It will mark the final home game for seniors David Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.), John Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.), Greg Collins (Hingham, Mass.), Chris Eppich (Surrey, B.C.), Mark Fayne (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) and Ryan Simpson (Bow, N.H.). SERIES HISTORY VERSUS MERRIMACK In 106 meetings between the two teams, the Friars lead , including a mark in Providence. In the first meeting between the two teams this season, Merrimack posted a 2-1 overtime win on January 23 in North Andover, Mass. Last season, the Friars posted a record against the Warriors with the win (5-3) coming at Schneider Arena on January 31. SCOUTING MERRIMACK The Warriors come into this weekend looking to clinch a Hockey East playoff berth for the first time since Last weekend, Merrimack split a home series against Maine, winning on Friday (6-3) before being defeated on Saturday (5-1). In the 6-3 victory on Friday, the Warriors had 11 different players record a point including Bobby Kramer and Fraser Allan who each scored their first goals of the season. Freshman Stephane Da Costa leads the team in scoring with 42 points (15 goals, 27 assists), while Chris Barton is second with 34 points on 19 goals and 15 assists. Senior defenseman Mark Fayne (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) who has played in 137 career games, has missed just one game in his four years at Providence College. Providence goalie Alex Beaudry has made 39 saves in four different games this season, including at Merrimack on January 23. The Friars have posted a record at home this season, including three wins against ranked opponents. BEAUDRY REACHES SINGLE SEASON TOP-10 MARK Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.), who has 859 saves this season, ranks sixth all-time in PC s single season saves leaders. Beaudry has played in 29 games and is averaging 31.2 saves per game. FRIAR PENALTY KILL AMONG THE TOP 13 The Friars have thwarted 59 of their opponents last 67 power-play opportunities, including 21 of the last 22. The Friars had a streak in which they killed off 18 straight penalties, but the streak ended on January 19 at Northeastern. PC ranks 13th in the country on the penalty kill ( %). LAST TIME OUT Providence College played to a 2-2 overtime tie against UMass Lowell Saturday night at Schneider Arena. The Friars jumped to a 2-0 first period lead as they scored twice in a span of 29 seconds. Sophomore Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn) scored on the power play, while classmate Andy Balysky (Randolph, N.J.) added to the lead as he potted his second goal of the season. The River Hawks pulled to within 2-1 in the second period and scored the equalizer at 1:02 of the third period. UMass Lowell finished with a shot advantage, but the Friars had a 7-3 edge in overtime. Alex Beaudry finished with 31 saves for the Friars, while Carter Hutton stopped 24 shots for UML. SECOND PERIOD SUCCESS In the last 15 games in which the Friars have scored 26 goals, 15 have been scored in the second period. PC scored three times against Maine (1/16) in the second, including one on the power play. The night before, PC also scored three goals in the second stanza versus Boston University with two coming on the man advantage. On February 19, PC totaled three goals in the second period against BU. For the season, PC has scored 30 of its 67 goals in the second period. MacKINNON NOTCHES HAT TRICK Junior Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) recorded his first career hat trick against No. 19 Boston University on February 19. He finished with four points, which is a career high. It marked the first hat trick for a Friar since October 23 when sophomore Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) recorded three goals in a win at Bowling Green. The last time PC had two players notch hat tricks in the same season was during the season when Pete Zingoni and Devin Rask accomplished the feat.

3 STINGY DEFENSE Providence College ranks fourth in Hockey East in team defense, allowing 2.91 goals per game. PC also ranks second on the penalty kill (84.7 %) and is tied for fourth in goals allowed (93). BEAUDRY AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS Alex Beaudry comes into this weekend game ranked in the top-15 nationally with a.918 save percentage. In addition, he is second in Hockey East in save percentage and saves (859). FRIARS AGAINST NATIONALLY RANKED TEAMS PC is against ranked teams this season. The Friars have defeated then No. 7 Notre Dame (3-2), No. 17 Massachusetts (2-1), No. 3 UMass Lowell (4-2), No. 16 Maine (1/16) and No. 19 Boston University. Last season, PC finished with a record against ranked opponents. The one win came at No. 2 Boston University on January 13. FAYNE RACKING UP THE POINTS Mark Fayne has tallied a career-high 21 points (five goals, 16 assists) through 32 games this season. The 16 assists also are a career best, while the five goals matches a career high. Fayne also ranks tied for eighth among Hockey East defensemen with the 21 points. He has five multiple-point games, including a career-high four points (one goal, three assists) in a 4-2 win over No. 3 UMass Lowell on November 24. FRIARS IN CLOSE GAMES Six of PC s 10 wins this season have been one-goal contests. PC edged Holy Cross, 2-1, on 10/10 and Notre Dame, 3-2, on 10/15. PC also posted a 2-1 triumph at No. 17 Massachusetts on 10/31, defeated Brown, 4-3, on 11/17 and Maine, 3-2, on 1/16. Most recently, the Friars posted a 5-4 triumph over Boston University on 2/19. Last season, the Friars posted a 3-3 record in one-goal games. FRIARS AGAINST NON-CONFERENCE FOES Providence College posted a 5-2 record in non-conference games this season, including a 3-1 mark against teams from the CCHA. The 5-2 mark was the best non-conference record since the season when PC finished with a mark. The Friars outscored opponents, 22-15, in the seven non-conference contests this season. PC also defeated ECAC Hockey foe, Brown and Atlantic Hockey opponent, Holy Cross. Last season, the Friars posted a record in non-league action. FRIAR ALUMNI UPDATE Three Providence College alumni are currently playing in the NHL. Fernando Pisani 00 is playing for the Edmonton Oilers, while Hal Gill 97, who helped the Pittsburgh Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup title, is currently skating with the Montreal Canadiens. In addition, Jay Leach 01 is playing with the San Jose Sharks. Colin McDonald 07 was called up to play with the Edmonton Oilers earlier this season and scored his first NHL goal on November 28 against the Vancouver Canucks. In addition, there are two former Friars who played an integral part of the U.S.A. men s hockey team which captured the silver medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Brian Burke 77, who is the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, served as the general manager of Team U.S.A. Ron Wilson 77, the head coach of the Maple Leafs, was the head coach of Team U.S.A. Lou Lamoriello 63, former student-athlete, head coach and athletic director at PC, is the current President and General Manager of the New Jersey Devils. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fall on November 9. FAMILY TIES Providence College freshmen Chris Rooney (Canton, Mass.) and Alex Velischek (Kinnelon, N.J.) are sons of former Friar hockey greats. Rooney is the son of former Friar, Steve Rooney. Steve Rooney scored the game-winning goal as the Friars defeated Boston College, 2-1, in double overtime in the inaugural Hockey East championship game in Steve, who finished his collegiate career with 124 career points, went on to play in the NHL for the Montreal Canadiens team that claimed the 1986 Stanley Cup title. Alex is the son of former Friar Randy Velischek, who is one of the best defensemen to play at the College. He was named ECAC Player of the year in and earned All-America honors. Randy, who helped the Friars to the 1981 ECAC championship and two NCAA Tournament appearances (1981, 1983), played 10 seasons in the NHL (509 games). He played for Minnesota, New Jersey and Quebec. 7 TIM ARMY Head Coach Fifth Season Providence College, 1985 Chad Quenneville (second team and 1995) as well as NHL players Chris Therien, Hal Gill and Craig Darby. AT FRIAR HEAD COACH Tim Army is in his fifth season as head coach of the Providence College men s hockey team. Army became the 11th coach in the history of the program. He is the first PC alumnus to coach the team since his former coach Lou Lamoriello guided the Friars ( ). He also is the first former HOCKEY EAST player to be a head coach in the league. In his first season, Army led the team to a overall record, including a mark in HOCKEY EAST action. The 17 wins were the most by a Friar squad since In addition, the Friars, who were picked to finish eighth in the preseason coaches poll, recorded 14 conference victories and surprised many as they finished fifth in the league. The 14 HOCKEY EAST wins were one shy of tying a school record. In , Army guided the Friars to the HOCKEY EAST Tournament Quarterfinals. PC recorded wins over four ranked teams, including a 7-1 triumph over third-ranked UNH. Several individuals had strong seasons for the Friars, including Mark Fayne who was named to the HOCKEY EAST All-Rookie Team. During the campaign, the Friars recorded 14 wins and were ranked as high as 11th in the national polls. Among the 14 victories for the Friars were two triumphs at Boston College, which went on to claim the national title. The Friars also posted an impressive win over defending national champion and fifth-ranked Michigan State at the Great Lakes Invitational at the Joe Louis Arena. In all, the Friars had 10 wins against ranked teams. The Friars had a rebuilding season in , but recorded an impressive victory at then No. 2 Boston University, which went on to capture the 2009 NCAA title. PC also captured the Mayor s Cup trophy for the second consecutive season and third in the last four years. AHL EXPERIENCE Army spent three seasons as the head coach of the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League. He posted a mark in 240 games with the Pirates. In his second season at Portland ( ), Army guided the Pirates to a record of for 85 points as the team qualified for the Calder Cup Playoffs. Portland defeated the Providence Bruins in a first round series, marking the franchise s first playoff series victory in six years. That season, Army s team set numerous records, including highest penalty killing percentage (89.5 percent), fewest goals against in one season (160) and most shutouts in a season (17), which also tied the AHL mark. NHL EXPERIENCE Army spent nine seasons as an assistant coach in the NHL for two different teams. He worked for four seasons as an assistant for Friar great Ron Wilson with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks ( ) and five years under Wilson with the Washington Capitals ( ). While in Anaheim, Army was part of the team that earned the franchise s first ever playoff berth and advanced to the second round, where the Mighty Ducks fell to the eventual Stanley Cup Champions Detroit Red Wings. That season, Anaheim s team featured Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya, one of the best scoring tandems in league history, as they finished second and third, respectively, in the league in scoring. In the first year with the Capitals, Army helped lead the squad to the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals, the team s only appearance in the finals. USA HOCKEY In addition to the NHL and AHL, Army has worked with USA Hockey. In 1994 and 1996, Army was assistant coach for the U.S. National Team. The 1996 U.S. National Team captured the bronze medal at the World Championships in Vienna, Austria. Most recently, he served as an assistant with the U.S. World Cup Team in Army also was the head coach for the U.S. Under 18 Team at the 1995 and 1996 Pacific Cup. FIRST COACHING EXPERIENCE Army began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the Friars in He spent six seasons as an assistant at PC under Mike McShane, helping to lead the Friars to more than 20 wins in four of the six seasons. The Friars also posted a overall record in that span, including appearances in the 1989 and 1991 NCAA Tournaments. During that time, Army helped coach and recruit Friar All-Americans Rick Bennett (second team ), Rob Gaudreau (second team ) and AS A STUDENT-ATHLETE Army is one of the top players in Friar history. He ranks first all-time in games played (151), sixth in points (179), 11th in goals (71) and tied for fourth in assists (108). He was a member of the class with the most wins in Friar hockey history. He helped the squad post a mark over four seasons, including the top single-season record ever at PC in 1983 ( ). The Friars won 20 or more games in each of his four seasons as a player and reached the Frozen Four twice (1983 and 1985). In 1985, he served as the team captain and helped guide the Friars to the inaugural HOCKEY EAST title with a 2-1 double overtime win over Boston College. He also led Providence to the NCAA title game where PC was defeated by Rensselaer (2-1). In his senior season, Army led HOCKEY EAST in scoring, registering 74 points (27 goals, 47 assists). In recognition of his efforts, he was named First Team All-America and earned the Walter Brown Award as the top American-born player in New England. He also was a Hobey Baker Finalist in Army also excelled in the classroom. He graduated with honors (political science) and was an academic All-American. During his high school years at East Providence, Army was a two-time First Team All-State Selection in hockey and was named to the All-Division Second Team in baseball. He also was named the Rhode Island Scholar Athlete of the Year during his senior year in That spring, he was selected in the seventh round of that NHL Draft by the Colorado Rockies, which then became the New Jersey Devils. PROFESSIONAL PLAYING EXPERIENCE Army played professional hockey for the Maine Mariners of the AHL ( ), Peliitat of the Finish Div. 1 League ( ) and Fribourg of the Swiss Elite League. PERSONAL Army and his family have always had strong ties to hockey in Rhode Island. His father, Tom, played baseball and hockey at PC and captained the hockey team in His grandfather, George, was the long-time trainer for the Rhode Island Reds of the AHL. His brothers, Tom, Jr., and Bill, both played high school hockey at East Providence High School and went on to play at Wesleyan and Boston College, respectively. Army and his wife, Sue, a former PC track and cross country star, have two sons, Derek (18) and Travis (16).
