2 Porter Ranches Bull Sale Welcome to the 2019 edition of our bull sale catalogue. The offering has evolved this year to another level of uniformity - It is our goal that you should be able to select several bulls out of the pen without any information and feel confident that they will calve and grow with less management. This has been improved by maintaining depth of pedigree, with focused balanced EPD selection. We have graded these bulls for phenotype that is sound and able to breed with the ability to provide expected performance. Without a strong able bodied bull, EPD s are mute. It is difficult to speak to the EPD system the Simmental Association has employed. There has been a change and the array of numbers have been diminished in spread. Therefore, this year I am speaking more to the API an TI values as I believe they are a more scientific approach to get more comprehensive value out of EPD s without the confusion. The offering comes again with ultra sound data that enhances our ability to select on the basis of more heritable traits and measure the influence tracking these measurements provide. As you page through the offering it is with great pride that we are able to offer industry leading bulls that rank consistently in the top 20% of the API and TI index. These numbers are not given out on the basis of visual appraisal, but instead are calculated on the basis of production performance and measurement. These bulls have been bred to breed. Today, as I write this welcome message, we have been calving for 2 weeks and have achieved 75% of the herd calved out. To have that conception rate I believe is the result of a hands off process that allows the cows to calve unassisted, and be genetically matched to our management system. The cow has to milk appropriately and be able to compete and get bred; there are no excuses after June 1st. Good bulls here come from females that perform on their own and meet the management expectation that keeps them in the herd. Time waits for no-one, and making the right selection of a herd sire is impactful to the success of your calf crop and cow herd for generations to come. It is with our best intention that we offer bulls that improve your farm and ranch business and enhance your quality of life by letting the genetics and hoofs on the ground take care of themselves. This year we will be offering 30 cow/calf pairs. They will be selling without papers and will fit well into any commercial operation. This is a nice opportunity to add some quality young females into a herd that have had a good start. The initial EPD on an animal has about 20% accuracy. As we mate these cattle and through selection for good conformation and good phenotype measure (like weighing and ultra-sounding) we will, in time, improve the accuracy. EPD s express an animal s potential within a given population. To get the animal to express that potential, the goal would be to mate it with an animal of equivalent EPD potential, which will improve the consistency of the cattle in the overall herd. Success will be found when you have the highest number of traits with average population EPD number expression. It is important not to deviate from the type of bulls you want the direction of your herd to take. Consistency leads to uniformity of the animals in your herd. This will not happen overnight, however you will see improvement in certain traits depending on that traits heritability. CE = Calving Ease - % of unassisted births (the higher the number the better!) BW = Birth Weight pounds of birth weight (the lower the number, the lighter the calves) WW = Weaning Weight pounds of weaning weight (the higher the number, the more pounds will be weaned) YW = Yearling Weight pounds of yearling weight (the higher the number the more pounds as a yearling) MCE = Maternal Calving Ease predicts calving ease of a bull s daughters (the higher the number the better) CWT = Carcass Weight estimates the average differences in carcass weight REA = Square inches of ribeye area (0.57 is average) FAT = inches of back fat measured over the 12th and 13th rib (0.59 is average) MARB = numerical marbling score (-0.06 is average) API = used to rank Simmental on an Angus cowherd. Maternal traits are calculated to retain the female value as replacements. The remaining progeny are put on feed and valued on carcass merit. This is an inclusive number, and the higher the number, predicts more retained value in the animal. MM = Maternal Milk pounds of calf weaned by a bull s daughters. A management number with reflection of the environment and feed resources.
