The teams first met in 1985 with the Statesmen securing a win in Baltimore. Hobart posted another one-goal win the following season in Geneva (14-13), but have dropped seven straight to the Hounds since. WHEN LAST WE MET: On April 29, 2006, Hobart lost a hard-fought 11-6 ECAC contest to visiting Loyola on Boswell Field. Greyhound Paul Richards produced a game-high four points, while Ryan Rabidou and Cory Coffman each added three goals. Daryl Veltman, and Nick Currie each registered two points for the Statesmen. Hobart netted the game s first goal, just 88 seconds in, but Loyola responded with four unanswered and seven of the next eight to break open the game. FOURTH QUARTER COMEBACK: For the first time this season, the Statesmen overcame a fourth quarter deficit to post a victory. On Tuesday, Hobart trailed Canisius 10-9, but scored twice in the final minutes to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Senior James Dussich, playing his final home game, picked a great time to produce his first career multi-goal game. He netted a pair of extra-man goals, the last of which put the Statesmen in front with 2:11 remaining. The defense held down the stretch to ice the victory over the Golden Griffins. EXTRA! EXTRA!: The Statesmen began the week fourth in the nation in extra-man scoring and improved their standings with a 4-for-4 showing against Canisius. Entering today s contest, Hobart has converted on 55.6 percent (20-36) of its extra-man opportunities this season. Hobart s extra-man unit has not been this productive since the program moved to Division I in The current DI standard for a season was set by the 1999 squad (.453, 29-64). SOMETHING S GOTTA GIVE: While Hobart has excelled in man-up situations this season, Loyola s man-down defense has been correspondingly stingy. Ranked ninth in the nation, the Greyhounds have allowed just eight extra-man goals, while killing off 29 tries by the opposition (.784). GOAL TIME: In the fastest game on two feet, Hobart is running in the lead pack in scoring. The Statesmen s goals per game began the week eighth in Division I and tops in the ECAC through games of April 22. CANADIAN CONNECTION: Canadian imports Jamie Kirk and Daryl Veltman have teamed up to score 24 goals this season (20 Veltman from Kirk and 4 Kirk from Veltman). The former high school teammates at the Salisbury School also play together for the Orangeville Northmen in the Ontario Junior A Summer Lacrosse League. FEEDER PROGRAM: Junior attackman Jamie Kirk leads the nation with 36 assists. That s nearly twice as many as the next player in the conference (Loyola s Shane Koppens has 21). Kirk boasts 48 percent of Hobart s helpers this season. BROKEN record: Speaking of Kirk, in Hobart s victory over then 17th-ranked Fairfield, he handed out four assists, breaking the season record

BEAM ME UP: How fast is Jamie Kirk climbing Hobart s assist lists? In just 12 games, the transfer from Vermont is already seventh among Division I Statesmen in CAREER assists with 36. At his present pace of 3.0 helpers per game, Kirk would crack the all-time top 10 by the end of next season. CLEAR DIFFERENCE: Hobart s ability to ride Loyola could be a key factor in today s game. In their five wins this season, the Statesmen are riding the opposition 33.9 percent of the time. In seven defeats, Hobart has ridden its opponents just 12.8 percent of the time. DOWN WITH DEFENSE: Another key to success could be Hobart s man-down defense. When the Statesmen win, they ve limited the opposition to a 20.0 success rate with the extra-man (5-25), but in defeat, their opponents extra-man production jumps to 41.7 percent (10-24). For the season, Loyola is 18th in the nation in extra-man offense (.333, 16-48). SINGLE DIGITS: When the Hobart defense holds the opposition to nine goals or less, the Statesmen are 29-8 (.784) under Head Coach Matt Kerwick. fastest to the mark: With his first goal of the game against Marist, Daryl Veltman became the fastest Hobart player to record 100 career points since the program moved to Division I in He scored 103 points in his first 32 games as a Statesmen. Nathan Roost 98 was the previous standard, recording his 100th point in his 33rd game. WELCOME TO THE CLUB: Hobart is one of only three collegiate lacrosse programs to reach the 700-win plateau. (Johns Hopkins and Syracuse are the other two.) The Statesmen have an all-time record of (.629). COACH K: Head Coach Matt Kerwick is in his sixth season at the helm of his alma mater s lacrosse program. The 2002 Patriot League Coach of the Year has a record at Hobart and is in 11 seasons as a head coach, including three-year stints at Alfred University and Randolph-Macon College. Last summer, Kerwick served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Lacrosse team that earned a silver medal at the ILF World Championship. OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN: Senior defenseman Chris Keough and junior midfielder Sean Murphy will serve as co-captains for the 2007 season. DOUBLE DUTY: Two Statesmen play more than one sport at Hobart. 5 2007 GAME RECAPS #25 Hobart vs #3 Syracuse (Feb 18, 2007 at Syracuse, N.Y.) Four unanswered goals late in the fourth quarter saved the third-ranked Syracuse lacrosse team from a second straight loss to Hobart. The Orange rallied from an 11-9 hole to post a victory in front of 5,252 fans at the Carrier Dome, reclaiming the Kraus-Simmons Trophy. Daryl Veltman and Jeff Colburn led the Statesmen with two goals and two assists each. Attackman Dan Hardy paced the Orange with three goals and two assists. Nick Currie gave Hobart the early lead, scoring on the game s first shot just 30 seconds in with a laser from the right side of goalie Peter Coluccini (13 saves). Senior Brandon Baer stopped the first two shots he faced, before Syracuse countered with back-to-back goals. Baer turned in a spectacular first start in the cage, recording 15 saves, including several from point-blank. It was back and forth affair that saw the lead change hands five times. Colburn s second score with 13:17 remaining put Hobart on top 11-9, but it proved to be the final score of the contest for the Statesmen. Hobart held an 11-9 advantage on faceoffs entering the fourth quarter, but Syracuse turned things around in the final frame, winning five of six at the X. Dan Spinella won 12 of 26 restarts. The Statesmen had a advantage on ground balls, led by Matt Smalley and Matthew Ranaghan with seven apiece. Jamie Kirk recorded a game-high eight points, the most since Daryl Veltman produced eight points at Canisius last season. Kirk dished out seven assists, including four feeds to Veltman, who finished with six goals, the most by a Hobart player since Feb. 23, 2003, when John Bogosian 03 netted six against Butler. Bogosian was also the last Hobart player to hand out seven helpers (March 24, 2001, vs. Lehigh). Dan Spinella dominated the faceoff X, winning 17 of the game s 25 restarts, including all 10 in the second quarter, while Matt Smalley collected a game-high 11 ground balls, many of them on faceoffs, leading the Statesmen to a advantage in that category. Smalley s total is the most by a Hobart player since Tim Booth 03 recorded 11 against Lehigh on March 22, Bucknell carried a 9-8 lead into the fourth quarter, but with 12:02 remaining in regulation, the final Kirk to Veltman feed tied the game. Hobart claimed its final lead of the day with 86 seconds remaining when Veltman finished a feed from Nick Currie. 7 2007 GAME RECAPS Marist vs. Hobart (Mar 13, 2007 at Geneva, N.Y.) Daryl Veltman recorded the 100th point of his career while leading the Statesmen to a 10-5 victory over Marist on Mc- Cooey Field. Veltman netted a pair of goals and set up two more to raise his career total to 103 points. The junior needed just three and a half minutes and one shot to reach the 100-point plateau in his 32nd career game. He is the fastest of the sixth Division I Statesmen to reach that milestone, beating Nathan Roost 98 by one game. Hobart outscored the Red Foxes 4-1 in the first quarter and cruised to victory. The Statesmen won all of the major stat categories, outshooting their guests 45-31, collecting more ground balls (43-24), winning more faceoffs (13-6), and clearing at a much higher rate (91.6%-64.2). The Hobart defense was sharp all afternoon, but excelled in man-down situations, killing off all six of Marist s extra-man opportunities. Chris David netted a hat trick for the Statesmen, while Jamie Kirk handed out three assists. Jeff Colburn also contributed three points on two goals and an assist. Matt Smalley collected a game-high seven ground balls for Hobart, while Matt Ranaghan and Dan Spinella each picked up six. Spinella dominated the X, winning 12 of the 16 restarts he took. The Statesmen might have won by a much wider margin if not for Marist goalie Ryan Penner. The sophomore turned back 16 shots and helped his own cause with the second of the Red Foxes two first-half goals. With Hobart employing a 10-man ride, Penner saw Hobart starter Brandon Baer (9 saves) stray too far from his cage. Penner launched a shot from his own restraining box that bounced just inside the crease and hopped up just under the cross bar. Baer played 43 minutes before yielding to Brad Hester and Max Silberlicht, who combined for four saves in relief. A-400 T-1:49 Hobart vs. #7 Georgetown (Mar 18, 2007 at Washington, D.C.) Hobart got a career-high five goals from Nick Currie, but it wasn t enough to upset seventh-ranked Georgetown in the nation s capital. The Hoyas got a five-goal performance from midfielder Dan D Agnes in a victory over the Statesmen. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Geneva on St. Patrick s Day, but a late winter storm forced a 22-hour delay and change of venue. Hobart trailed entering the fourth quarter, but Silver Spring, Md., native Chris David (2 gls) and Currie connected on back-to-back unassisted goals to tie the contest for the seventh and final time. Georgetown answered the surge with consecutive scores of its own by D Agnes and Garrett Wilson to restore the two-goal lead with 9:05 remaining. Daryl Veltman (3 gls) made it a game at the 5:49 mark, depositing a feed from classmate Jamie Kirk, who recorded a game-high six assists. D Agnes put the Hoyas back in front by two with an extraman goal at the 3:27 mark that closed out the day s scoring. Jeff Colburn added two goals and an assist, while GU got significant contributions from Craig O Dowd (4-1), Andrew Baird (2-2), and Andrew Brancaccio (2-0). The Statesmen held a slim advantage in shots, while Georgetown dominated ground balls (45-33) and faceoffs (21-10). GU faceoff specialist Christiaan Trunz (20 of 30 at the X) collected a game-high 12 ground balls, while Matt Ranaghan scooped up seven for Hobart. The Statesmen converted on their lone extra-man opportunity, while Georgetown was 2-of-5 in man-up situations. 8 2007 GAME RECAPS Rutgers vs. Hobart (Mar 24, 2007 at Geneva, N.Y.) Colin Checcio scored 23 seconds into the second overtime to lift Rutgers to a ECAC victory over Hobart. Hobart won the faceoff to start the second OT, but a quick turnover sent the ball in the other direction. Checcio was able to free himself and put home the game-winner from point-blank range, his game-leading fifth of the day. Daryl Veltman led the Statesmen with three goals and an assist, while Chris David added a hat trick of his own. Matt Smalley added a pair of goals and grabbed eight ground balls. For Rutgers, Justin Pennington had two goals and two assists, and won 5-of-6 faceoffs. Michael Hurwitz was 10-of-20 at the X, collected a game-high 10 ground balls, and scored a goal. Hobart won a wide-open second quarter to carry an 8-5 lead into the break. Smalley netted both of his goals in the stanza, the first on a pass that evaded both its intended target and goalie Peter Pantages. The second barely beat the halftime horn. Pantages recorded just two saves in the half. He was replaced by Bill Olin at the start of the third quarter. The substitution energized the Scarlet Knights, who outscored Hobart 4-2 in the frame. Olin allowed just three goals and finished with seven saves. Rutgers scored four of the first five goals of the half, including three unanswered. Checcio sandwiched goals around an extraman tally by Chris Doctor to tie the game at 9-all. Hobart netted another buzzer beater to end the third frame, this time Will Harrington did the honors for his first career goal. Veltman converted Hobart s lone man-up situation to start the fourth quarter to put the home team in front 11-9, but Doctor and Pennington scored late goals to force OT. In the first extra period, Rutgers nearly got the win on a shot by Mike Dugan, but an acrobatic save by Brandon Baer, his ninth stop of the day, smothered the chance. Hobart got off a pair of shots in OT as well, but neither was on frame. A-600 T-1:58 #17 Fairfield vs. Hobart (Mar 31, 2007 at Geneva, N.Y.) Goalie Max Silberlicht recorded 17 stops in his first collegiate start to lead Hobart to a thrilling victory over 17thranked Fairfield in ECAC action. None of his saves was more important than his stop on Greg Downing s shot as time expired. In conjunction with Silberlicht s tremendous defensive effort, Jamie Kirk recorded six points (2-4) to lead the offense. Additionally, both Daryl Veltman and Chris David notched hat tricks for the second consecutive game. Travis Nelson (3-1) and Greg Downing (1-3) led the Stags with four points a piece. Conspicuously absent from the scoring column was Michael Bocklet, who had scored at least a point in 19 consecutive games before coming to Geneva. By the 3:57 mark of the second quarter, Hobart built a 6-3 lead, thanks in part to extra-man goals by Veltman and James Dussich. Fairfield s Casey Martin scored the final goal of the first half to send the Stags into the break down two. The visitors carried that momentum into the third quarter, scoring three straight to seize their only lead of the day, 7-6, midway through the frame. Hobart struck twice before the end of the stanza on goals by David and Veltman to regain the lead. Fairfield forged the final tie with the first goal of the fourth quarter, but just over a minute later, Sean Murphy collected a ground ball in the defensive end, raced through the midfield and shot as he was dragged to the turf by a defenseman for his seventh goal of the season. His tally was followed by both of Kirk s goals giving the Statesmen an 11-8 lead. Downing assisted on and scored Fairfield s final two goals in a last ditch effort to avoid a second straight loss, but Silberlecht posted three of his nine fourth quarter saves in the final two minutes to preserve the win. 9 2007 GAME RECAPS Hobart vs. Penn State (April 7, 2007 at State College, Pa.) Penn State kept the Statesmen off the scoreboard over the final 29 minutes of the contest as the Nittany Lions posted a 12-7 ECAC win in Holuba Hall. Chris David scored twice for Hobart, while Jamie Kirk added a goal and an assist. Max VanArsdale paced PSU with two goals and two assists. In goal, Drew Adams posted 15 saves and the win, while Max Silberlicht battled the substandard lighting and still came away 11 stops. The Statesmen carried the early play, outshooting their hosts 10-1 in the first five minutes. Unfortunately, the barrage only earned a 1-1 tie. The teams traded goals twice more before the end of the first quarter. Penn State started the second quarter with back-to-back goals to build a 5-3 lead, but Hobart rallied with three of the next four scores to close out the first half. Hobart broke a 6-6 halftime tie when first-year Mike Suits fired home his second goal of the season. The extra-man tally came just 17 seconds into the third quarter. Penn State responded with back-to-back goals less than a minute apart to seize an 8-7 lead. Daryl Veltman appeared to forge another tie a short time later, but the goal was waived off by a crease violation. He was limited to just one first half goal, his team-leading 27th of the season. The Nittany Lions struck once more before the end of the third quarter and three more times in the fourth quarter. Hobart outshot Penn State 39-35, but the Lions held a advantage in ground balls and a slim edge at the faceoff X. Both teams scored once with the extra-man. A-576 T-1:53 Massachusetts vs. Hobart (April 14, 2007 at Geneva, N.Y.) Hobart scored the most goals against the Massachusetts defense this season, unfortunately, the Minutemen did the same to the Statesmen defense. UMass came out on top of a ECAC Lacrosse League decision on McCooey Field. A well balanced Hobart attack saw eight players crack the scoring column, paced by Jamie Kirk s two goals and added two assists. Daryl Veltman, Chris David, and Mike Suits all contributed a pair of goals. The Minutemen offense mirrored Hobart s balance, as 11 different players scored. Leading the way was Jim Connolly, who registered a game-high five goals. Brian Jacovina and Rory Pedrick both recorded a goal and three assists. Massachusetts won the ground ball battle and gave Hobart fits in the transition game. The Minutemen failed on just four of their 23 clear attempts, while riding the Statesmen 10 times, creating several scoring opportunities in transition. The final result hinged on the second and third quarters. After the squads fought to a 4-4 first quarter draw, UMass netted five of the first six goals of the second stanza to build a 9-5 lead. Kirk got the Hobart offense back on track by setting up James Dussich and scoring one of his own in the final three minutes of the half. The Massachusetts defense was perfect in the third quarter, limiting Hobart to just eight shots. All but Nick Currie s were wide, while Currie, who had a goal and an assist, hit the crossbar.
