2 MESSAGE FROM THE LMAC PRESIDENT KEN PERLICH Welcome to Winnipeg for the 2015 LMAC Convention and Canadian Livestock Auctioneering Championship. Born in Winnipeg This weekend is a celebration of what we do. Livestock Marketers from across Canada have shown up for this special event; some to show off their skills, some to renew old friendships, and some to meet new people; but all will share their experiences from one end of the country to the other. I encourage you to take in all that the host committee has planned for us. A Manitoba Night, a day of competition, a morning of business, and the rest of the time to tour, talk and tout the best our industry has to offer. Use this weekend to relax, revel or recuperate after all, fall run is less than four months away. MESSAGE FROM THE MLMA PRESIDENT SCOTT ANDERSON As current President of the Manitoba Livestock Markets Association I would like to welcome everyone to Winnipeg for the 18th annual LMAC convention and Livestock Auctioneering Competition. As the spring run winds down it gives most of us in the cattle industry time to get together to discuss current issues, maybe unwind a little bit and then prepare our strategies and plans for the upcoming fall run. Each year this convention gives industry partners the opportunity to address some of the current issues facing livestock marketers. This year is no different as new regulations are on the horizon regarding traceability, animal welfare and the adjustments that are being made to deal with the new values that are being placed on the animals we trade. With record prices being reached each week it makes for a lot more smiles around the auction marts. This convention allows many familiar faces to get together in a more relaxed setting, as for this weekend we are not competing against each other but making bonds that will help our industry grow in the future. I would like to thank all of the sponsors that have contributed either cash or product to help make this event a possibility. I would also like to thank all of the MLMA members that have donated their time to help get this event underway. Last, but certainly not least, I would like to wish good luck to all the auctioneers that have joined us here from all over the country. They are the voices that make the auction markets what they are. It was 36 years ago, on May 18, 1979, in Winnipeg, that a group of forward thinking auction market owners decided to form a national organization. Prior to their first meeting the terminal markets across Canada had their own organization which did not include private operators. At that time the terminal markets were losing their monopoly on the auction business as more and more rural aucti ons were opening across Canada and selling more cattle. The meeting was attended by Murray Rea of Listowel, Ontario, Doug McDonell from Toronto, Bill Cole and Jim Fleming from the Maritimes, Lorne Leggat and Brian McDonald from Brandon, Manitoba, Don Rogers from Winnipeg, Stu McDonald, from Regina, Garry Craig from Saskatoon, Ralph Vold from Ponoka, Leonard Friesen of Edmonton, John Milne of Fort Macleod, Bruce Whyte and Jim Raffan from BC. Emerson Gill of Grand Bend, Ontario was nominated as the first chair of the organization. There was another meeting set for September of that year to finalize the organizational details. John Milne was appointed as the first secretary treasurer. Bruce Whyte and Garry Craig rounded out the executive. The first annual meeting was held in June of Ralph Vold and Jim Wideman were both on the new executive. 43 people attended that meeting. Last, but certainly not least, I would like to wish good luck to all the auctioneers that have joined us here from all over the country. They are the voices that make the auction markets what they are. 2 3
