Volunteer to host a Cherry Valley Ride. Contact Heidi Staheli at or hstaheli@wildblue.net to have your ride added to the CVR schedule. MEMBERSHIP DUES Annual Membership fees of $15 a person or $25 a family are due for If you haven't already done so, please mail yours to Cherry Valley Riders, PO Box 87, Duvall, WA Please make all checks payable to Cherry Valley Riders. TRAP Cherry Valley Rides has an awards program called TRAP (Trail Riders Award Program). Members log their riding hours on a form for the year and that form is turned into the chairperson before the annual CVR Christmas party. At the party award pins are handed out for 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1000 hours. Hours are added to eachother each year. Hours spent in arenas do not count, these hours need to be spent on the trail. Time starts from when you swing your leg into the saddle until you dismount at the end of the ride. The chairperson then sends these forms to the King and Snohomish County Parks and Recreation Departments to show which trails are being used by horseback riders and what condition those trails are in. This is done in hopes of keeping trails open by showing that they are being used and appreciated by trailriders. It s also a fun way to see how many hours you spend in the saddle. Don t forget, all Cherry Valley rides count for double hours. MEETING The next meeting is: Wednesday, February 7:30 pm, The Duvall Fire Station Page 1 of 7
2 DECEMBER 17 MANN RD RIDE Five brave and bundled up riders showed up for this cold winter ride, Heidi and her friend Bev, MaryJo and her friend, Peggy and Lisa. The temperature was 26 when the horses were saddled and 30 when the ride was finished. Even though it was cold, all the riders were properly dressed and were able to stay out on the trail for almost four hours. There was just a touch of snow coming down but not enough to make conditions unsafe for driving and the cold temperatures kept the trails from being muddy. A lunch break was taken at the Rock, Mann Road s viewpoint, and another break was taken at the river where 8 eagles were spotted in the trees surrounding the area. Pictured right: Bev, Heidi, Lisa, Peggy and MaryJo at the Rock. JANUARY 15 REDMOND WATERSHED RIDE The weather forecast called for temperatures in the mid 40 s for this winter ride and the three riders who showed up were looking forward to riding in above freezing weather after many days of the temperatures being in the teens and twenties. Unfortunately, above freezing temperatures did not happen. Surprise, surprise, the forecast was wrong! Hand warmers and toe warmers saved Tom, Cindy and Heidi from returning to the trailers as icicle people. The ground was hard and slick and Tom showed off his rodeo skills as his mare, Bailey, bucked and slid around on the frozen ground. Tom s belongings flew out of his pockets (we call that a country garage sale) in one bucking episode but thankfully Tom has ridden a few bucking horses in his day and was able to stay on. After 3.25 hours on the trail, all riders and horses were happy to load into warm pick up trucks and drive home. Page 2 of 7
3 JANUARY 4 MEETING MINUTES Meeting was brought to order by President Tom Cross at 7:30 pm 9 members present Treasurer s Report: Penny will remain Treasurer until February when new elected Treasurer, Missy Day will assume duties. Pilchuck Tree Farm needs $ from CVR for parking area. Bank balance is $5, Motion was made by Cheryl and seconded by Glenn to pay Pilchuck $ Motion passed. EXPENSES: Fire station meeting room is paid for the year. Ellensburg parade and rodeo to be paid. King County Parks approx. $390. Duvall Days Parade 50 th Anniversary for Duvall Cherry Valley Riders NEW BUSINESS Glenn made a motion to approve Ellensburg Rodeo block of tickets for $710,70. Seconded by Rob, motion passed. Ride Calendar was discussed and put together for the year Motion to adjourn at 8:40. Respectfully submitted, Judy Madden, Secretary WINTER RIDES CVR will be trying something new this year. Every other week, alternating Saturdays and Sundays, Heidi will be hosting a series of short local rides. The idea is to keep our horses and humans in good riding condition all year long. Locations will vary and ride lengths will be determined by who shows up and what each person wants to do. These will be rain or shine rides that will only be cancelled due to dangerous conditions or lack of participation. Please RSVP to let Heidi know if you are going to attend. Each ride will start at 10:30. An reminder with additional information will be sent out the week prior to each ride. Non-members are welcome to come but membership is strongly encouraged. Call, text or hstaheli@wildblue.net Update: someone asked me what I considerd as a short ride. I suppose my idea of short and someone else s idea of short may be different. These rides will be between hours. Again, ride time depends on what the riders who show up want to do that day. 4 LET S PLAYDAY!!! Every summer the Cherry Valley Riders come together to test their riding skills and the skill of their horses at three playdays (usually the 3 rd Sunday of the month- see CVR ride schedule). Most of the horses are trail horses that are not trained for this competition and most of the riders are trail riders with no competitive experience. It makes for a fun and entertaining day. Registration Starts at 9:00am at the Fall City Arena Playday begins at 10:00am Classes are as follows; Lead Line: Any age Novice Horse & Rider: Any age Buckaroo: 10yrs & younger Junior: Age Intermediate: Senior: Super Senior: Super, Super Senior 50 & up (You may be "placed" in a different class to help fill a class for competition purposes. This will not affect end of year High Point Awards) "Speed comes with control" Safety First! Rules are as follows; 1) Only one horse and rider in Arena at a time. 2) Riding Helmet, and proper boots or shoes required through Intermediate Class 3) After completing each course, bring your horse to a complete stop. Turn and face the Judge, giving him a "thumbs up" and a smile. This is to show everyone that you have control of your Mount. Failure to do so will result in a "No Time" for the course. There will be a description of each course prior to entering, with an example given by a club member, or by the Lead Line Class 4) You will be asked if you "know the course" prior to each event. Any last minute pointers will be given to the rider at that time. Going "off course" may result in a "no time", or a 10 second penalty added to course time. 5) Knocking over poles, or barrels, while running the course will result in a 10 second penalty, or a rerunning of the course, per the descretion of the Judge. All Playdays begin with the "Barrels" Course, followed by the "Poles" Course. The remaining two courses of the Playday vary throughout the season. A Ribbon Ceremony is held at the end of each Playday. With placing to 5th Place. Safety First!!! Let's Playday!!! COMING IN THE FEBRUARY ISSUE With a little arm twisting, Judy Madden has volunteered to write a story about how the Cherry Valley Riders came to be. For those of you who are not aware, this year is the club s 50 th Anniversary! Page 4 of 5 pages
