The Friars finished the weekend with a record. PC traveled to Maine on Friday, November 6 and came away with a 2-2 tie. The Friars fell in the shootout, 2-1. Junior Alyse Ruff (Tualatin, Ore.) and freshman Nicole Anderson (Jordan, Minn.) scored for PC while sophomore Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.) assisted on both tallies. On Sunday, the Friars hosted No. 9 Northeastern and earned a 1-1 tie. Cottrell netted her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the game. Sophomore goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) made 28 saves in the game and 54 on the weekend. Following a scoreless overtime, the two teams completed the longest shootout (13 rounds, 26 shooters) in league history. Alyse Ruff scored the tying goal in the seventh round before sophomore Christie Jensen (Delta, B.C.) scored the winner in round 13. Providence s 596 victories are the second-highest total in the country behind New Hampshire. COACHING MILESTONE... Coach Deraney needs only 7 wins to join former coach John Marchetti as the only two Providence coaches to reach 200 victories behind the Friar bench. Deraney stands at 193 during his tenure at PC. TOP-OF-THE-LINE ROOKIE... Freshman Jessica Cohen was announced as Hockey East Rookie of the Month on Tuesday, November 3. Cohen finished her first nine games as a Friar with three goals and three assists for six points, the second-highest mark on the team. She recorded two points (1 g, 1 a) in the first game of her career in PC s 4-0 victory over Maine on Oct. 2. Of her three goals, two have come as game-winners (10/2 vs. Maine, 10/16 vs. Colgate). Cohen also led PC with a +2 on the plus/minus scale for October. EARLY SEASON HARDWARE... Jessica Cohen was named the Hockey East Rookie of the Week for the second time (10/5/09) on Monday, October 19, after scoring a goal in games on both 10/16 and 10/17, including the game winner against Colgate. She now leads the team with two game-winning goals and is second with seven total points (3 g, 4 a). Genevieve Lacasse was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on 11/9 after leading PC to a weekend. She stopped 54 of 57 shots and denied 12 of 13 shooters in a shootout victory over No. 9 Northeastern on Sunday, November 8. STREAKS AND RANKINGS... Genevieve Lacasse recorded her 1037th save this past weekend, moving her past former Graduate Assistant coach Amy Quinlan ( 04) for seventh all-time. Next on the list is Amy Thomas ( 05) with 1,084. STARTING ON THE DEFENSIVE... Providence has allowed only four goals in the first period this season. The Friars hadn t allowed a first-period goal in six games before Maine opened the scoring on Nov. 6. Providence has only scored three times in the opening 20 minutes. SECOND PERIOD SUCCESS... Providence has outshot its opponents, , in the second period, leading to a 15-8 edge in scoring in the second stanza. Comparably, PC has been outscored, 12-6, in the third. FIRE AT WILL... Providence ranks second in the league with 368 shots on net this season. QUICK ON THE DRAW... Ashley Cottrell leads PC with a winning percentage of 55.7 percent ( ) on the face-off dot. Alyse Ruff stands at 54 percent ( ). As a team, the friars are drawing at 52.7 percent ( ). In 12 games this season, PC has won the faceoff battle eight times. The Friars have yet to win a game in which they lost more face offs than they won. HOCKEY EAST HISTORY... Providence took part in it s third-consecutive shootout on Sunday, November 8 when they defeated Northeastern in 13 rounds. Christie Jensen, the 26th shooter of the day, put home the shootout winner. The three-straight shootouts and the 26 shooters are the longest such records in Hockey East history. PC WELL REPRESENTED... Providence will send three players and one coach to the All- Star Game pitting the best of Hockey East vs. Team USA in Durham, N.H. on November 22. Junior defender Amber Yung and sophomores Genevieve Lacasse and Ashley Cottrell will represent Providence. Assistant Coach Meredith Roth will be among the coaches leading the Hockey East All-Stars. Last season, the class of 2012 led PC with 36 goals (42%), 48 assists (36%) and 84 points (39%). PROVIDENCE VS HOCKEY EAST... The Friars stand at all-time in Hockey East play. Only UNH owns a better record in conference play since the league s creation in Providence won the first three Hockey East Championships. Providence College holds the distinction of winning the inaugural Hockey East Championship in both the men s and women s leagues. SCOUTING BOSTON UNIV... The Terriers come into this weekend with a No. 7/8 ranking in the national polls. BU just finished the weekend with a home and home series against No. 3 UNH. The Terriers lost at home, 4-3, before earning a 4-4 tie and a shootout win in Durham, N.H. BU defeated Vermont, 4-0, at home on Wednesday, November 12. The Terriers are led by sophomore Janelle Kohanchuk and senior Melissa Anderson. Kohanchuk leads all of Hockey East with nine goals while Anderson ranks fifth in the league with eight assists. Senior Melissa Haber has seen the majority of the action this year in net and stands at on the season. She has recorded a 2.61 goals against average and a.897 save percentage. She finished with 756 saves, the fourthhighest total in program history. Former All-American Sara DeCosta holds the top-three marks while Jana Bugden stands at fifth all-time in a season with 752. Lacasse s 756 saves are the second most by a freshman. Decosta s 794 saves as a freshman in stands as the top mark. Lacasse s 1.94 goals against average stands at fourth best in a single season. THE FEARLESS LEADERS... Senior defenseman Colleen Martin (Woburn, Mass.) has been announced as the captain of the Friars. Martin finished her junior season with seven assists and a team-high +11 on the plus/minus ranking. Coming into 2009, she has 15 points on three goals and 12 assists. Junior Jean O Neill will wear the A on her sweater as the assistant captain. O Neill finished with five goals and three assists for 8 points. As a freshman, she tallied seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points. FRIENDS OF FRIAR ROOM... The season marks the completion of the Friends of Friar Room in Schneider Arena. This room was created for the men s and women s ice hockey donors and supporters. The Friends of Friar Room includes plasma televisions, high-top counters and a media library room displaying the history of Friar Hockey. PACKING THE HALL... The 1998 Olympic women s hockey team has been announced as a 2009 inductee into the US Hockey Hall of Fame. The 1998 US women s team won the inaugural gold medal in women s hockey. Providence had the distinct honor of sending the largest contingent to the Olympics in PC was represented by seven former Friars including; team captain Cammi Granato ( 93), Chris Bailey ( 94), Laurie Baker ( 97), Alana Blahoski ( 96), Sara DeCosta ( 00), Lisa Brown-Miller ( 88) and Vicki Movsessian ( 94). The Friars finished the season with a overall record with a mark and a fourth-place finish in the Hockey East Conference. Providence qualified for the Hockey East Tournament and advanced to the semifinal game for the seventh consecutive season, joining New Hampshire as the only two teams to reach the conference semifinals in every year of Hockey East play. As the No. 4 seed in the six-team tournament, Providence defeated No. 5 seed Connecticut, 3-0, in the quarterfinals at Schneider Arena. The Friars fell to No. 1 seed and fifth-ranked New Hampshire, 3-1, in the semifinal game in Durham, N.H ROOKIE OF THE YEAR... At the annual Hockey East Awards Banquet last season, goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) was named Hockey East Goaltending Champion and Hockey East Rookie of the Year. She was honored as a Hockey East Second Team All-Star and was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. She finished the season with a mark to go along with a 1.94 goals against average and a.933 save percentage. ON THE OFFENSIVE... Laura Veharanta finished with 31 points on 16 goals and 15 assists. She led all rookies in goals, points and power-play goals (8). She was named a Hockey East Honorable Mention All-Star and was the only unanimous selection to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team.
