Stiles Award, 1990 att Kerwick 90 returned to his alma mater in 2001 and has had a considerable impact on the lives of Hobart men during his tenure. In five seasons, he has led the Statesmen to their 24th and 25th NCAA Tournament appearances and a second conference championship, while mentoring 20 all-conference selections and the 2005 ECAC Rookie of the Year. One of the rising stars in lacrosse coaching circles, Kerwick was an assistant coach for the U.S. National Team at the 2006 International Lacrosse Federation World Championship. The Americans brought home the silver medal. Last season, his Statesmen got off to a 3-0 start and ended the season with a 6-8 mark against a challenging schedule that included four NCAA Tournament teams. The highlight of the season was a 9-8 victory over eventual national semifinalist Syracuse in the Carrier Dome. The triumph returned the Kraus-Simmons Trophy to Geneva for the first time since In 2005, Kerwick guided the Statesmen through their first season in the ultra-competitive ECAC League. Individually, senior defenseman Greg McCarthy became the first Statesman named to the Tewaaraton Award preseason watch list and the first two-time All-American for Hobart since the program moved to Division I in 1995, while first-year Daryl Veltman was named the league s Rookie of the Year after scoring a team-leading 50 points. In 2004, Kerwick and the Statesmen finished second in the Patriot League regular season and tournament standings. Hobart received its second at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament on the strength of a 9-6 record that included wins over No. 9 Cornell and No. 13 Army. During his first season, Kerwick guided the Statesmen to the Patriot League crown and was named the league s Coach of the Year. In 11 seasons as a collegiate head coach, Kerwick sports a career record of for a.552 winning percentage. Kerwick returned to his alma mater following three seasons as an assistant coach at Georgetown University. With the Hoyas, he served as the offensive coordinator. Georgetown earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament in each of Kerwick s three seasons, advancing to the semifinals in 1999 for the first time in the program s history. During his tenure, the Hoyas were 36-9 (.800) and 3-3 in the postseason, including a first round win over Cornell on Hobart s Boswell Field in Prior to his time in Washington, Kerwick spent three seasons as the head coach of the Alfred University lacrosse program. Under his leadership, the Saxons reached the postseason each year, earning a spot in the 1997 NCAA Tournament field and 1996 and 1998 ECAC Upstate New York Tournament berths. Alfred was (.595) in his three seasons. A two-time Super Six Lacrosse League Coach of the Year, Kerwick was named the 1997 Babe Kraus Division III Coach of the Year. Kerwick moved to Alfred following one season as an assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to his stint with the Quakers, he spent three seasons as the head coach at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va. Kerwick led the Yellow Jackets to a record (.659), at the time the three most successful seasons in the program s history. As a player for the Statesmen, he was a member of four Division III National Championship teams, was a two-time USILA All-American, and earned the 1989 NCAA Tournament MVP Award. He was also a four-year letterwinner on the Hobart hockey team, serving as a captain for both squads during his senior year. He capped off his collegiate career with the William C. Stiles 43 Award, given to the Hobart senior student-athlete for leadership, determination, and character. In addition to collegiate lacrosse, Kerwick played in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League from 1991 through He was a two-time recipient of the Baltimore Thunder s Unsung Hero Award (1991 and 92) and was an All-Star selection in Kerwick and his wife, Mary, live in Geneva with their sons, Thomas and Sean. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS: 1972, 1976, 1977, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993

3 Assistant Coaches T.W. Johnson T.W. Johnson returns for his third season as the Statesmen s top assistant coach. He joined the Hobart staff following three seasons as the head coach at Limestone College. During his tenure with the Saints, Johnson posted an impressive record of 41-7 (.854), including a perfect 19-0 in Deep South Conference play and 9-0 in the Deep South Tournament. The 2004 Babe Kraus Division II Coach of the Year led Limestone to three consecutive conference championships and three straight NCAA Division II Championship games, including the 2002 title. Johnson mentored 22 All-Deep South selections, including three straight Deep South Players of the Year. He also coached 16 USILA All-Americans, including two Division II Players of the Year. Prior to his time at Limestone, Johnson served as an assistant coach at Lynchburg College for five years, helping the Hornets to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in A native of Chesapeake, Va., Johnson is a 1996 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College, where he earned a bachelor s degree in history. The three-year starting defenseman served as team captain as a senior. In 1995, he led the Tigers to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship and an NCAA Tournament berth. In 1998, he earned a master s degree in education from Lynchburg. Johnson lives in Geneva with his wife, Elizabeth, and their daughter, Abigail. Jim Morrissey Jim Morrissey joined the Hobart coaching staff in the fall of A former assistant coach at Syracuse and Cornell, Morrissey was a two-time All-American as a player for the Syracuse Orange. We re excited to have Jim as a part of the Hobart family, Head Coach Matt Kerwick said. His knowledge of the game through his experiences as a player at the highest level of collegiate and professional lacrosse and as a coach at two of the best in the game will make an immediate impact with the players. Morrissey began his coaching career with a single season stint at Cornell, before returning to his alma mater prior to the 1999 season. As a member of the SU coaching staff, he helped the Orange to a 12-5 record and a national runner up finish in his first season. In 2000, Morrissey and Syracuse ran up a 15-1 record and captured the national championship. He left coaching following that season, spending the next six years in corporate sales. No stranger to championship rings, Morrissey won two titles as an attackman for the Orange in 1993 and A two-time honorable mention All-American, Morrissey represented Syracuse in the 1996 North-South All-Star Classic, capping a career that saw him score 106 goals and earn 70 assists. He graduated from Syracuse in 1996 with a bachelor s degree in political science. In addition to his collegiate playing experience, Morrissey played three seasons in the indoor National Lacrosse League with the Syracuse Smash. In 15 career games, he registered nine goals and 21 assists and collected 51 loose balls. Morrissey also spent two seasons with the Rochester Rattlers of the outdoor Major League Lacrosse. Terry Muffley Now in his fifth season as a volunteer assistant coach for the lacrosse team, Terry Muffley boasts more than three decades of coaching experience. He also has served as the defensive line coach for the Hobart football team for the past eight seasons. With the lacrosse team, Muffley works primarily with the team s faceoff specialists. This season, he ll have one of the most potent duos in college lacrosse, 2005 preseason All-American John Soden and two-time Vail Lacrosse Shootout All-Tournament faceoff specialist Dan Spinella. On the gridiron, Muffley has helped the Statesmen to five conference championships, five NCAA Tournament apperances, and the 2003 ECAC North Atlantic Bowl Championship. A veteran high school coach, Muffley was a fixture on the Geneva High School sidelines for more than two decades, assisting the Panthers lacrosse team to three Section V Championships and the football team to two league titles, as well as coaching the volleyball team and assisting with the basketball team. Muffley earned a bachelor s degree from East Stroudsburg University, and holds a master s degree in education from SUNY-Oswego. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps with service in Vietnam, Muffley recently retired following nearly 30 years as a teacher in the Geneva City School District. He lives in Geneva with his wife, Cindy. They have two children, Patrick and Bess. NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES: 1974, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 98, 2000, 02, 04

4 Season Outlook even hundred wins. With a 12-7 win over St. John s on April 22, 2006, the Hobart College lacrosse program joined an elite fraternity in the men s lacrosse world. The Statesmen joined Johns Hopkins and Syracuse universities as the only collegiate men s lacrosse teams to post 700 wins. A journey that began with a 2-1 victory over Cornell way back in 1898, captured 16 national championships along the way, and culminated with that historic win is now ancient history for the latest edition of the Purple and Orange. Head Coach Matt Kerwick and his charges are focused squarely on the 2007 schedule the program s 105th season and the slate of foes that includes four 2006 NCAA Tournament teams. Hobart s players and coaches are approaching each game as if it were a championship game. We want the guys to think of every game as a championship game, Kerwick, who is entering his sixth season at Hobart, said. We re not going to play up games more than others, because they re all so competitive now that you have to be ready to play each game. We ve got to go out and play our best each week. The 15-game schedule begins Feb. 18, in the Carrier Dome, the site of the Statesmen s biggest triumph in Hobart reclaimed the Kraus-Simmons Trophy for the first time since 1986 thanks to a 9-8 victory over the Orange. Kerwick knows SU, which rebounded from a slow start to reach the national semifinals, will be a big early season test. We know that we don t have time to relax and try to ease into our schedule because we re going to play one of the top four teams in the country. It ll be a good barometer for us. After the team s showdown at Syracuse the Statesmen will play Bucknell in Baltimore, then be at home for eight of its next 11 games, including four in a row between March 13 (Marist) and March 31 (Fairfield). With the quality of competition at an all-time high in Division I lacrosse, Hobart s home-game heavy schedule could be a key factor in the Statesmen s success this season. Here s a position-by-position look at the Statesmen: ATTACKMEN Junior Daryl Veltman is the only starter returning to an attack that ranked 24th in the nation in scoring (9.5 gpg), but the coaching staff is excited by the development of sophomore Jeff Colburn and the arrival of transfer Jamie Kirk. An All-ECAC second team pick, Veltman led the team with 22 goals and 31 points last season. He begins the season with 81 career points (50 goals), already eighth in career scoring among Division I Statesmen. Colburn produced 12 points (5-7) as a first-year with half of them coming in the final four games of the season. His improvement down the stretch has him poised for a breakthrough season. Kirk joins the Statesmen following two seasons at the University of Vermont where he scored 64 points and finished second in the America East and eighth in the nation in assists last season. Together this trio will allow Hobart to play at a much higher tempo than last season. Any one of the three can score and they all have great vision to set up their teammates goals. Sophomore Sam Orr and first-years Kevin Curtin, Daniel Keegan, Doug Shiver, and Kenny Burst will provide depth this season and the foundation for future potent attacks. MIDFIELDERS Hobart s biggest strength entering this season will be at the faceoff X, where the Statesmen feature, not one, but two All- American caliber specialists. Senior John Soden and junior Dan Spinella combined to win 55.8 percent of their restarts, 12th in the nation last season. At 439, Soden is just 20 wins behind Tim Booth 03, who sports the most wins since the program moved to Division I. Meanwhile, Spinella begins the year with the highest career winning percentage (.574) after ranking fourth in the nation in Daryl Veltman is the second fastest Division I Hobart player to 50 goals through two seasons (.618, 97 of 157). The top midfield of senior Chris David and juniors Nick Currie and co-captain Sean Murphy account for three of the Statesmen s top five scorers last season. David is a pure goal scorer who enters the season eighth in career goals by Division I Statesmen (51). Currie enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2006, finishing second to Veltman with 27 points. He scored what proved to be the game-winner against the Orange. Murphy too dodged the sophomore jinx, raising his scoring total from eight points in 2005 to 21 last year. The competition for the second and third midfield lines is fierce. Seniors James Dussich and Justin Porter are the veterans of the bunch. Dussich played in a careerhigh 10 games a year ago and showed some offensive pop with goals against Canisius, Hartford, UMass, and Rutgers. Despite bouncing from the midfield to attack and back, Porter is in superb shape and ready for the grind of a long season. Junior Jimmy Farmer switched from a d-middie to a regular midfielder last sea- NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS: 1972, 1976, 1977, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993

5 Season Outlook son and was slow to switch gears, but he began to hit his stride as the season drew to a close, notching his first goal against third-ranked Cornell. The midfield will welcome a pair of sophomore transfers Jake Lecky, from Ohio State, and Will Harrington, from Maryland. Lecky, who saw action in only two games for the Buckeyes, was the 2005 New Jersey Midfielder of the Year for the state champion Summit Hilltoppers. Harrington played in just three games for the 12-5 Terps, but was an exceptional athlete at Friends School in Baltimore, lettering in both lacrosse and football. Coach Kerwick calls the Class of 2010 his best recruiting class to date and Exhibit A is the wealth of first-year talent in the midfield. Tyler Cassell, Mike Lazore, and Mike Suits are all expected to have a big impact on Hobart s fortunes this season. Cassell comes to Hobart via the Salisbury School where he played for Hobart Hall of Famer Bobby Wynne 94 and was rated one of the top midfielders in the country by Inside Lacrosse. Suits and Lazore are both Central New York natives and earned a silver medal together in the 2005 Empire State Games. Sophomore Matt Smalley and classmate Jamie Sprague will serve as Hobart s primary d-middies. Smalley was second on the team and 27th in the nation in ground balls a year ago, proving to be a vital link in the team s success on faceoffs. Sprague is a hard worker and tough checker. Senior Matt Ranaghan will have big shoes to fill. Moving from close defense to long-stick midfielder, he ll be asked to step into the role vacated by the graduation of Andrew Narog (71 GBs, 14th in DI). Ranaghan will be backed up by sophomore Chris Hurley and first-year Garrett O Neill. Hurley has made steady progress this spring, while Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School product O Neill (6-foot-5, 210) is one of a long list of talented rookies ready to make an impact. DEFENSEMEN Last season, Hobart s defense held the opposition to eight goals or fewer eight times. With a core group of returnees and a strong influx of talent, the Statesmen hope to build on that success in 07. Senior co-captain Chris Keough and junior Rafe Mattingly form the nucleus of the Hobart close defense. Keough is a speedy, takeaway artist with 119 ground balls to his credit, while Mattingly is Hobart s best one-on-one defender. There s a three-way battle for the remaining starting nod among senior Wesley McDonald, sophomore Ricky Evans, and first-year Adam Del Preore. McDonald played in a career-high nine games last season and responded with solid play. Evans made an immediate impact last season (13 games), and even showed a flair for the offensive game, sneaking forward for an assist at Canisius. Del Preore Hobart s No. 2 scorer in 2006, Nick Currie will start in the midfield again in Senior co-captain Chris Keough (#8) will lead the defense this season. was an All-State selection last season at Moorestown (N.J.) High School after collecting 73 ground balls and nine assists. Sophomore Justin Hager and firstyear Neal Brown will add depth to the unit. GOALIES The biggest question mark for Hobart is in the cage. Mike DeSantis (9.66 career GAA) graduated, leaving Hobart with less than 67 minutes of collegiate playing experience. Sophomore Brad Hester the most experienced contender with 54:10 in the cage last season is the early front-runner in a wide-open contest. Called on in three games as a first-year, he showed poise and confidence despite two of those contests being already in hand for the opposition. Hester will be challenged by first-year Max Silberlecht and senior Brandon Baer. Silberlecht is a mountain in the cage (6-foot-3, 230) that invokes memories of Hall of Famer Guy Van Arsdale 83 and Freddy Pawlikowski 98, both in terms of his size and his prowess between the pipes, while Baer has turned heads with his improved play this spring. The pieces are in place for a 26th NCAA Tournament, but the Statesmen will need to stay focused and play each game like its a championship game, bringing a full-throttle effort every day.
