2 IOWA CATTLEMEN S ASSOCIATION Friday, April 1, Sale: 6:30 PM Dunlap Livestock Auction Dunlap, IA VIEW SALE ONLINE AT LMAAUCTIONS.COM! Greetings from the Iowa Cattlemen s Association Bull Performance Evaluation Program This past year, the cattle industry has seen its ups and downs after record setting years. As cattle producers of all kinds, we must challenge ourselves to produce effi cient cattle that can perform. This set of spring yearling bulls have made no exception in that they have risen to the top when co-mingled with bulls from all over the state to perform in a similar environment. They are an outstanding group of herd sire prospects with performance, eye-appeal, calving ease and breed leading genetics for today s industry. This group of bulls have been lighting up the numbers since the day they arrived at the test station. This set of bulls has been averaging 3.87 pounds per day with a 3.33 weight per day of age throughout the 112-day test. The test station manager has continued to use a growing ration to make sure that your investment in an ICA bull has longevity of service ahead of him. We believe you will be impressed not only with the numbers in the catalog, but with the condition of the bulls at the sale facility. The ICA continues to bring you the cream of the crop in the bulls consigned within their contemporary group. The bulls consigned to the ICA sales have the genetic potential to add pounds to their progeny and dollars to your bottom line. How do you know if the program works? The proof is with the valued customers that continue to purchase their bulls in the ICA bull sales. For being a great customer, we are going to reward you for selecting an ICA Performance Tested bull by entering your name into a drawing for a cash certifi cate towards you total purchase that evening or at a future ICA sale. Simply put, the more you purchase, the better your chances of winning the prize. Our foremost goal among our program is to produce great cattle from good people to form everlasting bonds of friendship with our customers. If you need any advice or assistance with purchases, please don t hesitate to call the consignors, the sale crew or ICA staff if you have any questions on the bulls. We will help in any way possible. Thank you for your continued interest and support of the program. We look forward to seeing you the evening of April 1st at the Dunlap Livestock Auction. Sincerely, Carrie Horman Forty-four bulls fi nished the test at Van Meter Feedyard. Our big thank you goes out to Van Meter Feedyard for a job well done. 19 Interpreting the Ultrasound Data The ultrasound traits measured are rump and rib fat, ribeye area, and % intramuscular fat (IMF). The ribeye image is collected between the 12-13th ribs where the rib fat and ribeye area are measured. The IMF images are evaluated between the 12-13th ribs as well, but in longitudinal images instead. In fact, a minimum of four IMF images are collected and the values are averaged. This value would be correlated to the marbling trait for quality grade. The rump fat image is collected between the hooks and the pins of the animal and gives another indication of external body fat. Ultrasound data can be evaluated similarly to other performance traits. Ultrasound EPD s should be the best indicator of an animal s carcass trait potential. Like other performance traits, fi nd the breed average of each trait and compare that to the animal s EPDs in question. Above average means the offspring are likely to have a higher than average value of a given trait (depending on the accuracy value). To increase values of a certain trait in your herd, choose the higher EPDs for that trait. Another method of reporting ultrasound data is in ratios, 100 being average. The ratios of any given trait take into consideration the average of the contemporary group (animals of the same sex managed together with the same diet and environment). An animal with a ratio above 100 for a given trait would have a higher than average adjusted value for that trait. Again, if you are looking to increase a trait s value, look for a ratio over 100. Ratios do not have the benefi t of utilizing ancestral information as EPDs do, but can still be a meaningful tool within the contemporary group. Age adjusted values or the actual values may be reported in some instances along with EPDs or ratios. Like other performance data, actual values are more of an indication of management or age of an animal. For instance, a 600 pound weaning weight is not an indication of an animal s performance without knowing if 600 pounds is above or below average in its contemporary group. Likewise, ultrasound values, adjusted or actual, do not indicate the potential of an animal. It is unfair to compare one ranch to another based on actual or adjusted values. That would only be differentiating management practices or feeding programs. Actual values should be adjusted and adjusted values should be evaluated within contemporary groups. Ultrasound has become a useful tool in evaluating live animals for carcass traits. The ultrasound measurements correspond to the carcass traits evaluated to determine Yield Grade and Quality Grade. Perhaps the greatest advantage of ultrasound data is that the dams, as well as the sires, can be included in an individual s EPD s. by Becky Hays, Manager, UltraInsights Processing Lab 19

Pelvic Area - Width x height = pelvic area in square centimeters, adjusted to 365 days of age. 10. Ultrasound measurement - See attached page. 11. Percent Retail Product - the amount of salable meat the carcass will yield assuming a 63% dress of the fi nal weight and 2.5% kidney, pelvic & heart fat. Calculated using the standard BIF formula. 12. Information from Breeders: a. Birth Wt - Actual birth weight as reported by bull owner. b. 205 Wt -Actual weaning weight adjusted to the standard 205 days with an adjustment for age of dam. c. 205 Wt Ratio -- Within herd ratio compared to other bulls in the on-farm contemporary group. d. Registration Papers - Are available for review in the sale offi ce for other EPDs or indexes published by the various breed associations. REGISTRATION PAPERS: All sale bulls have been registered with their respective breed associations. Registration papers will be transferred to the buyer by the sale management. EPD INFORMATION: An expected progeny difference (EPD) is prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform in comparison with other animals, of the same breed, in the evaluation. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. EPDs are provided by the national breed associations for each bull. The breed average EPDs are listing in the sale catalog within the breed heading. You may compare each bull with that average to determine his strength in each trait. Accuracy of an EPD is a measure of reliability. It is a function of the amount of information used in the calculation of a specifi c EPD. Based on this definition, ICA sale bull s accuracies will be moderate to low. Research, however, indicates that EPDs for young non-parent bull are 8-10 times more accurate for making selection decisions than adjusted weights and ratios. Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in fi rst-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which an sire s calves will be born when he is bred to fi rst-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), Weaning Weight EPD (WW), Yearling Weight EPD (YW),expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit those weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Calving Ease Mater-l (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire s daughters will calve as fi rst-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Mater-l Milk EPD (MM), is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Carcass Weight EPD (HCW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling EPD (MARB), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (REA), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fat Thickness EPD (BF), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. ANGUS BREED ONLY $Value Indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, mater-l milk, and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. Quality Grade ($QG), $QG represents the quality grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $QG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on improving quality grade. The carcass marbling (Marb) EPD contributes to $QG. Yield Grade ($YG), $YG represents the yield grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $YG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on red meat yield. It provides a multi-trait approach to encompass ribeye, fat thickness and weight into an economic value for red meat yield. Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. CHAROLAIS BREED ONLY Total Maternal EPD (TOT MAT), a value to predict the weaning weight performance of calves from a animal s daughters due to genetics for growth and maternal ability. Total Maternal is calculated by adding ½ the WWT EPD to the Maternal Milk EPD. Terminal Sire Index (TMI) the AICA Terminal Sire Index (TSI) is a formal method of combing Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) - BWT, WWT, YWT, REA, HCW, MARB and FAT - into one single value on which to base selection decisions. the TSI uses estimates of the genetic relationships between traits with an economic default value based on three year rolling USDA data. SIMMENTAL BREED ONLY Stayability (STAY), expressed as the probability that an animal s daughters will remain in production to at lease six years of age when compared to the daughters of another animal. A measure of sustained fertility that probably refl ects traits such as fleshing ability and structural soundness. Yield Grade (YG), is measured in a carcass yield grade units/score at 475 days and low values indicate a lower yeild grade. All-Purpose Index (API), evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd wit the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI), evaluates sires for use on mature cows with all the offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. 21

22 CARE OF NEWLY PURCHASED BULL When you get you newly purchased bull(s) home, there are several management practices you should observe to get the best reproductive performance. These are: 1. Feeding: Remember the bull is a yearling and still has a lot of growing to do. Feed the young bull well. Hay and grain or silage and grain plus a protein supplement will be adequate. You should feed one pound of grain per 100 pounds of body weight and 1-2 pounds of protein supplement, in addition to a full feed of good quality hay or silage from now until the breeding season is recommended if practical. After the first breeding season, continue to feed liberally so the bull will grow out well. 2. Breeding Season: Plan to use the new bull in a restricted 45 to 60 day breeding season for the first time. Observe him closely to be sure he is serving and settling females. 3. Number of Cows: The yearling bull should be used on a minimal number of cows or heifers. The number should be governed by his age at the start of the breeding season. The following is a guide. BULL S AGE # OF FEMALES 12 to 15 mos. 10 to to 18 mos. 12 to to 24 mos. 18 to mos. & over 25 to Management and Housing: The bull should be put in a well-fenced lot prior to and after breeding season. A shed or other natural windbreak should be provided. Provide plenty of clean water. Provide minerals free choice. Treat routinely for lice, grubs, and worms. Run bulls together with caution. Bulls of similar age and those that have bred cows together will usually work. Check for any unsoundness that might develop. Vaccinate annually for IBR, PI3, BVD, and Lepto. ICA BULL EVALUATION PROGRAM INFORMATION TERMS AND CONDITIONS Announcements: From the auction block shall take precedence over information in the sale catalog. Bidding: Each animal on which there are two or more bids will be sold to the higher bidder. Sale Order: Bulls are sold in breed rotation based on performance within breed. Handling Certificates: Signed certifi cates available at settlement. Health Certificates: Signed certifi cates available at settlement. ICA gives no warranty, expressed or implied, including any warranty of merchantability or fi tness for particular purposes. All guarantees are between the buyer and seller. ICA acts only as a sales agent. Bulls listed as purebreds or eligible for registry are so guaranteed by the seller, ICA gives no warranty as to the breed purity of bulls offered for sale. Breeding Guarantee: An offi cial health certifi cate and semen evaluation certifi cate, as supplied by seller, will be regarded and accepted by buyer of bull(s) as conclusive evidence of satisfactory health and fertility. Bulls are guaranteed breeders if properly cared for. Any bull that has not proven himself a breeder within six months after sale date, if in healthy condition and meets the health regulations of the State of Iowa may be returned to the seller at the buyer s expense. The seller reserves the privilege to try for a period of six months to prove the bull is a breeder. Should the bull fail to prove a breeder in the specifi ed time period, the seller will refund the full purchased price, which will be considered as full settlement and satisfaction of all claims. All complaints regarding breeding problems must be reported in writing by the buyer to the seller within six months. Contract: The above terms and guarantee shall constitute a contract between the buyer and the seller of each bull sold. Insurance: American Livestock Insurance Company offers insurance coverage on bulls purchased. Rate are: 30 day - $2.40/$100; 90 day - $3.60/$100; 6 month - $4.00/$100; 1 year - $6.00/$100. Liability: All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. The Iowa Cattlemen s Association and the sale barn assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents, which may occur. 22
