Static (Building) Projects Advancing to State Fair Reminder Anyone who has a non-livestock exhibit selected to advance to the state fair will need to pick up their packet at the 4-H fair office during fair week. This packet contains all documents and instructions needed to prepare the exhibit for state fair. Papers will need to be turned back into the Extension office, date TBD. Make sure when turning projects into the office include these 3 things: a full description of the project, # of pieces included (also label each item) so that in case if something were missing it can be easily found, and # of years you have participated in that project area. Hay Bale Decorating Talk to your club leader about decorating a bale. Club decorating is July 3-5, 8:00 pm. Booth Decorating Clubs can make final arrangements on Wednesday, July 5 by 8:00 pm. Here are some reminders: Decorations: All clubs will have one table provided. No staples, tape, thumbtacks or nails can be used in booths, any club using these items may be fined to pay for repairs. You may use Velcro, strait pins and string to hang decorations on the back wall. Hooks can be used on pegboard side walls. Layout: Smaller clubs will have a 4 x5 booth space this year with a card table provided unless other arrangements have been made with Extension staff. All 4-H clubs will have the regular 8 x5 booth space with an 8 foot table provided. Due to limited space, FFA will have one table to share amongst the chapters. Prizes: Prizes remain the same as past years. There will be a $25 prize for first place and $15 prize for second place. Winners will be posted in the building during fair week and receive their checks on Awards Night. 4 6 Chain of Command Fair Week If a problem or issue arises during fair please follow the chain of command on who to go to first: Committee Superintendent ->Extension Staff -> Joint Fair Board & Youth Advisory Committee (YAC). Free Exhibitor Supper Flint Hills is again offering a free supper to all the Buchanan County 4-H volunteers, members and their families. Supper is from 6:00 pm-7:00 pm in the 4-H Building on Tuesday, July 6th. Please thank Flint Hills that night for hosting. In order to eat, meal tickets will be mailed. Only immediate family members are invited to join the volunteers and exhibitors. Poultry exhibitors please have your tickets with you when you check-in your birds on July 5. Extension staff/volunteers can take your meal tickets and will have your meals in the 4-H Building ready for you after the show. Or if you feel comfortable having a family member getting the meal, that is perfectly fine too. Poultry & Rabbit Exhibitor Reminder When checking in on July 5, please DO NOT put your animals in the cages until they have been vet checked. The committees would greatly appreciate it. Pictures at the Fair Photographs of the Youth County Council, Home Garden winners, and Building Exhibit winners (State Fair, State Fair Alternates, Jr Purple, Building Showmanship) will be taken on Friday, July 7 at 6:00 pm on the south side of Black Pavilion. An announcement will be made that day to remind those that will be getting their picture taken. Herdsmanship Remember herdsmanship plays a big role for exhibitors during fair week and it is important that all members participate to make the barns look presentable. Rules are similar to last year. First place club will receive $25 and first pick in the barn and 2nd place earns $15 and second choice of location in the barn. Livestock Auction: Fill Your Freezer Remember to look through the livestock fair book for more information about the rules and guidelines. Once again buyers will pay the kids directly instead of going through the Extension office. Try and promote this event in your community. It is a great way to tell the public to fill their freezers with meat from local producers. Auction is on Saturday, July 8 beginning at 11:00 am. Call and talk to possible buyers to help support you and your livestock projects. Arm Bands Horse exhibitors must have a 4-H clover or FFA emblem on their apparel. Since most exhibitors wear long sleeved shirts, the Extension office has 4-H arm bands available for $2 each. Arm bands are also available for anyone who doesn t have a 4-H shirt but plans to exhibit livestock at the fair. T-Shirt Order Pick-Up Families will be sent a postcard when shirts can be picked up at the Extension office. County Fair Reminders ATTENTION when unloading livestock on the fairgrounds before and during fair week: stall cards in barns may not be moved without the approval of the barn superintendent. Penalty for moving is expulsion from showing only in the barn where stall cards were moved. Fair books are online. There have been some additions/changes to classes. Make sure to read the rules carefully. No shorts are allowed to be worn while exhibiting animals. Exhibitor will be disqualified. Superintendents may request early release for sale animals, but must make arrangements with CYC and Executive Director prior to July 1. There will not be any pig washing or use of the wash racks during the weigh-in/scanning process. Petting Zoo The Buffalo Bells and Middlefield Hustlers are hosting a petting zoo at the fair. There will be several different animals for visitors and members to see. Dates of event are Friday and Saturday, July 7 & 8 of fair week from 12:00 pm-6:00 pm by in the Dairy Building. It will be an educational hands on experience. Be sure to invite your friends and family to check it out! All of this is at no cost. Hope to see you there!

5 Plan Ahead for the Weather The weather can be very unpredictable. Therefore, it is important that you prepare yourself for anything to happen at the fair. Make sure that you have plenty of water on those hot days and remember to take proper care of your animals. Make sure they have plenty of water available to drink because we don t want them to suffer either. Exhibitors please wear sunscreen and try to avoid standing in the sun for extended periods of time to avoid becoming sunburned. If the fair presents severe storms, please listen to and cooperate with, Fair Board members and Extension staff. They are looking out for your safety and if they ask you to evacuate the fairgrounds, please do not argue and leave as soon as possible. If you have any questions or concerns before or during the fair, contact the Extension office or Fair Board. 41st Annual Pie Baking Contest This year the pie baking will be on Thursday, July 6th from 6:00 am-12:00 pm. The pie auction will begin at 6:00 pm that evening. Time slots fill up quickly so make sure you call ahead of time.
