3 Non-Livestock Information Non-Livestock County Fair Exhibits Please take a few minutes to read the very beginning of each section in which you plan to exhibit (i.e. foods, clothing, home environment, etc.) in the fairbook. There is valuable information included which may lead to a better ribbon placing if you follow the guidelines. Some examples are: - All woodworking projects require copies of plans used even if you use plans from the manual or made the item from your own plans. - Some Home Environment (Visual Arts, Design Decisions, Heirloom Treasures and Quilt Quest) exhibits require extra information and framed exhibits and some Visual Arts require a means for hanging the exhibit (hook or wire). - All foods and food preservation exhibits must include a recipe and the source of the recipe. Food preservation exhibits also need preservation labels attached. Horticulture and Flower Entries For County Fair We are asking that you make your own entry tags on Name: John Brown 4 X 6 index cards. See Town: Beantown Age: 10 example for information that Class: 41 needs to be included on the Class Name: Rudbeckia card. If you are entering a bucket flower, please put your name on the bottom of the container with a permanent marker. 4-H Photography Exhibits Exhibit prints (Unit II or Unit III) should be brought in plastic bags (most fit in a 2 gallon bag) and are left in the bag as exhibit prints are displayed in bags. All Photography exhibits also need to have completed Personal Data Tag(s) securely attached to the back of exhibits. Refer to the fairbook as some exhibits need only Part A and other exhibits need both Part A and Part B. You can print your own tags using a 2 X 4 mailing label. Go to our website at and go to 4-H Photography. Label information has changed, so read the fairbook. Refer this publication to help you with you photography exhibits: Interview Judging If you would like to have your clothing, foods, photography, home environment or general area exhibits interview judged, sign up for an interview time in each area on Tuesday evening when you enter your exhibits or call the Extension Office prior to July 19th to sign up for an interview time. Best of Show Ribbons/4-H Award Program Each 4-H area in the Exhibit Hall (i.e. foods, home environment, etc.) will have a best of show winner chosen. These winners also receive special recognition at the 4-H award program following the public 4-H Fashion Show on Thursday, July 21st. Please check your exhibits to see whether you will be recognized at the awards program. Photos of winners will be taken for the paper after the award presentation. Food Exhibit Information Foods Exhibit Tips and What Not To Bring To The Fair Following is a summary of important tips for 4-H ers preparing foods exhibits for the fair. A more complete list is available at the Extension Office or at: and then go to the 4-H Food and Nutrition Resources. - Icings/frostings made with raw eggs are not acceptable; however, egg white rinses brushed on prior to baking are fine. - Cream cheese frostings are only acceptable if the recipe has a ration of 4 cups sugar per 8 ounces of cream cheese but whipped cream cheese frostings without powdered sugar are NOT acceptable. - Cream cheese fillings or melted cheese toppings may result in an unsafe food product by judging time due to heat and humidity and will be disqualified. DO NOT BRING : breads containing ingredients that are normally refrigerated, caramel corn, custard or cream pies, jerky of any kind, alcohol, meat filled pastries, sourdough or friendship bread products. Food Judging Guide Available This is a very good teaching resource for 4-H foods projects. Not only does it talk about the quality standards a judge looks for, it describes what you might have done wrong when you end up with a poor quality food product. Stop by our office for a copy or download it at on the 4-H page under 4-H Food and Nutrition Resources. Volunteers Needed 4-H Market Wednesday, July 20th, beginning at 2 p.m., the 4-H Market will offer baked goods and decorated cakes in the east room of the Exhibit Building. Minimal prices are assigned and the bargains are great. Proceeds from these events are used to help support the camp scholarships. Anyone who would like to volunteer to help with the sale of baked goods and decorated cakes in the afternoon and evening of Thursday, July 21st or the morning of Friday, July 22nd should call the Extension Office. Score Sheets Available Be sure to check out the score sheets for each area of interest. The scoresheets will help you know what judges are looking for and what they will be judging you on. You will find them here under each curriculum area. They will be found at the bottom of each curriculum once you expand that section. You can then view, download and print for your reference. If you are looking for one and can t find it, give us a call.

Exhibitors MUST demonstrate an ability to control their animal, upon the second escape the animal will be eliminated from competition. The substitute showman policy also prevents a more experienced exhibitor from showing an uncontrollable animal, as substitutes are only in case of illness, disability or conflict of schedule H Clover Kids (ages 5-7) are NOT to serve as substitute showmen. 3. Junior Sheep show will be slick shear on all animals (sheared within 10 days of show). SHOWMANSHIP POLICY Exhibitors are no longer required to move up to the next showmanship division after winning their age division. Youth will only move up when your age reaches the next age division. See page 8 of the fairbook for Showmanship age divisions. Exhibitors MUST use their own animal for showmanship. Substitute showmen must be Saline County 4-H or FFA members, not Clover Kids, who are exhibiting at the fair. LIVESTOCK GROOMING POLICY If you are physically able to exhibit your animal/project, then we expect you to also prepare your project for all showing. Grooming animals for show is primarily the responsibility of exhibitors. However, assistance from immediate family members, fellow exhibitors, and 4-H and FFA leaders/advisors is permitted as a learning tool for future shows. Show Dress Code You must wear the official grey 4-H or FFA show shirt. If you are a horse exhibitor, check to see if you have an armband. Armbands are available at the Extension Office and will be sold at the announcers stand during the 4-H Horse Show. Proper dress code is to be followed by all junior exhibitors when showing project animals. Please carefully read the dress code rules in the fairbook for those that pertain to your specific species. Drug Testing Any animal at the Saline County Fair is subject to both urine and blood testing at the discretion of the show superintendent with the cost incurred by the exhibitor if something illegal is detected. Trailer Parking Notice to Livestock Exhibitors We are again asking that livestock trailers be parked as far away as possible from the beef barn. As parking areas become more crowded, having trailers out of the way allows grandparents and other spectators to park closer. Please park all trailers to the east and north of the beef barn in the designated area for stock trailers. DO NOT PARK TRAILERS DIRECTLY NEXT TO THE SHOW ARENA ON THE NORTH SIDE. This allows for handicap access, safety and parking ease for the elderly. NO EXCEPTIONS!

6 Beef Exhibitors Beef Fitting Area For County Fair The Ag Society is making attempts to have fitting space for everyone within the confines of the livestock area. All beef will need to remain in the designated fitting area, any animals attempting to enter from outside the area after 7:30 a.m. on show day will be ineligible to show. They may exit after completion of the beef show. Beef Blow & Show Rules - County Fair & State Fair The County Fair and State Fair Beef shows are both Blow and Show. Beef exhibitors will be allowed only to wash (shampoo), blowout or comb their animals for the show. a) beef animals will be shown free of any adhesive, glue, paint, or powder products. b) any compounds with adhesive qualities that cannot be combed or brushed through or alter the color of the animal are forbidden. These include, but are not limited to commonly used adhesives and colorants such as Prime Time, EZ Comb, Tail Adhesive, Ultra White Touch Up, Black Touch Up, Black Finisher and black show foam. c) alcohol, water, oil, foam or any water or alcohol-based products with no adhesive or glue qualities, or artificial colorings are permitted. These include conditioners and commonly used sprays such as Kleen Sheen, Revive, Final Bloom and white show foam. County Fair Beef animals that violate these rules will not be eligible for trophy and are dropped one live score ribbon placing. All calves WILL be checked by show personnel prior to entering the ring. Sunday Barn Clean-up You WILL need to remove all bedding from the beef barn. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of premiums to you and your club. Sheep & Goat Exhibitors Sheep & Goat Stalls - All Sheep & Goats will be stalled in the South end of the Swine barn as the former building has been repurposed into a new livestock show pavilion. Wash Racks - Sheep & Goat wash racks will remain in the same place as in the past and will only be used for washing sheep and goats. Youth with larger livestock (bucket calves, sheep, goat and swine) will have their opportunity to do showmanship at approximately 7 p.m. in the show arena. These will be non-competitive exhibitions, with the goal of allowing the Clover Kid and Pee Wee youth the opportunity to experience showing an animal as an introduction to the 4-H program. Clover Kids may show their own animal if present at the fair or shared with a sibling. Pee Wee participants not exhibiting an animal at the fair will be responsible for securing the use of an animal already at the fair. Animals are not to be brought in from home for this show.
