Jennifer Boulden Program Administrator
The USA Hockey SafeSport program was developed to give all participants (and their parents) confidence that they are playing our sport in the safest possible environment, both on and off the ice. USA Hockey has implemented policies addressing certain types of abuse and misconduct, and certain policies intended to reduce, monitor and govern the areas where potential abuse and misconduct can occur.
Sexual Abuse Physical Abuse Emotional Abuse Bullying, Threats and Harassment Hazing Locker room, social media, and travel guidelines USA Hockey is committed to creating a safe and positive environment for its participants physical, emotional, and social development and to ensuring that it promotes an environment free from abuse and misconduct. USA Hockey has ZERO TOLERANCE policy regarding all forms of abuse and/or misconduct.
Coaching Style Structure/Plan of Game Play Distribution of Playing Time Player Position Assignments Disputes between parent/player expectations and coaches expectations Incidents that occur outside the realm of NPHA activities (i.e. neighborhood, school, etc.) Please Note: Issues not related to abuse or misconduct are treated as grievances between parties. Procedures for addressing grievances are defined in the NPHA handbook. Please refer to this document for more information.
SafeSport guidelines apply to all participants: parents, players, coaches and community members. Players should not enter a locker room until a coach/locker room supervisor is present. NO electronic devices are allowed in locker rooms (i.e. ipods, phones, cameras, etc.). Mixed gender teams will plan for separate changing times. Locker rooms must be secured while players are on the ice.
Any misconduct on the part of a participant/s that violates these guidelines will be reported immediately and investigated by the NPHA SafeSport Coordinator with collaboration from the District 6 SafeSport Coordinator and/or the MN Hockey SafeSport Coordinator. Misconduct that allegedly violates any legal statute (i.e. sexual abuse) will immediately be referred to local law enforcement agencies and NPHA SafeSport involvement will be suspended pending the outcome of the local law enforcement s investigation. A report made in bad faith may result in disciplinary action for the participant filing the allegation.
Abuse or misconduct is not limited to interactions between coaches and their players. Any incidents of abuse or misconduct on the part of players towards their coaches are reportable as well. Watch for abuse or misconduct among players and ensure that participants are being safe and respectful of one another at all times (ice, dryland, lobby, etc.). Guidelines apply to all participants within the association, even those who are not directly involved in the coaching or playing of the game.
Administrators within the NPHA Coaches Players Parents Volunteers Managers Locker Room Monitors
Temporary Suspension Permanent Suspension Removal from all NPHA sponsored events Referral to law enforcement authorities Legal charges Permanent criminal record
NPHA SafeSport Coordinator, Jennifer Boulden: (952) New Prague Police Department: 911 or (952) Scott County Human Services: (952) Note: A mandated reporter who knows or has reason to believe that a child is or has been neglected or physically/sexually abused and fails to report is guilty of a misdemeanor.
HOCKEY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE (HDC) The Hockey Development committee oversees: Coach selection Tryouts Mite placements Coach training Dry land room use Coach handbook Tournament selection Fall clinics Spring clinics Learn to Skate program Mite Sub committee Hockey development Committee is made up of: NPHA VP (Brent Dorzinski) NP high school boys and girls coaches NPHA mite committee chair (Andy Blair) Association coaches and those with a hockey background. HDC Chair (David Zack)
Hockey Development Committee Members: Chair Nate Pickens Board rep Jason Ashley Crystal Dohlman Secretary Joe Franck Matt Peterson Bruce Illies Dan Witty Ryan Hagen Brad Breeggemann - Mite Coord Joe Berry Brad Drazan Seth Kulics Sara Westing Tom Huber Steve Kartak Joel Barzee Steve Debus - Goalie Coach Coach Ries - NP girls Varsity Coach Lonke - NP boys Varsity Good cross section with reps from all levels
Tryouts What you need to know to survive them! NPHA establishes teams based on USA Hockey and Minnesota Hockey age groups and ability levels (A,B,C) All USA Hockey affiliates in Minnesota follow the same age groups and ability levels; which are different than Wisconsin, North Dakota, and Canada NPHA uses non parent, hockey educated evaluators to place players on the appropriate teams
Why place kids based on ability? Place kids at a level in which they can have an equal amount of success and failure theoretically Encourages your player to enjoy the game, Keeps them engaged. Kids have fun at all levels, if they have the support of parents, coaches, and association
What is the timing of tryouts (Squirts - Bantams) Schedule 10/5 through 10/9 See website, newsletter, and mass s for times and dates Evaluators rate each player, each session, for first 2-3 sessions Begin to establish bubble players lists that are stacked up at the AB or BC team splits Create pools for levels with 4 or more teams projected Pools will be posted after the Saturday session for squirts (if we have enough players for 4 teams) HDC recommends teams and coaches to the Board at the 10/12 board meeting for approval Final tryout date is Monday 10/9 Teams posted on evening of 10/11 Begin skating as a team on 10/13 or 10/14
Projected Teams for bantam teams (A,B2) 3 peewee teams (A,B2,C) 1-12U team (B) 4 squirt teams (A,B,C,C) 1 10U team (B) 12 mite teams, 1-8U team MITES/8U We will be having a parent meeting just for Mites. Look for details in mass s, newsletter and on the website! Placements will take place in November, First ice will be November 4 th. Teams to be finalized by November 15 th. No full ice games before Jan 1 st new last year
Frequently Asked Questions regarding tryouts Who Evaluates Tryouts? New Prague High School Varsity Coaches, head and assistants HDC members who don t have players at that level fill in when High School coaches cannot attend
Frequently Asked Questions regarding tryouts Why can t parents watch from the bleachers? Evaluators have a lot of players to evaluate in a short period time, they need as few distractions as possible. We are trying to eliminate as many outside distractions and influences as possible for the players. Tryouts are stressful for all those involved; players, parents, evaluators, and HDC members. It makes the process less stressful for all with fewer people in the arena.
Frequently Asked Questions regarding tryouts What is the actual process of scoring? Evaluators score each player in 4-5 categories, the first 2-3 sessions In sessions 3 and 4, bubble groups are established Bubble groups are those players at the lower end of one team and top end of the next highest team. Cumulative scoring is used. Generally speaking, on the final day of tryouts, evaluators are looking at only the bubble kids and kids that missed a session Past and present coaches help make final decisions on bubble kids.
New for Last year: District 6 Squirts As of today, the plan is to run an unbalanced Schedule for Squirt A for this year. District 6 is not participating in the Tournament of Champions or the Squirt State tourney.
Keeping things in perspective: Balance is a MUST! Keep long term health and happiness of your child in mind at all times helps keep perspective Hockey (sports) help develop your son/daughter as a well rounded person Your hockey experience is a journey, enjoy the journey. The journey is the reward. Help minimize the Rumor Mill in the lobby by not participating. Ask someone who should know (Board or HDC member) Hockey is just part of your child s youth sports and education experience Encourage participation in other sports makes for a well rounded athlete
Why District 6? Travel time Competition Where else?
Ice Coordinator Tyler Kienow o Games will be played at NPACC o Length of game is determined by District 6 o We will have some ice at Total Hockey-Lakeville o Squirt, 10U, Peewee and 12U have morning ice Use it! o Outdoor ice times will be scheduled o Ice time is very limited in January (High School games) o I will schedule Dryland and Classrooms for each team if requested o Go by the Association website for ice time, not the arena. If you do notice a difference let your Manager know. o If you have any questions about ice time talk to your Manager and they can contact me!
Manager Coordinator Connection to Coaches and Parents Collect forms, schedule scrimmages and referees, organize team events, update team page on website, etc positions available The 22 volunteer hours are waived Interested in being a team manager? 41 Deposit Against Volunteer Hours Second year Bantams and 12U players are required to submit a $200 personal check dated 5/01/2017 payable to NPHA, as a deposit against each family s volunteer hours, unless your family is exempt from fulfilling the required 22 volunteer hours per the handbook. If you have a question regarding whether or not your family is exempt, please contact the Treasurer Derek Schmidt (460diesel@gmail.com) Checks must be received by the Treasurer at/before Try-outs, or your skater(s) will not be allowed on the ice. The NPHA Treasurer will hold this check until 5/01/2018. If you have not completed your required hours by 4/15/2018, your check will be deposited. If you owe less than $200, you will receive a refund for the difference. If you owe more than $200, you will receive an invoice for the balance due.
Fundraising David Hansen The NPHA fundraisers generate a significant amount of income for NPHA, which is used to keep registration fees as low as possible. Roughly 47% of total revenue for NPHA comes from Fundraising.
Fundraising 1. Christmas Wreaths, Cookie Dough, Heggies Pizza Each family is required to sell a total $ per player or $ per family. Buyout of $350 for a single player or $450 per family All Orders Due: TBD Wreath pickup will be mid-november Cookie Dough and Heggies Pizza pickup will be at the rink TBD *Waiver of this fundraiser for new families to NPHA and the Sport of Hockey and Junior Gold.
Fundraising Q: What if I fall short of the required amount to sell? A family has 2 kids in hockey. They opted to fundraise, a $900 commitment. They sold: $250 in Wreaths $350 in Cookie Dough and Heggies Pizza Total $600 A: NPHA profits 50% of fundraising sales and the buyout for a family is $450. The family came up $300 short so their invoice would be $150. Any outstanding balances would be due no later than October 22 nd when the orders are due or the players will not be allowed to participate.
Fundraising 2. Raffle Calendar Fundraiser MANDATORY Each family is required to sell a minimum of 15 calendars The cost of the calendar is $20 each and are paid for in your registration which can be spread out over 5 months if you choose.
