The No. 13/14 Providence College Friars, winners of three of their last four games, will travel to play No. 9/9 Boston College on Friday, February 1 and Merrimack College on Saturday, February 2. SERIES HISTORY VERSUS BOSTON COLLEGE... In 145 all-time meetings, the Eagles lead, , including a mark at Boston College. Last season, the Friars defeated the Eagles, 5-3, on October 31 at Schneider Arena, ending a 10-game (0-7-3) winless streak against the Eagles. However, BC captured the next two meeting versus the Friars. The Friars are seeking their first win at Kelley Rink since January 24, 2003 when they posted a 4-1 victory. SERIES HISTORY VERSUS MERRIMACK... In 99 meetings between the two teams, the Friars lead , including a mark at Merrimack. 3 FRIAR QUICK NOTES... The Friars are over the last 18 games after starting the season with four consecutive losses. The Friars are ranked No. 13 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll and No. 14 in the USCHO.com/CSTV Poll, which were released on January 28. It marks the first time since February 20, 2006 that PC has been ranked nationally. Senior Tyler Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.) was named Hockey East Player of the Week, marking the third time in his career that he has earned the honor. The Friars are coming off a home-and-home sweep of No. 11 Northeastern over the weekend. The Friars posted a 5-1 win on Friday and a 5-2 triumph on Saturday at Schneider Arena. The Friars went 5-for-13 on the power-play, including a 3-for-9 effort during Friday s contest. Jon Rheault leads the team in scoring with 22 points on 13 goals and nine assists, while junior defenseman Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.) is second with 21 points (seven goals and 14 assists). Senior goalie Tyler Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.) made his 103rd appearance last night to climb for second all-time at PC. Dan Dennis (109 from ) holds the record for most career games played at PC. Providence College has gone 22-for-95 (.232) on the power play this season, which ranks second in Hockey East and fifth nationally. The 22 goals are five more than last season s total on the man advantage. The Friars are tied for the national lead with eight short-handed goals. Junior defensemen Matt Taormina and Cody Wild (North Providence, R.I.) rank second and third in the nation, respectively in points per game among defensemen. Taormina (7 g, 14 a - 21 pts.) is averaging 0.95 points per game, while Wild (4 g, 13 a - 17 pts.) is averaging 0.94 points. SCOUTING BOSTON COLLEGE... The ninth-ranked Eagles come into the weekend on a six-game unbeaten streak, including a tie and a win at Maine last weekend. BC tied the Black Bears, 3-3, on January 25 and posted a 4-2 win the following night in Orono, Maine. In the win on Saturday, BC had four different goal scorers, while Dan Bertram had three assists to lead the way. The Eagles last defeat came on January 5 at Clarkson. Junior Nathan Gerbe leads the team and Hockey East in scoring with 37 points (19 goals, 18 assists), while Joe Whitney is second with 32 points (seven goals, 25 assists). In goal, John Muse has played in 24 games and has posted a record, a 2.27 goals against average and a.919 save percentage. SCOUTING MERRIMACK... The Warriors, who are 4-2 in their last six games, are coming off a 4-0 home, non-conference win over Canisius on Saturday, January 26. Four different Warriors scored, including Matt Jones power-play goal early in the second period which proved to be the game winner. J.C. Robitaille added one goal and one assist. Rob Ricci leads the team in scoring with 26 points (eight goals, 18 assists), while Chris Barton is second with 16 points (five goals, 11 assists). Jones is tops on the team with 11 goals. Andrew Brathwaite and Patrick Watson have split time in goal and have combined to post a 2.76 goals against average and a.904 save percentage. RECAP OF LAST WEEKEND... The Friars swept a home-and-home series against No. 11 Northeastern last weekend. On January 25, PC defeated the Huskies, 5-1, at Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass. PC scored three power-play goals and one short-handed tally to earn the victory. Junior Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.) scored two goals and added one assist, while classmate Nick Mazzolini (Anchorage, Alaska), senior Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) and freshman Ian O Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) also scored for PC. In goal, senior Tyler Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.) made 30 saves. The following night, the Friars rallied from a 2-0 deficit to post a 5-2 triumph over the Huskies. Junior Pierce Norton (South Boston, Mass.) had two goals and one assist, while sophomore John Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.) recorded one goal and one assist. Freshman Ben Farrer (Calgary, Alberta) scored the game winner and junior John Mori (Westport, Conn.) completed the scoring. Sims made 25 saves. RHEAULT NEARING THE CENTURY MARK... PC senior co-captain Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.), who has 14 points (10 goals, four assists) in the last 12 games, has 96 career points. He is four points shy of becoming the 48th Friar to reach the century mark. Jon DiSalvatore ( ) was the last Friar to reach the century mark when he accomplished the feat on October 12, This season, Rheault leads the team in scoring with 22 points (13 goals, nine assists) in 22 games. POWER SURGE... After not scoring on the power play in its first three games (0-for-10), PC has gone 22-for-85 (.259) on the man advantage over the last 18 games, including 5-for-13 over the last two games. Overall, the Friars are 22-for-95 (.232) on the power play, which ranks second in Hockey East and fifth in the nation. Ten different Friars have scored on the power play this season, including junior Pierce Norton (South Boston, Mass.) who leads the team with six goals on the man advantage. FRIARS THRIVING WHILE SHORT HANDED... The Friars, who did not score a short-handed goal in their first six contests, have scored eight short-handed goals in the last 17 games. PC is tied for the national lead with eight short-handed tallies this season. The Friars tallied two goals while short handed on November 1 against Boston University. Juniors Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.) and Nick Mazzolini (Anchorage, Alaska) are is tied for 11th in the nation with two short-handed goals, while five others each have one short-handed tally. The Friars are ranked second in Hockey East and 12th nationally on the penalty kill (.878). FRIARS AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS... The Friars are against ranked teams this season. Most recently, PC posted two wins over No. 11 Northeastern (5-1 on 1/25; 5-2 on 1/26). The Friars also defeated No. 9/10 UMass, 3-2, on January 18. Prior to that, the Friars split a weekend series against No. 13 UMass Lowell. PC defeated the River Hawks, 4-3, in overtime on January 11 and fell 3-2 in overtime on January 12. PC also upended No. 5 Michigan State, 5-3, on December 29. Earlier this season, the Friars were beaten by No. 6 New Hampshire, 5-4, in overtime on November 17 and by No. 1 Michigan on December 28. The Friars posted two wins at No. 11 Maine on November On October 26, PC downed No. 16 UMass, 3-1. The Friars also have played against No. 12/16 St. Lawrence and No. 13/7 Clarkson this season. Last season, the Friars posted a record against ranked opponents. TAORMINA OFF TO STRONG START... Junior defenseman Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.) is off to a strong start for the Friars. He is second on the team with a career-high 21 points (seven goals, 14 assists). In his first two seasons at PC, he recorded 18 points (six goals, 12 assists). He has tallied 19 points (six goals, 13 assists) in the last 14 games, including a career-high five points (two goals, three assists) in a 6-2 win at No. 11 Maine on November 9. He is tied for 11th in the nation with two short-handed goals and among defensemen he is the national leader in that category. In addition, he is second in the nation among defensemen with 0.95 points per game average. SIMS SETS PC RECORDS... Senior goalie Tyler Sims shutout win at Vermont on December 1 marked his sixth career shutout, which set a Friar record. He now has seven shutouts after blanking Brown on December 4 for his second consecutive shutout. He is the only PC goalie to record back-to-back shutouts as he also did it on October 21-22, 2005 against UMass Lowell. His three shutouts this season also ties a school record for most in one season (set by Mario Proulx , Nolan Schaefer and Sims in ). Sims earned his fifth shutout on November 10 at No. 11 Maine and tied the PC record for most career shutouts, which was set by Mario Proulx ( ). He also ranks seventh all-time with 2,496 career saves and is second all-time with 103 games played.

4 PROVIDENCE COLLEGE HOCKEY HEAD COACH TIM ARMY... Tim Army is in his third season with the Friars. Army returned to his alma mater to take over the reigns of the PC hockey program on June 17, 2005 after spending three seasons with the Portland Pirates of the AHL. A 1985 graduate of the College and an East Providence native, Army became the 11th coach in the history of the program. He is the first PC alumnus to coach the team since his former coach Lou Lamoriello guided the Friars ( ). He also is the first former Hockey East player to be a head coach in the league. In his first season, Army led the team to a overall record, including a mark in Hockey East action. The 17 wins were the most by a Friar squad since In addition, the Friars, who were picked to finish eighth in the preseason coaches poll, recorded 14 conference victories and finished fifth in the league. The 14 Hockey East wins were one shy of tying a school record. Prior to coaching at Portland, Army spent nine seasons as an assistant coach in the NHL for two different teams. He worked for four seasons as an assistant for Friar great Ron Wilson with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks ( ) and five years under Wilson with the Washington Capitals ( ). While in Anaheim, Army was part of the team that earned the franchise s first ever playoff berth and advanced to the second round, where the Mighty Ducks fell to the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings. Army helped lead the squad to the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals, the team s only appearance in the finals. FRIARS DRAFTED BY THE NHL... This season s PC team features six players who were selected in the NHL Entry Draft. Senior defenseman Trevor Ludwig (Grapevine, Texas) was a 2004 sixth-round selection, 183rd overall by the Dallas Stars. Junior Pierce Norton (South Boston, Mass.) was a 2004 ninth-round pick, 285th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Sophomore Mark Fayne (Bourne, Mass.) was chosen in the fifth round, 155th overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 2005 draft. In 2006, PC had two players selected in the fifth round. Junior Cody Wild (North Providence, R.I.) was the 140th overall selection, while senior Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) was the 145th pick. Freshman Joe Lavin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was picked in the fifth round (126th overall) in the 2007 Draft. OCEAN STATE CONNECTION... The men s hockey team has a strong contingent of Rhode Islanders. In addition to six players, Head Coach Tim Army (East Providence) and Assistant Coach David Berard (Coventry) also hail from the Ocean State. The Rhode Islanders on this season s team are: junior Cody Wild (North Providence), sophomores David Cavanagh, John Cavanagh (Warwick), and Matt Tommasiello (Cranston) as well as freshmen Eric Baier (North Kingstown) and Austin Mayer (Providence).
