The two teams meet again on Saturday, March 5 at Schneider Arena as the Friars will honor seniors Eric Baier (North Kingstown, R.I.), Ben Farrer (Calgary, Alta.), Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.), Paul Golden (Milton, Mass.), Jordan Kremyr (Cloverdale, B.C.), Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) and Ian O Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) on Senior Night. PLAYOFF PICTURE The Friars come into this weekend two points away from the eighth and final playoff spot. If the Friars win one game and UMass loses twice to Maine, PC will earn the final spot because it has the tiebreaker advantage against the Minutemen. PC could finish as high as seventh. Sophomore Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) scored the game winner, while Ian O Connor scored an empty-net goal to seal the win. FRIAR QUICK NOTES In Providence s 3-3 overtime tie versus UMass Lowell on February 25, the Friars set a school record by playing in their 11th overtime game this season. The Friars also set a school mark with their eighth tie. Senior Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.) scored two goals on February 25 marking the third time in his career and second this season that he has scored twice. In the 3-3 tie against UMass Lowell, sophomore Rem Vanderbeek (Warren, N.J.) recorded his first career point with an assist, while junior Andy Balysky (Randolph, N.J.) tallied a career-high two assists. Alex Beaudry is 62 saves away from matching his career mark that he set last season with 906 saves. The 906 stops also ranks him fifth all-time in PC s single-season saves list. The Friars have played in nine games that have been decided by one goal this season. Overall, the Friars are 3-6 in one-goal contests. Senior Kyle MacKinnon s career-high 14 goals this season marks the most by a Friar since when Jon Rheault finished with 17. RECAP OF LAST WEEKEND The Friars posted a record last week in two games against UMass Lowell. On February 25, PC rallied to tie UMass Lowell, 3-3, in overtime at Schneider Arena. Senior Matt Germain scored twice, including the game-tying goal, while junior Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) also scored to lead the Friars. Junior Andy Balysky had two assists and sophomore Rem Vanderbeek recorded his first career point with an assist. In goal, junior Alex Beaudry totaled 33 saves. The following night, PC was defeated by UMass Lowell, 7-2, at the Tsongas Center. Senior Ben Farrer and Bergland each scored for the Friars, while senior Ian O Connor recorded two assists. SCOUTING MERRIMACK Merrimack s eight-game winning streak and its school record nine-game road-winning stretch came to an end last weekend as Maine swept a two-game series from the Warriors in Orono. On February 25, the Warriors were defeated, 4-0. The following night, the Black Bears posted a 7-1 triumph over the Warriors as Jeff Velleca scored the lone goal for Merrimack. It marked the first time this season that the Warriors lost consecutive games. Stephane Da Costa (13 g, 23 a) leads the team in scoring with 36 points, while Chris Barton (13 g, 22 a) is a close second with 35 points. Joe Cannata has seen a bulk of the action in net and has posted a record, a 2.30 goals against average and a.915 save percentage.

3 WORKING OVERTIME PC s 3-3 tie against UMass Lowell on February 25 marked the 11th overtime game for the Friars this season which is a school record. The previous record was 10 that was established on two different occasions ( and ). Five of the last 12 PC games have gone into overtime. Overall, the Friars have played seven overtime games on the road and four at Schneider Arena. ALL TIED UP In addition to setting the school record for overtime games, the Friars also established the school mark with their eighth tie on February 25. The team set the school mark with seven draws. The Friars are tied for the Hockey East lead with the eight ties and in conference games only, PC also is tied for the league-lead with seven draws. MacKINNON LEADS PC TEAM IN GOALS Senior Kyle MacKinnon leads the Friars with a career-high 14 goals. In addition, he is second on the with 22 points. MacKinnon has two multiple-goal games, including three goals at Alabama- Huntsville on November 12. His 14 goals rank tied for ninth in Hockey East. In 34 games last season, MacKinnon finished tied for the team lead with 12 goals and led with 25 points. PC PENALTY KILL RANKS FIFTH IN HOCKEY EAST The Providence penalty kill ranks fifth in Hockey East with an 83.6 percentage ( ). Last season, the Friars led Hockey East last season on the penalty kill (84.4 %). BEAUDRY CLIMBING THE SAVES LIST AT PROVIDENCE Alex Beaudry has climbed into eighth all-time at Providence in career saves with 2242 stops. Beaudry is 277 stops away from surpassing Boyd Ballard (2518 saves), who is seventh at PC. Nolan Schaefer 03 holds the Friar record with 2848 career stops. SENIOR CLASS LEADING THE WAY The PC senior class has accounted for 44 (63.7 %) of the team s 69 goals and 92 (51.1 %) of the team s 180 points. Kyle MacKinnon leads the team with 14 goals, while Ian O Connor is tops on the squad with 23 points. SCHALLER RACKING UP THE POINTS Sophomore Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.), who had five points (2 g, 3 a) in his rookie season, has 18 points (4 g, 14 a) this season, including two game winners. He ranks tied for third on the team in points (18) and second in assists (14). FARRER PROVIDING SCORING PUNCH Senior assistant captain Ben Farrer (Calgary, Alberta) has career-highs in goals (4), assists (9) and points (13) through 31 games this season. Farrer, who has not played a full season because of injuries, had a previous career-high of four points, which he set in his freshman and sophomore seasons. He amassed 10 points (1 g, 9 a) in his first three seasons at PC. FRIAR ALUMNI UPDATE Four PC alumni are currently playing in the NHL. Fernando Pisani 00 is playing for the Chicago Blackhawks after signing with the Stanley Cup champions this past summer. Hal Gill 97, who helped the Pittsburgh Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup title, is an assistant captain with the Montreal Canadiens. Matt Taormina 09 played in his first NHL game on October 8 for the New Jersey Devils. The undrafted defenseman scored his first-career NHL goal and added one assist on October 15. Mark Fayne 10 made his NHL debut on November 22 for the Devils. In addition, Jay Leach 01 was called up by the New Jersey Devils on February 12. There also are two former Friars who were part of the U.S.A. men s hockey team which captured the silver medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Brian Burke 77, who is the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, served as the general manager of Team U.S.A. Ron Wilson 77, the head coach of the Maple Leafs, was the head coach of the Americans. Lou Lamoriello 63, former student-athlete, head coach and athletic director at PC, is the current President and General Manager of the Devils. 4 TIM ARMY Head Coach Sixth Season Providence College 85 AS FRIAR HEAD COACH Tim Army is in his sixth season as head coach at Providence College. Army became the 11th coach in the history of the program. He is the first PC alumnus to coach the team since his former coach Lou Lamoriello guided the Friars ( ). He also is the first former HOCKEY EAST player to be a head coach in the league. In his first season, Army led the team to a overall record, including a mark in HOCKEY EAST action. The 17 wins were the most by a Friar squad since In addition, the Friars, who were picked to finish eighth in the preseason coaches poll, recorded 14 conference victories and surprised many as they finished fifth in the league. The 14 HOCKEY EAST wins were one shy of tying a school record. In , Army guided the Friars to the HOCKEY EAST Tournament Quarterfinals. PC recorded wins over four ranked teams, including a 7-1 triumph over third-ranked UNH. Several individuals had strong seasons for the Friars, including Mark Fayne who was named to the HOCKEY EAST All-Rookie Team. During the campaign, the Friars recorded 14 wins and were ranked as high as 11th in the national polls. Among the 14 victories for the Friars were two triumphs at Boston College, which went on to claim the national title. The Friars also posted an impressive win over defending national champion and fifth-ranked Michigan State at the Great Lakes Invitational at the Joe Louis Arena. In all, the Friars had 10 wins against ranked teams. The Friars had a rebuilding season in , but recorded an impressive victory at then No. 2 Boston University, which went on to capture the 2009 NCAA title. PC also captured the Mayor s Cup trophy for the second consecutive season and third in the last four years. Army s team continued to improve during the season as it posted four of its wins over ranked opponents and finished 13th nationally and first in HOCKEY EAST on the penalty kill. PC also claimed the Mayor s Cup for the fourth time in Army s five seasons. AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE EXPERIENCE Army spent three seasons as the head coach of the Portland Pirates of the AHL. He posted a mark in 240 games with the Pirates. In his second season at Portland ( ), Army guided the Pirates to a record of for 85 points as the team qualified for the Calder Cup Playoffs. Portland defeated the Providence Bruins in a first round series, marking the franchise s first playoff series victory in six years. That season, Army s team set numerous records, including highest penalty killing percentage (89.5 percent), fewest goals against in one season (160) and most shutouts in a season (17), which also tied the AHL mark. NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE EXPERIENCE Army spent nine seasons as an assistant coach in the NHL for two different teams. He worked for four seasons as an assistant for Friar great Ron Wilson with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks ( ) and five years under Wilson with the Washington Capitals ( ). While in Anaheim, Army was part of the team that earned the franchise s first ever playoff berth and advanced to the second round, where the Mighty Ducks fell to the eventual Stanley Cup Champions Detroit Red Wings. That season, Anaheim s team featured Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya, one of the best scoring tandems in league history, as they finished second and third, respectively, in the league in scoring. In the first year with the Capitals, Army helped lead the squad to the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals, the team s only appearance in the finals. USA HOCKEY In addition to the NHL and AHL, Army has worked with USA Hockey. In 1994 and 1996, Army was assistant coach for the U.S. National Team. The 1996 U.S. National Team captured the bronze medal at the World Championships in Vienna, Austria. Army also served as an assistant with the U.S. World Cup Team in Army also was the head coach for the U.S. Under 18 Team at the 1995 and 1996 Pacific Cup. Most recently, Army coached the 2010 U.S. Under-18 Select Team to a second place finish at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in Piestany, Slovakia. It marked the highest finish by a U.S. team since FIRST COACHING EXPERIENCE Army began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the Friars in He spent six seasons as an assistant at PC under Mike McShane, helping to lead the Friars to more than 20 wins in four of the six seasons. The Friars also posted a overall record in that span, including appearances in the 1989 and 1991 NCAA Tournaments. During that time, Army helped coach and recruit Friar All-Americans Rick Bennett (second team ), Rob Gaudreau (second team ) and Chad Quenneville (second team and 1995) as well as NHL players Chris Therien, Hal Gill and Craig Darby. AS A STUDENT-ATHLETE Army is one of the top players in Friar history. He ranks first all-time in games played (151), sixth in points (179), 11th in goals (71) and tied for fourth in assists (108). He was a member of the class with the most wins in Friar hockey history. He helped the squad post a mark over four seasons, including the top single-season record ever at PC in 1983 ( ). The Friars won 20 or more games in each of his four seasons as a player and reached the Frozen Four twice (1983 and 1985). In 1985, he served as the team captain and helped guide the Friars to the inaugural HOCKEY EAST title with a 2-1 double overtime win over Boston College. He also led Providence to the NCAA title game where PC was defeated by Rensselaer (2-1). In his senior season, Army led HOCKEY EAST in scoring, registering 74 points (27 goals, 47 assists). In recognition of his efforts, he was named First Team All-America and earned the Walter Brown Award as the top American-born player in New England. He also was a Hobey Baker Finalist in Army also excelled in the classroom. He graduated with honors (political science) and was an academic All-American. During his high school years at East Providence, Army was a two-time First Team All-State Selection in hockey and was named to the All- Division Second Team in baseball. He also was named the Rhode Island Scholar Athlete of the Year during his senior year in That spring, he was selected in the seventh round of that NHL Draft by the Colorado Rockies, which became the New Jersey Devils. PROFESSIONAL PLAYING EXPERIENCE Army played professional hockey for the Maine Mariners of the AHL ( ), Peliitat of the Finish Div. 1 League ( ) and Fribourg of the Swiss Elite League. PERSONAL Army and his family have always had strong ties to hockey in Rhode Island. His father, Tom, played baseball and hockey at PC and captained the hockey team in His grandfather, George, was the long-time trainer for the Rhode Island Reds of the AHL. His brothers, Tom, Jr., and Bill, both played high school hockey at East Providence High School and went on to play at Wesleyan and Boston College, respectively. Army and his wife, Sue, a former PC track and cross country star, have two sons, Derek (19) and Travis (17).
