The office will be happy to answer any questions. The Fair is the highlight of the year for our 4-Hers and many families. Yes, Fair week may be hot, but the members never seem to mind. If we ask our alumni what they remembered most about 4-H, it is the fun time they had at the Fair. New Families Please contact your leaders to help prepare your child for the Fair and find out what your responsibilities will be. Returning Members - Please be sure your Fair entry forms are sent by the deadline of July 6th. We also need members and families to help with set up on Sunday, July 15. Parents Please volunteer to assist the volunteer tent managers with setting up their tents. Also feel free to ask the leaders in the club how you may help. The Fair is open for four days this year, thus we need coverage with the shift worker positions all weekend long. Members We ask that members be prepared to donate at least 6 to 12 hours during the week. Members who have animals at the Fair will need to spend more time. If you are new to 4- H, please discuss your time at the Fair with your leaders. Fair Parking Please cut out the parking pass included in this newsletter. The Fair operates on a budget, thus only members and families that participate in the Fair by helping Volume 33, Issue 4 The Fair is Almost Here! July 19, 20, 21, 22 to set up, exhibit their 4- H projects and help during the fair will receive a parking pass to the Fair. Fair Fun - Fair week is truly a lot of fun. Plan to come and spend time with your family and 4-H friends. The volunteers work hard to plan activities for our members to participate in during the week. Thus, remember to plan some extra family time around July 15 to July 23. Please talk with your leader or contact the office if you have any questions. This can be a very enjoyable week for your family, if you are prepared and ready to enjoy. Special Fair Section Pgs.16-23

7 Page 7 Club News Feathered Friends The 4-H Feathered Friends have been doing a lot this spring to get prepared for the fair in July. We've had bake sales and have been volunteering at local poultry competitions. We had a guest speaker in February come and answer any questions we had about our chickens and he was very helpful. He also looked at some birds to tell the type. In the beginning of March we got our chicks for the fair, we all voted on Rhode Island Reds and have been raising them. They've gotten big already; it's a really exciting experience. Everyone has grown to know each other and become really good friends through the group and since January people's rolls have changed President, Vice President etc. so everyone gets a chance to join in on the teamwork. Kailey and Charlize taught everyone how to make flock blocks for the chickens and brought up the idea to sell them at the fair this year to raise money. Everyone has also been busy filling out their club booklets. We are all working very hard for the next few months and more updates will come before the summer. Here are photos of how our chicks have grown in the past month! 4-Footed Leaders Here is a picture of 4- Footed Leaders visiting Newark Airport. Curious Cloverbuds We are the Curious Cloverbuds! We are a new club but have already been busy. We have 11 members. We have a meeting and then a field trip for each topic we learn about. So far we ve learned about pets and took a field trip to Petco and learned about bugs and went to the Bug Museum of NJ. We are planning meetings and trips to a grocery store to learn about healthy eating and to a fire station to learn fire safety. Clay Busters Clay Busters have been very busy lately. We instructed over 50 people at the 4-H Outdoor Family Weekend. Then on June 3rd we took 9 members and 2 leaders from Natures Keepers on a shotgun shoot. Our junior instructors got a real workout at these 2 events. Except for some sore shoulders everyone had a great time. Maybe next time it will be rifles and muzzleloaders.
8 Page 8 Club and Association News Nature s Keepers Nature s Keepers 4H Club has had a busy year Our elected officers for the year were: President, Gena Blewett; Vice President, Carly Ellis, & Photographer Sammi Zarzycki. We have had some fun club meetings led by Carly Ellis, Gena Blewett, & Katie Ellis. Katie Ellis led us on a hike in Hacklebarney State Park in the fall. We recently went on a field trip with the Clay Busters where their Teen Leaders helped teach us the fine art of shooting clays (targets). We all had a blast (pun intended) and hope to go back soon. The training that the leaders provided to our club members was exceptional and their time spent with us was appreciated. THANK YOU CLAYBUST- ERS!!!! At our business meeting, Gena led us in a discussion of fair planning, and the future of our club. We decided to open Nature s Keepers up to Cloverbuds in grades 1-3. Our older (High School) members will plan, lead and guide the Buds members through various activities. We are excited about the path our club is taking. We are also looking forward to volunteering at and seeing everyone at the fair. Photo Contest Celebrating USDA's 150th Anniversary This is your opportunity to submit photos that capture the diverse ways young people are engaged in agriculture today and the impact it has on communities!! Contestants must be a 4-H member, volunteer, alumnus, or staff and 14 years of age or older. All photographs must be taken by an amateur photographer. Visit for official contest rules. Photos can be submitted on now through the end of the contest, July Photos should reflect on one of three areas of focus: citizenship in agricultural issues, how agriculture affects healthy living, and the science behind agriculture. All eligible photos will be available for public voting during July 18-August 1. The photos with the most votes will be chosen as finalists. The finalists' entries will then be voted on by a panel of judges consisting of USDA staff who will determine the top winners. The winning photographs will be prominently displayed within the 4-H/USDA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., during National 4-H Week, October 1-6, The Photo contest and display are part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Morrill Act and Cooperative Extension. President s Message A message from Beverly Hahn, President of the Morris County 4-H Association As I write this, Fair setup is less than four weeks away. Having volunteered at over 30 Morris County 4-H Fairs, I again have the familiar feeling of heading down a canyon into whitewater rapids: can t go back, can t climb out the side, don t know what s in front of you but the only way out is through it. Not entirely true: I do know something that s going to happen. Something will go wrong. It could be a refrigerator that we discover isn t working. It could be an unexpected requirement on one of our inspections. It could even be that the weather turns out to be so pleasant and inviting that we have traffic jams in the parking areas and run out of food and overflow the dumpsters because we have such huge attendance. We don t know what, but something, and probably multiple somethings, will go wrong. However, I have a simple, universal procedure for handling pretty much any problem. Step one, fix it (or if it s something unfixable, like weather, do something to minimize the impact). Step two, afterwards, figure out why the problem happened and figure out how to make it not happen again. The Fair is a huge challenge for all of us, and fix it is easier to say than to do. But if we help each other and keep a good attitude, then in five weeks we ll be looking back at memories of another good Fair, like so many in the past. Help out. Enter. Belong. Believe. Achieve.

10 Page 10 Noteworthy News Tractor Supply Spring 2012 Paper Clover Campaign During May, the Tractor Supply Paper Clover Campaign for 4-H was held. Jim Newquist, Vice President of the Morris County 4-H Association, volunteered to man a table at the entrance of the Flanders Tractor Supply store promoting 4-H in Morris County. During the 12-day campaign, Jim spent many hours at the store talking to customers and promoting 4-H. One of those customers called the 4-H office for additional information about 4-H and even commented about the nice young man she spoke to at Tractor Supply. Due to Jim s tireless effort, clover sales at the Flanders store totaled $745 during the Paper Clover campaign. Of that amount, $ will be donated directly to Morris County 4-H to help offset the costs of our 4-H programs. The remaining amount will be distributed to State and National 4-H. 13 DISCOVERIES Page 13 NJ 4-H State Dog Show On April 28, 2012, twelve Morris County 4-H members and Seeing Eye adults, representing all three of the county s dog clubs, participated in the State 4-H Dog Show in New Brunswick. Dog s R Us was the only club represented in the Obedience, Rally, Agility, and Junior Show divisions, and its members brought home honors in all four areas. Corrine Rybarski and her dog Smarty took first place in the Standard Agility, Tab Lead, 12 jumps class, along with third in Pre-Novice Obedience, Grades 4-8 Inexperienced, and fourth in Junior Showmanship, Grades 7-9, Novice. Agility classes are divided into Standard (the more difficult) and JTT (Jumps, Tables, and Tunnels) sections, further subdivided by whether the dog is entirely off-lead or if the dog is wearing a short tab lead that the handler may use to guide the dog intermittently, and finally into classes by the height the dog is required to jump. Junior Showmanship is judged on the abilities of the handler to display the dog as if in a breed competition, and the classes are divided by the grade and experience of the 4-H member. Smarty Pants also took and passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen test. Erin DeBiasse and Roxie also placed in three divisions, taking second in JTT Agility, tab lead, 12 jumps, fourth in Junior Show grades 4-6, Open, and Rally Novice grades 4-6. Rally is a relatively new style of obedience competition, less formal than regular obedience, which had become extremely popular. Taking first place over Erin in JTT Agility, tab lead, 12 jumps was Morgan Sanchez with Sampson, a project dog she shares with her brother Kent. Morgan and Kent took turns through the day showing Sampson in different divisions. Competing in the Rally Novice Grades 7-9 class, Kate Dodge and Jesse took third and Danny Kinskey-Lebeda and his lab Justice took fourth. In the Seeing Eye division, all three 4-H members places in their classes (adults SE entrants receive Danish ribbons only).
