2 Welcome to our 31st Annual Bull Sale. What a rollercoaster ride since last year s sale! We ve seen it all in the course of one year...high and low commodity prices, high and low oil prices, a cold, dry spring, a hot, dry summer and an early winter with tons of snow and extreme cold. These may be tough times in agriculture but we are optimistic about the future of the cattle business. As we stated last year, we are clearly not expanding the nation s cow herd. The supply side of the equation is very favorable for profitable beef production as we learn how to continue to manage our costs down. Good bulls are the key to improving your productivity and we are confident that those who perservere will profit from an even tighter beef supply that we thought last year at this time. A key component of our mission statement has always been to get at the absolute truth of the beef business. It is our belief that the consumer wants tender, lean, tasty beef despite the contradictions that we see in the feeding and marketing infrastructure of the beef business that largely ignore what the consumer wants. We are convinced that DNA will help us cattlemen find and select for more accurate consistent genetics. We have invested heavily in DNA marker assisted selection to provide you with a better product to achieve what the consumer wants and to do so more efficiently. Roger had a recent conversation with Bill Brandenburg, procurement head for IBP-Tyson in Dakota City. Bill told us several times that what they need and aren t getting out of enough cattle these days, is- MUSCLE, MUSCLE AND MORE MUSCLE! He said they need higher yielding cattle, not more marbling, not smaller carcasses... higher yielding, higher cutability, more muscular cattle, that s what we need! The National Beef Quality Audit determined that consumers #1 factor is to have tender beef, yet we have no infrastructure to measure tenderness in the processing line. But that is coming fast. With these times of higher feed costs, a hundred days on feed can give you all the taste you need and eliminate the high backfat cattle and the increasing inefficiencies of the yield grade 4 s. If you can couple these lean tender genetics with highly efficient, rapid gains with shorter feeding periods we can become more competitive with the other protein sources in Americans diets. This year our weaning weights suffered from dry weather and late weaning as was the case in many of the commercial operations in this area. However, the gain that we have seen when we put these bulls on feed has been astonishing and has given us a lot of confidence that these genetics will really help you turn a profit on the calf crop of In the fall of 2010 or in 2011, when you market the calves that these bulls will sire, you may be selling your most valuable calf crop. Be sure to put the right bulls out this year. Feedlots love feeding these Charolais cross calves but if you feel that you need to keep them black or red try one of our Salers- Optimizer bulls for that added free horse power you get from the heterosis and extra muscle in these black and red bulls. Again LEAN, TENDER, MUSCLE are going to be the key words to your success in competition with the other protein sources in this new and dynamic market that we are coming into.
