The Friars will look to extend their unbeaten streak when they play two games against seventh-ranked Vermont on February 6-7 at the Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt. SERIES HISTORY VS. VERMONT... In 36 all-time meetings between Vermont and Providence College, the Catamounts lead The first meeting between the two teams this season resulted in a 2-2 overtime tie on November 7 at Schneider Arena. The Friars rallied from a 2-0 deficit as senior Pierce Norton (South Boston, Mass.) scored twice to force overtime. Last season, the Friars posted a 2-1 record against the Catamounts, including a 4-0 win at Vermont. SCOUTING VERMONT... The Catamounts are coming off a 3-2 loss at New Hampshire on Friday, January 30 in Durham, N.H. Jack Downing scored one goal, while Viktor Stalberg tied the game with his 15th goal of the season in the third period. However, the Wildcats earned the victory with a power-play goal late in the third period. Rob Madore made 29 saves. Stalberg leads the team in scoring with 26 points (15 g, 11 a), while Peter Lenes is second with 24 points (10 g, 14 a). Madore has seen a bulk of the action in net for the Catamounts. He has posted an record, a 2.23 goals against average and a.919 save percentage. Series Information Vs. Senior Nick Mazzolini (Anchorage, Alaska) was named Hockey East Player of the Week on February 3. It marked the first time in his career that Mazzolini earned the honor. Senior Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.) was named as one of the 16 semifinalists for the 57th Walter Brown Award, presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England. PC has posted a mark against ranked teams this season, including a 4-2 win at No. Boston University on January 13, marking the highest ranked opponent that PC has beaten since December 29, 2007 (No. 5 Michigan State). Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) became the first PC goalie to record consecutive 40-plus save performances (42 on 1/16 and 40 on 1/18) since Nolan Schaefer did it on February 16 and 22, Schaefer made 44 and 42 saves, respectively. Alex Beaudry earned two consecutive Hockey East Rookie of the Week honors (1/12 and 1/19) and was the league s runner-up for Rookie of the Month for January. Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) is the first PC freshman to reach the 20-point mark since Cody Wild recorded 21 points during the season. Bergland is second among Hockey East freshmen in scoring. Of the 61 goals scored by the Friars this season, 30 have been scored by freshmen and sophomores. PC ranks fourth in Hockey East in shots, averaging 30.5 per game. Pierce Norton has matched a career-high with 10 assists this season. JANUARY SUCCESS... The Friars finished the month of January with a record to climb within three points of the final Hockey East playoff spot. Among PC s four wins in January was a 4-2 triumph at second-ranked Boston University on January 13. During the last two seasons, the Friars have posted an record in January. TAORMINA CLIMBING THE CHART... Matt Taormina continues to climb PC s all-time scoring list among defensemen. He currently has 63 career points (19 goals, 44 assists) and is 18th all-time at PC. The last PC blueliner to reach the 60-point mark was Stephen Wood 04 who finished with 88 points (28 goals, 60 assists) and was named to the All-America Second Team in Defenseman Ron Wilson is PC s overall all-time leading scorer with 250 points (78 goals, 172 assists). Last season, Taormina finished with career-highs in goals (9), assists (18), and points (27). He was named to the All-Hockey East Second Team and to the All-New England Team. This season, he is second on the team with 18 points (four goals, 14 assists) and is tied for second among Hockey East defensemen. FRIARS TAKE THREE POINTS... The Friars posted a win and a tie last weekend. On January 30, the Friars played No. 11 Boston College to a 2-2 overtime tie at Schneider Arena. Freshman Danny New (White Plains, N.Y.) and Nick Mazzolini each scored for the Friars, while Alex Beaudry made 27 saves. The tie extended PC s regular season unbeaten streak against the Eagles to three games. The following night, the Friars jumped out to a 4-0 second period lead against Merrimack and held on for a 5-3 win. It marked the Friars first win over the Warriors since March 3, Mazzolini and junior John Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.) each scored twice, while classmate Mark Fayne (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) also scored for PC. Mazzolini scored the last two goals for the Friars and also added one assist. It marked the first time that PC had two different players score twice in one game since December 29, RECAP OF FIRST MEETING VS. VERMONT... The Friars rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie Vermont, 2-2, on November 7 at Schneider Arena. Vermont scored a short-handed goal and a power-play tally to take a 2-0 lead. Brian Roloff scored a short-hander at 8:20 as he pounced on a rebound. Just 1:27 later, Colin Vock scored on a slap shot from the right circle. However, the Friars used the man advantage as well to cut the lead in half at 15:29. Pierce Norton took a feed from Matt Taormina and fired a one timer past Vermont goaltender Mike Spillane. In the third period, Norton struck again on the power play. Matt Bergland slid a cross-ice pass to Norton who fired a quick one timer into the net at 7:06. JOHN CAVANAGH LEADING THE TEAM IN GOALS... Junior cocaptain John Cavanagh leads the Friars with a career-high nine goals this season. The nine goals are more than he had (6) in his first two seasons combined. He has two multiple-goal games (1/10 vs. UMass Lowell and 1/31 vs. Merrimack). In addition, Cavanagh is tied for third one the team with 16 points. SAVE THE BEST FOR LATER... The Friars have done a bulk of their scoring in the second and third periods this season. Of the 61 goals scored by PC this season, 24 have come in the second period and 23 in the third period. In the last 14 games, the Friars have scored 16 goals in the third period, including a goal with 53 seconds left in the third period to help PC to a 5-4 win at UMass on January 16. FRIAR FRESHMAN LEADS PC IN SCORING... Matt Bergland continues to lead the team in scoring with 21 points (seven goals, 14 assists) and is looking to become the first Friar freshman to lead the team in points since Rob Gaudreau did it during the season. That season, Gaudreau totaled 57 points on 28 goals and 29 assists. Bergland has six multiple-point games, including a three-point performance (one goal, two assists) in a win over Bowling Green on October 18 at Schneider Arena. SOPHOMORE CLASS GETTING THE UPPER HAND... The PC sophomore class leads the other classes in scoring with 18 goals and 38 assists. Four sophomores rank in the top-10 in scoring, led by Ian O Connor (Londonderry, N.H.), who is fifth with 13 points (five goals, eight assists). Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.) is sixth with 12 points (four goals, eight assists), while Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.), who has four goals and four assists and Austin Mayer (Providence, R.I.), who has three goals and five assists, are tied for eighth with eight points each. 3 FRIARS SIGN GOALTENDER... Providence College Coach Tim Army announced on January 9 that student-athlete Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ontario) committed to attend Providence College beginning in January Beaudry is a 5-foot-10, 170-pound goaltender who played for the Kemptville 73 s and the Gloucester Rangers of the Central Junior Hockey League this season. In 29 games total games, Beaudry recorded a 3.54 goals against average, a.907 save percentage and two shutouts. FRIARS DRAFTED BY NHL TEAMS... This year s PC team features two players who were selected in the NHL Entry Draft. Senior Pierce Norton (South Boston, Mass.) was a 2004 ninth-round pick, 285th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Junior Mark Fayne (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) was chosen in the fifth round, 155th overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 2005 draft. OCEAN STATE CONNECTION... The men s hockey team has a strong contingent of Rhode Islanders. In addition to seven players, Head Coach Tim Army (East Providence) and Assistant Coach David Berard (Coventry) also hail from the Ocean State. The Rhode Islanders on this season s team are: juniors David Cavanagh (Warwick), John Cavanagh (Warwick), and Matt Tommasiello (Cranston), sophomores Eric Baier (North Kingstown) and Austin Mayer (Providence), as well as freshmen Justin Gates (Cranston) and Shawn Tingley (North Kingstown). HEAD COACH TIM ARMY... Tim Army is in his fourth season with the Friars. Army returned to his alma mater to take over the reigns of the PC hockey program on June 17, 2005 after spending three seasons with the Portland Pirates of the AHL. A 1985 graduate of the College and an East Providence native, Army became the 11th coach in the history of the program. He is the first PC alumnus to coach the team since his former coach Lou Lamoriello guided the Friars ( ). He also is the first former Hockey East player to be a head coach in the league. In his first season, Army led the team to a overall record, including a mark in Hockey East action. The 17 wins were the most by a Friar squad since In addition, the Friars, who were picked to finish eighth in the preseason coaches poll, recorded 14 conference victories and finished fifth in the league. The 14 Hockey East wins were one shy of tying a school record. During the campaign, the Friars recorded 14 wins and were ranked as high as 11th in the national polls. Among the 14 victories for the Friars, were two triumphs at Boston College, which went on to claim the national title. The Friars also posted an impressive win over defending national champion and fifth-ranked Michigan State at the Great Lakes Invitational at the Joe Louis Arena. In all, the Friars had 10 wins against ranked teams. Prior to coaching at Portland, Army spent nine seasons as an assistant coach in the NHL for two different teams. He worked for four seasons as an assistant for Friar great Ron Wilson with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks ( ) and five years under Wilson with the Washington Capitals ( ). While in Anaheim, Army was part of the team that earned the franchise s first ever playoff berth and advanced to the second round, where the Mighty Ducks fell to the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings. Army helped lead the Capitals to the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals, the team s only appearance in the finals.
