Pony Club NSW & Racing NSW Presentation By Wayne Pernice On 30 July all our ZCI's and the State Executive were invited by the NSW Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Trust to watch a horse training presentation by their head trainer, Mr Scott Brodie. Scott was an officer in the NSW Mounted Police in the 's, and was one of their top horse trainers for many years. On retiring he was employed by Racing NSW. He has a strong background in classical dressage, and is currently training with NCAS Level 111 and FEI International Instructor Miguel Tavora. Scott has competed in many equestrian disciplines, and done everything from roping brumbies, Mounted Police duties, eventing and competing at the highest levels of dressage. During the presentation Scott worked a number of horses in hand and under saddle. Our own Jenny Frankham called Scott's work "outstanding" and she praised the way Scott explained and demonstrated the importance of riding from inside leg to outside rein. It was a very impressive demonstration, with all the ZCI's very positive about the work they saw. PCA NSW and Racing NSW are currently working on an agreement whereby members of PCA will receive a significant discount on horses purchased through the TRT, and our instructors and more experienced riders will be able to attend training clinics with Scott and his staff to enable them to improve their teaching and training skills. There are many other potential benefits we are looking at from our relationship with Racing NSW, such as possible use of their facilities to run events, create on line training videos, work experience opportunities and more. A draft MOU has already been prepared and hopefully may be executed later this year. This has all come about through the hard work and support of your State Executive, and the enthusiastic people at Racing NSW. Stay tuned for further exciting developments. 10

International Mounted Games Championships Tyron, Canada Janet Hamblin Team Manager IMGE17 various games and the second day all teams were mixed up for a light-hearted competition. Our last weekend was spent at the competition. I was extremely fortunate to be named as Team Manager for the International Mounted Games Exchange that travelled to Canada in July. The team comprised of Tim Ling as Coach from Vic, Emma Puckey Vic, Lucy Blenkiron SA, Georgia Elias TAS, Chase Naylor QLD and our very own Jared Newham from NSW. We all met in Sydney for a 3 day coaching camp. We were very fortunate to be able to stay at Londonderry Pony Club grounds and use horses sourced by the Newham family. This was a fabulous way for the coach to watch the riders and for the team to really start to bond. We left Sydney on 30 June and arrived in Vancouver on 30 June! We were met by one of our hosts and spent the day with them until heading to our first accommodation and meeting the rest of the teams from Canada, USA and UK. From day 1 the activities never stopped! We got to experience all that Vancouver had to offer and some! We started forming very strong bonds between the team and also with members of the other teams. The networking was one of the best parts! We now all have friends from all over the world and new places to visit at a future time. We went hiking, cycling around Stanley Park, going to the aquarium, dragon boat racing, white water rafting, zip lining, tree top adventures, gondola rides up to the top of Whistler Mountain, learning the art of archery on horseback, whale watching, to name but a few. We got to experience different foods and travel on ferries. One highlight was a trip over to Vancouver Island where we spent a few days at an exclusive equestrian girls school and attend a Mounted Games day. The first day we helped demonstrate the Each team was allocated 5 horses at the start and then each team rotated to another group of horses at the end of each set of four games (there were 16 games in total). We had not had an opportunity to see the majority of the horses prior to the commencement of the event and were given only about 5 minutes at each changeover to get used to the different styles of horses and for the Coach to decide which rider would work best with which horse. This was probably the hardest part of the competition but the Australian riders were amazing and could adapt very quickly to each different horse. As with all competitions things didn t always go to plan. But the team very quickly worked 11

together and were super competitors while looking after their horses. At the end, UK were declared winners by only 2 points ahead of Australia but it was an event where everyone who participated was a winner. Pony Club was a definite winner. All riders showed maturity beyond their years and were all very worthy ambassadors. After a lazy Monday we were back on the plane for our flight home to Australia it was a sombre group who parted ways on the Wednesday morning. Jared and I would like to thank Pony Club NSW for their support of our trip. We hope it encourages other pony club members to reach for the stars and consider the international exchanges they are an amazing opportunity! Janet Hamblin Team Manager IMGE17 12

Zone 25 Showjumping Championships Mount Sugarloaf Pony Club was blessed with wonderful winter weather for the running of their Showjumping Championships on the 22 nd and 23 rd July, with competitors travelling from far afield to partake in a great weekend of competition. Owing to the popularity of the event we tried a different format this year, with 4 rings running simultaneously 2 rings for showjumping and 2 separate rings for equitation, giving the equitation judges more time with each individual rider while still allowing for an earlier finishing time, something that was certainly appreciated by the competitors and workers alike. A big Thank You must go to our wonderful sponsors: Mitavite, West Wallsend Workers Club, Cardiff RSL, Teralba Bowling Club, Toronto Workers Club, Anita Merrington at Dotcom property Sales, Kent Electrical, and Ben Razon & Associates Charted Accountants. Thanks to their generosity we were again able to offer great prizes such as embroidered rugs and Mitavite feed for Champion, embroidered saddlecloths for Reserve Champion and halter/lead sets for Runner up. Overall results were as follows: A grade: Champ: Laura Norley (Hinton Wallalong), Reserve Champ: Olivia Johnston (Mangrove Mtn) & 3 rd place to Paige Hepher (Mangrove Mtn). For our club it certainly made for an exhausting weekend, with a number of members spending all day Friday setting up for the event, then all hands on deck for the two days of competition. A huge thank you to all the Mt Sugarloaf members and supporters who put in so much time organising, setting up and working on the weekend to make it such a success. The enthusiasm and support that all riders from different clubs/zones extended to each other added to the friendly atmosphere, and the many compliments received from competitors regarding how lovely our grounds looked, and thanking us for a well run event, certainly made the effort worthwhile. Julie Taverner Mount Sugarloaf President/Senior Instructor 14

Zone 22 Trail Ride A group of 30 young horse enthusiasts enjoyed perfect weather on Sunday for a leisurely ride from Farmborough Heights to Kembla Heights. They were all members of two Illawarra pony clubs that recently merged in order to remain viable. The children enjoyed both the historical and educational aspects of their journey which ended at Windy Gully. The route went via the National Park s Mount Kembla Ring Trail. The end of the ride involved the laying of a wreath at the cemetery in honour of the pit ponies that perished in the Mount Kembla Mining Disaster. All the young riders were from Keira Pony Club that formed when Berkeley and Figtree pony clubs came together to reduce the costs of maintaining grounds. Sunday s ride was the brainchild of Virginia Lautrec who walked the route with other parents in case some of the younger riders needed a hand. She had the idea a few years ago but everything came together this year and she wants to make it an annual event open to other riders as well. I managed to get a great contact at the Farmborough Heights Rural Fire Bridage who was so helpful. And then I found a really good contact at National Parks and Wildlife. It just gained momentum from there. We had to make sure we had all our insurance and everything in place. Mrs Lautrec said the children were very interested in finding out all about the pit ponies and the Mount Kembla Mining Disaster. We had a beautiful wreath made up by the lady from Cherie Blossom Florist in Figtree who is also a Mount Kembla resident and a former pony clubber. People just seem to take such an interest in this ride and really supported us, she said. People who own the property around Windy Gully were really helpful and so excited. It just really became a community effort. It was just lovely. And we had so many people coming up to look at the horses thinking it was great to see so many. Mrs Lautrec said they showed the children the old pit pony stables at the old Kembla 2 Mine at Farmborough Heights and the old mine houses still in the area. They went all through the cemetery and Windy Gully and they were really interested in it. We talked about the pit ponies and the work they had to do. And how sad the disaster was. And an older man who used to be a farrier at the mine came up and had a chat to us. Hopefully next year we will be able to have someone have a display with the old harnesses and other items used with the pit ponies. Mrs Lautrec said the feedback from everyone involved, including her own daughter Isobel Lautrec who rode, was really positive. They were all really happy to be there and all want to come along again next year, she said. So it was a really successful day. Story from the Illawarra Mercury 15
