Brand your calendar for the 2010 Cattle Baron s Ball, on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at the Four Seasons Hotel. Saddle up for a night to remember! Fantastic grub, bellying up to the saloon, two stepping, auctions and live entertainment, armadillo races, and much, much more! Grab your hat and dust off your boots, climb into your best western gear for the most enjoyable event in Texas! It promises to bring you a toe-tapping, knee-slapping, rip-roaring kick up your heels good time! When: Saturday, May 8, 2010 Where: Why: Four Seasons Hotel, Austin, TX In 1913, the five-year survival rate for cancer was one in nine. In 1940, the survival rate grew to one in four. In the 1960s, the cancer survival rate was up to one in three. Today, the cancer survival rate is 62 percent for all cancers. Nationally The American Cancer Society dedicates more money to cancer research than any other non-profit in the U.S. They have been funding cancer researchers for over 60 years to the tune of $3.4 billion dollars. The Society has played a role in every major advance against cancer to date. The Society has funded 44 Nobel Prize winners in the field of cancer research. With your donation we can fund the 45th. Locally At present, the Society is funding five researchers at UT Austin at a total cost of more than $3,000,000. Three of the five grants focus on breast cancer. In Texas, the Society is funding $32 million dollars of research. The Society is presently funding $13.5 million dollars at MD Anderson. The nationwide toll-free call center for the Society is located in Austin and employs more than 500 people. Last year, Society employees and volunteers provided services to more than 4,300 Central Texans who are battling cancer, such as transportation to and from treatments, assistance with doctor selection, and insurance claims. 15 BEATING CANCER, Enjoying Life Those diagnosed with cancer face many medical, physical and emotional issues surrounding the disease. Their treatment is daunting and can mean hundreds of trips to doctors, specialists, hospitals, and treatments. Compliance with the treatment schedule is critical to their survival. This presents a serious challenge for many patients who are too weak to drive after treatment or who lack the human and/or financial resources to find other means to go to and from their treatment. This problem is further complicated when doctor and/or insurance company referrals, or special care requirements, force patients to travel outside of their nearby area for treatment. Stress and anxiety over treatment issues, such as transportation, can cause patients to abandon their treatment before it is finished, potentially at the cost of their life. Directed Giving: Transportation Assistance Oncology social workers report that 77 percent of the patients they work with say transportation is one of the biggest needs they have during their treatment. Because of reduced funding, many community-based organizations have fewer financial resources to support the needs of patients. You are able to direct a gift to the American Cancer Society through the Austin Cattle Baron s Ball. This year 100 percent of your contribution of $2,500 and above will be dedicated to providing assistance to patients for transportation to their life saving treatment. Your generosity will reduce the burden on the patient and family through rides to doctor appointments, financial assistance for gas, vouchers for public transportation, or additional patient transportation issues such a bus voucher to treatment and clinical trial sites including Dallas, Houston, or San Antonio.

16 The Society Award honors an exceptional group of people whose generous contributions to the American Cancer Society are helping achieve our goal of saving lives and ultimately eliminating cancer. Those who have a significant role in the battle against cancer by donating $10,000 and more annually will receive special recognition at the Cattle Baron s Ball. THE Society Award THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY The American Cancer Society office provides many services for cancer patients and their families in a non-biased, comfortable setting, including information about cancer, gift items, durable medical equipment, and lifesaving transportation services to the community.
