, a national media committee will select ten finalists in February. Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient of the award. FIRST HALF WIN TOTALS The Friars finished the first half of the season with a record, marking the first time they have reached 13 wins in the first half of a season (Oct.-Dec. 31) since when they posted 13 wins before the new year. TEN SPOT The Friars posted a 10-4 win against AIC at Schneider Arena on Oct. 19. Providence scored 10 goals for the first time since Oct. 12, 2002 (an 11-0 home win over Iona). LEAHY JOINS SQUAD Freshman goaltender Brendan Leahy (Reading, Mass.) has joined the Friars for the second semester. Leahy played for the PAL Jr. Islanders (USPHL) during the fall, playing in 13 games and posting a 3.04 goals against average and a.910 save percentage. Leahy also had stints in the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL) with the Boston Jr. Bruins and the Valley Jr. Warriors as well as with Waterloo of the United States Hockey League (USHL). HOCKEY BROS Nick Saracino s older brother, Chris, is playing for the Reading Royals of the ECHL (with former Friar Ian O Connor). Chris played four seasons at RIT ( ). Kevin Hart s younger brother, Brian, is a sophomore forward at Harvard (ECAC). Brandon Tanev s older brother, Chris, is a defenseman for the Vancouver Canucks (NHL). FRIAR FAMILY TIES Providence College senior Derek Army is the son of former Friar hockey player and coach Tim Army 85 and sophomore forward Kevin Rooney is the nephew of former Friar Steve Rooney 85. Former PC standout and current assistant coach of the Colorado Avalanche, Tim Army, ranks sixth all-time in points (179) at Providence. He earned All-America honors as he helped the Friars capture the 1985 Hockey East Tournament title and guided the team to the NCAA Championship game. Steve Rooney scored the game-winning goal as the Friars defeated Boston College, 2-1, in double overtime in the inaugural Hockey East championship game in Steve went on to play in the NHL for the Montreal Canadiens team that claimed the 1986 Stanley Cup title. (Steve is the father of 2013 PC graduate Chris Rooney). FOLLOWING IN FATHER S FOOTSTEPS Two sets of Providence College father-son combinations have played in at least 100 games, including senior Derek Army and his father, Tim Army 85. Tim is the Providence College all-time leader in career games played (151). The other father-son combination to each play at least 100 games is Randy Velischek 83 (130) and Alex Velischek 13 (113) NHL DRAFT: FLORENTINO & GILMOUR On Sunday, June 30, freshman defenseman Anthony Florentino was selected in the fifth round (143rd overall) in the 2013 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft, which was held at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Two rounds later, sophomore John Gilmour was selected 198th overall by the Calgary Flames. Florentino and Gilmour were the 96th and 97th Friars selected in the NHL Draft. Florentino was the sixth Friar drafted by the Sabres, joining Friar great Gates Orlando (164th overall in 1981) and rising senior defenseman Mark Adams (134th overall in 2009). Gilmour was the fifth Friar drafted by Calgary and he joins classmates Mark Jankowski and Jon Gillies as Flames draftees. Gilmour was the first Providence College player drafted after playing a season with the Friars since Jon Rheault and Cody Wild were selected in the 2006 draft.

7 FRIARS.COM HEAD COACH 7 Nate Leaman THIRD SEASON Nate Leaman is in his third season as head coach of the Providence College men's hockey program. In two seasons at helm, Leaman has transformed the program, including back-to-back Hockey East Championship semifinal appearances by the Friars. Last season, Leaman led the Friars to a overall record and a mark in Hockey East play. It marked the most wins for a Friar squad since the season. The 13 Hockey East wins tied for the third-most in program history. The Friars entered the last weekend of the regular season in contention for the league title for the first time ever and went on to win a home quarterfinal Hockey East playoff series for the first time since The Friars then made a second consecutive Hockey East semifinal appearance, marking the first time in 17 seasons that Providence has made at least the Hockey East semifinal in consecutive seasons ( & ). In , Leaman coached Providence College's first All-American since 2004 in freshman goaltender Jon Gillies, who was named a Second Team All-American. Gillies was also named the Hockey Commissioner's Association (HCA) National Rookie of the Year, a First Team Hockey East All-Star and the Hockey East Rookie of the Year. He was just the third freshman all-time to earn First Team Hockey East honors. In addition to Gillies, senior Kyle Murphy was named the 2013 Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award Winner by the HCA, Tim Schaller became just the second Friar to earn Hockey East Defensive Forward of the Year honors and six Friars were named to the 2013 Hockey East All-Academic Team. The Friars were able to move into the polls on the strength of several marquee wins, including their first win at New Hampshire since 2004 and their first win at Boston College in their last 18 tries. Leaman and his team are very involved in the community and last season the Friars added Kevin Rich to their squad as part of Team IMPACT, a non-profit chartered to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses. Leaman received the Reverend John McMahon Award from the Providence College Student Congress in April of Recognizing members of the PC community for outstanding dedication and service to the student body, it is the highest honor that Student Congress awards. In his first season at Providence ( ), Leaman led the Friars to the Hockey East Semifinals for the first time since Providence defeated No. 2 seed UMass Lowell in a best-of-three quarterfinal series to become the first No. 7 seed to ever win a Hockey East Quarterfinal series in the history of the league. Leaman, who was appointed the 12th coach at Providence on April 22, 2011, guided Providence to 14 victories during the season. Among those wins was a two-game weekend sweep of then No. 1 nationally ranked Merrimack on December 3-4. The 2-1 overtime triumph on December 2 was PC's first over a No. 1 team since After their successful weekend against Merrimack, the Friars were ranked in the USCHO. com national poll for the first time since In all, Providence recorded seven wins against nationally ranked teams, including five victories against squads in the top-10. In addition, Leaman coached Ross Mauermann, who was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. Mauermann became the first Friar to earn the honor since Prior to Providence, Leaman spent eight seasons as the head coach at Union College. Leaman's Union squad posted an impressive overall record, including a mark in the ECAC. The 26 overall wins and the 17 league triumphs are school records. The team captured the College's first Cleary Cup (ECAC regular season champion) and earned its first NCAA Division I Tournament berth. Union's season came to end when it was defeated by eventual national champion Minnesota-Duluth, 2-0, in the 2011 NCAA East Regional Semifinal. The Dutchmen went in their final 16 regular season games to clinch the league title. Union had the top power play in the nation as it posted a 29.5 percent success rate. In his career behind the bench, Leaman has coached 16 NHL draft picks, five All-Americans and one Hobey Baker finalist.
