These will be done on paper. You may only enter exhibits in the 4-H Project areas you have enrolled in. To view projects you are entered into log onto ne.4honline.com. Horticulture and Floriculture forms are to be turned in at County Fair. Please see enclosed instructions. Don t forget to include all supporting information. Most projects require supporting information such as measurements, recipes, design descriptions, etc. If you have questions, please ask ahead of time. We are happy to answer questions! If required supporting information is not included the exhibit will be dropped a ribbon placing. 2 If you haven t started...start now! 4-H Career Portfolio (Record Books) All record books are due September 15 Record books will be available online at You may also stop by your local Extension Office to pick up a copy however it is preferred that you download from the website. All 4-H ers must use the Career Portfolio. Clover Kids DO NOT have to do Record Books. If you or your club needs help with your record books, please call to set up an appointment. Please don t wait until the last minute. Items for a complete RECORD BOOK Green 4-H Cover - The Career Portfolio is to be bound with the Green 4-H Cover. New members will need to pick this up at the Extension Office if you have not received one. 4-H Award Application Dundy, Hayes & Hitchcock: You do not need this to apply for County Awards. If all items of your record book are turned in by the due date you will automatically be eligible for awards. State Awards If you are interested in applying for State Awards contact the office for more information. Through state awards you can have a chance to win a trip to 4-H Youth Congress. 4-H Career Portfolio - This includes Project Accomplishments; 4-H Leadership, Community Service, Volunteer, Citizenship & Educational Experiences; Non-4-H Experiences, 4-H Story & Support Materials (including photos & Animal Financial). These are built upon each year. Please remember to keep and add to this from year to year. SW4 Animal Financial Record - Please use the SW3 Animal and Companion Animal Record book to complete the financial part for all animals including Beef, Sheep, Swine, Horse, Cat, Dog, Rabbit, Poultry and all Small Animals. The financial record books may be found online at go.unl.edu/k484.. Please include the financial records as the last pages of your Career Portfolio in the Support Materials section. To find the correct record books to use go to: Don t forget to have you 4-H Leader sign your 4-H Career Portfolio and Animal Financial Records. Record Books are a requirement for many medals, camps/activity scholarships and special awards. 3rd Annual Agronomy Youth Field Day August 8, 2018, Wednesday 9:00am - 3:00 pm Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture Educational Center in Curtis, NE Open to ALL youth ages 9 to 18 years old. Parents/Adults welcome too. Nebraska Extension Cropping & Water Systems and 4-H Youth Development Educators along with Nebraska College Technical Agriculture in Curtis Agronomy / Ag Mechanics Department invite ALL youth to this FREE Field Day to get excited about Science & Agronomy/ Irrigation / Mechanized Agricultural careers for producing Nebraska crops! Presentations Contest The Southwest Three 4-H Presentation Contest will be held on June 19 at 10:00 a.m. CT in Trenton. Please pre-register by calling the Extension Office with your type of presentation and name of your presentation by June 12. Presentations should be related to 4-H, the 4-H member s 4-H experiences, or 4-H project related. Youth may give an individual presentation by him/herself or a team presentation in any class except multimedia. Presentation may be given using posters, props, LCD projector, slide, video or overhead projector. For complete guidelines on preparing your presentation please refer to your county fairbook. Special Garden Project Seeds still available This project is open to all youth of 4-H age and it will give them the opportunity to learn about growing, harvesting, preparing, and exhibiting this unique flower. The Special Gardening Project lets 4-H members try their hand at growing unusual vegetables and flowers. The project allows experienced 4-H gardeners to grow something fun, new, and different while letting those new to gardening get their feet wet in this project area. Updated Videos and Resources for 4-H Judges Are you judging 4-H projects this summer or interested in beginning to judge? There is a new judges registration process that has been implemented as a way to encourage anyone interested in judging to share their contact information, which areas they are interested in judging, how far they are willing to travel, etc. This will provide staff across the state with a more comprehensive list of options when hiring. More information on registering as a judge can be found at Also found on this website are updated videos and resources for judges. Fairs, Fun & Food Safety Do you like to bake? Do you like to can? Is Food Safety a concern of yours? If you answered yes to any of these questions you will want to check out the new 4-H Foods Curriculum as well as this webinar training before the county fair. To connect to the recorded webinar go to: Don t forget to ask about the new foods curriculum available at the Extension Office and the foods classes available to exhibit in at the county fair. Sewing with Nancy Need help with your sewing project? Nancy Frecks, Extension Educator will once again be available to help 4-Her s with their sewing projects. Please contact your local Extension Office to set up sewing time with Nancy. Sewing machines will be provided if needed and participants need to bring the supplies needed for the project they want to work on.

Recipes for Life Life Challenge Contest Thursday, June 21, :00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. CT Lunch will be provided Fashion Camp (newly added) Friday, July 6, :00 4:00 p.m. CT McCook Red Willow County 4-H Building Meeting Hayes Center Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall Cost: $15.00 Ages 8-18 Pre-paid registration due June 14 Spend the morning learning and practicing the basic skills of food preparation, selection, safety and science. Participants will prepare their own lunch and do a short demonstration of one of the skills they learn. The demonstration will be part of the Life Challenge Contest. Following a morning of discovery and learning the 4-H Life Challenge Contest will be held at 1:00 p.m. Youth do no need to be present for the morning activities to participate in the Life Challenge Contest. 5 Dundy County Announcements 4-H Council Meeting The next 4-H Council meeting will be held on Monday, June 18 at 6:00 p.m. at the Courthouse in the Jury Room. Please notify the office if you would like to add an item to the agenda. What s New in the 2018 Fairbook Welding A Plasma Cutter/Welder Design class has been added. Foods There is new curriculum for foods and preservation. Several classes remain the same but be sure to look them over. Cooking 401 now includes a Candy class A preservation form has been provided to help make sure you have all your needed information for the preservation classes. See SW3.unl.edu website to find template. Grievance Policy and Code of Ethics updated to follow Nebraska 4-H Policy Handbook. Photography Theme is True Leader and photography tags updated. Home Environment Additional information template included. See SW3.unl.edu website to find template Design Decisions Technology in Design Class has been added. Example is using conductive thread to create a circuit to light up a photo. Computers 3D Pen Creations class has been added. An Alternative/Renewable Energies Division and classes have been added. Sheep and Goat classes updated. Pre Fair Entries Due July 6 Pre-Fair Entries will be completed online at dundy.fairwire.com with the exception of Shooting Sports and Horticulture/Floriculture. These pre fair entry forms list all the exhibits you plan to bring to the county fair and include the various contest you plan to participate in. Any late entries will be penalized as follows: Pre-Fair Entries turned in within the first week following the due date will receive ½ of their booster money and those participating in the livestock sale will receive a 5% deduction from their sale price. Pre-Fair Entries turned in following the first week after the due date through the second week will receive no booster money and those participating in the livestock sale will receive a 10% deduction from their sale price. Pre-Fair Entries turned in after two weeks following the entry due date will not be allowed to enter into the 4- H judging however may enter their projects into Open Class if a class is available. 4-H Dress Code Shooting Sports blue jeans and a approved 4-H T-Shirt purchased from the Extension Office or white sleeved shirt with a 4-H chevron. (no shorts) Livestock beef, dairy, swine, goat, sheep, llama, rabbits, cats, dog and small animals. Approved 4-H T-shirt purchased from the Extension Office or white sleeved shirt with a 4-H chevron, blue jeans, hard sole shoes Horse white long sleeved shirt, western hat, dark blue jeans with no bling, hard-soled shoes or cowboy boots. If you have not picked up your Fairbook or 4-H Manuals at the Extension Office, please do so ASAP!

6 Pre-Fair Clean Up Sunday, July 22 Pre-Fair Clean Up is scheduled for SUNDAY, July 22. We will start at 5:00 p.m. All 4-H members, leaders, families and superintendents are asked to help to make things run smoothly in a short amount of time. Bring brooms, shovels, rakes, and rags for dusting. If we all pitch in, we should have the exhibit building and the grounds in top shape by 6:30 for the 4-H Family Hamburger Feed. It is EVERY 4-H families responsibility to help with Pre-Fair Clean Up. See you at Clean Up!!! Clothing & Fashion Show Entries The judged and public Fashion Show will be held prior to pre fair clean up and the Clothing entries will be entered with the rest of the Exhibit Hall Entries on Tuesday of fair week. Clothing entries include: Beyond the Needle, Steam 1, 2 & 3, Tailoring, Sew for Your Animals, Quilting, Shopping In Style, General Clothing items, Crocheting & Knitting. See Schedule below. Fashion Show will be held Sunday, July 22 at 3:00 p.m. Clothing Entries will be entered Tuesday, July 24 from 8: 30 to 1 1 : 30 a. m. with judging beginning at 12:30 p.m. Fair Volunteers Needed! Once again, fair time is fast approaching. We are making contacts for fair superintendents and helpers. If there is an area you would like to help in, please contact the Extension Office to let us know. Volunteers are one of the most important aspects of carrying out a successful fair and 4-H Program. Thanks to those who volunteer their time to help out the 4-H program.

Carnival Games NEEDED We will once again be having the carnival on Friday, August 3rd at 10:00 a.m. We are asking that each club provide at least 2 carnival games and that Independents please help out by providing a carnival game. All games must be set up by 9: 30 so we are ready to start the carnival promptly at 10:00. All carnival prizes will be provided by the 4-H Council and handed out to games at the time of the carnival. Please call the office to let us know what carnival games you will be running.

9 New 4-H t-shirt orders due June 20th! To order go online to: These t-shirts will be allowed to be worn during the H year for competition and events! Cost will be $10 plus tax (additional $2 for 2XL and above) Select to have t-shirt picked up at the store. All t-shirts ordered will be picked up and delivered to the Hayes County Extension Office to be available for pick up after July 1.

10 Hitchcock County Announcements 4-H Council Meeting The next 4-H Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 20 at 7:00 p.m. in Trenton at the Courthouse Community Room. Please notify the office if you would like to add an item to the agenda. 4-H Enrollment & Fees Don t forget to pay your 4-H enrollment fee of $5.00. Please make send check to: 4-H Council in Hitchcock County, PO Box 248, Trenton, NE Thank you to everyone that has already paid. Poultry and Rabbit Exhibitors As you prepare your small animal exhibits this summer, please be aware that all rabbits and poultry will be required to stay at the county fair until Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Thank you in advance for working with us to have more animals on display at the county fair. Trailer Parking at the Hitchcock County Fair All Trailer Parking for the Hitchcock County Fair will be on the south side of the Beef Barns on the FVC ground or North of the main entrance on the ball field. NO trailers are allowed to park in other areas. Loading and Unloading in a timely manner will be allowed. Reminder Livestock Sale Fee Effective as of 2017 the Livestock Sale Fee will raise from 3% to 5 %. All animals sold through livestock sale will be assessed 5% of sale price. The fees that remain in the sale account go towards improvements to the livestock facilities on the fairgrounds. To date this has helped to provide concrete in sheep/hog area, large fans in livestock barn and scales. Need help with you Small Animal Project? Pam Hamilton has offered once again to help 4-H youth with their dog project. If you are looking for some guidance on how to show your dog you can contact Pam at the office at (308)
