6 FOREWORD The aim of the Annual Report is to enable the Club Committee to report to members, sponsors and other key stakeholders on the performance of the Club over the 2014 football and netball season has been another successful year for the Club. It is a key aim of the Club Committee to improve the management of specific areas where there is an opportunity to do so, and manage all other Club operations to at least the standard of prior seasons. The future of the Club is dependent upon maintaining strong links with our community and offering recreation and leisure opportunities to all members of the Yinnar & district community. It is hoped that this Annual Report demonstrates that the Club is committed to these objectives and all that desire to be involved with the Club are able to participate in some way. Every endeavour has been made to ensure the historical and statistical accuracy of this report. Should any reader be aware of an inaccuracy, or may assist with providing missing information, it would be greatly appreciated if Peter Quigley, Vice President Club Operations is informed. Editor s note: thanks to the many people who contributed photos for the Annual Report. We had hundreds to choose from, which made the task difficult to trim down to a reasonable amount. As a guide, the following took priority for inclusion: Teams playing in grand finals Award winners, at Club and League level Player match milestones Special functions and events Highlights from the year Junior team photos Special thanks to Jess Penny & Leanne Millsom who provided and arranged many of the photos in this report, and to Kate Simmons who helped develop the Annual Report. The Club Committee hopes you find the Annual Report useful and informative reading. Page 6

8 PRESIDENT S REPORT On behalf of the Club Committee, I am extremely pleased to present the Yinnar Football & Netball Club s 131st Annual Report to our life members, members, sponsors and supporters for season An enjoyable evening was had at presentation night, to mark the end of what was another successful season. Congratulations to all the award winners, especially Sonia Williams, who was recognised for the tireless work she does for our Club by taking out the Ross Sewell Memorial Best Club Person award. Lisa Bloomfield, Luke Bremner and Steve Durea were also awarded Life Membership for their many years of dedication to Yinnar Football & Netball Club. One of the many highlights for the Season was the remarkable year our under 16 footballers and under 17 netballers had! Both sides finished the season undefeated and were convincing winners on Grand Final day. Coaches Dave Hibbert and Pauline Couling were justifiably proud of their young teams. Not surprisingly, from those two remarkable teams, we had two league best and fairest winners; Hudson Kerr and Katie Nardino. Congratulations to you both. In addition to the brilliant year these teams had, Yinnar Football & Netball Club was awarded the 2014 Cliff Greenwood MGFL Champion Club trophy at the MGFL presentation night. This trophy is a clear indicator of the type of season the Club has had in both football and netball. This year, we again facilitated a mental health awareness evening for our younger teams (U15/17 netball and U/16 football). The evening was provided by Kempe Read the Play and was a terrific night with fantastic feedback from the kids. With the huge success of Captains Camp last year (a 12 month program, aimed at developing future leaders within the Club), we sent four representatives this season. Eliza Monacella, Hudson Kerr, Jacob Hibbert and Annabelle Linton were our candidates for this year and we know our Club will benefit in the coming years, as these young leaders blossom. Running a successful football and netball club takes hours of hard work from many volunteers. I d now like to acknowledge some outstanding efforts from the year. A huge thanks to all our valued sponsors, who have once again supported the Yinnar Football & Netball Club. Without your financial support, we would not be in a position to offer over 480 members the opportunities we do. Thanks to the Club Executive and Committee for the selfless efforts throughout the year and all other Club volunteers. Without your tireless volunteer work our Club would not remain as viable as it is. With most of our teams (football and netball) playing off in the finals, a huge thank you must go out to all the players, coaches and their support teams. This season, our facilities were looking the best they ever have! The outstanding work performed by the Yinnar Recreation Reserve Committee of Management ensures that we have the best kept facilities in the league. If at all possible, the Thursday night ladies improved their contribution to the Club with an amazing performance! Averaging more than 75 meals every Thursday night (with over 100 on Thursday before Grand Final), these ladies improve the atmosphere enormously! Thanks again to our wonderful group of Past Players who continue to from Peter Linton, Club President perform a number of tasks around the Club, helping out with match day bar, raffles, reserves umpiring, certificates for senior debutantes and, of course the hugely successful Premiership reunions. Every one of the individuals that willingly gives of their time to the Club, does so to ensure an opportunity is given for all in Yinnar and district to participate in recreational pursuits within a family atmosphere. We at Yinnar Football & Netball Club strive to improve ever year, both on and off the field / court and I extend a thank you to everybody who has assisted us this year. The Yinnar Football & Netball Club hopes you have enjoyed season 2014 and we look forward to your continued support in preparation for a successful season Club President Peter Linton and Under 17 Netball Premiership Coach Pauline Couling Hudson Kerr & Kaity Nardino league best & fairest winners Page 8

25 Strategies to support achievement of Club Aims The Club has six key aims on which guide the Committee in its decision making throughout the season. As part of its planning process and as an input to the Annual Operating Plan, the Committee determined a number of strategies that supports achievement of the Club aims. These are as follows: 1. Maximise recreation and leisure opportunities for the people of the Yinnar & district community. The Club will ensure that it fields the highest number of football & netball teams at all levels to maximise participation. Entry level development programs such as Auskick and Netta will be conducted and supported to provide a non competitive pathway into junior and senior grades. Membership packages will be designed to cater for people of all ages to be Club members at lowest possible cost. 2. Promote, encourage and foster the games of Australian football and netball within our community. The Club will actively promote, publicise and encourage the achievements of our Club and players within the community. Development initiatives will be linked to those of parent organisation and development bodies to enable a consistent approach to furthering football and netball within the community. 3. Provide an enjoyable, comfortable, safe and rewarding environment for all people associated with the Club. The Club will operate 100% smoke free facilities. Alcohol will be managed responsibly to ensure a family friendly Club environment. A range of codes of conduct will assist in creating an appropriate Club environment and ensures appropriate behaviours for all involved in the Club. The Club will support, recognise and reward its volunteers. 4. To be a leader in football and netball management so that the long term success and stability of football and netball within the Yinnar community is assured. Initiatives to strengthen Club administration will be considered and implemented as part of the annual planning cycle. Where appropriate, the Club will be a partner in innovative programs available through government and parent bodies both on and off the field. The Cub will have in place a range of policies, and make operational decisions, that take into account its long term development, stability and success. 5. Ensure the development needs of football and netball are met on an ongoing basis so that future senior teams of the Club are generated from within. The Club will implement an annual football & netball development plan that assists in fostering the games within the community. The Club will develop close relationships with local schools and will assist and support them to conduct football and netball activities and matches. 33 We strive to service our sponsors to the highest standards possible and are continually seeking new and improved means of doing so. Our growing list of Sponsors suggests that this aim is being achieved; however the Committee will always seek to improve this service where an opportunity arises. Sponsors businesses and services were promoted to our members, players, supporters and the wider community by a number of differing means. These included: Car bumper stickers Change room Sponsors Board Club Newsletter Ground Entrance signage Oval Fence Signage Letterhead & With Compliments Slips Club Membership Tickets MGFL grand final Spectator advertisement Playing Jumpers logos Primary School Clinics Scoreboard and Coaches Box signage Senior Track Suit Tops logos Social Function Advertising Social Room Signage Weekly Spectator header Club Clothing Weekly Team Sheet banner Weekly incentive awards naming rights Senior team match day windbreak Senior team training jumpers Senior warm up shirts To ensure all sponsors signs are well presented, a significant upgrade project has been completed that now sees all oval fence signs displayed to a very high standard. Thanks to our Major Sponsor Young Signs (Kevin, Liz, Dan & Dean) who have been very supportive in getting all signs in place early in the season. The home change room sponsors signs have been completely overhauled with sponsor s logos replacing the old board which listed business names only. It is now a fresh new professional approach, and we think it looks great! Again, our thanks go to Young Signs. All sponsors fence signage was upgraded over the season, now an impressive display of our sponsors support! Yinnar Football & Netball Club 2014 Annual Report, our 131 st year Page 33

34 RECOGNISING OUR VOLUNTEERS The Club is fortunate to have a large number of people that willingly put up their hand to make sure what needs to be done week in week out through the season does in fact get done. It is the aim of the Club Committee and Sub Committees to recruit, retain and recognise as many volunteers as possible to assist in operation of the Club so as to spread the workload and not place too great a load on any one person, hopefully leading to a longer term involvement from all participating. Some of the ways that the Club recognises our volunteers are: Worker of the Week in the MGFL Spectator Invitations to the Club Annual Luncheon The annual Appreciation Function, held prior to the AGM The Club previously participated in the AFL Volunteer Recognition Program until it ceased being supported by the AFL. The program has now been reinstated and we look forward to again participating in Some of our hard working volunteers these pics highlight the huge effort of our catering and canteen crews who serve up the best food in the League no contest! 35 CAPITAL WORKS, FACILITY & EQUIPMENT IMPROVEMENTS The Club continued its commitment to the upgrade of facilities at the Yinnar Recreation Reserve in partnership with the Committee of Management and other user groups. This will ensure that quality facilities are provided for the benefit of players, members, supporters and the Yinnar community on an ongoing basis. In 1998, the Club established the Facilities & Equipment Improvement Fund to ensure that funds are set aside to provide for future upgrade works. Any operating profit made on an annual basis is put in to the fund, as well as any once off moneys received. The Facilities Improvement Fund was used in 2014 to fund purchase of training lighting for the eastern oval, costing $5,400. This is Stage 1 of the project that will eventually see four towers erected to provide a second high quality training base and assist in spreading the workload on the western oval, partiality during wetter months. 36 YINNAR RECREATION RESERVE The Yinnar Recreation Reserve Committee of Management provides a high standard of facilities for all members, players and supporters to enjoy. The Committee of Management is seen as a progressive group that works to continually improve facilities for user groups and the community. The Club acknowledges and appreciates the work of the Committee of Management, and in particular, the contribution made by Chris Long, Don Barnes, Gordon Lont & Shane Quigley. We also have a band of volunteers that contribute to keeping our facilities and ovals in shape for training and match day. These include (amongst others) Garry Kerr, Greg & Leanne Linton, Brian Renwick, Dean Van Der Meer, Brendan Chessum, Michael Hall, Scott McCafferty, Sophie Gray, Christine Hall, Deidre Buckley, Louise Quigley & Nellie Hutchinson. As part of its responsibility as a user group of the Yinnar Recreation Reserve, the Club must undertake all cleaning and rubbish removal tasks. Thanks to the senior and reserve football players were rostered in teams to complete post match change room cleaning, social room cleaning, and rubbish removal for the whole Reserve. The player s contribution was appreciated, as are all volunteers who contribute to this magnificent facility. The Recreation Reserve Committee of Management have also had a very busy year with a significant number of capital works projects completing, including: Waste & recycling system enables recyclables to be diverted form landfill, halving the Reserve s landfill waste. Completed in partnership with Latrobe City Council & Keep Australia Beautiful. NBN tower siting of a tower in the Reserve has enabled the installation of 3 new training lights for the eastern oval, as well as an all-weather access track enabling oval spectator parking. BBQ refurbishment a complete upgrade with new stainless steel free public BBQ s located in the playground. Septic system upgrade, including new pump and dispersal system and pipes between the system and public toilet block. Front deck mower purchase of a new Kubota front deck ride on mower that keeps the ovals and surrounds immaculate. Special mention to Gordon Lont, Chris Long, Don Barnes & Shane Quigley on this item, seems nobody else can get on the new mower as this team pretty much has every blade of grass in the Reserve covered. Occasionally the PP&O Committee were allowed to watch some footy & netball in between their hard work, here are a few of them trying to understand the netball rules Page 36

37 PAST PLAYERS & OFFICIALS COMMITTEE from Rod Couling, Committee President Once again this year has been another big one for our Committee. We held two reunions, the first being a general reunion for all past players, coaches and officials. We had about 50 guys and girls return to the Club and enjoy a nice a meal and terrific entertainment from former Carlton premiership player Peter Francis. Peter recalled many great stories from his VFL/AFL days while playing with Carlton, St Kilda, Fitzroy and Richmond. Thank you Peter. Thanks also to Nardy and Steve Duffus for cooking the roast beef, as usual, delicious. Our last home game of the year saw our triumphant 2004 senior premiership team and D Grade netball team celebrate their ten year reunions. Celebrations continued well into the night and next day apparently! Good to see the guys haven t lost it in ten years. I remind all those who attended that they are welcome back any time to enjoy our great clubs hospitality. After its success last year, we again presented first game certificates to former junior players who played their first senior football or A grade netball game. Congratulations to Max Renwick and Casey Sherriff on achieving this milestone. I m sure you both have very bright futures with our club. The booth bar on the deck once again proved to be a very popular place to watch the footy. Thanks to all the Committee members who helped out during the year and a special mention to Mick Kearns for setting up most Saturdays. A big thank you to the many regulars (you know who you are) who supported us all year with very generous donations and support of the raffle. While I m on the raffle, thanks also to Steve Van Rooy and his crew on the gate for a fantastic job selling tickets. Special mention also to Shane Quigley for supplying the firewood and Mario Monacella for his donation of many raffle prizes. Later in the year saw the introduction of Wheels Wheel which proved very popular and lucrative for the Past Players and Officials Committee. A big thank you to all who played along adding to a real positive vibe on the deck. Thanks also to Dean (The Wheel) Suares for embracing it with such enthusiasm. It will be back next year (even bigger and better perhaps?). As has been our intent as a Committee from the start, any extra revenue we raise throughout the year will be invested back to our junior footballers and netballers. We have already presented seven bag vouchers to all the top age under 14 footballers which will redeemable upon them playing with the under 16 s next year. A similar donation to junior netball will be made in due course. Again this year we provided umpires for the Reserves. The quality of umpiring this year was outstanding, led by Ken Hutchinson, with fantastic assistance from Dean Suares, David Hibbert, Craig (Bluey) Flanigan, Mario Monacella and Peter Linton. Without these guys volunteering their time we wouldn t have a Reserves competition. Thanks guys for a superb job. Finally, thank you to our Committee, Rod Couling, Shane Quigley, Paul Buckley, Andrew Nardino, Mick Kearns, Dean Suares, Sonia Williams, and Steve Duffus. I know we are a fairly relaxed type of Committee but don t underestimate what we have achieved this year. You should all be proud of your contribution to our great Club. Thank you all and look forward to see you all again next year. At this stage the PP&O AGM will be held on Tuesday 6th October It would be great to see some new faces there so we can form another strong Committee for next year. 38 FOOTBALL OPERATIONS Club football operations performed strongly with many of the seasons highlights detailed in this report. Some of these included: Finals appearances from 5 of the Club teams Increased numbers of players participating in all under age teams (under 10 18) Several appearances in Interleague teams of Club players Strong performance in League goal kicking and best and fairest awards A continued focus on junior development with players progressing through to senior grades The Club Auskick Program growing in numbers, providing an enjoyable introduction to Australian Football for many young boys and girls Thanks are extended to the army of volunteers that make it possible for our 200 plus players to kick the footy and hopefully enjoy the experience every week of the season. Page 38

39 AUSKICK from Matthew Bugeja, Auskick Coordinator It was another big year for Yinnar Auskick with over 25 future stars from Yinnar and surrounding areas participating in The Auskick program is aimed at children 4 to 10 years of age with a focus on fun and safe football activities that give the participants an introduction to the game. This is achieved through activities for individuals, small groups and teams, and aims to assist development of personal and social skills. The season was run during the second school term on Sunday mornings and every week the Auskickers would turn up no matter what the weather was ready have a go. At the start of each session basic skills are practiced one on one with assistance of the Auskickers parents or helper, once warmed up the activities then commence. Amongst the favourite activities were -using the tackle and specky bags, the commando course, cops and robbers and anything to do with kicking goals. Highlight of the season were the 2 grid matches that are played during the half time break of Yinnar senior s football game, the second game was played in wet and muddy conditions but this did not deter the Auskickers and they played the game out in the true spirit of Aussie rules coming off wet and muddy and loving it. The grid games provided an opportunity for the kids to display the skills that they had learnt through the Auskick program in front of a big crowd with great support from both the senior players and spectators. The grid games are much anticipated by the children and parents alike and provide a vital link between the Football & Netball Club and the Auskick program. This link will no doubt provide dividends in the future. Fantastic support was given during the season by parents and it was needed with so many Auskickers, no task was too hard thanks. Thank you to the Club for their continual support of Yinnar s Auskick program. As a Club we are very fortunate to have access to great facilities at the Yinnar Recreation Reserve, it is one of the reasons we can conduct such a successful program in a small town. Our 2014 Auskickers were: Harry Bugeja Tray Cassar Luke Cheffers Billy Durea Harrison Foster Sophie Foster Cooper Gaunt Zekhai Giles Darcy Harwood Isabella Henry Eleanor Henry Amelia Henry Bobby Kanavan Hunter Leahy Tasman Leahy Claire Lindsay Kydan Makepeace Xavier McCafferty Hudson McCulloch Molly Mills Riese Pancutt Miller Richards Harper Richards Grady Ryan Lukas Seath Caleb Smith Joseph Spark Nathan Welsh Maddison Williams Yinnar Football & Netball Club 2014 Annual Report, our 131 st year Page 39

40 CENTRAL GIPPSLAND JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE TEAMS UNDER 10, UNDER 12 & UNDER 14 from Ken Hutchinson, Club CGJFL Committee President 2014 will go down as a successful season for our 3 CGJFL Teams. Off field this year I was joined by Scott McCafferty as Secretary, who like all volunteers put in many unseen hours making sure we are administratively ready each week. I would also like to thank outgoing Secretary Christine Hall for helping with the transition to our new Committee, Scott and I were both in our roles for the first time, so there were a few teething problems early on, but on the whole our new Committee which included Brian Renwick & Dean Van Der Meer managed to have a successful year. I would like to thank Brian, Scott and Dean for their support all season. To our oval, which was beautifully manicured and marked this year. The oval was presented each week in fabulous condition thanks to the effort of Brian, Dean & Gordon Lont, with the aid of a few helpers along the way. Our Canteen was once again run by Mel Dove, Michelle Wilson, Brooke Gordon & Melissa Chessum. It was the Spice girls second year in the job and they had it running like clockwork in there. I would also like to thank the many rostered parents for helping with their shifts. There are also many thanks to go out to parent helpers for this year, and they are for our field, goal, boundary umpires and the time keepers. This year Sophie Gray, with some help from Christine Hall along the way had the unenviable job of cleaning our public toilets each week and what a great job the ladies did. To our coaches, assistant coaches and team managers for providing a positive environment for our players to participate in each week and to our parents, who supported from the boundary each week. It is a credit to our Club, as our behaviour on and off field this year was faultless. Our Club has had a long history in this area and it is a credit to all. Thank you to the Past Players & Officials Committee for their ongoing support through their presentation of a Club Voucher to our top age Under 14 players. This is a wonderful initiative that will help retain our players, while encouraging them and their parents to transition from junior ranks through to seniors. To the on field, our Under 10 s were coached by Julien Schill this year, with David Piedrafita as his team manager. They had 23 listed players for the year. I would like to commend Julien for doing a fantastic job to teach them the basic skills, while also managing to successfully rotate game time to each player. They finished 6th on the ladder with 6 wins and 6 losses (1 bye). They had to beat the 5th placed side in the final round of the season to claim 5th on the ladder. They lost that game by 10 points and unfortunately missed a finals birth. Our Under 12 boys were once again coached by myself (Ken Hutchinson) with Bec McFarlane again team manager. We had the same scenario in the final round, but managed to win the last game to make 5th on the ladder and we claimed a spot in the elimination final. The boys played really well in that final but lost to a bigger opposition by 17 points. The Under 12 s also had good numbers this year with 25 listed players. We finished the regular season with 7 wins and 6 losses. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Brian Renwick for filling in as coach on the couple of occasions I couldn t make it. Our Under 14 boys had the bare 18 players on the list but struggled for numbers most of the year through injury and unavailability, so I would like to thank the top age Under 12 boys who played 2 games most weeks to provide our Under 14 boys with a game. The side was coached by Matt Bugeja with Tracey McCormack as his team manager. Tracey was upgraded from time keeper to team manager this year when she saw that there was nobody else. Thank you very much Tracey. The boys finish 10th with 3 wins and 10 Losses, but ignoring that they showed that there was still something to be gained out of their season. Page 40

48 MID GIPPSLAND FOOTBALL LEAGUE TEAMS SENIORS, RESERVES, UNDER 18 & UNDER 16 With all four of our teams playing off in the finals series, it was an exciting year for the Club. At the end of the regular season, it was pleasing to see the position of all our teams (either first or second), which indicated the type of year the Club had in A high number of young players playing senior football. As always we thank all our volunteers who assist in getting these sides out onto the field each week. Congratulations to David Hibbert and his all-conquering Under 16 s side! An amazing year, culminated in the team becoming Premiers and Champions. Finishing the home and away season with a percentage of 1000, gives you an indication of their dominance of the competition. Hudson Kerr, the team captain had an outstanding season, winning the Club and League Best & Fairest awards and best on ground in the successful grand final side. Well done, Huddy. Mark Maynard s Under 18 side also had a fantastic season, finishing the home and away season on top of the ladder, just falling short in the preliminary final against a strengthened opponent. Mark and his boys can be proud of their achievement of only losing 2 matches for the home and away season. Glenn Davey took on the Reserves coaching job this year and had a wonderful season, only losing 3 matches for the year. Glenn provided fantastic assistance to Sam McCulloch during the season, sharing a lot of the workload. To make the grand final was a terrific result, and it was good to see the boys fight it out to the end. Sam McCulloch, was once again our senior coach, and we appreciate the professionalism that he brings to the Club. Although we had an extremely solid year on the field, beating every team in the competition, it was disappointing to bow out of the finals race after being in such a dominant position in both our matches. 56 MID GIPPSLAND NETBALL LEAGUE TEAMS A GRADE, B GRADE, C GRADE, D GRADE, UNDER 17, UNDER 15 from Deirdre Buckley, Club MGNA Committee President This year has seen a very successful year for our netball teams, from juniors through to senior sides. We welcomed Patricia Chapman to coach A grade, Leanne Dalton B grade, Gena Flanigan C grade, Donna Hoare D grade, Pauline Couling Under 17 s & Maree Nardino 15 s. These coaches brought a great & enthusiastic feeling to our players and Club with their professionalism, ability to work together and their great netball knowledge that they share amongst them, and this showed by where our teams finished at the end of the home & away season. Our juniors had an exceptional year, with Maree coaching the 15 s these girls learnt so much through the season and were a pleasure to watch and very committed to their netball. They finished second in the home & away season, competing through the finals series through to the preliminary final. A great effort from Maree and the girls. Pauline Couling coached the 17 s this season, these girls were a very committed and enthusiastic side, this team went through the season undefeated and finished the season by winning the grand final as Premiers & Champions for 2014, what a fantastic effort by Pauline & the girls. Our A grade side coached by Patricia Chapman had a great year, these girls were so committed to their netball and leaders for the Club throughout the whole season finishing 3rd. They played an amazing final series making it through to the premiership final. B grade coached by Leanne Dalton, was a very committed and determined side, finishing 3rd, they played a great finals series making it through to the prelim final. C grade welcomed Gena Flanigan as their coach, and what a great job Gena did this year with her girls finishing 5th, these girls played great netball finals and made it through to the 1st semi-final. D grade were coached by Donna Hoare again this year, they had a very consistent year, with new girls coming to the Club and forming a great side. Our netballers cannot be successful on the court if it wasn t for our coaches, their commitment to training nights and game days is amazing, and our Club is very lucky to have the high standard of these coaches coaching our players, this showed at the end of our season with 5 teams in the finals. Thank you to the team managers who assist our coaches either training nights, game days or both. The Club is very fortunate to have had players play in Regional & State League from 15 s through to A grade, a great asset and achievement. A very special thankyou to Katie Vary (Secretary, Umpire Co-ordinator) and Janelle Szkwarek (Treasurer, Score Secretary) these ladies are amazing and do a lot of work for our netball teams. Thank you to our group of umpires - this is a tireless job every week, with players coaches and crowds complaining about umpiring, but they do a great job! So thanks to Janelle Szkwarek, Katie Vary, Rachelle Chapman, Madi Hutchinson, and Anne Huggins, the Club appreciates your continuing support. A club cannot function professionally without the help of volunteers, a special thank you to our Committee leaders Lou Quigley (Vice President), Katie Vary (Secretary/Umpire Co-ordinator) Janelle Szkwarek (Treasurer/Score Secretary) and to our Committee Sonia Williams, Nicole Holt, Sue Webster, Jayne Quigley thanks for your contribution in To all the parents, friends etc. that have filled water bottles, swept courts, scored or have helped in the canteen, the netballers and Committee thank you.
