We had 34 participants, which included seven prep members. Many parents and family members came out to rally the 4-Hers. The Daily Record also was there covering the event. Be sure to look out for any newspaper articles to enter in our clip contest coming up at the Fair on July Six of the eligible participants received an excellent and will be invited to attend State Public Presentations on June 7 on Cook Campus at Rutgers University. We encourage all those eligible for State Public Presentations to attend. It is a great opportunity for you! Thanks to all volunteers, judges, parents, hosts Volume 31, Issue 3 Morris County 4-H Public Presentations A Success! and 4-Hers! We applaud you and could not have done it without you! We are looking forward to seeing all of our 4-H families and their friends attend. As usual we have our slew of fun activities including the popular Tricky Tray. As the days grow warmer and longer we are reminded that summer is around the corner. And as every 4-Her knows summer means FAIR TIME! Any day you should receive your Fair Entry Book in the mail. Take the time to look it over carefully. Think about what you would like to exhibit at the Fair. The Fair is the best opportunity for 4-H members to show the public what they have learned through the 4-H program. Take the opportunity to show off your achievements. The 4-H Fair is also an opportunity for families to be together. Consider volunteering for a shift as a family. There are many volunteer opportunities for all ages and interests. Check out the shift worker signup form in the back of this issue of Discoveries. We also would like to extend a special congratulations to our graduating seniors! 6 Page 6 TEEN TALK Teens earn up to 60 volunteer hours in new 4-H Service Program ferent service projects, develop teamwork, and learn how to put together a project. We will then implement those projects, have fun, and most of all support our communities large and small. At least one event will take us off site, and YOU get to choose the destination! Youth in grades 8-13 are Attention all youth in 8 th grade and up! This year, we are announcing a Week of Service, June 23-27, for all teens in the 4-H program and their friends! The program will start with four planning meetings where you will work with teens from across the county to discuss and plan difinvited to participate in this exciting program. All of your hours will be logged, so there is opportunity to earn over 60 hours of service. If you are interested in working with this new and exciting event, call Terri at the 4-H office as soon as possible! Congratulations Matt Elam!! Matt Elam was invited to attend Citizenship Washington Focus in Washington D.C this summer! Matt will take a trip to our nation s Capital and learn the inside scoop on how government works. Matt will also be our summer intern here at the 4-H office. We look forward to working with you Matt. Although prep kids are not eligible for state presentations yet, it is definitely a wonderful learning experience. 10 Page 10 State Dog Show Morris County was well represented at the State 4-H Dog Show this year. Fifteen members from Dogs R Us, 4-Footed Leaders, Nifty Heelers and Puppy Tails competed throughout the day on Saturday, April 26 at Cook College in New Brunswick. There were a total of 383 entries representing 26 clubs from 16 different counties throughout the state. Congratulations to all of our members who participated: Dogs R Us Allie Broome - Skylaar took 2 nd place in Novice Obedience, 2 nd in Agility, leash optional large dog and 2 nd place in Rally in both off leash time and off leash score, and received a Very Good ribbon in Grooming. Sara placed 3 rd in Rally leash required class and received a Very Good ribbon in Grooming and a participation ribbon in Jr. Showmanship, grade 9 and up experienced. Hannah Takach Benny won 1 st place in the Jr. Showmanship class grade 7-9 experienced, 4 th place in Agility, leash optional small dog, received a Very Good ribbon in Grooming and a participation ribbon in the Intermediate Novice Obedience Class. Alix Zudick - Beau won 3 rd place in Pre-Novice B Obedience class grade 9 and up, received a Very Good ribbon in Grooming and received participation ribbons in Jr. Showmanship, Agility and Rally. Kate Dodge Jessie placed 4 th in Pre-Novice A Obedience grade 4-8 class and received a Very Good ribbon in Grooming. Jessie also received participation ribbons for Jr. Showmanship grade 4-8 inexperienced, Rally and Agility. Morgan Sanchez Sampson received participation ribbons in Obedience grade 4-8 inexperienced, Junior Showmanship grade 4-8 inexperienced, Rally and Agility. Erin DeBiasse and her mom MaryEllen, Danny Kinskey-Lebeda and his mom Charlotte, Kathy Zudick, Alix s mom, and Morgan and Kent Sanchez were stewards in the Obedience rings and Rally ring. Thank you! 4-Footed Leaders Sara Maass - Niles won 4 th place in Seeing Eye Puppy class 4-5 months. Taylor Farrell and Kenya, Faith Fernbach and Nova, Kate Skroba and Dollie and leader Martha Bardin and Neptune all received participation ribbons. Nifty Heelers Henry Finkelstein - Enrico won 3 rd place in Seeing Eye Puppy class 6-9 months. Adult members Carolyn Finkelstein and Loper and Tracy Marino and Nadia received participation ribbons. Puppy Tails Kristin Miike MJ took 4 th place in Seeing Eye Puppy class 14 months and up. Amy Modugo and Kopper received a participation ribbon.

Register this Spring for the weekend of October 23-October 26, 2008 Radisson Hotel Manchester, NH Northeast Regional Volunteer Forum (NERVF) All 4-H leaders and teen leaders are invited to attend. It will be an opportunity to connect with others in a meaningful and positive way. Group management skills are learned and improved and friendships renewed. This is a great place for leaders to refresh, rejuvenate and have some fun. There will be tours, workshops, speakers, evening entertainment and so much more. The cost is $ with meals included. 4-H leaders-check with the 4-H office for possible scholarships. *Call the 4-H office today for a detailed itinerary and hotel promotional codes 4-H Association Meeting Save the Date!: The next 4-H Association meeting will be May 15 from 7 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. in the Human Services Building. Ginny Powell, the State 4-H Program Leader, will be presenting information about where the 4-H program is headed on a state and national level. There will also be an opportunity for you to express your thoughts and ideas about some aspects of our county program. There will be food, fun, and grants! Leaders, parents and teens are encouraged to attend. Mini Grants Mini Grants are always available from the Association for clubs to purchase education materials or to offset the cost of trips. If you are interested in applying, contact the office for an application. Leaders- please remember to let us know if there are any member changes in your clubs, so we may update our database with the correct information.

13 Page 13 COMMUNITY BULLETIN Clover Notes Are Available WHAT: Clover notes are messages in the yearbook that you can purchase for your child to congratulate him/her for a great 4-H year! WHO: Parents, friends or family can send their 4-Hers a personal note. COST: Two lines $5.00 Five lines $10.00 Twelve lines $20.00 DEADLINE: The notes should be in by Friday, June 6. CONTACT: Call x3 See the back of Discoveries for mail-in-form- Clip Contest 4-H needs your set of eyes to help look for newspaper articles- clips. Next time you open a newspaper be sure to look for any articles regarding 4-H. Cut them out and make sure the name of the newspaper, the date, your name, your club and your phone number are all included. Participants may enter more than one clip, but it may not be the same article. All clips will be entered into a drawing and the winner will be picked at the annual Fair in July during opening ceremonies. The prize (TBA) will be well worth your effort. Help Wanted 4-H Food and Fitness Ambassadors Needed Are you in grades 8-13? Are you interested in an exciting new leadership opportunity? Do you like talking to people and sharing information? Then becoming a Food & Fitness Ambassador may be right for you. Food and Fitness Ambassadors help 4-H with our national initiative called, Get moving, Get Healthy. The Ambassador s goal is to get people, especially youth, to eat healthier and participate in more physical activities. If you are interested in becoming a Food and Fitness Ambassador, please contact the 4-H Office for details about an upcoming training meeting on May 31. 14 Page H FAIR Have you started thinking about the fair yet? We have! This section of Discoveries is devoted to letting you know about what is happening with the fair. Take a look around, see if there is anything you or your club is interested in helping out with, then contact the office to let us know! Help Us Pay For The Fair and Earn a Ride Wrist Band and Pizza Party! Please solicit sponsorships from your places of employment as well as local companies and businesses. (Anywhere you and your family go- the salon, car shop, grocery store, dry cleaner.) Please also ask your own family and 4-H club if they would like to sponsor a tent. Private and corporate sponsorship is necessary to meet fair expenses. We need to raise over $12,000 for tent rentals, entertainment, awards, and more. Sponsorship can be as small as $50, or as large as $2,000. Any amount is appreciated. For every $500 of sponsorship that you bring in to the fair, you will receive a weekend amusement ride armband. This is an opportunity to ride the rides all three days of the Fair for free! Please contact Kathy in the 4-H office at x3 if you would like copies of the sponsor sheet for anyone you talk to. We appreciate all of your anticipated help and support! Goals of our 4-H Fair 1. Recognize accomplishment of 4-H members during the past 4-H year. 2. Serve as a showcase for the public to observe a wide variety of 4-H projects in action. 3. Present an accurate, contemporary image of 4-H as a relevant, year round non-formal educational program for youth of all backgrounds and interests. 4. Attract 4-H members and adult 4-H volunteers to become involved in the 4-H program. 5. Serve as a medium to educate the public about selected subject matter and issues, particularly those which are related to the expertise of Rutgers Cooperative Extension and the 4-H Youth Development Program. 6. Allow 4-H volunteers to develop and demonstrate their leadership abilities through planning and conducting the fair. 7. Provide a means for governmental agencies and community organizations to interrelate. 8. Provide free family fun as a service to the community. 9. Raise money to support the 4-H program. Fair Theme/Yearbook Cover Contest Do you have ideas for the 2008 Yearbook Cover and Fair Theme Contest? Mail your entry to the 4-H Office by May 17, You may enter as many designs as you wish, but each entry must have your name, address, and phone number as well as your club name on the back. The design should fit on a 8 1/2 x11 sheet of paper with a 1/2 inch border around the edges. Last year s winning theme was Explore Your Future through 4-H by Hannah Takach of Dogs R Us. Next year, it could be yours!

15 Page H FAIR We Need Your Help! The fair is a huge success every year due to the fact that we have such wonderful volunteers to help us every year. Can you help out this year? Below is a list of fair jobs/ division chairs that are still needed. If you feel you could help out in any of these positions, please contact the office at x3 and let us know! Fair Announcers Publicity Writer Shift Worker Scheduling Crew Road Sign Crew Photo Contest Chairperson Dignitary Reception Refreshments Coordinator Hospitality Host/Hostess Division Judges Refreshment Coordinator Literary Chair YOUR CLUB CAN BE IN THE YEARBOOK What s a yearbook if you re not in it? We encourage each club to create a page for the yearbook that helps to describe their club. The annual yearbook will be given out at the Morris County 4-H Fair from July The page should include your club s contact information and tell about your club. The design should fit on an 8 1/2 x 11 page with a 1/2 border around the edges. Use black ink or a marker to create your page, as it will be photocopied in black and white. Photos and drawings may also be used. If your club is planning to participate, please have your entry to the 4-H office by June 15. Don t forget about our club banner and display contest! There is a $25 scholarship being offered by the Association for supplies and other expenses incurred while preparing the display and banner. If your club is interested in applying, please call the 4-H office to request an application. We hope every club participates in this event! Children s Country Store Items Needed Spring cleaning is the perfect time to clean out your closets and pack up all of those toys, books, puzzles, etc. that are no longer being played with at your house and donate them to the Children s Country Store for the 4-H Fair. This popular booth sells used games and toys at bargain prices throughout the fair. Last year, thanks to the generous donations of our 4-H families and friends, we collected close to $1,000. Please pack your items securely in boxes and then put them in plastic trash bags for safe transport. This is also a fun place to volunteer for a three hour shift. See the enclosed flyer for details.

16 Page FAIR You Can Choose What To Do! Bring your camera to the Fair. Anyone can take pictures, just point, shoot, and click anything you think will make great fair pictures. Photos can be entered into a contest. Give a Presentation -- All 4-H members who gave a county public presentation are invited to present again at the Fair. Show your club s team spirit. Have a club meeting at the Fair, and a private club fair pizza party! Leaders can take the lead on this! Ride on all the rides you want! For $20.00, 4-Hers can purchase a fair wristband that allows them to ride on any ride, at any time, the whole weekend of the fair. After a tiring Fair day, it s time to hit the hay! 4-H would love to have you spend the night at the Fair! Everyone who spends the night needs to fill out a permission slip from the 4-H office. A copy of this 4-H form can be downloaded off of the You must have a parent or chaperone staying with you. All permission slips must be signed by you, your parent, your chaperone and your tent manager. Each adult staying at the Fair needs to sign an Adult Overnight Permission Slip as well. Everything must be completed before the fair and sent to the 4-H office. What to wear to the fair: 4-H t-shirts or bandanas. These may be purchased at the Fair Information Booth. What not to wear: NO Bare feet, we like your toes, but prefer to see them in sneakers. What not to bring to the Fair: No Bicycles No Retractable Dog Leashes Don t forget to sign up and to meet! Club members and parents are encouraged to sign up for a three hour shift in one or more of the areas listed. (See attached sheets at the end of this newsletter). For everyone who works a shift, they will be entered into the $100 work and win contest. Also, everyone is welcome to attend the general fair meeting on June 19 at 7 p.m. at the 4-H office. All fair committee members are required to attend.

17 Page FAIR FAQ S 1. Where is the Fair and when do I enter my exhibit? The Morris County 4-H Fair will be held from Friday-Sunday, July 25-27, 2008, at Chubb Park in Chester. All exhibits must be registered in advance of displaying in order to be judged and receive recognition. 2. Where do I put my exhibit? There will be a large 4-H exhibit tent. The exhibits will be displayed on tables or display boards set up in the tent. The tent coordinators will tell you where to place your exhibit. 3. How do I enter my exhibits? You will receive a 4-H Fair Entry Book in the mail. Enclosed in this Entry Book are your entry forms. All entries at the Fair must have entry tags. You will receive your entry tags when you bring your entries to the fairgrounds on Wednesday, July 23, between 4-9 p.m. All food entries will be brought to the Chester Public Library on Wednesday night between 7 9 p.m. 4. How many exhibits may I enter? 4-Her s are eligible to exhibit in as many divisions and classes as they desire. Some projects may have certain limitations explained under each division. All articles must be made or raised by the exhibitor. 5. How will my entry be judged? Exhibits will be judged on the Danish System: blue ribbon for excellent, red for very good, yellow for good and white for fair. The Morris County 4-H Fair committee will secure competent judges. 6. What award might I receive? Morris County 4-H Fair award ribbons will be given for each exhibit entered. A special rosette will be awarded to the outstanding exhibit for each division. Rosettes will be awarded in some divisions. The Best in Show Awards will be given to the exhibitor at the Closing Ceremonies of the Fair. 7. When will I get my award? An official Fair Awards Ceremony will be held at approximately 3:30 p.m. on July 27. Rosettes and trophies will be awarded to the outstanding exhibits. Danish Ribbons will be given out when the exhibits are judged. 8. When do I remove my exhibits? Removal of exhibits will be after 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 27. Exhibits MUST be on display until then to be eligible to receive awards. You can make arrangements to have your exhibits picked up if you will not be able to get them yourself. 9. What can I do to help make the Fair a success? Enter your exhibits BEFORE JULY 9. Literary entries are due by July 1. Attend the Fair and be willing to help whenever needed. Pick up litter and keep the fairgrounds neat and clean. Have a smile on your face and cheery disposition and it will endear you to all the spectators who visit the 4-H Fair.
