ANZAC Day The most significant day on our national calendar, April 25 is a date eternally etched into Australian and New Zealand history. This year it is even more so, with 2015 marking the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing. What makes ANZAC Day so special to Australians and what it means can differ for each individual. But we all acknowledge that it is a time to refl ect on both past and present confl icts, and pay our respects to the men and women who have served or are serving in them. We honour the memory of the fallen and recognise the sacrifices made by those currently serving in the Australian Defence Force. We take enormous pride in our own partners, family members, past and present, who have all courageously served our country. ANZAC Day gives us perspective. It reminds us to be thankful for the freedoms that our society enjoys today and to never take those freedoms for granted given what was sacrificed for them. This year ANZAC Day falls on a Saturday, three VFL and six TAC Cup games (including one match in Queensland) will be played on this day and we must never forget that being able to play football on ANZAC Day is a privilege. Across the two competitions clubs and supporters will join together for ANZAC Day services and tributes, remembering, honouring and thanking our service men and women. Nothing can compare to what our ANZAC s endured and experienced, but the spirit and values they forged through that adversity on the battlefield all those years ago still live on with us today. We regularly here in sport words like courage, sacrifice, team work, endurance, initiative and respect being used. The meaning of these words will always have a far greater significance when aligned to our Australian Defence Force and it is this special day that we should refl ect on such words when the meanings have a far greater impact and significance that will never be equalled. The Calder Cannons know about sacrifice and courage all too well. A graduate from their program, Corporal Cameron Stewart Baird, was killed while on active duty in Afghanistan in In 2014 Corporal Baird was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration awarded for valour. In awarding the medal the official statement said, Corporal Baird s acts of valour and self-sacrifice regained the initiative and preserved the lives of his team members. His actions were of the highest order and in keeping with the finest traditions of the Australian Army and the Australian Defence Force. In honour of Corporal Baird, the Cannons named their most courageous player award after him. At last year s presentation night, Cannons defender James Latham became the inaugural winner of the Cameron Baird medal. This weekend we should remember that football is just a game. It s a game that is a privilege to play, it s a game that brings us together and it s a game that we should all enjoy whilst also taking the time to remember that we have others to thank for being able to play this game. Enjoy your day at the football this weekend. Steven Reaper AFL Victoria CEO 03

News Positive start to Channel 7 broadcasts The first Peter Jackson VFL game on Channel 7 for season 2015 attracted 52,000 viewers who watched Box Hill Hawks turn the tables on Footscray in the Grand Final rematch. The audience peaked in Melbourne at 88,000 as the match went down to the wire in the final quarter. Last year the TV broadcasts averaged mid 30,000 viewers per week, with the 2014 Round 1 clash between Williamstown and Box Hill rating 22,000. Word quickly spread across social media Saturday that Channel 7 was now the home of VFL football, with the audience increasing across the afternoon. This week Channel 7 will broadcast the first of two Sunday games for the year, with the ANZAC Day weekend clash between Essendon and Collingwood featuring Sunday (April 26) at 11:30am. Both teams will be looking for their first win of season 2015 after Round 1 defeats. The coverage in Round 3 (May 2) will return to the Saturday midday timeslot with the standalone battle between Coburg and Frankston before the new team of Jason Bennett, Nigel Carmody, and Campbell Brown head to Casey Fields for Casey Scorpions versus Sandringham in Round 4 (May 9). Saturday coverage begins at midday with the first bounce at 12:1. The following month of matches from Round 5 is now available on the VFL website. Wynstan Joins VFL as a Premier Partner AFL Victoria is pleased to announce Wynstan as a new Premier Partner of the Peter Jackson VFL in Wynstan, specialising in blinds, doors, awnings and shutters, enters its second sports sponsorship, also a partner of the Sydney Swans in the AFL. The Wynstan brand will feature on the front of all VFL club jumpers this season, as well as on the goal posts in Channel 7 TV games during the year. AFL Victoria Marketing and Commercial Manager Ryan Webb said it was great to have an established brand such as Wynstan join the competition. We look forward to working with Wynstan to increase their brand exposure in Victoria across our 15 clubs and the wider football audience that enjoys state league football. They were drawn to the high standard of football produced in the competition, with the unique mix of elite and semiprofessional footballers. At the same time we still have that community feel being able to listen to the coaches and have a kick on the ground during the breaks. Wynstan Sales and Marketing Director Iain Turner said the competition is a great platform to help grow its brand in what is a relatively new market for the company. The Wynstan team is excited to be supporting the Victorian Football League (VFL) this season. Over the last four years, we have successfully entered the Victorian market using our model from NSW which has been operating for over 45 years and currently has 21 Showrooms, Turner said. Parish injured his thumb in the first quarter of the AFL Academy match against Northern Blues at the MCG, but played the remainder of the match. Despite the injury he still finished with 25 disposals and was named in best. His thumb was broken and required surgery. All going well it is hoped that Parish will return sooner rather than later, but estimates put him out of action for up to two months. Parish, a highly touted draft prospect that has been tipped by many to go in the top 10, will miss a number of TAC Cup matches for the Falcons. With the first Round of the NAB AFL U18 National Championships due to start next month, it is also anticipated that Parish will be on the sidelines when his Vic Country teammates take on arch rivals Vic Metro. Interstate teams join the TAC Cup It won t be a typical away game for Dandenong Stingrays this weekend. With the inclusion of interstate representative teams into the TAC cup competition as they prepare for the NAB AFL U18 National Championships, the Stingrays will take to the skies and fl y to Queensland. The match against Queensland will provide the Stingrays players a travel experience similar to that of AFL players. Gippsland Power and Oakleigh Chargers will also make the trip up north in Round 6 and 8 respectively. NSW/ACT Rams play their first TAC Cup game for 2015 this weekend, with Tasmania and Northern Territory to follow suit in later rounds. 05

News Vics off to represent the World Victoria s All-Nations team for U15 players from a multicultural background have fallen agonisingly short of back to back titles at the National Diversity championships in Cairns. Following a similar path to the Victorian Kickstart Team, the supremely talented side powered home to secure a place in the Grand Final. Despite falling to Queensland, five young Victorians were selected in the Preliminary World Squad to compete at the U16 National Championships later this year. The lists includes Sudan s Buku Khamis, who was named Victoria s best player at the Championships. Victorians in the World Team Squad: Mathiang Chak Ajak Dang Buku Kharmis Thu Sa La Haloti Fonua Sudan/Werribee Sudan/Shepparton Sudan/Metron Myanmar/Geelong New Zealand/Werribee Vics earn Boomerangs honours Seven supremely talented youngsters from the Victoria/ Tasmania Kickstart Team have earned selection in the National Indigenous U15 side known as the Flying Boomerangs. The Boomerangs, which have helped launch the careers of several current AFL stars, including Melbourne livewire Jay Kennedy-Harris, will take on the World Team in a series of matches at the U16 National Championships later this year. The selection comes on the back on of an impressive showing at the National Diversity Championships in Cairns last week. Despite a slow start to the tournament of games against other U15 Indigenous sides from around Australia, Vic/Tas rattled home to force its way into the grand final. Unfortunately, a fairy tale finish wasn t to be with Western Australia proving too strong in the decider. The week is also used to educate players and develop their leadership skills as individuals, with a strong emphasis on strengthening their cultural identity. The match on Saturday June 7 at Burpengary will offer players a chance to don the Big V jumper. The Victorian Amateur Football Association and Western Region Football League each has nine representatives in the preliminary squad, followed by eight from the Northern Football League, seven from the Eastern Football League, six from the Essendon District Football League and finally three from the Southern Football League. 12 Lest we forget 100 years on, Anzac Day is still deeply significant to all Australians. They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow, They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. 08

For many clubs across the Peter Jackson VFL and TAC Cup, football is a way to respect and honour our ANZACs, along with those who continue to serve our great country. The use of football to remember such a significant part of Australia s history is not just an honour for the clubs that play on April 25, but all teams playing across the weekend. This weekend 13 VFL and TAC Cup games will be played, with ceremonies occurring across the majority of games to mark the ANZAC Centenary. The day has a deep meaning for the Calder Cannons, as they remember fallen former player Corporal Cameron Baird (VC, MG), who was killed in operations in Afghanistan in June Baird was awarded the Medal for Gallantry in 2007 for his actions in a search and clearance operation of a Taliban stronghold. In 2014 he received a posthumous Victoria Cross Medal for his acts of valour and self-sacrifice. He is one of only four people to be awarded both the Medal for Gallantry and the Victoria Cross. This Saturday Calder will perform an ANZAC Day ceremony between the two games at RAMS Arena. Geelong Falcons and Bendigo Pioneers will play prior to the Calder Cannons versus North Ballarat Rebels match. The four teams and two sets of umpires will all line up, with the four coaches laying a wreath at the bottom of the fl ag pole prior to the ceremony. Calder has embroidered VCMG onto the number 27 jumper that Cameron Baird wore during his time at the club. Tom Gawthrop, who has the honour of wearing Baird s former number, will be joint captain for the day and will toss the coin, which will be a 1945 penny. In the lead up to the game Calder were visited by 92 year-old WW2 veteran George Denny who spoke to the players about the meaning of ANZAC Day and shared his experiences. Calder Cannons Talent Manager Ian Kyte sees the importance to continually educate his young players about ANZAC Day, its origins and the meaning of the day. By having someone come out and chat to the group the players are made aware of what the day means to other people. It helps put football in the right perspective. People talk about heroics in football. I don t think there is any such thing when compared to military service and what some people have sacrificed. In the VFL, Box Hill Hawks and Coburg will continue their traditional ANZAC match. The two clubs play in honour of two ex-servicemen who served during World War 2 and were stalwarts of the Box Hill and Coburg Football Clubs. Sadly now both gentlemen have passed on. They will play for the Gibbs Lines Cup, named after John Gibbs V and Eric (Tiger) Lines MBE VX Gibbs was noted for his volunteer service as a committee member of the Box Hill Football Club for a remarkable 65 years. People talk about heroics in football. I don t think there is any such thing when compared to military service and what some people have sacrificed. Lines joined Coburg Football Club in 1929 where he had a long career and involvement across the seniors and reserves before he enlisted in the Australian Army Service Corps as a driver. He re-joined the Coburg Football Club for the 1946 season and took over as the coach of the Seconds. Coburg captain Nick Carnell said it was a special game each year, and one that he looked forward to. It is always a game you look forward to, especially the way the AFL structure it, and with a big build up from a VFL perspective as well. The build-up for these games from a club perspective is pretty significant, as it gives you a moment to refl ect and look back and appreciate how lucky we are to be playing football on a day like this. Carnell said the relationship between the club and the local RSL plays an integral part in the day, with a lot of members from the RSL supporting Coburg and attending most games. The president of the RSL is a big fan of the Coburg FC, and the whole time I have been there he has been well invested in the club. There is a great unity between the club and past servicemen and women, Carnell said. From a club point of view, there were people like Eric Lines that left their football club to serve our country during that period, so you look forward to these games as it is symbolic of the great work a lot of people did, and the sacrifices they made. The preparation leading into the game is different than others, with Carnell highlighting that education to the younger players is a key focus. The week is different in preparation for a lot of guys, with many players myself included having family that have served over there, you take a moment to refl ect and look back on that as well. I think with the young guys coming in, they get a real appreciation for what happened back then, they learn about what the occasion actually means. There is no doubt that all clubs this weekend will refl ect and realise how lucky they are to be playing our game of Australian Rules on such a significant weekend. Lest we forget. 09

End of alignment The most unique AFL alignment in the Peter Jackson VFL will come to a close at the end of the 2015 season. Last November the announcement was made that North Melbourne would end its partial alignment with Werribee and North Ballarat Football Clubs. From 2016 they will become a fully aligned partner of Werribee, with North Ballarat to go standalone. This weekend the two clubs will meet for the final time in a home and away season game as aligned partners of the Kangaroos. Werribee President John Nicol outlined the reason behind the decision of his board to move to a full alignment with North Melbourne from next season. This is one of the biggest decisions in the fifty year history of our club and was the result of exhaustive talks between the two clubs and extensive research by our board and staff. In the end the financial and football future of the club saw this as our best option for the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Under the agreement Werribee will retain its name, nickname, colours, theme song and home ground, with current Werribee coach John Lamont to be the senior coach until the end of the 2017 season. Lamont, who was a development and line coach at Arden Street for seven years before taking on the role at Werribee, is looking forward to the continuation of the alignment. The relationship between the two clubs is very strong, very healthy and has produced good results. Werribee has developed players like Ben Brown and Luke McDonald that North has drafted, and we have seen North listed players like Mason Wood (29 games) and Daniel Currie (31 games) hone their skills playing for Werribee, all to the benefit of the North Melbourne Football Club. We have also seen the likes of Ben Ross, Ben Warren and Ben Speight choose to continue their football at Werribee after being delisted by the Kangaroos. North Ballarat will next season become the fifth VFL standalone club, joining Coburg, Frankston, Port Melbourne and Williamstown. Roosters coach Gerard FitzGerald will be sad to see the relationship with North Melbourne end, with three premierships highlighting the strength of the partnership since it started in I am sad our relationship is going to end - and I call it a relationship, rather than an alignment or a partnership, as to me it is a genuine relationship in my view it has been the most successful AFL/VFL relationship since So while we will sadly depart at the end of the year, we are all driven at North Ballarat and North Melbourne to have a good season to finish off, then it is on to another evolution for the club. North Melbourne Director of Football Geoff Walsh said the new full alignment with Werribee would help with the clubs football programs in the region. The full alignment will see the North Melbourne Football Club and its players become even more present in the City of Wyndham, adding to the community programs and initiatives already run by the two clubs. Both Werribee and North Melbourne will benefit greatly from the full alignment and we are sure that not only will this decision enhance the football programs of both clubs but the joint approach will further imprint our game in the Western Region. 11

Country Round Highlights Country round was full of surprises with previously unbeaten teams being knocked off. Geelong Falcons came away with a 1 point win over Gippsland Power, North Ballarat Rebels stamped their authority over Murray Bushrangers, Bendigo Pioneers tough start to the season continued with a 49 point loss to Dandenong and Sandringham Dragons powered home against a depleted Oakleigh Chargers. Geelong and Gippsland started Country Round off with an absolute cracker of a match, it was the closest contest seen in the competition so far this year. Very little separated the teams all day and as the final siren sounded it was the Falcons in the lead by just one point. Gippsland will rue missed opportunities, they could have put the game away but inaccuracy in front of goals hurt them. 16 Sandringham s Round 6 match against Oakleigh was moved forward to Country Round to avoid a significant clash with school football for both teams, but with Vic Metro trial matches being played on the same weekend it led to changed line ups for both teams. With 16 players out Oakleigh couldn t keep their unbeaten record intact. Being able to give so many players game exposure so early in the season was a positive to come out of the match for the Chargers. Leading goal kickers Name Team Games Goals Blake Hardwick Eastern Ranges 3 11 Karl Brown Calder Cannons 3 11 Jy Simpkin Murray Bushrangers 3 8 Bailey Jordan Northern Knights 3 7 Benjamin Ainsworth Gippsland Power 3 7 Joshua Battle Dandenong Stingrays 3 7 Joshua Schache Murray Bushrangers 1 7 Matthew Johnston North Ballarat Rebels North Ballarat Bendigo got the better of the previously undefeated Murray Bushrangers with an 18 point win, Ezeikiel Frank finishing the game with four goals for the Rebels. The win was marred in the final term with Rebel Jarrod Berry being stretched off after being concussed in a tackle. Berry was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons, but later returned home. and Dandenong played the final match of the triple header at the picturesque QEO under lights and it was the Stingrays that got off to a blistering start. Josh Battle led the way for Dandenong with 5 goals and was well supported by Darcy Warke who kicked 4. Bendigo worked their way back into the match but the damage was already done. 15

Club Whiteboard COBURG Congratulations to both sides on very impressive Round 1 wins against Richmond and Werribee respectively. We were delighted to have such a great crowd down at Piranha Park and hope to have many more match days like it this season. Our next home game is next Saturday 2nd of May, starting at 1 against Frankston. This is the Channel 7 TV game with the development side to follow afterwards. We d like to invite everyone to our tribute luncheon for some of those we have lost during the off season, to remember the lives of Billy Kaakour, Peter Dalgleish, Keith Fewkes and John Smith (better known as Jack Smith). Contact the club at info@coburgfc.com.au to book for this luncheon. Make sure you continue to check out all the activity at Coburg at our website with many great videos and articles to see. Go Burgers! ESSENDON Today is a very special occasion as Essendon and Collingwood Football Clubs meet at Windy Hill as part of the clubs ANZAC day commemoration. We welcome John Johnson from the Keilor East RSL and Vince McDonald from the Moonee Valley Brass Band performing the ode and Last Post. Today we also acknowledge our major sponsor Bluestar Global Logistics. The best on ground will be presented the Bluestar medal by Peter Daicos and winning captain and coach the Bluestar cup. We thank Bluestar for their continued support and hope this game continues to be a feature of the VFL fixture. Last week the Bombers went agonisingly close to victory after leading for the majority of the day. Unfortunately a point after the siren was enough to separate the two sides in trying conditions. The Dons will need to finish off their work better if they re to beat the Pies. NORTHERN BLUES The Northern Blues are again proud to offer the cheapest membership in the VFL at just $20 for an Adult. 68 Draft Watch We follow TAC Cup and VFL players on their AFL football journey as they attempt to make it in the big league. In form Honeychurch rewarded. Former Eastern Ranges and now Western Bulldogs player Mitch Honeychurch is the Round 2 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee. Now in his second season at the Bulldogs, Honeychurch played a big role in their 19 point Round 2 victory over Richmond. Playing in his first ever game on the MCG the small forward had 18 possessions and kicked a goal, but it was his defensive pressure and tackling that really stood out. Selected by the Bulldogs at pick 60 in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft, Honeychurch played three AFL games in 2014 after his debut in Round 15 and was part of the Footscray VFL premiership side. It was the second premiership in as many years for Honeychurch who was also part of the 2013 Eastern Ranges premiership team and named in the 2013 TAC Cup Team of the Year was a busy year for Honeychurch. He also averaged 25 disposals and four clearances for Vic Metro during the 2013 NAB AFL Under 18 Championships and earned Under 18 All-Australian honours. Debutants A number of former TAC Cup players have made their AFL debut since Round 1. These include: Former Western Jet now West Coast Eagle Liam Duggan, another former Western Jet and now Hawthorn player James Sicily, Number one draft pick Patrick McCartin (Geelong Falcons), Oakleigh Charger Jake Kelly played his first game for the Crows after a season in the SANFL and Lukas Webb (Gippsland Power) made the trip to Tasmania with the Western Bulldogs. Congratulations to all. Following each round of the home and away season, a panel of judges will select a NAB AFL Rising Star nominee. At the completion of the season, one of these nominees will be chosen as the 2015 NAB AFL Rising Star. The 2015 NAB AFL Rising Star winner will be awarded the Ron Evans Medal and a $20,000 personal investment folio and a dedicated personal banker, courtesy of NAB. 64
