1 PCA News August 2017 Quiz! Quiz puts the fun into the theory part of the Pony Club Certificate program. It is also a great activity for rainy rally days or evenings at Pony Club Camp. At Quiz competitions, teams of four compete against each other, with the top three scores counting in each round. It is based on knowledge of horses, saddlery, horse care, safety and Pony Club disciplines. There are 5 phases of Quiz, and there would usually be 3 phases at a competition. If you are running it at your club, take your pick. Classroom team members are asked individual questions that they answer orally. A team member can choose a question above their certificate level and earn bonus points. Stations working as a team, move through a variety of stations which might be a quick written test, hands-on activity or a game. Barn each team member has an individual question, such as show how to tie a quick-release knot, and then teams work together to solve a problem or demonstrate something, like put together a bridle from scratch. Mega Room there will be lots of tables with horse-related items on it and answer sheets for each team member to identify the items. Time at each table is limited and it is good to be quick. Written each team member has a written test based on their certificate level. Questions are mostly true/false, fill-in-the-blank, or multiple choice. 2 TAKE CARE WITH "NATURAL" PRODUCTS The Australian Veterinary Mediciines and Pesticides Authority has released a warning about supplements for horses. Many of the products, often labelled 'natural', 'organic' or 'chemical-free' are not registered, and are therefore illegal to import, possess, advertise or supply. If a product claims to have a therapeutic effect, or is intended to be used in or on an animal, then it needs to be registered. If it is not registered, it may not be safe, or work as it is claimed. Have a look on the pack for the AVPMA or NRA registration number. You can also search the AVPMA database here. If you have bought a product that you think should be registered but doesn't appear to be, contact the APVMA compliance and monitoring team at compliance@apvma.gov.au or phone

4 A life with horses starts here Jane Brook has worked in media, marketing and communications for over 25 years, with a particular focus on sport. Jane was stationed in Hong Kong and Beijing early in her career, managed the Mars (M&Ms) sponsorship of the Asian Games and developed a regional PR network for the Mars Group. This included PR for Hong Kong s first dog show! She is one of the founders of Twenty3 Sport & Entertainment, a leading consultancy in the business of sport and entertainment. Jane works with a range of sports and events, bringing people and ideas together to create and nurture outstanding partnerships. Perhaps the partnership of Jane with her horses early in life has contributed to her success? Jane was a member of Woodend and then Riddell s Creek Pony Clubs in Victoria. I can t remember for how long, but most of my childhood memories are scattered with the delight of time spent at Pony Club. My sister and I were city kids most of the week but weekends meant an escape to the country immersing ourselves in the responsibility and the freedom that owning horses and being a member of a Pony Club provided. Jane s grandfather was an important influence on her Pony Club life. My grandfather taught us the horse s welfare must come first so we spent hours preparing our horses and our gear for the monthly rallies. The trail rides and occasional camp outs were always a favourite, however coming away each week having learnt a new riding skill or just spending time with my Pony Club friends provide my fondest memories. Pony Club also taught me to be responsible for my horse s welfare at all times. Jane started Pony Club on Whiskey, a cross bred with a fair dash of stubborn Shetland, later graduating to Folly, a small Thoroughbred bred by her grandfather and then to Ben, a Quarter Horse cross. My best memories are the overnight stays at the Hanging Rock Pony Club. The ability to spend a night out camping with my horse was incredibly special. Jane still rides every week and is a member of an adult riding club. Horses are an addiction that is hard to shake! My time with my horses is time that I can t be interrupted, it s almost meditative." Alumni stories Jane with Folly at Pony Club Camp Pony Club is a great entry point in to horse ownership. It provides opportunities to get the most from your horse through education and competition. It s also a whole lot of fun.

5 Michelle's travels PCA Director, Michelle Harper is travelling around Australia on holiday and taking the opportunity to drop in on Pony Clubs along the route. This week in NT. Michelle Harper attended Litchfield Horse and Pony Club's final rally for the year on August 19th. The activities included a competitive orienteering course where riders had to find clues to the next phase, ranging from apple bobbing to shooting a nerf gun at a target, crossing the bridge, zig zag poles and some traditional games. Great fun was had by all and the winners got to choose their prizes from a big bucket of horsy goodies. Litchfield Horse and Pony Club have huge grounds of around 100 acres and all of their wonderful facilities are sturdily built of metal due to the possibility of cyclones in the wet season and ferocious termites all year round. Lunch included a sausage sizzle capably barbecued by Leigh Radford. Michelle quietly suspects that he has manned this barbeque on many occasions. The termite mounds are so big, they dwarf Michelle's 4WD! A recent grant application by LHPC to the Litchfield Council was a great success resulting in a fabulous new ride-on mower which will be put to good use after the next wet season. Michelle enjoyed catching up with the President of Pony Club Northern Territory, Ruth Hanssen, and meeting LHPC President, Alicia Strong, LHPC Secretary, Dana Harrower, as well as many LHPC members. A very friendly and relaxed Pony Club.

6 Next Generation of Pony Club Leaders Pony Club Australia sponsored 7 Pony Club members to participate in the 2017 ASC Women Leadership in Sport program, and we have been following their progress. Adrienne Kelley is a member of Herbert River Pony Club, Queensland. Adrienne returned from the ASC Workshop in March with enthusiasm, skills and confidence to contribute to her club and zone. Adrienne organised the annual Zone Camp with a new format which received fantastic feedback during and after the event. By asking questions and listening to members she has found that more consultation is happening and she is able to offer help to those that need it. Adrienne was also keen to get back to enjoying her own riding and competed in her second 40km endurance ride in May. The fitness training in the lead up paid off with Adrienne taking 2nd place in her group, also passing the final vet check with flying colours. Adrienne became a 'senior' in May and has had the chance to help out members at rallies, sharing her own experience with 'challenging' horses and getting great feedback. Adrienne spent a few weeks as an apprentice cross country course builder and TD, putting in the hard yards repairing and building jumps, setting courses, flagging, numbering, walking and drawing courses for the August Combined Training and ODE competitions. It was a fantastic weekend with riders from Zones 10, 11, 18 and 22 all taking part. "It was an excellent couple of days of competition the horsemanship and sportsmanship displayed by all levels of riders was commendable. One young rider was heard across the whole cross country course after each jump GOOD BOY and a big pat for her pony after clearing each effort. It was refreshing to see and hear." Adrienne keeps extending her skills and attended her first Campdraft/Stockman s Challenge clinic this month, run by Mr Doug O Neill, hosted by the Charters Towers Pony Club. "This was certainly something I will be recommending everyone try to take part in the next time an opportunity arises. It was nice to realise that my training is on track to produce a genuine all-round Pony Club horse. Neither I nor my horse have ever experienced the campdrafting world but the buttons were all there to complete the tasks set by our instructor no problems! The motto for the weekend was K-F-C: Kindness, Firmness, Consistency. I think this is a motto I can live by."

7 Next generation of Pony Club Leaders Adrienne Kelley "I am looking forward to being a part of the planning for our Regional Training Weekend at the end of September (for riders, coaches, and intending coaches), and can t wait to get stuck into training the next round of intending coaches. I am working with our Zone Chief Instructor at the moment,developing a demonstration video for rein drill. There are many variations across the clubs on how to do this correctly, and we would like to start seeing the same standard applied everywhere. " "Truckie (my horse) has just successfully competed in Combined Training and One Day Eventing and practised some excellent pairs dressage in costume. I am very pleased with his versatility. We are off next weekend to a non-pony club dressage competition with the North Queensland Equestrian Group where we are nominated in a Novice test, and the pas de deux pairs dressage in costume, with one of our Pony Club friends. " The confidence and leadership skills developed this year have also paid off at work, with Adrienne leading a project team in a new area. Adrienne has now set her sights on completing the requirements to become a Technical Delegate and then upgrade her Pony Club coaching qualifications. And Adrienne is on the hunt for a new horse to continue the journey PCA Nationals We are looking forward to the National Championships in Toowoomba next month. PCA Board members Carol Paterson, Andrew McLean, Michelle Harper and Sonia Murphy, and PCA CEO Catherine Ainsworth will be there for the whole week so come and say hello. Safe travels everyone.

8 Well who knew he was a Pony Club alumnus! Does anyone know which club he was a member of? Congratulations to Pony Club Australia Director and Treasurer, Melanie Woodward. Melanie is a finalist in the 2017 National Women in Finance Awards for the leading Chief Financial Officer. Melanie is Director of Operations and CFO at TGM in Brisbane and is responsible globally for the finance, corporate governance, fund compliance and legal and regulatory compliance functions. PCA Awards The PCA Awards judging panel of Wayne Pernice, NSW, Erin Hunn, Tasmania, Andrew McLean, PCA and Catherine Ainsworth, PCA; have had a difficult task deciding on the finalists and winners of the 2017 awards. The finalists will be announced at the beginning of September and the awards will be presented on 20th September at the 2017 PCA National Championships.
