1 FPRR Newsletter SEPTEMBER 8, 2009 VOLUME 4, NUMBER 2 Happy Autumn! Hopefully all of you are enjoying this great running weather and have gotten ready for your favorite fall events. In addition to our regular weekend runs we have Wednesday night training runs at 6:45 pm, which will continue until the end of the month as it is starting to get dark. So many reasons to come on out and Good Running to all of us! Tip: Leave TV and get physical. Take bike rides after dinner, hike, skate or kayak. Be adventurous. You will come back to running refreshed. Reminder: SEPT MEETING Sun, 9/13/09 Next meeting: tba bonnie@forestparkr unners.org jack@forestparkrun ners.org We re on the Web! ners.org Summer Races This year s summer 1 mile race series was not as successful as years past due to the inclement weather. We will get a full accounting at our next meeting and discuss certain improvements for next year. Apparel Come to our next meeting to pick up your team caps, shirts. All new members are entitled to a cap at sign up and lots of you have not gotten them just yet. If you would like to purchase, $10 for your first, $15 for subsequent one. The shirts are $15 for paid members, $20 for others. And of course, they look fabulous! As cooler weather is on the way, we also have some fleece headbands and will take orders with prepayment for track suits. Hello and Goodbye A warm welcome to our newest members Kerry McPhee, Erik Rodriguez, Barry Quinn and Danny Shum. We look forward to running with all of them. Anna Lam has moved to Long Island and will not be rejoining the club, we wish her well. Good and Welfare Sharone Novik has given Lior a sibling. They are now out and about in the Park. Scott Siegel is back from France and is starting to think about racing again. We are going to challenge him to get back out there with us. Andy ElSasser is now gainfully retired and very much enjoying it. Diane Ditchfield is back on the running scene, after being sidelined with a knee injury. Debby Kuha from the Oak Ridge administrative offices asked if the club would volunteer on Saturday October 24, 2009 around 9am for the fall planting. For more details, speak with Ed.
2 Tip: Losing 7-8% excess body fat can reduce risk for type 2 diabetes.get at least 30 minutes of activity in almost every day for best resultss. New York City Marathon The Marathon is on 11/1/09 this year and FPRR is looking forward to fielding a very strong team. Our club usually has great participation for this event as runners and spectators. This year, though, we do not as yet have a designated driver and are hoping one of the membership will step forward to get our runners off to a great start. If you would like to drive please notify Jack. Mark your Calendar! Holiday Party The Holiday Party has not been set. While we have been fortunate enough to secure Oak Ridge in years past, we have discussed trying something new and going to a restaurant. More at our meeting. Upcoming Races We have quite a few races in the near future. NYRR has on 9/20 Queens Half but of course many of us will be in Philadelphia. The Continental Fifth Avenue Mile on 9/26 and the 18M Marathon Tune up is on 9/27. Don t forget the Norwegian Festival of races on 10/3 (with tasty bagels and lox to follow), and we still have the Staten Island half on 10/11 and the Marathon kick off in late October. Of course there are many local events that you have been receiving by . So many races, so little time. Travel Our next event is the Philadelphia Half. We are quite a group and more than six entrants and a small cheering section. Cheesestakes and Sightseeing to follow. By the time of our meeting, there should be a full report. There have also been some rumors of races in Newport, RI, San Antonio, TX and Orlando, FL. If you would like to organize an event or publicize one, bonnie@forestparkrunners.org. Forest Park Runners PO Box Woodhaven, NY bonnie@forestparkrunn ers.org jack@forestparkrunners.org We re on the Web! Team s 2009 Forest Park Runners Club had a fair showing at the Team s this year and a lot of fun. Based upon the turnout, unfortunately we did not have enough for an Open team for either men or women although we had Masters teams in Women and a Vets team for the Men. We hope next year to have solid teams for both and in all categories. As the rules for this race require larger open teams EVERYONE IS NEEDED. Please do not wait for a personal invitation; we do not always know how many are entered until gun time. Remember, as long as you finish, it counts. So let s get all of our runners and walkers out there! Incidentally all of the NYRR club points races are all marked with an + Have you paid your dues lately? Dues are to be paid at the beginning of the year, or for you new members at the time of signing up. $10 for regular members, $5 for seniors. A bargain! Aside from the costs of the newsletter, etc, dues allow us to continue to have bagel breakfasts, defray the costs of team apparel and subsidize events. So download the form and send it today! Articles and Graphics If you would like to contribute an article to the Newsletter or a photo to the Website, contact Bonnie at Bonnie@forestparkrunners.org. Note: all photos must be digital or scanned for uploading. Access
3 If you would like to be more connected to club activities then access is a must. For those of you without computers, consider getting a free account like with hotmail.com or yahoo.com and checking once or twice a week at the library. As an added bonus, the club saves about $4 per year per person, not to mention a couple of trees. Race Results This section is now prepared by Tom Brogan. He carefully culls the NYRRC.org race results. And while he is pretty special, he is not clairvoyant. So, if you would like to add other events and race times please contact him directly at RaceResults@forestparkrunners.org, even better remember to put your team FPRR on your NYRR entry!
