4 Horse Project News Horse ID Sheets The due date for Horse ID sheets has been set by the State Office for May 1st. The Extension office will no longer collect Hard Copy ID sheets; all of them must be submitted in the 4-H online system. Which horse(s) do I ID? You should ID any horse that you might use as a project horse (a horse that a member intends to show at Adams County Fair, has complete access to, and is responsible for the care of). If a horse is not identified by the deadline, the member will not be able to use it in the Fair. This is why it is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED to ID any and all horses that the member could potentially use at Fair. How do I ID my horse(s)? All ID forms are completed on 4HOnline under the Animal tab. The Animal Care Form is also on 4HOnline. Helmet Policy ASTM/SEI Helmets with harness are MANDATORY for all riders (age 8-18) in the following disciplines/events: Gymkhana, Driving, Musical Freestyle, Working Ranch Horse and English Classes; as well as during open riding and clinics. We recommend and encourage the use of ASTM//SEI approved safety helmets for all participants at all times. Rider Cards All riders must have an Adams County 4-H Riding card with them at all times and be prepared to present it at the request of the Adams County Parks Staff, 4-H Staff, or Horse Committee officer. These cards certify that riders are in fact active, enrolled 4-H members. Other Equine Opportunities - No Horse Required!! Hippology/Horse Bowl/Horse Judging These activities/teams/contests are a fun, competitive way to expand your knowledge of horses, work with other 4-H members on a team, and travel for competitions. Contact your agent or Wendy Anemaet (wanemaet@regis.edu) or Amanda Goss (amgoss82@ gmail.com) for more info.

8 National 4-H Council, American Farm Bureau Federation Establish Partnership to Promote Agriculture Education and Connect Young People to Careers of Tomorrow WASHINGTON, D.C. Leaders of National 4-H Council and the American Farm Bureau Federation announced a newly established partnership during the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two groups. Recognizing the need to support agricultural education and highlight the impact ag plays in our daily lives, National 4-H Council and AFBF aim to ignite the desire of young people to embrace agriculture, cultivate innovation and empower them with opportunities to improve the world around them. Through collaboration on thought leadership and ag literacy initiatives, both organizations are committed to better link young people to agriculture of today and tomorrow. For more than a century, 4-H has provided young people with opportunities to spark and grow their interests in agriculture, giving them the courage, confidence and resilience to lead, said Jennifer Sirangelo, president and CEO, National 4-H Council. National 4-H Council is proud and excited to join forces with the American Farm Bureau Federation to help empower and develop young people with the workforce skills necessary to pursue careers in the agriculture industry. The Council-AFBF partnership will formally kick off in Farm Bureau has a long history of investing in young people with a demonstrated interest in not only farming and ranching but also agri-business and food-related careers, said AFBF President Zippy Duvall. We re pleased to build on our tradition of supporting youth in agriculture through this formal collaboration with National 4-H Council. About the American Farm Bureau Federation With family members at the county or parish level in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, the American Farm Bureau Federation is the unified national Voice of Agriculture, working to enhance and strengthen the lives of rural Americans to build strong, prosperous agricultural communities. 9 Contest Season Has Arrived Creative Cooks Contest Creative cooks is a contest where 4-H members can be creative with meal planning. Members decide on a theme and plan a balanced menu based on that theme. This meal may be as simple or as extravagant as the 4-Her wants to make it. Based on the menu and the theme, the member is asked to decorate their table, provide one place setting, and dress according to their theme. After selecting their theme, the member will prepare one of the items from their menu to serve to a judge. The member is judged on their prepared menu item, knowledge of nutrition, food safety and their follow through with the theme. The Creative cooks contest will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2017 in the Dome. Contest rules and registration information can be found on the Adams County 4-H website. Please contact Julia if you have any questions. Club Banner Contest The H Club Banner Contest is underway. Specific information and requirements about the contest will be mailed out to each of the club organizational leaders. Each club is asked to make a banner that represents their club and the 4-H program. Prizes will be awarded based on the number of clubs that participate. So, start planning your club banner now!! 10 Odds Parents and Volunteers Be Aware!!! All adults that plan on volunteering as any type of leader that have contact with our 4-H members must have completed the leader process. This process consists of four steps application (through 4-H Online), reference checks, leader training and a background check. Once this process is complete, the leader must be enrolled as a leader in 4-H Online. All of this needs to be completed before they are covered by our liability insurance. If you fail to re-enroll as a leader, you will be required to start the process over. If you have any questions about becoming a volunteer, please contact Julia. Raising funds should never be the primary purpose or goal of a 4-H club. Likewise, if the club disbands, the money in that treasury must stay in the 4-H program and not be distributed to the current members and leaders. Funds from a dissolving club may be given to another 4-H club, be given to the 4-H Foundation, 4-H Council, or a state 4-H organization. How funds are distributed should be in the club bylaws. The 4-H office reserves the right to audit your club s funds at any time. If your club needs information about starting a club treasury and checking account, contact Julia. 4-H Club Accounts 4-H clubs are not required to have a treasury, conduct fundraisers or charge meeting dues. However, clubs with treasuries must account for the funds they hold in the name of 4-H. Any funds raised in the name of 4-H are not the property of the individual 4-H members or leaders. What this means to 4-H clubs is that the money raised should be used to support club activities and not be distributed directly to individual members. Some ideas for use of funds are as follows: project instruction, supplies for officers, club activities, achievement programs, and recognition. If a club has a treasury, there can be some carry-over funds from year to year, but that amount should not be more than the club needs to get started for the next year plus a little cushion. It is not appropriate to accumulate large sums of money in a 4-H treasury. Remember 4-H is a non-profit organization.

11 Ends 4-H Members Council The Adams County 4-H Members Council (commonly referred to as County Council ) is the youth led decision making body on the county level in Adams County. The deadlines are quickly approaching, so don t delay. If you have any questions about the scholarships or need help finding them, please call the Extension Office.
