Effective, 2015 all 4-H families must enroll in clubs and projects on-line! We will be discontinuing the use of our previous paper 4-H enrollment forms. Starting in February 4-H ers will be able to create and access their 4-H online accounts. Detailed information on how to enroll will be sent out in the February 4-H Newsletter. You will need to create a new family account and profiles for each 4-H member that plan to participate in the 2015 program year. 4HOnline is a web-based enrollment system that will allow families to enroll in 4-H on your personal computer, notebook or mobile device. I will also be a holding 4-H 101 event again this year with the opportunity to enroll in 4-H at the event. You ll be able to complete all of the information necessary to join 4- H online, including 4-H code of conduct forms and health forms. There will be no paper forms to submit for enrollment. Watch for more information in the February 4-H Newsletter. All enrollments are due April 1st. Changes may be made until June 1st. Enrollments due online April 1st!
2 Market Beef Weigh-In Set Dates have been set for the Market Beef Weigh-Ins in the Southwest Four Counties. All market heifers and market steers must be weighed in, tagged, identification sheets completed and DNA samples taken for State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben livestock. Dates are set as follows: Hayes County Saturday, February 14th from 1:00 3:00 p.m. CT, Fairgrounds in Hayes Center Dundy County Sunday, February 15th from 2:00 3:00 p.m. MT, Fairgrounds in Benkelman Hitchcock County Sunday, March 1st from 1:30 3:00 p.m. CT, Fairgrounds in Culbertson If your county has a rate of gain contest, only animals weighed in at their local county on the above weigh-in dates will be eligible. All market animals must attend one of the weigh days. If you can not make it to the weigh-in in your county, you need to make arrangements to weigh and tag at one of the other locations within Dundy, Hayes or Hitchcock Counties. Please call Kimberly and make arrangements to attend another county s weigh-in if necessary. DNA Requirements for State Fair & Ak-Sar-Ben All beef, sheep and swine will need to have DNA samples (hair with roots) taken to be eligible to exhibit at State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben. The cost will be $6.00 per head. If you are planning on exhibiting livestock at the State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben please make plans for this during the weigh-in days. DNA samples will be taken for those interested at the respective tag days. BVD Testing will be required for State Fair Once again Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVD) testing will be require for all beef animals showing at the Nebraska State Fair. Please work with your local veterinarians to have this testing done if you plan to show at the Nebraska State Fair. Please feel free to contact the Extension Office if you have any questions regarding the BVD testing. Cancellation Announcements As we plan events for the winter and spring months we never know what mother nature will bring us. And this year has been no exception to our share of inclement weather. Please tune into the following radio stations for any cancellations or postponements that may have to be made. KIOD, FM KRVN, 880 AM or 93.1 FM or Nebraska Cattleman s Classic Livestock Judging Contest The Nebraska Cattleman s Classic Livestock Judging Contest will be held Saturday, February 21 at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds in Kearney, NE. Here are a few ideas to get you started on celebrating Nebraska 4-H Month! Wear your 4-H shirt to school on February 2nd to kick off Nebraska 4-H Month Decorate a storefront window Make place mats or table tents about 4-H for restaurants in your town. Talk on the radio about why you enjoy 4-H! Help 4-H be a part of a friends future by asking a friend to come to your 4-H club meeting Explore a new project Get started on it in February. Nebraska 4-H Diamond Clover Program The Diamond Clover program is designed to encourage 4-H youth to engage in a variety of projects and activities that will enable members to acquire the life skills necessary to lead successful lives. The overall goal of the program is to provide members with a rich and diverse learning experience. 4-H members of all ages are encouraged to get involved in the program. Participation in the program is optional. 4-H members will gain self esteem from successfully completing the requirements of each of the levels. Member s participation will enhance their efforts in their Career Portfolio. Member s who complete a Diamond Clover level will also be recognized at their local 4-H Achievement Program. The frame work of the Diamond Clover provides levels of activities and recognition for members at all ages. The program provides exciting opportunities for communities to connect with youth to tackle community improvement projects. Youth and adult partnerships will build a strong sense of community and generate community pride for all. 4 UNL Extension Horse Judging Workshops 3 Horse Judging Workshops for those interested in becoming Nebraska 4-H Horse Show Judge or coach to be held this winter. These are targeted to current and potential Nebraska 4-H Horse Show judges, coaches and advanced judging team members. They will be held: February 3, 2015 Ord, NE February 17, 2015 Buffalo Co. Extension, Kearney, NE February 24, 2015 Douglas/Sarpy County Extension, Omaha, NE Pre-Registration Cost = $30/adult & $10/youth Late fee= additional $10/person NE 4-H Judges exam fee =$20 Please register one week prior to the workshop you are attending For more information contact: Lena Cottle at or lcottle@unl.edu. 4-H Horse Stampede The H Stampede date has been set! The H Stampede has been scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2015 and Entries are due to the county office by Friday, February 13, So, mark your calendars!! The 4-H Horse Stampede will be held at the Animal Science Complex, UNL east campus. This will be the State Competitions for 4-H Horse Bowl, Horse Demonstrations, Horse Public Speaking, Horse Bowl and Art. Also, they are adding a photography contest so please refer to the stampede web page for rules animalscience.unl.edu/anscextensionequine4hhorsestampede. You will use the art entry form to sign up for the photography contest. The stampede will NOT be held in conjunction with a UNL Equestrian Team show so there will be no concession stand available. Contestants and leaders may order box lunches so please add these to the county summary form Companion Animal Challenge The Companion Animal Challenge is a new event to allow youth to compete in companion animal events without their animals. The 4-H Companion Animal Challenge will include the following events: Demonstrations, Quiz Bowl, Art, Photography and Skill-a-thon. Rules and entry forms can be found online at: The quiz bowl and skill-a-thon will be dog project specific, while the remaining contests (art, photography, demonstrations) will be open to youth enrolled in any companion animal area (dogs, cats, rabbits, small animal, household pets). Art and photography are open to youth of any age. The demonstration, quiz bowl, and skill-a-thon contests will be open to youth 10 years and older (similar to other state contests). Registration forms are found online at the above link and youth should pre-order t-shirts if desired as extras will not be ordered. Seeing i2i Seeing i2i: Adventures in Diversity and Cultural Awareness is a new 4-H curriculum intended to help youth gain global competence and cultural competence skills needed in today s increasingly interconnected world and culturally diverse communities. On My Own & Ok Terrific Tips and Tricks On Your Own and OK serves as an excellent tool to teach youth about safety when home alone. The goal of this curriculum is to educate parents and youth on the importance of family communication in providing a safe home environment. CWF 2017 Must have completed Freshman year in high school and be 15 years of age by June Please call or Kimberly to sign up. 4-H Online Enrollment All 4-H Enrollments will be online ONLY in The next Citizenship Washington Focus Program will happen in 2017 with meetings starting in If you are interested in participating in the CWF Program please contact Kimberly Cook at kcook2@unl.edu or by calling your local UNL Extension Office to get on the potential participant list. A little about the program: The Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) Experience is a two week-long 4-H citizenship & leadership program for youth ages 14 to 18 (as of Jan. 1 st of year attending). Youth must have completed their Freshman year in high school before the June The program lends a hand for youth to: strengthen their communication, leadership, and other citizenship skills on a national level understand the importance of civic and social responsibilities experience hands-on learning using the historical backdrop of our nation s Capital, Washington, D.C. While at the National 4-H Center, CWF participants get: A behind-the-scenes look at our nation's capital and the chance to meet Members of Congress; Motivational speakers, workshops and assemblies that increase individual commitment to citizen involvement and build lifetime skills for success; Activities that encourage new and lasting friendships; As part of the CWF program youth will also experience possible destinations such as Chicago, New York City, Niagara Falls and Philadelphia. Exact destinations will be made as the CWF Program is planned and funding permits.
