Are 4- H ers making a difference? The answer is yes, and everyone wants to know what your club is doing. National 4-H Week, slated Oct. 1-7, is the perfect time to showcase all the good things going on in your county. Kristin Knight, marketing coordinator in the State 4-H Office at Oklahoma State University, is encouraging clubs from all across the state to take advantage of social media to get the word out about club activities. For 75 years, millions of youth, parents, volunteer leaders, alumni and OSU Cooperative Extension staff have been celebrating National 4-H Week the first full week in October. We re challenging all clubs to celebrate this special week by highlighting the incredible experiences 4-H offers to young people and the positive impact youth are having in their communities, Knight said. This year s theme is #TrueLeaders, so be sure to use this hashtag, along with #OK4H, with all photos posted to social media, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. National Youth Science Day will take place Oct. 4 and is a much-anticipated event during National 4-H Week. This year is no exception. Thousands of club members around the country will be taking part in Incredible Wearables. They will be using an engineering design process to build a prototype wearable technology that will gather data to help solve a real-world problem. Wearable technologies are now used in industries around the globe, from education and sport, to health, fashion and communication. National 4-H Week is a great time to let the public know just how expansive programming is in 4-H, Knight said. Youth are involved in so many different community service projects and other activities that help them develop life skills, as well as activities that empower them to become true leaders. Research shows young people in 4-H are nearly four times more likely to contribute to their communities and twice as likely to engage in science, technology, engineering and math programs in their free time. The National 4-H Council has provided all the resources clubs need to promote and celebrate National 4-H Week. From flyers and radio PSAs, to social media content and even a Snapchat filter, the National 4-H Week toolkit has everything clubs need to make this week a success. You must create an account on the website, but it is a quick and easy process. From there, you will have access to all the marketing resources from National 4-H. Check it out at h.org/professionals/marketing-resources/4-h-weektoolkit. 4-H is the nation s largest youth development and empowerment organization, reaching more than 5 million youth in the United States through the 110 land-grand universities, as well as more than 3,000 local Cooperative Extension offices serving every county and parish in the country. 3 Yearbooks are ready to be picked up! Homecoming What began as a small town harvest carnival at the beginning of the twentieth century has evolved into what is now America s Greatest Homecoming Celebration. Along the way, with the support of the OSU Alumni Association and the efforts of the student body, OSU s Homecoming has grown into a week-long spectacular that draws tens of thousands of alumni, family and friends back home to Stillwater each fall. The very first Homecoming was held as part of the Harvest Carnival in the fall of 1913, but it wasn t until seven years later that the OSU Alumni Association hosted its first official Homecoming celebration. On October 30, 1920, 90 Oklahoma A&M alums returned to Stillwater for festivities including the Cowboy s loss at the hands of Texas A&M, a dance and a dinner hosted by Alumni Association President Monroe Otey. Of the 90 alumni in attendance, 50 were from the Stillwater area and 40 were from elsewhere. It was also in the 20s the now-famous tradition of house decorations began when sororities started to decorate their doorways. In 1930, the first-ever Homecoming Parade, a mile long, made its way down Main Street. By 1930 more than 17,000 alumni returned to Oklahoma A&M to renew old friendships and show their pride in the Orange and Black. In 1942 and 1944, Homecoming was combined with Dads and Mothers days and sponsored by the YMCA, YWCA, Dad s and Mother s Day Association and the Alumni Association. The joint effort was a result of World War II and impending gas rationing. Even with the gas rationing and cutbacks on parade floats, decorations and visiting bands, the football game and reunion functions were still well attended. Following the war in 1946, there was a record attendance of 20,000alumni and the largest parade was held including more than 50 floats, six bands and other community entries. Since that time, the event has grown and today is recognized as America s Greatest Homecoming Celebration, drawing more than 70,000 alumni back to campus each year. CASE International (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) has recognized OSU s Homecoming as a Seal of Excellence recipient. This is the highest award given by CASE in the field of Alumni Relations. This prestigious award is given only to programs that serve as models for others. OSU was cited for the widespread participation and outstanding organization of its Homecoming program. Most recently, the Homecoming celebration has launched onto the world wide web. While Homecoming events and activities have been posted online in the past, the online Homecoming experience has grown to include photo albums, video highlights and live streams of Walkaround and the Sea of Orange Parade. OSU s Homecoming is presented by the OSU Alumni Association and is planned by the student driven Homecoming steering committee. Pumpkin Punch Bowl Here's a great way to combine our fruit and vegetable of the month: Thoroughly clean out a pumpkin, making sure to remove all the pulpy strings. Paint a jack-o-lantern face on the outside, using markers. Refrigerate the pumpkin until you are ready to serve. Pour cold cider in your pumpkin punch bowl. 3

Each family will assume responsibility for entering and managing their enrollment through ok.4honline.com and for keeping their information up to date.. 4honline is not user friendly with Internet Explorer, the best browsers to use are; Firefox, Chrome or Safari. The enrollment fee is $20.00/child. There is a multi-family discount for over 3 children/ family and living at the same residence. The first 3 children are $20.00 each and the rest of the children, in the family, do not pay an enrollment fee. We ask that you have your 4-H online enrollment and enrollment fees concluded by October 20, We would like to invite you to join the fun and enroll your child or children into 4honline.com. 6 This year, there will be no Share The Fun exhibition at State 4-H Roundup. So the District level will be the highest achievement for Share The Fun. There is however, another opportunity related to Theater Arts available at the State Level. Information will be posted on the State 4-H website about 4-H Has Talent 2018! NEW!!!! The SE District Contest is moving to new Share The Fun Categories! Any number of youth may participate in an act. The categories are: Dance, Instrumental, Theater or Vocal. Check out the detailed information at oces.okstate.edu/sedistrict.4-h/2018_stf_contest Beavers Bend Folk Festival The Forest Heritage Center Museum will host one of Oklahoma s most popular autumn events November 10th, 11th and 12th, The 24th annual Beavers Bend Folk Festival & Craft Show brings about 17,000 visitors to southeastern Oklahoma each year, just in time for the beautiful fall colors.
