In addition to the AG-EXperience display there were live animal displays including a dairy cow, cow/calf pair, llama, chicken and chicks, pigs as well as heavy and light horse. The AG-EXperience was showcased at the SAASE convention in Prince Albert on March and got a lot of interest from various Ag. Societies. Prince Albert as well as using the AG-EXperience display, also used the It s a Pizza signage to enhance their Ag. Days. The Prince Albert Exhibition received a great deal of support from not only the community but also the volunteers who helped out by bringing in the animals, and manning the displays, as well the volunteers from the Prince Albert Exhibition Board of Directors who helped move the children along. 2 President s Message: Don Kunkel I hope that everyone has had a great spring, and that you are finally getting the opportunity to get your seeding done. I would like to take a minute to thank everyone who came out and supported this year s SAASE convention in Prince Albert. Thanks to Dave Young and his staff, board and volunteers for putting on a first class show. We are all reliant on the funding that we get through SaskLotteries, and on behalf of SAASE and it s members I would like to thank Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport and SaskLotteries for theic continued and future support of the Saskatchewan fair industry. As I write my first president s message, we are currently working with the Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport on finalizing a new three year agreement. Our current agreement was to expire the end of March, but has since been extended to the end of June to give enough time to get the new deal finished. Saskatchewan Exhibition Associations and Ag. Societies are doing some absolutely great work within our communities with not only our events, but also with assisting in community development. The problem is that sometimes we are not real good at telling our story and relating all the successes that we have. As we go forward it is important that you help not only yourselves, but also SAASE by contacting your MLA and telling him or her about what your local initiatives do to help drive tourism into your area and how your events help drive your local economy and that you appreciate and count on the dollars that are granted through Sask Lotteries. Talk to your MLA s and tell them your success stories. Going forward into the future think about your competition. Have you considered how many dollars are being spent on entertainment for large events in the bigger urban centers, as well as in rural Saskatchewan? I know that it s hard to compete against some of these major events, but remember there are only so many entertainment dollars for every family to spend. If you haven t started doing some long range planning then it is something that you certainly need to take a look at. Here s some food for thought. Have you thought about your fair, festival or event and where you want to be in 2, 3, 5 and 10 years? I know your plans will change but at least you ve got a road map to run on. Have you done surveys with your patrons to find out what they would like to see in the future? Have you looked at all kinds of what if scenarios and found answers for them? Have you thought about getting together with other communities and forming a partnership to host regional events? What is your plan to compete? Saskatchewan is booming and we re just starting. With the boom comes the challenges and we have to be ready to meet these challenges by taking the time to lay down some short and long range plans. SAASE will continue to do it s part for Sasktchewan s ag societies and exhibitions but we re counting on you to do your part. We can accomplish lots but it takes a voice to get it started. Make sure that your voice is heard. I learned a long time ago that there are three types of people in this world those who make it happen those who wish it would happen and those who wonder why it happened? Where are you? I hope you all have a great summer show season and that the sun shines on your events and you re blessed with record attendance. Let s make it happen. Unity Ag. - Prince Albert Exhibition manager and his staff - did a great job of organising the display for the kids, and getting some great coverage from the media, with radio, the newspaper and CTV all giving the event some coverage. The AG-EXperience display is available to all of SAASE s Ag. Societies for use. The display includes pop up booths, lap top computers with 4 games, signage that goes with the display, and coloring /activity books for the kids. A hosting manual is just being completed that will be sent along with the display to help the Ag. out. The thing that made the Prince Albert school tours run smoothly and with very few problems, were the number of volunteers that helped out. This will be important to all Ag. Societies which use the Ag. Experience. The AG-EXperience display has already been booked into 11 Ag. Societies and Exhibitions this summer. You will fi nd the schedule with the dates and locations below. SAASE would like to send out a big thank you to Saskatoon Prairieland Park for partnering on the project, and to Ag. Canada and the Agricultural Council of Saskatchewan for helping out with funding for the project. If your Ag. is interested in hosting the display give the SAASE office a call and book the display. There is no cost to our Ag. Societies for booking it. 3 June 2009

4 SaskPower Clean Team SaskPower Announces Clean Team Expansion Nadine Wilson - MLA for Saskatchewan Rivers announced SaskPower s expansion of the SaskPower/ SAASE Clean Team Program. The announcement was made at the SAASE Annual Convention in Prince Albert on March 28. Seven new communities were added to the list of 20 communities already involved in the program. The communities will environmentally and economically benefit thanks to an ongoing partnership between SaskPower and SAASE for the SaskPower Clean Team. In addition to the existing 20 Ag. Societies, Ogema, Glenavon, Mortlach, Nokomis, Carnduff, Lloydminster and Unity have been added. SaskPower increased funding for the Clean Team for 2009 by a total of $56,500. The Clean Team involves youth groups and rural communities working together to reduce waste and collect recyclables at local events and exhibitions throughout the year. Funds collected from the refund of the recyclables goes back to the local non-profit group. It s a win-win situation, says Gary Wilkinson, vice-president, Planning, Environment and Regulatory Affairs for SaskPower. Community groups and the environment benefit from this unique partnership. SaskPower is proud to continue to sponsor the program and help it to expand to reach all areas of the province was a great year for the Clean Team. Here are some statistics from the SaskPower Clean Team: 275 garbage barrels and 150 recycling bins continue to be well used around the province. With SaskPower s commitment in 2009, an additional 175 recycling barrels will be added this year. More that 36 community organisations were part of the Clean Team in Since the Clean Team s inception over 130 youth and community groups have been supported through the program. Including SaskPower s commitment of $56,500 in 2009, over $265,000 has been donated by SaskPower as a commitment to the Clean Team program since In 2008 almost 27,000 bags of garbage were collected, with 3,400 bags of recyclables being collected. 5 Convention SAASE Convention in Prince Albert a Big Success The SAASE Annual Convention and annual general meeting took place in Prince Albert on March 27 and 28. The convention was hosted by the Prince Albert Exhibition and was a great success. The convention opened on the Friday night with registration and pickup of the Clean Team T-shirts and hand sanitizing dispensers and product. Moe Neault did a quick presentation on the Saskatoon AG-EXperience project, which in turn led to a presentation on the SAASE AG-EXperience provincial educational display. The display was set up, and those in attendance had an opportunity to take a walk through it and try it out. The silent auction opened and was outstanding. The Prince Albert Exhibition and their volunteers did a tremendous job of rounding up some great items. The evening concluded with the Prince Albert Exhibition host evening which included performances by HOJA and Keegano. Saturday got underway very early, as it was going to be a very full day. Wynn McLean - Manager of the Camrose Regional Exhibition - did a presentation on event planning and community partnerships. The presentation went very well with many questions and followup requests for copies of Wynn s presentation. Ron Locke - Mayor of Mortlach and Mortlach Ag. president - then did a presentation on the Mortlach Saskatoon Berry Festival. Ron discussed the challenges, as well as how the town of Mortlach mobilized to put on the Saskatoon Berry Festival. He also talked about the part the festival has played in the overall community development of Mortlach. Judy Riou from ACAAFs finished off the morning with a presentation on leadership. She talked about the importance of leadership within communities, and how leadership is essential to community events and community development. The Annual Awards luncheon then took place. Barry Swanson - President of the Prince Albert Exhibition - brought greetings from the Prince Albert Exhibition, with Mayor Jim Scarrow also bringing greetings from the City of Prince Albert. Nadine Wilson who is the MLA from Saskatchewan Rivers not only brought greetings from the provincial government, but also made the announcement regarding the expansion of the SaskPower Clean Team. From there we moved into the awards part of the luncheon. SAASE board member Mike Pylypchuk handled the awards ceremony, with Nadine Wilson making the presentations. Below is a listing of this year s award winners: Anniversary Award Melville & District Agri-Park - 25 Years Volunteers of the Year Elizabeth McMahon - Perdue Ag. John Eberle - Battlefords Ag. The first one was on the results of the CAFE Fair survey that was done last year. Kim fi nished up with a presentation on the how to write fundraising and grant proposals. The convention finished up with the Annual General Meeting. Donna Sagin did a brief presentation on the new SAASE website. Elections were held and the new SAASE board is as follows: Executive President - Don Kunkel - Yorkton Vice President - Dave Young - PA Member at Large - Moe Neault Past President - Donna Sagin Board Members Ron Locke - Mortlach Teri Borowski - Glenavon Lyal Fox - Lloydminster Lisa Haynes - Biggar Rob O Connor - Regina Mark Frison - Great Plains College Advisors Brenda Patton - Ag. Money from the 50/50 draws and the silent auction goes towards the Clark and Anne Lewis scholarship, and this year over $3,000 was raised. Thanks to everyone who donated items, as well as thanks to those who supported the silent auction by buying items. Finally a very big thanks to Dave Young, his staff and the board of directors and volunteers who did a great job on the convention. They helped SAASE out in a pinch by hosting the convention at the last minute and did a great job. Next year s Convention Prince Albert Mayor Jim Scarrow addresses SAASE delegates convention will be held in Moose Jaw. The dates are yet to be determined, but we know the Moose Exhibition will do a great job - see you in Moose Jaw. Saskatchewan Fair Industry Says Goodbye to a Friend The Saskatchewan Fair Industry lost a great friend at the SAASE convention. Lorne Boles passed away suddenly while attending the convention. Joyce Walter from Western Canada Fairs has written the following article in honour of Lorne: The Western Canada Fairs conventions in the future just won t be the same. Missing from those conventions will be Lorne Boles of Estevan, the man who collected meal tickets and supervised the decorum of delegates at those conventions for the past 24 years. Lorne died suddenly March 28 in hospital in Saskatoon. He had accompanied George Poage from Estevan to attend the SAASE convention March in Prince Albert and after being taken to hospital in Prince Albert, was transferred to Saskatoon. Lorne is survived by his wife, Angie; children, Cheryl, John, Douglas and Stacey; grandchildren, Rebecca, Alanna, Warren, Shane, Jacob, Desiree, Schuyler and Kaleb; great grandson, Karter; and brother, Harvey. He is also survived by numerous friends throughout the fair industry. Fairs and exhibitions intrigued and lured Lorne from an early age, and one of his many enterprises was his own midway operation which gave him fine insights into the industry as it developed and changed over the years. No one was able to put one over on Lorne for he had lived the life. Even after selling the family s operation, he maintained his interest through membership in the Estevan Exhibition Association, Western Canada Fairs, Saskatchewan Association of Agricultural Societies and Exhibitions and the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions. When midway operators pulled into the Estevan fair grounds, Lorne was the first person they saw, and often the last person to wave them farewell after the midway closed. He was always eager to get the grounds prepared for the fair and had a secret recipe that was designed to remove intruding gophers. He did not share that recipe with anyone, his family noted, when asked to share its contents. Lorne served as sergeant-at-arms for Western Canada Fairs and was known for his diligence in keeping interlopers away from the buffet tables. You don t eat if you don t have a ticket, was Lorne s motto, and that meant no one not even special guests such as the Lieutenant-Governor or invited politicians. He was looking forward to his 25th anniversary in the position at the 2009 convention, and said he figured there should be a retirement party in his honour. We all doubted be would be retiring, but we did have plans to recognize that milestone in his life. Lorne might not be in attendance in October but there will still be an acknowledgement of his service, although posthumously. Lorne was very proud of two awards being made a life member of the Estevan Exhibition Association and an honorary life member of the Western Canada Fairs Association. In the midway of life, Lorne was in the top car of the ferris wheel. Ride in peace, dear friend. 6 June 2009

7 The winter of 2008/09 saw SAASE and it s member Ag. societies partnering with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture on a series of regional farm management meetings across the province. The two workshops that were offered to Ag. Societies were the Cost of Production and Farm Succession Planning workshops. 11 Succession Planning workshops were held in the following locations - Meadow Lake, Mortlach, Ituna, Watrous, Biggar, North Battlefords, Nokomis, Bruno, Glenavon, Bengough and Nipawin. A total of 238 agricultural producers took part in the workshops. In addition to the Succession Planning workshops two Targets for Success - Cost of Production workshops were held in North Battleford and Mortlach. The Succession Planning workshops assisted farm families with the step by step process in developing a farm succession plan. It discussed gathering the required information and the critical issues to be addressed before a family s succession plan can be developed. A Farm Business Management Specialist from the Ministry of Agriculture spent the morning with the participants, and David Owen of the Discovery Financial Group from Wynyard went into more detail on the actual succession planning in the afternoon. The Targets for Success - Cost of Production workshops assisted producers in completing an Enterprise Analysis and calculating their individual Cost of Production for all the commodities produced on their farms. The workshop concluded with a discussion of a number of management decisions that can be considered once the production numbers are calculated. As well as the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture and SAASE, financial support for the Succession Planning workshops was provided by the Agricultural Council of Saskatchewan through the Advancing Regional Meetings SAASE Regional Meetings a Big Hit Succession planning workshop Farm Business Planning A workshop to help farm families plan for intergenerational transfer. Guest Speaker David Owen of Discovery Financial Group Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food Saskatchewan (ACAAFS) program. Funding for the ACAAFS program is provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. SAASE will be working with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture over the next few months in developing workshop programs for the fall of 2009, as well as the winter of 2009/10. The WEDNESDAY MARCH 18TH 10AM - 3PM GLENAVON GLENAVON COMMUNITY HALL $10/PERSON - $15/COUPLE LUNCH INCLUDED HOSTED BY GLENAVON AG SOCIETY TO REGISTER CONTACT TERI workshops that have been held over the last number of years have been very well received by the agricultural producers taking part in the workshops as well as the Ag.
