4 MESSAGE FROM THE LMAC PRESIDENT SCOTT ANDERSON I would like to welcome everyone to the 2016 LMAC Convention and the Canadian Livestock Auctioneering Competition being held at Brussels Livestock. In this, the 37th annual convention, fellow livestock marketers from around the country will meet at Grand Bend Resort and talk about the roller coaster ride we have been on for the last year. Just as fast as the markets shot up without limits, we are all trying to regroup and adjust to new price levels. As our spring run winds down, it gives most of us in the cattle industry time to get together to discuss current issues, maybe unwind a little bit, and prepare our strategies and plans for the upcoming fall run. This convention allows many familiar faces to get together in a more relaxed setting, as, this weekend, we are not competing against each other, but making bonds that will help our industry grow in the future. I would like to thank the host committee for all the tremendous work they have done to make this weekend a reality, and also thank all of our sponsors that have contributed either cash or product to make this event a possibility. Last, but certainly not least, I would like to wish good luck to all of the auctioneers who have joined us here from all over the country. They are the voices that make the auction markets what they are. MESSAGE FROM ONTARIO LIVESTOCK AUCTION MARKET ASSOCIATION LARRY WITZEL Welcome to the LMAC Convention for OLAMA is pleased to be the host province this year along with Brussels Livestock Exchange who will also be hosting the Auction Competition. Spring is in the air and is a special season as the countryside comes alive with new growth and lovely colours. It is also the time of year when we get to see old friends and the opportunity to make new ones from across this beautiful country. It is always great to have the opportunity to get together as LMAC. Discussing the many issues that are of importance to our industry, and the challenges for the future as we continue to promote the auction process and competitive pricing for the livestock industry. LMAC, as an organization, for many years, has given the avenue a solid representation for our members when working with Government and negotiating on important issues. The Auction Competition is a great way for us to commend and appreciate the hard work and the importance of our Auctioneers for our business across Canada. Sit back and enjoy the Auctioneer contestants as they compete in our 2016 competition in Brussels. 4 37TH ANNUAL LMAC CONVENTION - BRUSSELS/GRAND BEND, ONTARIO

5 HISTORY OF THE LMAC It was 37 years ago, on May 18, 1979, in Winnipeg, that a group of forward thinking auction market owners decided to form a national organization. Emerson Gill of Grand Bend, Ontario was nominated as the first chair of the organization. The meeting attracted market operators from British Columbia to Prince Edward Island. It was agreed that another meeting, set for September of that year, would be held to finalize the organizational details. In the past, the terminal markets across Canada held a monopoly on the livestock auctions. Terminal markets in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton were now facing competition from independent market operators and cooperatives from across the country. The terminal markets had their own organization that did not allow independent operators to join. With more and more rural auction markets opening, the terminal markets were losing their monopoly on the livestock auction business. The terminal markets finally realized that the rural markets were here to stay and agreed to investigate the possibility of forming a new organization that would represent all livestock markets. The first annual meeting of the Livestock Markets Association of Canada was held in June 1980 with 43 people in attendance. Jim Wideman of Waterloo was elected to the new executive. Wideman would serve the LMAC until During this time he was a Director, President, and retired as the Executive Secretary of the LMAC. He was also inducted into the LMAC Hall of Fame. Some notable names who attended the meeting were Murray Rea of Listowel, Ontario, Doug McDonell from Toronto, Bill Cole and Jim Fleming from the Maritimes, Lorne Leggat and Brian McDonald from Brandon, Manitoba, Don Rogers from Winnipeg, Stu McDonald, from Regina, Garry Craig from Saskatoon, Ralph Vold from Ponoka, Leonard Friesen of Edmonton, John Milne of Fort Macleod, Bruce Whyte and Jim Raffan from BC. John Milne was appointed as the first Secretary Treasurer. Bruce Whyte, Ralph Vold and Garry Craig rounded out the Executive. Vold went on to become the President of LMAC, as would his son Blair. The Vold family would become legends in the independent auction market business. Jim Raffan s sons, Don and Peter, would become champion auctioneers and carry on the family business at Valley Auctions at Armstrong, BC. Today the Livestock Markets Association of Canada still represents the majority of the livestock auctions across Canada. CANADIAN LIVESTOCK AUCTIONEER CHAMPIONSHIP 5

6 HISTORY OF BRUSSELS LIVESTOCK Brussels Livestock was started in 1958, when Jack Bryans and Hugh Pearson purchased a parcel of land in Huron County. With some renovations to the existing barn, they started a community Livestock Auction. The business was named Brussels Livestock, with sales held once a week. As the years passed, the business thrived and several additional sales were added to accommodate the increasing volume of cattle. In 1970, the business was sold to Bruce McCall and Leonard Bauman, Aden Bauman, Urias Weber, and Robert Mader. The name was changed to Brussels Livestock. Ross McCall bought into the business and managed it along with Bruce McCall. The McCalls soon bought out their silent partners and continued to expand and increase the business. It was purchased again in 1987, and ran for one year, at which time it was sold to Gordon Brindley. Brindley continued to run the business until In that year, Leonard Gamble, operator of Gamble & Rogers Ltd. of Toronto Stockyards purchased the business. Len brought with him 38 years of knowledge and experience in this business. Len made several additions to the building and has increased the volume many times. Brussels Livestock now has three sales per week and extra sales in the spring and fall. People ship to Brussels Livestock from all over Canada and they employ approximately 25 people. Mark and Cindy Ferraro and their family purchased the business from Len in 2011, and have renovated the buildings, made the loading chutes more accessible, and have done various updates to comply with new government regulations. 6 37TH ANNUAL LMAC CONVENTION - BRUSSELS/GRAND BEND, ONTARIO

13 GREETINGS FROM COMPETITION CHAIRMAN RICK WRIGHT On behalf of the LMAC board of directors, I would like to welcome everyone to Brussels for the Canadian Livestock Auctioneering Championships. Many thanks to the owners of Brussels Livestock, Mark and Cindy Ferraro, their family and staff, for hosting the competition. This marks the first time our national event has been held in the Brussels area. The support from the local businesses and our industry partners in Ontario has been overwhelming. This year we have two new major sponsors joining our sponsorship group for the auction competition. Thank you to T-Down Trailers (Ross Annett) and EBY trailers for their major prize and the Canadian Shorthorn Association for sponsoring the Ken Fredrickson bronze statue for the Champion. I would like to recognize the many volunteers who are helping this weekend. Without their hard work this event would have never gotten off the ground. Finally, a big bouquet to our many sponsors who are listed in the program, especially the five National Breeds Association, (Angus, Hereford, Limousin, Simmental and Charolais) who have been with us since day one, eighteen years ago. Also, thank you to the many auctioneers who have taken time out of their busy schedules to support this event. Welcome to Brussels. Thank you so much for attending, and enjoy the Ontario hospitality.
