From there, about 3 million years ago, llama-like animals dispersed to South America. By the end of the last ice age, approximately 10,000-12,000 years ago, they were extinct in North America. Llamas were possibly domesticated from guanacos in the Andean highlands of Peru 4,000-5,000 years ago, and are among the oldest domestic animals in the world. Primarily beasts of burden, they also provided native herdsman with meat, fibre for clothing, hide for shelter, manure pellets for fuel, and offerings to their gods. There are an estimated 7,000,000 llamas in South America and an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 llamas in Canada. to Display their Alpaca Fleeces & Products in conjunction with the Llama Fleece Show.
