1 PENNSYLVANIA ANGUS ASSOCIATION CELEBRATING OVER 60 YEARS AS AN ASSOCIATION August, 2018 INSIDE THIS ISSUE : NEWS! NEWS! - JUNIOR NEWS! BREEDERS SHOW and NJAS Winners IMPORTANT DATES AND DEADLINES Pennsylvania Angus

2 Message from our President Good Morning Angus Breeders, Summer is in full swing. The beginning of July, temperatures hit 100 and our juniors headed west to Madison, WI for the National Junior Angus show. This momentous event for juniors and adults to network, compete and meet old friends took place July There were events for everyone regardless if you took cattle or not and the live coverage was execellent. I hope you enjoyed the PA Summer Beef Field Day sponsored by the Pennsylvania Angus Association. It was be held on July 21, 2018 at the Penn State Beef/Sheep Center. The day included a discussion on selection of cattle combining phenotype and genotype, a tour of the Penn State Angus herd and the keynote speaker was Dr. Dan Moser, President of Angus Genetics, Inc. He talked about Breeding Cattle for the Future: Genomic Selection in Angus Cattle and Angus Link: A Value- Added Feeder Calf Marketing Program. A BIG thank you goes out to Sam Long, Liz Zeigler, and Tiffany Bell. They make up the Pa Breeders Show committee and it was a very good time. Our judges were CJ Furlong for the Junior Show and Tom McCall for the Open Show. The meal, put on by Mike Whiteside, was excellent and probably the best buy at $15 in the country. Thank you MultiMin and others for their support. Congratulations to everyone that participated and our winners. Please find the results in the July newsletter. The date for the 2019 show are July 4-6. See you there. At the Board of Directors meeting held at the Breeder s Show, it was decided to not have a Fall State Angus Sale. We struggled to find a venue with a sale ring and dates to make it work. Our next sale is the Finest Female Sale held in conjunction with the PA Bull Test in March. Looking forward to 2019 we are interested in a fall sale and would entertain ideas on venues and dates. Please contact Gene Trowbridge our sale chairman. Something to put on the calendar. November 3-5, 2018 is the National Angus Convention and Trade Show in Columbus, OH. This is a great event and with the help of the CBE we are going to put together a bus trip to the event. Our plan is to pick people up on the bus as we travel the state towards Columbus and then travel to the convention. Please stay tuned for more information as we put this together. If you have any questions or want to help in this project, give me a call. 8 Angus Breeders, We Need Your Input. By Dr. Dan Moser 07/26/2018 Angus Breeder, We have just launched a survey that is important to the future of the Angus breed, and we need your input. The survey is a critical component of a project to review the Angus $Value indexes. These indexes, $B, $W, $F, $G, $EN, etc., were first implemented starting in Although economic factors have been updated annually, the base models behind the $Values are now 14 years old and remain relatively unchanged since their inception. With new EPDs now in place, such as heifer pregnancy and docility, their impact on the $Values could be included in an updated model. However, rather than simply adjusting the current models, Angus Genetics, Inc. (AGI) is reviewing Angus $Values to ensure that we accurately meet the needs of both purebred breeders and commercial cattlemen. We have teamed up with AbacusBio Ltd. for this important project. AbacusBio is a New Zealand-based agricultural science consulting company working across a broad spectrum of the agricultural industry and is a trusted world leader in the development of economic selection indexes for livestock species. This is your opportunity as breeders to collaborate in the review. Please take the time to complete the survey via a link on Angus.org and encourage your commercial customers to do the same. You will need to set aside up to 30 minutes to complete the survey, but the value of doing this is that your opinion will be heard and will guide our team to develop the most useful tools possible. Respondents will be entered in a drawing for a $250 Cabela s gift card Calendar of Events Aug Oct 5-7 Oct 16 Oct 17 Do you have a great photo you would like to share Jamie Brozman is putting together the 5th annual slide show for the banquet, do you want to see your photo???
