1 MARYLAND HORSE JAMBOREE July 6-8, 2018 Patuxent River 4-H Center FAQs What is Maryland 4-H Horse Jamboree? An overnight program designed to give 4-Hers the chance to learn about horses, share their existing horse knowledge, learn new skills, and share ideas with other horse-crazy Maryland 4-Hers and adults. Who can participate? ALL Maryland 4-Hers ages 8-18 (as of January 1, 2018) who love or want to learn about horses! You do NOT have to be enrolled in the horse & pony project to come to Jamboree! Sorry, but Horse Jamboree is not open to Cloverbuds, (ages 5-7). When and where is the Horse Jamboree held? The 2018 Maryland 4-H Horse Jamboree will be held July 6-8, 2018 at the Patuxent River 4-H Center, Queen Anne Rd, Upper Marlboro MD Do I have to have/bring a horse? No! The Horse Jamboree is not BYOH (Bring Your Own Horse), and there will be no riding or showing events. Horse Jamboree is open to ALL Maryland 4-Hers who want to learn about horses, not just those who own or ride horses. Horses and ponies will be brought to the Center by workshop presenters and activity leaders, and 4-Hers will have the chance to interact with them during Jamboree events. What kinds of activities will there be at the Horse Jamboree? The focus of 4-H Horse Jamboree is learning and FUN! Highlights of the Jamboree include workshops about equine topics, horsey crafts and games, a campfire hangout, and Ponypalooza! 4-Hers can practice and showcase their horse skills in several different contests: the Horse Skillathon, Model Horse Show, and Arts & Crafts Contest. The State 4-H Horse Communications Contest will also be held during Horse Jamboree. See the attached schedule for details. Do I have to participate in the State 4-H Horse Communications Contest if I attend Horse Jamboree? No, the State 4-H Horse Communications Contest is a separate event that happens to be held during Horse Jamboree. If you don t want to participate you don t have to. If you DO want to participate, you must register for the Communications Contest separately. Registration for the Horse Communications Contest will open later in May.
2 I want to compete in the State 4-H Horse Communications Contest, but I don t want to/can t attend Horse Jamboree. What should I do? You don t have to participate in Horse Jamboree to compete in the State 4-H Horse Communications Contest. They are separate events. Register for the Communications Contest through 4-H Online, then attend the contest on Saturday, July 7, Parents/spectators are welcome. There is a $5.00 entry fee for the Horse Communications Contest. Registration will open in 4-H Online later in May. How do I register for the Horse Skillathon Contest, Arts & Crafts Contest, and Model Horse Show? When you register for Horse Jamboree in 4-H Online, check the appropriate boxes. You do not have to pre-register for specific classes for the Arts & Crafts contest or Model Horse Show. Read the contest rules and bring your entries to Jamboree. You will enter your items in appropriate classes on the contest/show day. How much does Horse Jamboree cost? The registration fee is $ per participant (youth and adult chaperones) for the full Jamboree. A one-day, $50.00 registration is available for 4-Hers/adults who want to attend ONLY Saturday, July 7 (no sleep-over). What does the registration fee cover? Full-time registration covers 2 nights lodging at the 4-H Camp, all scheduled meals and snacks, and workshop supplies. One-day registration covers all meals, snacks, and supplies for Saturday, July 7. The Horse Jamboree registration fee does NOT cover registration for the State 4-H Horse Communications Contest. 4-Hers must register separately for that contest and pay a $5.00 entry fee. How does the one-day (Saturday only) option work? Saturday workshops and events will be open to youth and adults who wish to attend only for that day (no overnight stay). Youth and adults attending the one-day Jamboree option will have access to the Jamboree grounds, meals and activities from 7:00 am to 9:30 pm on Saturday, July 7, The $50.00 one-day registration fee covers all meals, scheduled snacks, and supplies. Adults and youth who choose the one-day attendance option must pre-register and pay the one-day fee; walk-ins will not be accepted. Youth who choose the one-day option may enter the Model Horse Show and Arts & Crafts Contest, just as full-time participants can. Entries for the Model Horse Show and Arts & Crafts Contest will be accepted early Saturday morning. Where will 4-Hers be sleeping? 4-Hers and chaperones will sleep in cabins at the Patuxent River 4-H Camp. Beds are provided; participants must bring their own bedding, towels, and toiletries. Boys and girls will be housed in separate areas with chaperones of the same gender. Community bathrooms are available in each cabin. Where & what will we eat? Meals will be provided by the Patuxent River 4-H Camp Kitchen Staff.
3 I have food allergies or special dietary needs. Will there be food I can eat? Yes. You will be asked to list any food allergies and special dietary needs when you register for Horse Jamboree, then to provide details on the Event Health Form. The staff will work with you to provide for your special needs. Can I bring snacks? You are welcome to bring snacks and drinks, but be mindful that others may have allergies. Snacks will be provided during daytime and evening events. What should I bring? Pack what you will need to be comfortable in a camp-like setting: Appropriate clothes Towel & washcloth Umbrella and/or rain coat Bedding & Pillow Sturdy, horse-proof shoes (NO sandals or bare feet) Sunscreen & Bug Spray Personal hygiene items Flashlight Medications* Contest entries (art, crafts, models, posters, presentation materials, etc) *Medications must be in original container with prescription and/or dosage information intact. ALL prescription medications must be listed on the health form and checked in at registration. Youth medications must be accompanied by a clear, complete schedule of administration. Do I need a Chaperone? Yes. Each county must provide adult chaperones based on the number of youth attending from their county (1 adult chaperone for 1-10 youth; 2 chaperones for youth, etc). Contact your 4-H Club Leader or county 4-H office to find out who your county s adult chaperone(s) will be. Because of limited space at the Camp, only the county s designated adult chaperone(s) will be able to attend Horse Jamboree full-time. Other adults who wish to attend can register for the one-day option. Do 4-Hers who attend the one-day option have to have a Chaperone? Yes. 4-Hers must either attend with a registered adult who will serve as their chaperone for the day, or they may join a county chaperone already on-site. If a 4-Her will join a county chaperone already onsite, arrangements must be made through the 4-Her s county program and approved by Jamboree Staff. The 1:10 chaperone/youth ratio must be maintained; if necessary the county 4-H program and Jamboree Staff will work together to ensure proper chaperone coverage for large county delegations. What if my county doesn t have an Adult Chaperone? I really want to come to Horse Jamboree but there is nobody else from my club/county coming. Contact your county 4-H office as soon as possible. Your 4-H Educator can contact another county to see if you can join their group at Jamboree, under one of their adult chaperones. Talk with your county 4-H Educator as soon as you can to allow time for him/her to help you find a chaperone. Who can serve as an Adult Chaperone? ONLY active, approved UME/4-H Volunteers or employees may serve as Adult Chaperones for Maryland 4-H events. Approved UME/4-H Volunteers must be certified and active in 4-H Online. Due to space limitations, the number of full-time adult participants will be limited so we can accommodate as many 4-Hers as possible. Only designated adult chaperones will be allowed to stay overnight at Horse Jamboree. County 4-H Educators will designate the adult chaperone(s) for their youth attending Jamboree. If you would like to serve as an Adult Chaperone, contact your County 4-H Office ASAP.
4 I want to be an Adult Chaperone but I m not a UME Volunteer. Can I get certified so I can attend Horse Jamboree? Yes! Contact your county 4-H Office ASAP to complete the UME Volunteer certification process. You will need to complete an application, provide references, be interviewed, and participate in an online orientation webinar. Once you are an approved UME Volunteer you can register as an adult chaperone for Maryland 4-H events. The interview & approval process can take several weeks, so start NOW to be certified before registration closes! If I serve as an Adult Chaperone, what will my duties be? First and foremost you will be responsible for the 4-Hers you are designated to chaperone. You should know where your 4-Hers are at all times, encourage them to actively participate in Jamboree activities, and ensure they observe the Maryland 4-H Code of Conduct. You will also be required to complete online 4-H Chaperone Training before Horse Jamboree. As a Chaperone you will also be assigned specific roles and responsibilities to help run or supervise Horse Jamboree activities including workshops, contests, crafts, meals, and recreation. You will be notified of your assignment(s) when you arrive at Jamboree. You will be required to remain at the Patuxent River 4-H Center for the duration of the Horse Jamboree. I want to attend Horse Jamboree with my 4-Her(s), but I don t want to be an official Chaperone. Can I do that? Due to space limitations, Horse Jamboree overnight attendance will be limited to 4-H Youth and county-appointed adult chaperones. A one-day (Saturday only) registration is available to adults who would like to participate in Horse Jamboree but not serve as an official chaperone. Since they will assume supervisory responsibility for youth attendees, adults who want to attend the one-day option for Horse Jamboree must be approved UME/4-H Volunteers. Adults who choose the one-day attendance option must pre-register and pay the one-day fee. Due to risk management considerations walk-ins will not be accepted. I don t want to participate in Horse Jamboree, but I would like to watch activities after dropping off/before picking up my 4-Her. Can I do that? Horse Jamboree is a closed event. Like at a summer camp, only registered youth and adults, chaperones, and staff may remain on-site during Jamboree. Adults who are not registered as chaperones or one-day participants must leave the grounds after signing in their 4-Her(s) on July 6 th /7 th. Parents/Guardians and other family members are welcome to arrive at the Jamboree on Sunday, July 8 in time to attend the Awards Ceremony at 11:00 am. What about family members who want to watch the Horse Communications contest on Saturday? Parents/guardians and guests are welcome to attend the 4-H Horse Communications Contest as spectators on Saturday, July 7 during the designated contest hours. However, they must remain in the contest area and may not join or spectate the other activities and workshops going on, that are part of Horse Jamboree.
