Call Kevin Kremer at or call Andy Warner at Appropriate Attire for Judgings & Auctions Please remember that appropriate attire is required at all 4-H project judgings and project auctions. Your appearance should be neat, clean and respectful. No tank tops, tube tops, midriff tops, or low rise jeans should be worn. This is especially critical when showing or selling livestock. Many livestock projects have specific dress requirements so please make sure you read the fact sheet carefully. Sportsmanship and Judging Please remember to exhibit good sportsmanship at all judgings. It is crucial for adults to conduct themselves in a respectful manner. Children learn their behaviors from adults. Please have appropriate interactions with the judge. It is okay to speak with the judge (after the conclusion of judging) and ask questions, especially if the judge extends an invitation to do so. It is not acceptable to question the judge s authority, argue with the judge, or point out the judge s mistakes. A situation in which a judge truly acts inappropriately will be addressed by the Fair Board and Extension Educator.

This year livestock interview judging is scheduled for Thursday, July 21 st from 5 to 8 p.m. at the fairgrounds. If you cannot attend on the 21 st two make up dates are available BEFORE July 21 st. During judging on the 21 st, you will rotate through a variety of stations where (for example) you might be asked to label parts of your animal, identify different breeds, or identify part of a medication label or insert. There will also be a station where you are asked questions about your project and your book will be checked for completeness. IF YOUR BOOK IS NOT COMPLETE, YOU WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO EXHIBIT THAT PROJECT AT THE ERIE COUNTY FAIR. Make-Up Judging Dates for Livestock Interviews/Skillathon (excludes Horses) Both make-up dates for livestock interviews/skillathon judging are BEFORE the July 21 st interview/skillathon judging. 5 Livestock Auction Sale Order ~ Saturday, August 13 th 6pm Lambs, Goats, Feeder Calves, Steers, Hogs Small Project Auction Sale Order ~ Friday, August 12 th 6pm Rabbits, Family Living, Foods, Clothing, Stills, FFA, Poultry Small Project Auction Rules Projects with this symbol listed next to them on the fact sheets are eligible to sell in the small project auction. Those members who placed first in an eligible project should receive a letter explaining the process as well as the rules of the auction. The letter is given at pre-fair judgings. Please read and follow all of the rules listed. Some Self-Determined projects are not eligible to sell. Projects judged prior to the fair have until the first Friday in August by 4:30 p.m. to sign up at the Extension Office. Please return the bottom portion of the paper received at judging. Try to provide a short description of your item(s) (125 character limit). A list of sale participants will be posted at the Sale Office for review on Tuesday, August 9th. Please double check for your name and item. *Note this year, there are no call-ins to sign-up. Projects judged during the fair have until the end of the day they are judged to sign up at the Jr. Fair Sale Office. If the office is closed, it must be done first thing the next morning. *Remember that your sale item must be related to your project and produced by you the exhibitor. Home canned food items are not permitted; refer to the bake sale flyer for questions. Reminder Junior Fair projects may not be sold on the fairgrounds except through the fair project auctions. For sale signs may not be posted on projects. Attention! Market Poultry Exhibitors Birds delivered to Junior Fair Small Project Auction buyers must be processed at a state licensed facility. The two closest state licensed facilities are Spring Maple Enterprises in Shiloh (Huron County) and Tea Hill Farm in Loudonville (Ashland County). Thank You Notes and Sale Checks 4-H and FFA members: please remember to send out thank-you notes to award sponsors and all buyers. Before any sale checks are sent to 4-H and FFA members, proof that thank-you notes have been written to buyers need to be presented. On Sunday, August 14 th, from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. you may get a list of buyers from the Sale Office to write your thank-you notes. Please note that while thank you notes are available on Sunday, many buyers have commented that they enjoy it when exhibitors supply their own notes. Completed notes can be turned in that day or submit stamped and addressed thank-you notes to the Extension Office after the fair. 4-H and FFA members will receive sale checks only after all thank-you notes have been submitted. Do not take or send thank-you s straight to the buyer. All thank you notes must be turned in first. Please keep in mind that sale checks do NOT come from the Extension Office. Sale checks come from the Sale Committee/Senior Fair Board. Again this year: Do-it-yourself thank you plaques available at judging and at the sale office during far! Bring these to the sale. Exhibitors are strongly encouraged to obtain buyers plaques, attach a picture of themselves and their project/animal, and present the plaque (s) to their buyer (s) at the sale.

6 From the Sale Office Jr. Livestock Sale Announcements Every exhibitor MUST let the Livestock Sale Office know by Monday August 8 th whether or not they are going to sell their animals in the Livestock Sale on Friday or Saturday night. If the exhibitor fails to do so by the deadline, you will NOT be able to participate in the sale. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS! The IRS and Ohio Fair Manager s Association is mandating that all exhibitors who receive payment for their projects in excess of $ must be issued a 1099 form. In order for the Erie County Agricultural Society to do this we must have a W9 form completed by each exhibitor and turned in to the Livestock Sale Office or Sr. Fair Board Office no later than Monday August 8 th. Any exhibitor who has already completed a W9 will not have to resubmit the form. Sale checks in excess of $ will not be sent to any exhibitor who does not have a W9 on file with the Erie County Agricultural Society. All W9 forms will be kept in the Sr. Fairboard Office under lock and key. *Do not turn W9s into the Extension Office Make sure that if you are sending out letters to your buyers asking them to attend the sale that you do NOT ask for donations. You can ask them to SUPPORT the fair, but not specifically donate money to your project. We had a couple buyers who were upset last year because they received a letter asking for donations. If you are unclear on how to word your letter, please ask. Thank you s must be written to ALL buyers before sale checks will be issued. You should also be sending thank you s to all trophy sponsors as well. We had a trophy sponsor refuse to sponsor this year because in all the years they had sponsored a trophy, they only received one thank you. The thank you is a small token, but it is very powerful and means more to the buyers than you realize. A preliminary sale list will be available for review by Tuesday August 9 th for the Small Project Auction (Friday Sale) and Wednesday August 10 th for the Livestock Sale (Saturday Sale). Please review the lists and let us know if they are any changes or corrections. Vouchers will be available in the Livestock Sale Office within one hour after each show is over. Buyers can stop in the Livestock Office during the week to register for the sales; they do not have to wait until Friday or Saturday. If you have any questions regarding the Sale, please stop in the Sale Office and ask.

7 Ohio s Livestock Tampering Laws OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION Fair season in the state of Ohio is well underway. We received the following article: Knowing Ohio s Livestock Tampering Laws Helps Maintain Responsible Food Production at Ohio s Fairs, by Dr. Tony Forshey. Dr. Forshey urges all of our youth exhibitors to be aware of Ohio s livestock tampering laws and to be diligent in making sure your animal does not fall victim to an accidental or intentional tampering. The article is posted on each of the applicable species resource pages athttp:// Please take the time to read this. For additional information or clarification, contact the Ohio Department of Agriculture s Division of Animal Health at Livestock Premier Exhibitor Awards Again this year, a premier Junior, Intermediate, and Senior exhibitor will be named in the following species: beef, sheep, swine, goats, rabbits, and poultry. Llamas will have a premier junior and senior exhibitor. Recipients will receive rosettes and chairs. Points will be tabulated on showmanship placing, class placing, and interview judging placing. Placing 1-4 will earn 1, 2, 3, & 4 points respectively. Participating in an event is worth 5 points if the exhibitor does not place. During livestock interviews at the fairgrounds, exhibitors will be asked to answer a tie-breaker question. This question will be used to break ties in scoring for the interview judging section. Low score overall wins premier exhibitor. Ties for the premier exhibitor awards will be broken by interview judging placing. Exhibitors must participate in all three events to be eligible. Exhibitors must participate in the livestock interview judging at the Erie County Fairgrounds on July, 21 st in order to be eligible for premier exhibitor. Participation in a make-up livestock judging will result in the exhibitor being ineligible for the premier exhibitor award. Fair Set Up and Clean Up Set up will begin Thursday evening, August 4 th at 6:30pm. 4-H members, families, and advisors are invited to help set up displays and pens at the fairgrounds. What a wonderful way to see how great our volunteers all work together! We can use all the help you can give. Many hands make light work. Clean up during the fair is achieved by different clubs working together each day of the fair. Please see the litter pick up schedule in this newsletter to see which day your club has been assigned. Remember to sign in at the Jr. Fair Board Office. Fair Passes Depending on how your 4-H club handles fair passes, you could be asked to pay $5 or your club may pay out of their treasury. We encourage an advisor to do the purchasing for the entire club. Purchasing must be done at the Sr. Fair Board Office on or before Monday, August 8 th. At the purchase time you will receive a ticket. The ticket can then be exchanged on Monday, August 8 th from 5-8pm for a wristband. Anyone purchasing a Membership Ticket must buy the ticket in person and sign it in person. This is an Ohio Fair Managers Association rule. This year, NO membership tickets will be sold once the fair has begun. No exceptions!
