3 Tim Army Head Coach Fourth Season Tim Army is in his fourth season as head coach of the Providence College men's hockey team. He took over the reigns of the Friar hockey team on June 17, A 1985 graduate of the College and an East Providence native, Army became the 11th coach in the history of the program. He is the first PC alumnus to coach the team since his former coach Lou Lamoriello guided the Friars ( ). He also is the first former HOCKEY EAST player to be a head coach in the league. In his first season, Army revitalized and brought plenty of excitement to the program. He led the team to a overall record, including a mark in Hockey East action. The 17 wins were the most by a Friar squad since In addition, the Friars, who were picked to finish eighth in the preseason coaches poll, recorded 14 conference victories and surprised many as they finished fifth in the league. The 14 HOCKEY EAST wins was one shy of tying a school record. In , Army guided the Friars to the HOCKEY EAST Tournament Quarterfinals. The Friars outshot their opponents in 30 of the 36 games as they continued to get acclimated to Army's fast-paced, aggressive style of hockey. PC recorded wins over four ranked teams, including a 7-1 triumph over third-ranked New Hampshire on February 24. Several individuals had strong seasons for the Friars, including Mark Fayne (Bourne, Mass.) who was named to the HOCKEY EAST All-Rookie Team. During the campaign, the Friars recorded 14 wins and were ranked as high as 11th in the national polls. Among the 14 victories for the Friars, were two triumphs at Boston College, which went on to claim the national title. The Friars also posted an impressive win over defending national champion and fifth-ranked Michigan State at the Great Lakes Invitational at the Joe Louis Arena. In all, the Friars had 10 wins against ranked teams. Prior to his position at PC, Army, who has an extensive coaching background, spent three seasons as the head coach of the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League. He posted a mark in 240 games with the Pirates. In his second season at Portland ( ), Army guided the Pirates to a record of for 85 points as the team qualified for the Calder Cup Playoffs. Portland defeated the Providence Bruins in a first round series, marking the franchise's first playoff series victory in six years. That season, Army's team set numerous records, including highest penalty killing percentage (89.5%), fewest goals against in one season (160) and most shutouts in a season (17), which also tied the AHL mark. Before his stint at Portland, Army spent nine seasons as an assistant coach in the NHL for two different teams. He worked for four seasons as an assistant for Friar great Ron Wilson with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks ( ) and five years under Wilson with the Washington Capitals ( ). While in Anaheim, Army was part of the team that earned the franchise's first ever playoff berth and advanced to the second round, where the Mighty Ducks fell to the eventual Stanley Cup Champions Detroit Red Wings. That season, Anaheim's team featured Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya, one of the best scoring tandems in league history, as they finished second and third, respectively, in the league in scoring. In the first year with the Capitals, Army helped lead the squad to the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals, the team's only appearance in the finals. "If all my decisions at Providence College are as easy as the one to hire Tim Army, then I'll have an easy time as president," Providence College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley said upon Army's hiring. In addition to the NHL and AHL, Army has worked with USA Hockey. In 1994 and 1996, Army was assistant coach for the U.S. National Team. During that time, Army helped coach and recruit Friar All-Americans Rick Bennett (second team ), Rob Gaudreau (second team ) and Chad Quenneville (second team and 1995) as well as NHL players Chris Therien, Hal Gill and Craig Darby. "I believe in the school so much that it's the only college job that I would want," Army said. "I am where I am both personally and professionally because of Providence College." Army is one of the top players in Friar history. He ranks first all-time in games played (151), sixth in points (179), 11th in goals (71) and tied for fourth in assists (108). 6 Outlook With the return of 22 players from last season s team and the addition of nine freshmen, the Providence College men s hockey program, guided by fourth year coach Tim Army, will look to make a run at the Hockey East title and reach the NCAA Tournament. In all, the Friars have a group of 31 players, who possess speed, skill and have the potential to be among the top teams in one of the toughest conferences in the nation. Last season, the Friars had impressive performances and were ranked as high as No. 11 in the national polls. Among PC s strong performances, included wins against defending national champion Michigan State and a pair of victories at eighth-ranked Boston College, which captured the national title. Late in the season, the Friars were in a strong position to gain one of the top four spots in Hockey East, which would translate into home-ice advantage in the league quarterfinals. Injuries caught up to the Friars as they finished fifth in the league standings. However, the Friars are inching closer to a breakthrough season. The Friars have a strong group of experienced veterans and welcome a deep freshman class, which Friar fans hope adds to a Hockey East title. The Forwards (Returning 15; Lost 1; Newcomers 5) Despite the loss of Jon Rheault, who led the Friars in scoring in each of the last three seasons, the Friars return 15 forwards from the campaign. The returning forwards, who combined for 66 goals last season, will look to improve upon their production from the season before. The Friars finished last season ranked sixth in Hockey East with 91 goals, sixth with 25 power-play goals and led the league with nine short-handed tallies. Senior Pierce Norton (South Boston, Mass.) leads the list of returning forwards for PC as he had a career year in and will look to continue that trend this season. Half of his 14 goals came on the power-play as he finished tied for fourth in the league with seven tallies on the man advantage. He finished the season third in assists on the team and fifth in total points. Cavanagh played on the first power play unit and eight of his points (two goals, six assists) came on the man advantage. Senior Kyle Laughlin (Gambrills, Md.) will also serve as co-captain for the second consecutive season. O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) led all freshmen with 11 points on five goals and six assists as he played in all 36 games last year. The highlight of his season came on February 29 when he scored the game-winner at Kelley Rink to knock off No. 9 Boston College. O Connor also earned the team s Rev. Farrer and Mayer shared similar fates last season as they each had strong performances through the halfway point of the season, but ultimately suffered season-ending injuries. Farrer scored one goal and recorded three assists in 25 games. His lone goal was a game winner versus No. 11 Northeastern on January 26. Mayer also recorded three assists in 16 games. 7 The Defensemen (Returning 5; Lost 3; Newcomers 3) Despite losing three defensemen from last season s team, including Cody Wild, who signed a professional contract, the team will have a solid crew of blue liners. In addition to helping keep the puck away from the net, PC defensemen are expected to be aggressive on the opposite end and also provide a scoring punch to complement the forwards. Last season, the PC defensemen accounted for 17 goals, with 13 of those goals coming from players who will be returning for the season. Senior Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.), who was full strength as a junior after dealing with an injury during his sophomore campaign, finished as the second leading scorer on the team (first among defensemen). He enjoyed a career year, posting nine goals, 18 assists for 27 points. He also was tops on the team with a plus/minus rating of +10. The 2008 All-Hockey East Second Team and All-New England honoree will be looked upon to continue to provide scoring and more leadership as he was named assistant captain for the season. With the loss of Tyler Sims, who finished his career at PC by setting numerous school records, the Friars will look to junior Ryan Simpson (Bow, N.H.), senior Chris Mannix (Hubbardston, Mass.) and freshman Justin Gates (Cranston, R.I.).
